Debugging :: Windows 8.1 Gets BSOD During Startup / Restarting?

Aug 3, 2014

I'm running on a Windows 8.1 OS, and recently it keeps getting BSODs before starting up/restarting, but it still manages to get into Windows, and it seems to run normally after that. The error message is something like PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (rtwlane.sys). I have uploaded a minidump file of the most recent BSOD on my OneDrive here.

Debugging :: 8.1 X64 BSOD On Startup Even With Repair Disc

Mar 6, 2014

I was getting a few driver IRQL BSOD's when my system was running, I have had it built for about a week now.But now I can't even boot, i get KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED and SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED and some other errors I believe, after one of these comes up it says prepairing automatic repair then that will also crash and this then loops. I had seen other people saying they solved similar problems by removing the graphics driver in safe mode, but I can't even access safe mode so that made me think it might be a hardware fault.

I don't know how to save the dump file as I can't even get in to windows, can only access the BIOS. I have also tried running the windows disc to access advanced start up options to get in to safe mode but this also gives me a blue screen error.

I have a 4770K and Asus Maximus VI Hero mobo and 4x8GB Corsair RAM

Debugging :: BSOD During Startup With No MiniDump File

Jun 15, 2014

Today I installed a sound card driver called 5Hv2 sound card game. The disc was so small though. At first the setup didn't work due to platform error I think so I ran it under Windows XP SP3 compatibility. So then it works and asked me to reboot the system.

After restarting, the startup was taking longer than usual. The ASUS logo screen stays for about 3-5 minutes then the blue screen appears but it is so fast that I could not see the error message or code. I thought maybe because the cd was still inside so I quickly open the drive and remove the cd. After the blue screen, it restarts automatically then only I can login. I checked the Minidump folder and found nothing. I also used the SF_Diagnostic_Tool and Grab All but no Minidump file.

I thought maybe the drivers of the 5Hv2 sound card was not compatible on my laptop but it works. I use my Siberia headset and use the sound card with no problem. But I wonder what's the issue here, I don't want another blue screen when restarting.

Debugging :: BSOD Waking From Sleep And Startup Hanging

Mar 12, 2014

Have attached the SF diagnostic zip.

My system is Windows 8.1, Samsung notebook, i7, 8gb RAM and 1tb hard-drive.

I updated the Intel Rapid Storage Driver but no improvement in situation of BSOD on waking up from sleep. Basically, the screen/desktop is visible and I can move the cursor and try to double click on programs, before getting the BSOD (collecting errors and restarting) screen.

I always do 'full shutdowns' /have disabled fast startup. Have also disabled some startup apps such as google updater and a couple others but the laptop is still taking around 3 minutes to boot with no HDD light activity for a couple of minutes (is this normal when fast startup is disabled???). Shut downs /entering sleep mode are swift.

On another note, Synaptics driver isn't installing and I was told that would work (for some reason) but that may not be relevant.

Debugging :: BSOD On Startup / Playing Games - Inconsistent But Common

Feb 27, 2014

Been trying to deal with a BSOD problem that resulted from KERNEL_CHECK_SECURITY_FAILURE (or something along those lines). I did some research and got it could be the RAM, HDD, or Drivers.

Scanning the RAM for 16 hours gave me two errors on test 10, passes 1 & 9. Testing the sticks individually found nothing, testing both slots found nothing. I can only assume those were false positives.

Next, I tried driver verifier. Boom. Instant crashes. Now, disabling it, I have the minidump file. Which driver is causing this problem?

Within the last 24 hours I received 2 Kernel Security Check Failures and 1 DPC Watchdog Violation. As best I can tell, the first Kernel error was while I was installing Dropbox. I received it again when I was trying to remove the SF Diagnostic Tool from my machine. I received the Watchdog Violation while restarting Reimage software. The following output from the SF Diagnostic Tool is from *after* these 3 errors and is also after Reimage finally finished fixing all it found and came up clean on a rerun.

