I dont want my roomate to see my programs like mail senders and such, but other programs like chrome, winrar, and skype we can both use on both of our profiles. How can I set this?

Apps / Software :: Missing Some Programs In Programs And Features?

Apr 2, 2014

Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.

Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.

I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.

Updated To 8.1 - User Profile Missing

Oct 11, 2014

This desktop computer came with Windows 8 pre-installed and was updated to 8.1 from the MS free download around a year ago. While updates were automatically downloaded, the settings were not for auto updates. I attempted to install updates a few months ago but got many failures (as did many others I read about) and after installing KB2919355 the desktop was messed up and the missing profile problem was evident. Did a system restore which fixed everything and it has been stable ever since - with no updates installed.

Today after several attempts (and hours) I finally got all the Windows updates installed without failures, However, when any application icon shortcut is selected, the "Missing Profile" message comes up. I am able to start the program from the Program Files folder using the executable file and once started all appears normal. Tried re-creating the shortcuts on the desktop but get the same error message. This applies to Firefox, Thunderbird, Word, etc. Also notice that the pressing the windows key + X does not work but windows + C works as well as windows + R. Those keys and icons all work from the administrator logon so the problem seems isolated to the default user.

After researching the problem I created a new user (while under admin privileges) but no profile was created. When attempting to logon to the new user, the message "The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded." Checked the User folder on the C: drive and the new user was not there.

So, before I give up and re-install windows 8.0 &8.1 ( and have to re-load a bunch of programs).

Accounts :: Windows 8 - Move User Profile To HDD

Jul 28, 2013

I built a new PC to be used primarily for gaming purposes, so I installed Windows 8 Pro onto 128GB SSD. I wanted to move my User profile to my HDD, and followed the directions posted here: User Profiles - Relocate to another Partition or Disk

After doing this and exiting Audit mode, Windows acted as if I had were installing the OS and wanted a product key. I skipped this step, went through the configuration, but when I used my email for my Windows account, it says that a user is already using that account on my PC. Obviously, because I had been using my computer earlier today. So since it knows there is a user with that account, why can't I access it when I start my computer? A friend of mine says I may have installed Windows twice on accident, but he isn't sure.

Accounts :: Cannot Get Profile To Reliably Sync To New Devices

Jun 28, 2013

I can't seem to get my profile to reliably sync to new devices or when I've tried clean installs on my main system. I have all settings checked to sync and the PCs are all trusted devices. Sometimes it will sync the desktop background and my profile picture, others it may sync some of my explorer settings. Sometimes it may not sync anything at all. My homegroup on any other devices also gets renamed to "winliveid_000" instead of the usual "winliveid@xyz.com." I've yet to figure out why this happens as well. I've tried deleting the data and trying again, all with the same result.

This has honestly all been an issue ever since I've installed Windows 8 and I'm starting to dislike the profile sync altogether. If it cannot reliably sync my data and all of it, I don't understand it's usefulness. I've also run the account troubleshooting tool, which gives a cryptic message saying "The following settings are turning sync off: Personalization." It gives no further details that I can see or look into and all settings are on. I've taken a look at Windows 8.1 and it seems that you have no choice but to initially use your Microsoft account to sign in, which is troubling. If it cannot be fixed, I may have to delete my synced profile online every time I try to reinstall my main system.

Maintenance :: Slow Boot Up And Random Log Into Temp Profile On 8.1 Pro X64

Jan 9, 2014

I have an HP laptop (G6-2005AX) with the following configuration

CPU: AMD A8-4500M APU 4-cores with Radeon HD Graphics
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7640G + 7600M Dual Graphics
Memory : 8 GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM (2x4GB in dual channel)
Mainboard: Hewlett-Packard 184A
Hard Drive: Seagate ST500LM0 12 HN-M500MBB 500GB 5400RPM

I'm using AVG free 2014 as AV and did a full system scan - no viruses.

The problem is that Windows 8.1 (64bit, pro) boots up really slow - taking upto 6-7 minutes. After it boots up and, well I don't know exactly how to put this - let's say "settles down", everything works as normal. After getting past the password screen, clicking on the desktop tile takes around 1-2 minutes to boot into desktop, after that opening any program (Chrome, MS-Word etc) will take 3-4 minutes - but after it has "settled", everything works as it should.

