How do I add a website that will open in the 'Favourites' list in File Explorer? In the Home title, if I go to the 'New' section & click on 'New Folder' & type in the website address, that won't open at the desired site. I can open a website & right click & select 'Add to Favourites' ok, but that goes in the list of 'Favourites' on a website.

When I click on the Internet Explorer tile on the Start page, either the latest accessed application's webpage is displayed, or an error message saying that the website address not found. Therefore if I want to access a webpage, I cannot enter its address in the address bar of Internet Explorer. instead I hold down the Microsoft Logo and press s for search. I works, but I do not understand the contradiction between the error message and the fact that internet Explorer is actually working.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Start Menu 8 to create a win 7 menu and bypass the tiles, but now I don't see IE 10 listed anywhere. Where could it go? I didn't think you could get rid of IE10. I use Chrome as my default browser, but I would like to open IE 10 if needed.
How do I get IE 10 back? Reinstall?
Playing around with Win 8 and found that it's not easy to pin a file or a web site (if you're not using IE) to the new start screen. Some have suggested downloading a nice little utility that will do the job, but I always try to avoid having a lot of single purpose, rarely used utilities.
Here's a way to accomplish the same task that I discovered by some trial and error.
Go to the desktop. Create a shortcut to an app (firefox if you want to pin a web site, excel if you want to pin a spreadsheet, etc.), giving the shortcut the name of the file or web site you want to pin to the start screen.
Once the shortcut to the app is created, right click on the shortcut, click properties. Go to the target line and add a space, then within quotes add the website or the file you want to access (if a file, add the entire file path and file name).
Click Apply
Right click the shortcut and you will now see the "Pin to Start" option. Click this option.
You can now delete the shortcut on the desktop (unless you want to keep the shortcut on the desktop and the start screen).
Go to the start screen. You will see the new shortcut which executes with a single click or touch.
Examples of a website shortcut Target line and file shortcut Target line are shown below.

I'd like to add a file extension to the list given in Control Panel/Default Programs. In WinXP it was really easy but I hardly needed to use it as there seemed to be a lot more extensions available anyway back then. Unbelievably, (well, to me anyway), MS seem to have omitted '.flac'. View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a new computer equipped with Windows 8.1. It has a different way to show files and folders than every previous Windows OS I have worked with in the past. I use a lot of folders and have thousands of files. In the past, folders were always on top no matter how I organized it, which made it easy to go through several folders in order to find the document I need. In Windows 8 it's different.
When I organize in Details by date modified, newest to oldest, I want folders to be on top. Right now, folders are ALWAYS at the bottom. The only way to get folders on the top is if I organize oldest to newest. It's the same thing if I organize alphabetically. If it's ascending A-Z, folders are on the bottom. If it's descending Z-A, folders are on the top. This makes no sense to me and is not intuitive. Why would I only want folders at the top if I'm going counter-alphabetically or oldest to newest?
It means that I ALWAYS have to scroll in order to find the most recent folder I've used, even if I sort by date modified. That's a tremendous hassle when working with dozens of folders. Even when the folders are on the top of the screen, they're only on top if I've organized Z-A or Oldest to Newest. Which means that if I need to find a folder that starts with A, I either have to organize it A-Z and then scroll all the way down to get to the folders, or I have to organize it Z-A and STILL scroll down because the folders on top start with Z.
Any way to go back to the previous method, and if not why Windows would change it to such a counter intuitive model. I work with hundreds of documents daily.

If I right click on the folder and go to send to all I get is the dvd drive unless I shift right click first then a drop down of more selections appear but not send to compress. Is this something that need to be activated. I can un-zip a fle from the view tab.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install of Windows 8.1 this week and have a fully updated installation now with minimal programs installed. My problem is this, I have my downloads folder set to sort files by date created, from newest to oldest so I can easily find my newest downloads as they should be at the top of the listing, but Windows explorer will not refresh the view if I have have explorer open, forcing me to either manually refresh it or go to another folder, then come back which updates the view. I never had to do this with the old win 8 pro installation and have tried resetting the folders several times but it still won't update by itself. I do have the latest version of Start8 installed, but that never caused a problem before.

The file manager I use does take over all file and folder operations by default, but even turning off the "Explorer replacement" option, the ribbon remains missing...
Iam running 8pro 64 bit. when I open an file explorer window, sometimes there is everytihg, but most of the time, there is just "desktop" and it is searching.I have to manually right click and open new explorer to get it to show all drives and locations. Also, when I get into a window with movies or pictures, all the files are white, no thumbnail! I have no virus and the installation is new and it is from the Microsoft site. all updates are installed.

I have just had a factory reset & for some reason I can't get my photos in Pictures in File Explorer back into Photos. If I insert a flash drive with pictures on it & select 'Import' in Photos, it will import the photos but after supposedly downloading them, nothing! I have the 'Show photos & videos' box ticked off in Settings on the Charms panel.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince 2 days ago I've noticed that I cannot create a new folder with File Explorer by any way possible. Using the taskbar or the SHIFT + Ctrl + N. Even when saving projects with Save File as... and trying to use the "New Folder" text string button does not create any folder. Using CMD prompt or powershell all works well as with Total Commander which i only installed to see if it could create folders and it does. Other programs that auto create folders also works well (i.e. Foobar when transcoding to new unavailable folder). My Windows 8 Pro is original, it's a 4 month old install, I've not made any customizations, no registry hacks, Windows is bare apart from Classic Shell which i only use now as a custom button to go to start screen with the mouse. I also made a custom High Contrast Theme that i use at night or when eyes are a bit tired. It's 2 months old so it's there long before the problem.I've not installed any new programs in the last week apart from some updates from FileZilla, Foxit pdf and Notepad++.Last system update is COPICOM from 13 July.I followed this guide which as not resolved the problem: I cannot find a way to create a new folder in Windows 8. -

Usually you right click the app in the task bar, then right click the name, click compat tab, and then disable dpi scaling, but the compat tab is missing for some reason for File Explorer and only that app. So it looks fuzzy and crappy.

I 'Copy' e.g. Documents from the flash drive, & when I right click in the Library on Documents, the box that opens does not show a 'Paste'. View 16 Replies View RelatedThe folder had over 900 hundred files so I placed them in separate files after reading that too many files causes explorer to crash, however when I change 2 of the 7 folders to details explorer automatically crashes, for one it closes as soon as I change it to details and for the other, it closes when I scroll down, they're mostly photos and videos, also I should mention that before I put them in separate folders, it kept crashing when I tried to open it.

I am using classic shell in Windows 8 on my home pc & laptop.
On the PC "desktop" shows in file explorer but, on the laptop it does not show, please see the left attachment as opposed to the right one of the PC.
In addition, the laptop one shows the partitions spread out as opposed to the PC.
How to make the laptop show things as per PC?
I often have 3,4,5 sessions of File Explore open at once. [old habit] I can use the keyboard to copy/paste, etc with no problem. But if I use the right mouse click to "copy" or check Properties, or anything else, file explorer freezes for a few seconds, then closes. In fact it closes all sessions and shows the default Windows screen [as if just booting up] and finally all the icons reappear. It takes about 15 seconds for the screen to return to normal.
Replacement mouse does the same. Right click works perfectly inside a file, like to copy text, etc, and inside every other program. Only in File Explorer does it totally crash, no matter if only one open or many.
