Eclipse Portable Is Not Working In Windows 8
Jun 16, 2013
I swapped a newly-bought ssd into my hdd1 slot, and put the hdd it replaced into my hdd2 slot today. Installed win 8 x64 and did all updates, personal config, etc. Everything seems to be fine and stable.
Problem is, I keep getting the message: "A Java Environment [blah blah] must be available in order to run Eclipse. No Java virtual Machine was found after searching the following locations: C:EclipsePortableAppEclipsejreinjavaw.exe javaw.exe in your current PATH" when trying to run Eclipse Portable.
Now the same installation package works fine in win 7, which I re-checked by booting into my hdd. In win7, Task Manager does not show any java related processes when running portable Eclipse, to which I assume is part of the portability. Thus interestingly enough, there was never a jre folder in the installation, and certainly no javaw.exe.
Anyways, using my win7 system, I can actually launch the portable eclipse I installed on my Windows 8 ssd just fine. Same goes for if I install onto a flashdrive: works in win7 on hdd, gives the above error in Windows 8 on ssd.
Regular eclipse, using java jdk installed in program files does work on Windows 8, I just prefer the portable version.

I have an external hard drive for all my gigabytes of music, and I have Media Monkey installed as a portable app. This setup is great for taking my music library wherever I go, but the shortcut disappears from the taskbar any time the hard drive is powered off, or if the shortcut does stick around after booting up, the icon is blank. Is there a way to get the shortcut to persist properly? Would there be a way to edit the autoplay.ini to pin the shortcut when the drive is detected?

For XP users who want to keep using their XP system why not run VMWARE VMPLAYER -- FREE in UNITY MODE.
You don't need even to run Windows as your Host --how to create a Portable system that runs Windows Virtual machines and totally boots from an external HDD / USB stick (even if there's no HDD in the main computer !!).
Using Unity mode simply gives you access to all your Windows XP programs (and runs them) directly from the Host without you needing to enter the VM at all -- Power up your VM and simply click the Unity mode on the vm menu.
If you use Linux as a host it saves you having to purchase a new version of windows (Linux is FREE). Simply convert your XP system to a VM and then you can keep running XP for as long as you like without worrying about having to upgrade Windows.

I was just wondering if I could "Burn" a Virtual XP machine into a ROM -- I only need to run it to access some legacy hardware that I'll be keeping around for a good few years yet -- the ROM would ensure the XP system itself doesn't get altered in any way - I don't need Internet etc on it. I could have the ROM as a keyring FOB which would then be able to be connected to any PC I want. It would boot and operate a lot faster than by running it from a HDD or even an SSD. Only the OS and the hardware drivers / applications need to be installed. I'd use VMware on the HOST systems.

Why is one of my four internal hard drives listed as a Portable Device in Device Manager?
Removing it from Portable Devices does not remove it from Disk Drives and then it all looks normal and functions normal, until I scan devices or Windows reboots.
It also functions normal when it is listed in both spots, Disk Drives and Portable Devices, just annoys the hell out of me me that one drive is listed under Portable Devices, I want it gone from there.

i love portable .paf apps and pretty much download all i can find that i "might" use one day. every time i try to enter the folder i keep them in, explorer goes into the not responding state like it is indexing all the files, or scanning them for some reason. i have defender off, do not use any software based firewall or any real time antivirus scanner at all. the process to enter the folder takes over a minute and every time i restart my system the same thing happens again. as long as i dont shut down then it is instantly accessible like all other folders on all my other hdds including the same hdd that the folder is on. it only seems to happen with the .paf files.
the folder is only 409 files at slightly over 5gb.

First of all.. let me say that this HDD does not have any kind physical damage. It has not been dropped.. nor it has a clicking or beeping sound.
The HDD is SeaGate FreeAgent Go 250 GB. I always watch movies in bulk. So I copy it to my HDD and plug it in the TV and use it. Today when I plugged it in to my PC for watching another set of movies, the copying was not going in a stable manner.. instead the graph showed mountain-like copying.. i.e. first it goes at much speed and then it loses and fall back to 1 or 2 mb/s.. So I thought that a defrag could set things right.
I defragged it and went for a coffee.. After coming back, the defrag was complete but i was unable to open the HDD.. I safely removed it but it said it was in use.. I shut down my PC and unplugged it.. turned on my PC but when I insert my HDD its unreadable.. it shows no percentage of free space.. only just Local Disk F.. ( earlier it used to show FreeAgent GO) I ran chkdsk F: /f /r.. but it showed some error.. I closed it. The log file is attached..
Now whenever I open my HDD, its stops responding.. I know it can be solved..

Neither the start screen nor the search feature within Explorer will return any results if the files I want to look for are on my secondary HDD. This is a bit of a problem as all of my documents, pictures, videos, downloads etc are on this secondary drive.
I can even go into the documents library and search using Explorer, and it still won't find anything that I search for.

I have a lenovo laptop that came with Windows 8 x64.
I used ProduKey to extract the license key of my Windows 8 x64.
I downloaded a Windows 8.1 x64 ISO and tried to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 using a USB. It asked me for a key, so I put in the key that was extracted. It said the key was in valid.
I also went to this website, Upgrade Windows with only a product key - Microsoft Windows Support, and tried to use the key for both Windows 8 and 8.1, but both of them didn't work.
I booted the USB in legacy mode (NOT UEFI mode)

Win 8x64. Just got a UAC flag that Windows backup app wasn't working (see attached). Looking at Windows 7 File Recovery in the CP, all it shows is "Backup or Restore Your Files" at top and the rest of the page, which usually has some choices, is blank. Never seen that before. Rebooted to be sure.

Running Windows 8 on my ASUS laptop and all of a sudden it has started opening all folders in a new window... every time without fail... even though the folder options are showing "Open in same window" selected.
For the record, I did try unselecting and then reselecting the same window option, applied it to all folders, rebooted my system... and nothing. Everything still opens in a new window every time.

My computer is a bit like the car; turn either of them on, and expect it to do its 'thing' but when it doesn't.... stuck!
My windows 8 library is not working...
Anyway, I've researched how to delete and then reinstall/program. What I cannot understand is why this library facility has so many awful reviews on the forum, who are slatting this facility and how it eventually clogs up memory with duplicated files.
there are many attempting to disable or totally eradicate it from the computer There is a "registry hack" website for windows 7, which disables the library.

Running Windows 8.1 and apps are not working. They were perfectly fine this morning, then later today, every one of them, except like two that I know of, IE and the Store. Other than that, music, Facebook, twitter, dropbox, etc. they're not working.
I've refreshed my Windows 8, didn't fix it. I've also done sfc /scannow and it found nothing wrong.

I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 and noticed my USB 3 WD Passport external hard drive stays powered on as well as my round LED's (Lock/Start/Reset). With Windows 7 I just enabled EuP in the bios and that powered everything down when I shut down including the LED's. Now with Windows 8.1 that function doesn't work. They all stay on. I tried disabling all the power functions in Power Management for the USB but still, the power stays on. For some reason the EuP enable function does not work like before. I believe its related to Windows 8.1 since it worked fine with Windows 7. For some reason they locked USB power after shutdown.
PS: I already tried resetting the bios to no effect.