Also, another curious problem I am facing is that once in a while, when typing my password and logging in, Windows boots into a temporary profile (no apps, blank desktop) and a message appears on the notification area that "windows has logged you on with a temporary profile" or something similar - I need to sign out, then after I sign in again, my real profile gets loaded.

I thought the problem of logging into a temp profile, I thought was that the PC was not verified - I verified it by going to Change PC settings --> Accounts. But after 4-5 days, I see the option of verifying the PC again.

Windows 8 - Signed In With Temp Profile / Cannot Access Files

Nov 25, 2013

I have a problem with Windows 8. This morning when I went to check my ASUS Zenbook laptop, the PC wouldn't access the network, even tho I could see our home network was working. I did a hard reboot and returned several minutes later to find I had been logged in under a temp password and all the desktop files I had were in the trashcan. Here's the error message that popped up in the lower right of the task bar:

"You've been signed in with a temp profile. You can't access your files, and files created in this profile will be deleted when you sign out. To fix this, sign out and try signing in later. Please see the event log for details or contact your system admin."

When I try logging out and then back in, I get the same problem. One other note: During the login procedure, this text appears in the bottom right of the screen:

"Windows Update. Your PC will restart in 2 days to finish installing important updates."

Hardware Drivers :: Windows Can't Load Scan Profile

Dec 8, 2013

I know that Windows Fax and Scan is not an ideal solution for scanning, but I'd like to avoid installing additional third party software, if possible.

WF&S works fine with my (Canon) scanner. It scans without a hitch. However, it is only able to use the default scan profile. If I try to create my own scan profile, I get this message:

"Windows can't load your scan profile. Your profile settings might not be compatible with this scanner."

I know that my intended profile settings (600 dpi, scan to PDF) are compatible with my scanner. How can I get WF&S to create a profile with my settings?

Accounts :: Windows 8 Image - Copying / Modifying Default Profile

May 3, 2013

I'm trying to set up a Windows 8 image. I want to edit the default profile so that when a new user signs on, they have the settings that I choose. In Windows 7 Pro, we could log on with a dummy account, edit the profile how we wanted it, then just copy and paste the information into the Default User Profile. With 8, when we do this, it doesn't always work. Most of the time, once it's on the domain, domain users cannot sign in. Or when they do sign in, the Metro tiles don't work. Any good way to edit and set up the default profile?

Accounts :: Windows 8 PC - User Profile Service Failed Sign In

Apr 28, 2013

The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded. (Window 8)

Today when I tried to use my laptop, I got an error when attempting to log on with my profile. It states:

"The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded."

I am using a different PC right now, of course. I had Googled the error, but none of the solutions (thus far) will work in my predicament. It is a Windows 8 PC, so I cannot access the system BIOS in order to perform a system restore, cause unfortunately, it goes straight to the log on screen(Which is become SOLID BLANK COLOR). I don't have a second profile on the system, either. I can't find any way to access the BIOS, Settings, Admin. Profile, or anything.

(SOLID BLANK COLOR) the back ground image for the log in screen is a solid color and not an actual image, anymore.

I can't access the start menu to open the CMD, because I cannot log into my profile and there is no other profile on the PC, besides Administrator ... Which is, unfortunately, hidden. I cannot make it visible, because I'd have to log in to accomplish such a task ...

The problem is not that I am incompetent and cannot conjure a new profile or complete simple tasks on a computer. My predicament seems to be that I cannot access anything. I need to log onto my profile in order to reach the CMD, or any other settings for that matter. Unless there's some, very well hidden, way to run CMD from the log in screen. I know that there is a minuscule detail that I am overlooking, but I cannot find it.

If there's any way to access CMD, BIOS, or anything at the log in screen.

When I opened mu laptop (I'm using ASUS) = Its going STRAIGHT to the BLANK SOLID Screen and There's that. Nothing.... I cannot find anyway how to log in using safe mode and try anyway boot using f1 or anything....

IMPORTANT Problem: didnt's have a cd Windows 8, just found out this problem, didnt even made another account... and other PC is using win7...
