After the upgrade of 8.1 I got display issues because the resolution of Windows Apps (Metro UI, Internet Explorer, Login Page ...) has become lower than the resolution of windows. In my setting it is set at maximum level.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThere's a workaround right now to run metro apps in lower resolutions by the "Downscaling support" trick from registry.
However I found out that resolution check can be bypassed by editing a file in Windows 8. This works on Windows 8.1 too!
Both primary and secondary displays are 1080p, native. Windows says both are running at 1920x1080, but I can visually see the secondary display is running a lower resolution. The GPU is GeForce GTX 560M, with the latest drivers. I didn't have this issue with Windows 7.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded Toshiba Satellite A100-998 with XP Media Centre to Windows 8 Pro. Before upgrade the screen resolution was 1280x800 on a NVIDIA GeForce Go7300 graphics adapter.
Windows 8 pro upgrade has installed only the Standard Microsoft Graphics Adapter of 1028x600. I have searched registry for Display1_DownScalingSupported key but it does not exist.
I have attempted to find another driver on the NVIDIA and Toshiba web support but I am unsure what would be the right one. The laptop clearly can support the higher resolution, how to resolve the issue.
Background: Yesterday, I upgraded my graphics card and updated from 8 to 8.1, so there is the possibility that this is not an 8.1 issue.
I have 3 monitors running at 1920x1080. Two are computer monitors and one is an hdtv. With Windows 8, the experience on each monitor was identical.
The Problem: With 8.1, one monitor (the hdtv) is scaling things funny. At first it was like all applications (desktop and metro apps) were magnified on the screen. As I dragged an item from screen to screen, I could literally see it magnify once most of it was on the hdtv screen. Icon size, however, remained consistent across displays. After enabling the "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays" options, desktop apps stopped magnifying.
Nevertheless, the metro UI keeps scaling up unnecessarily on the hdtv. In the pics below the left monitor is the hdtv.
I almost exclusively use the hdtv for metro apps, but at this size, it's horribly inefficient.
I am trying to find a way for the apps to open on my second display while keeping the MUI/metro up on the first(main) display. For example watch hulu/abc/media center app on my big screen while playing around in the MUI/metro ....

I bought this particular computer for the Intel wireless display, but after upgrading (is it really an upgrade?) to windows 8 my WiDi is no longer working. I tried to install the latest drivers from Dell support but it tells me my platform is not supported.

Pretty much, any apps which have the purple wheel splash screen do not load (presumably crash). Normal windows settings work fine. Windows applications and Metro apps works with no hitches (I have none downloaded but default Music, Games all start with no issues).
How would Microsoft suggest an Intel 3600/Atom 2800 user running 8.0 however incapable of running Metro apps or accessing the store update to 8.1?
Machine manufactures, Microsoft and Intel have not taken responsibility for creating video drivers capable of running Metro apps on these Intel 3600/Atom 2800 recent machines, they pass the 8.0 Windows compatibility check and were advertised by manufactures as being Windows 8.0 ready.
Having already purchased machines and Windows 8.0 we feel somewhat discriminated against, and cheated out of our investment once again?
Ever since upgrading to 8.1 I am unable to use the mail app, the store app and most metro apps. when I open one of them the immediately get stuck and eventually crash. Another issue I found is that the brightness adjuster wont work no more.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI purchased a new Toshiba laptop with Win 8.1. On my old XP Dell, I was able to copy a 699MB folder of music MP3 files to a CD to play in my car. I've done it many times, and have 8 folders on my computer that I frequently copy to CDs for that purpose. In the past, I've copied 700 MB of files to a CD without difficulty, so I learned to maximize the number of files by storing the data in groups of 699 MB to avoid overloading a disk.
I tried to copy those folders to a CD using the new Win 8.1 machine, and have discovered that the CD capacity is only about 696 MB. I'm using the same CDs, and attempting to copy the same files. The only difference is the operating system and the new hardware. When I contacted Toshiba, the tech said Windows 8.1 stores files differently on CDs and the capacity is about 2MB less than on older machines.
Can this possibly be true?!? Is this a Windows 8.1 problem, or a hardware problem? Do I need to use my older XP computer to maximize the number of files I can store on a CD?
I am new to Windows 8, which I am using with a non-touch screen so I am dependent on the mouse for controlling actions. The Start Screen has enough items on it to require me to scroll across to see them all, even when grouped. I would like to be able to have a second (lower level) screen which opens when I click on an item in the main Start Screen. For example, Microsoft Office has about 8 programs within it (Word, Excel, etc) and at present these are all separate items on my Start Screen. Is it possible to have just one tile on the Start Screen (labelled MS Office) which, when clicked, leads to another screen on which the eight programs appear?
Alternatively, (and this perhaps should be a separate thread) is it possible to have separate icons for these programs on the Desktop (but not in the Taskbar). I noticed that some programs which I installed appear on both the Start Screen and the Desktop, while others only appear on the Start Screen.
Do you think it will ever make it so you can "snap" using lower resolutions?
My Asus tablet does 1280x800 which is lower than the 1366x768. I know there was a hack on the earlier releases but any way there would ever be a way to do this on lower resolutions now.
About 1-2 weeks ago, I had 15GB of space left on my SSD that is solely committed to OS and drivers. Today, I have 2.9GB left. This occurs especially during games, my native resolution is 1366x768 but whenever I choose a lower resolution than that in games, the size of the game on the screen becomes smaller than my laptop's display/screen (15.6"). Why does this happen? Is it a laptop issue only? My older laptop had the same problem.
PS: I have the latest graphics drivers.
When entering letters and numbers, that I believe are used to prevent Robo emails, do I have to use upper and lower case letters? I have a heck of a time getting those to take, and have to repeat them several times.

