I was cleaning up my start menu when accidentally i deleted the pc settings app and from that moment my pc settings panel does not open any longer.
I am referring to the win8 pc settings not to the classic control panel.
How to fix it without any refresh, reset, reinstall ..
I tried to reinstall windows 8.1 and it deleted my files I used it as a back up drive on my windows 7 pc I had 2 drives one with 7 the other 8 it ran fine when i set it up and used it a few times but the last time i was trying to boot it. It crashed so I tried to reinstall windows files but when it booted back up my files was not there i did not format to HD just reinstall windows i have the windows old files but my files are not in them i can run recovery software and see my files but before i do any thing that i can not undo I want to know is there a way to get my files back i have used recovery software in the past and only got back a few files so I am trying bypass that if I can.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I boot to windows 8 I get a blinking cursor in the top left corner for about 1 second, then I get sent to the BIOS. If I boot to my Linux hard drive however everything works fine.
I figured I would just install a fresh copy of windows, but when I boot to the install disk (I tried both 64 and 32 bit), the windows 8 icon shows up and I get the spinning dots for maybe 10 seconds or so then I just get a blank back lit screen. Is it just coincidence that my drive failed at the same time as both disks failed or is there maybe something hardware related?
I accidentally deleted the entire My Pictures folder from my library. How do I get it back? I was trying to delete an album and it deleted the entire library of pictures. My photos are still in the Windows 8 library just not the My folders library.

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy Dell Inspiron 3520 was going quite slow for unknown reasons so I decided to 'refresh' it using Windows advanced start-up setting. Since that time I have been unable to install Windows updates. Well, I can 'install' them, but they won't 'configure'. Once installed and 'configured' 100% I get this error message advising following reboot : "Failure to configure updates. Reverting changes". The laptop then stays paralysed on that screen.
This only started to happen AFTER I "refreshed" my laptop, which was running Windows 8.1 pretty-much problem-free, though a bit slowly, until a week ago. For now I have found a temporary 'fix' by disabling automatic updates; otherwise the laptop is constantly stuck on the "failure to configure updates" error page (because, obviously, it's automatically attempting to install updates). I have done all the standard troubleshooting, including running MS Fix It, Dell Dr ('My Dell' found no hardware issues), MS Malware removal and Mcafee anti-malware. All reported "no issues". I have been in command prompt and found no issues I even tried to 'refresh' the laptop again two more times. I have also spoken to two Windows "technicians" and allowed one of them to remotely access my laptop. He found no issues or "violations".
Obviously, the temporary 'fix' of turning off auto-updates isn't a long term solution, and 'refreshing' the laptop hasn't worked (it actually caused the issue). Running Windows 8 on Dell Inspiron 3520.
I'm guessing full format needed? - Would a format resolve the issue, since a 'refresh' caused it?
I deleted my music from my music app and cannot re-add it. The files were added automatically the first time, but now the app won't add them. Can I refresh the cache for the music app or what can I do?

I just had my laptop install Windows 8.1 tonight. It's a clean install, by the way. Now the problem is I noticed that every time I restart my laptop it's power plan reverts back to "power saver", I had it set on "high performance" before. I own a Samsung laptop, model is NP535U3C-A01, Series 5.

I recently purchased an Asus N56VJ with Windows 8 pre-installed. At first I was trying to downgrade to Windows 7, but could not get past the windows splash screen trying to do a clean install . Anyway, while I was trying to figure out how to install windows 7, I was messing around in the bios. I decided to just stick with the Windows 8, but my bios is screwed up. I do not have any boot configuration options anymore. I tried to flash my bios, but the bios was still the same. I did a full reset on my machine, and still no change in the bios. Is there any way to get my bios options back to the factory settings with all the options?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've decided to go ahead and reinstall w8pro given my extensive messing around with it has finally caused some quirky, unexpected results - it's a relatively new installation, so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle, didn't get a chance to install a lot of third party programs and such. The thing is, I did purchase and install the Windows 8 media center pack - how do i go about getting this back? do i have to contact ms? I'm fairly certain that i don't have an activation number for the pack, if i recall i just paid for it online and then was allowed to download it and install it.
Also, i thought i would go ahead and do a clean install all over again as opposed to a reset or refresh given i want to make certain that i'm starting from scratch again... or do you think a reset or refresh might be the better option (i'm not concerned about keeping any personal settings or files intact).
I recently deleted a user account, and clicked yes to also delete all associated files...the user was successfully deleted, however, the user's folders/files remain, and cannot be deleted. Is it possible to associate that user's folder with a new user's login? If not, what needs to be done in order to delete the remaining user folder?

store couldn't work right, task manager needed more than 2 minutes to open, shutting down needed more time than windows 7, i decided to make a refresh (the function of windows, you can use to reset them somehow without losing your files). It goes slow all the time, whenever i click anything. I've downloaded and installed all of the updates.
Notice that i have only the basic programs running and mcafee (i know it's "heavy" programme but i didn't have problem before the refresh)

My desktop is completely blank after doing a refresh on windows 8.1 keeping my files and settings.
I have rebuilt the icon cache and run sfc /scannow
There is no restore point because the system is refreshed.
I was getting repeated blue screens of death. My laptop would crash and then restart only to crash again within 2 minutes, this just kept happening. So I figured I would just factory reset my laptop because it should have a recovery image on it since there is no optical drive. The factory reset failed at 64%, so I did it again and it failed in the exact spot again. Now the computer won't boot up. It says automatic repair which ends up failing and it gives me 2 options to either shut down or go through the advanced options. Is there anyway I can download windows 8 onto an external drive and install it like that? I have no clue what to do at this moment.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to perform a System Refresh against once of my computers. However, when I try to launch the System Refresh option, it claims Windows is missing some files to do so and to insert a Windows installation media or recovery media to claim those files.
Here's the trip-up: I created recovery media on another Windows 8.1 computer and that STILL didn't work (said something about the media not being valid, despite being generated in the same OS). How do I get this to work?
I did do my homework on this issue and apparently having done the Windows 8.1 upgrade through the Windows Store strips out its ability to do a Refresh/Reset unless an ISO is present (of which you don't have one of course because of how you did the upgrade; chicken and egg problem right there). Two of my computers were done as Windows Store upgrades but my Ultrabook was not (for that I did a complicated jig that allowed me to keep all my installed Windows 8.1 Preview software while still moving to the Windows 8.1 final build). However it doesn't seem to matter as even the Ultrabook, despite its unique upgrade path, still fails to start a Refresh (should I want to do one there) so the problem is all over my Windows 8.1 machines.
After updating from 8.0 to 8.1, I (like many others) lost the refresh option. Any way to get it back?

I searched on C drive and, of course, it's not there. I found it or something similar in File Explorer (but with a new name I believe). I copied the entire folder to the desktop. Now, when I add something to dropbox (one of the folders in the folder I deleted) the document is in dropbox on their website, but not in dropbox in the folder on the desktop that I just copied to. So....
How do I locate the folder I accidently deleted that originally contained many important files (e.g., AppData, contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Dropbox, favorites.... music, pictures) etc.?
I was in the process of "sending to" the information from the original desktop folder to Dropbox as a backup - when the computer hiccupped or whatever and instead of clicking send to, clicked delete. The folder disappeared and is NOT in the Recycle Bin. Except for the one I found in the File Folder with a different name, I can't find what I deleted.