Debugging :: Multiple BSOD Errors On Startup - Pre / Post Factory Restore

May 24, 2014

So my laptop has been getting multiple BSOD errors during or shortly after startup. I let my roommate download and play WoW and Ventrillo. And the issues started shortly after, first with the game simply crashing and escalating into the computer itself not working correctly. I figured the best place to start since it didn't have much stuff on it was to just put my stuff I needed on a USB and do a factory reset. Which seemed to make no change. I have run memtest once for four passes and it found no errors.

I can remember a few of the errors I have been getting.
Bad Pool Header
Memory Management
IRQL not less or equal
Kernal Security Check Error/Failure
There was also one or two other memory related ones that I cant remember the exact wording of.

Waking Laptop From Sleep With Lid Closed

Jan 30, 2014

I have about a week experience (pulled out some hair) with windows 8/8.1, but I consider myself pretty comfortable with Windows in general.

When my Windows 8.1 laptop is in sleep mode, I can wake it with a mere touch of my external bluetooth k/b without any issues, as long as the lid is opened. If I close the lid, I can continue to use it as its connected to a big Samsung plasma tv. But if I let the laptop go to sleep (or put it to sleep myself thru the menu), I am unable to wake it back; I need to pull it out from a/v furniture, open the lid and press the power button.

Is this a Windows 8 thing, an Acer Aspire thing, or worse it can't be done? Able to wake from sleep their Windows 8 laptop w/closed lid?

Make Programs Open In Monitor Previously Closed On?

Feb 20, 2013

Is there a way to make Windows 8 remember what screen you closed a program on and open it in that window? Right now, I have most of the stuff I open pinned to the task bar. How it opens now is what ever monitor I click on the program in, it opens it in that monitor. I understand the logic on that, but I was wondering if there was a way to make programs always open on a specific monitor. I.e. I always have outlook on my monitor clear to the left, visual studio in the middle, and my browser on the right. Is there a way to force those programs to always open on that monitor, regardless of which task bar I click on?

Network / Sharing :: Losing Wireless While On Hdmi With The Lid Closed

Feb 15, 2014

When I am using hdmi as the single display, I am losing wireless when the lid is closed. Closing the lid is arranged to "do nothing" on both battery and plug. Wireless becomes:

- Not able to see any wireless networks except the only one chosen as " automatically connect" and it cannot connect to that either.

I got so upset, changed a few settings in adapter settings, messed stuff up, so had to install the OS again.

Is that something normal that wireless acts up when the lid is closed on hdmi display? It never did this without the hdmi.

Now I am using it with the lid open.

Setup Installation :: BSOD At Startup / Wiped HDD - Failure To Install Windows 8

Dec 4, 2013

My troubles began just after an amicable game of Starcraft with my siblings (Starcraft 1 running through chaoslauncher in window-mode and LogMeIn Hamachi, on Windows 7 at the time). Apparently I closed out of the application too hastily, since my system seized and displayed a lovely and very informative BSOD (STOP: 0x00000116; nvlddmkm.sys).

This BSOD would return every time I would boot Windows 7, sometime during the loading screen. However, I could access safe mode just fine. I did some research and decided to reinstall the graphics driver through safe mode, but it didn't seem to work. Since this PC is primarily for games and all my important documents/media were synced with my laptop, I decided to wipe the HDD (using DBAN) and take this opportunity to upgrade the OS.

I got an .iso of Windows 8.1 from my university and created a bootable DVD using the Windows USB/DVD boot tool. Now when I attempt to boot it in my PC, the blue Windows 8 icon appears for about a minute and then the system restarts. I've put the boot disk into another computer and it won't even display the Windows 8 logo. It simply skips the disk boot even though I select 'boot from disk.' I've tried all of this with about 5 different DVDs using ImgBurn as well as the Windows USB/DVD boot tool.

Strangely, my Windows 7 boot disk loads just fine on the wiped PC, to the point where I can select the language, etc. and control the cursor.

Is it possible that the Windows 8 boot disk loads a display driver that is incompatible with my GPU? Or is it more likely that the disk burner I'm using is garbage? Could any tools on something like the Ultimate Boot CD provide any useful information?