It will be a document that I have created in word or excel on the exact same computer. I click on the folder in my library, find my document, double click on it, word or excel appears to start to open as a box displaying one or the other appears and then the error message appears. I click on "OK" in the error message and see the word or excel icon in my lower tray - click on that and there is my document. Not a huge deal but definitely not the way things should work..

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy wifi on my laptop keeps acting up. at a random time the wifi bar in the lower right hand side turns to a yellow exclamation mark over it, after hovering over it it says 'limited'. Usually if i just turn off the wifi then immediately on again it will sort it out.
Can't work out if its a driver issue, my isp or a windows 8.1 issue. The laptop i have is an assus k53sv. the driver i have installed is 'Qualcomm Atheros AR9002WB-1NG'.
IE Metro tile is missing from my metro start screen. It's not in the 'all apps' list either. when I go to program default, it is set as the default browser. I went through all the checks in the tutorial on here, but at best, I can only get the desktop IE tile to pin to start. I would rather have the metro version tile on my start.
View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:

When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:
Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104

Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.
Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:
This PC doesn't meet system requirements
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.
I've just upgraded from win8 to win 8.1 using the windows update (store), my questions are :
1. Can the ISO file that was automatically downloaded by the system during windows 8 upgrade to 8.1 be saved or backed up? the download was about 2.6 GB.
2. If so can the backed up file be used to do a "clean install" in future on the same machine?
the OS itself feels much snappier specially restarting/shut down and startup where in Windows 7 is much slower However, my 3DMark score are 10% lower in Win 8 and so is CrystalDiskMark and AS SSD Benchmarks
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on my Toshiba Satellite P75-A7200 laptop. I was previously running Windows 8, 64 bit and primarily just using the Desktop mode. I immediately noticed that the 1920x1080 resolution on Windows 8.1 made everything 10-15% smaller.
Ultimately I decided to refresh back to Windows 8, but the resolution issues remained. I've tried scaling to 125% but that's too large.
i know 1080 can't physically fit in a 720 resolution. The reason I ask is because my Vizio Blu-ray/Internet player automatically detects the display as 1920x1080 (the TV allows this, showing the resolution box in the corner and the picture being nice and crisp. It looks pixelated and letters are jagged in 720p).
My computer, however, only detects the TV in it's native resolution of 1360 x 768 (or was it 1366?). If my blu-ray player can pull it off, what is limiting my computer from doing the same? (The option to go to 1080 isn't available and a custom resolution in the Nvidia CP looks downright awful)
