Jul 19, 2013I am trying to edit my host file, but the system is telling me that I need to be an administrator, when I am the administrator. I made an attachment in word with screen shot for you to see.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am getting error "Save failed - Please check if this file is opened in another program" when trying to edit the hosts file in Notepad++. This has only started happening after a fresh installation of Windows 8 on a new computer. My previous computer with Windows 8.1 was able to do it correctly without any errors. I am using only one account on both computers, but for some reason on the new computer, the UAC keeps getting in the way. I have lowered the UAC warnings all the way down but that hasn't worked. Is there another setting I'm missing?
Note that I don't want to right-click Notepad++ and choose "Run as administrator" every time I want to edit a system file. I see that as a waste of time and an unnecessary step since I am already using an administrator account. I didn't have to do that on the old computer.
So I have a high res display on my laptop and the File Explorer looks like the fuzzy poop you get. Usually you right click the app in the task bar, then right click the name, click compat tab, and then disable dpi scaling, but the compat tab is missing for some reason for File Explorer and only that app. So it looks fuzzy and crappy.

Also, I use to have an Icon changer and manager program years ago. Any new program today that will change and manage my icons?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am currently on 8.1. I can't figure out what else I have to do, to save a config file to the root of C. It's an old application, and that's where the config needs to go.
I am worried that the medicine is worse than the illness in this problem - all the messing around with ownership might have damaged my windows installation.
Who needs to be the owner of what, on C: for me to simply save a file there?
My user is already the owner, and it's an admin user. I propagated across C: and then added System and Trusted installer with Full admin access.
Yet i STILL cannot write to C: Getting message: Error 0x80070522: A required privilege is not held by the client.
What more do I have to do, to write to my own c: drive on my own computer.....
I need to have a shortcut in file explorer go down a list of three targets and pick the first that works. Since I need this for about ten folders, it isn't really efficient to use separate shortcuts and just test which one is working at the time. The problem is that the name of the target is always changing and can sometimes take a month to go back to the original name. I could also use a way of giving the file another name [so one file with two names]. are any of these possible.
If not, is there another file manager I can use with these capabilities.
My brother lost his keyboard USB connector (it's wireless). If I were to go out and buy another one USB connector for the exact same keyboard, would it work?
View 8 Replies View RelatedFirst, I tried to edit the 'hosts' file but wasn't let save the change as having no permission. I'm the only user and administrator. I took over ownership and gave full rights to myself, rebooted, still the same.
Second, I tried to run notepad as administrator for the same reason. It wouldn't open. Then, I wanted to start it from an elevated command prompt, but cmd didn't start as admin either. This, like notepad, opened nicely as 'normal', neither as admin.
I run Windows 8 Enterprise 64 bit.
The option - hide extension for known file type change itself to unticked after I ticked the box and click ok.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony VAIO VPCSE and I have installed Windows 8 Professional. My region, language, input methods etc are set to English(Ireland)
The Problem When I turn on my laptop, there is the word "ENG" beside my clock and my input language is set to English (United States). When I click ENG; I am giving the option to switch between English(Ireland) and English (United States).
When I go to language preferences, the English (United States) language does not show as being one of my preferences
However, when I add the language and then press "Remove", the ENG beside the clock disappears
I don't mind what it is; editing the registry, deleting the English(United States) language.

View 3 Replies View Relatedmy Keyboard language input keeps changing from English (UK) to English (US)... pretty much all of my passwords have an @ sign in them so you can imaging how annoying this is lol.
This seems heavily related to my mouse - SteelSeries - World of Warcraft : Cataclysm? MMO Gaming Mouse / the control panel for that mouse as it only started happening after installing this mouse (both home and work pc).
I have tried to add English (US) >> Set it as Primary >> Then remove English (US).
Doing this removes the English (US) keyboard completely which is what I want/expect but then it comes back again after a short while?
Is it possible to change the English (US) keys to match that of the English (UK) so even if it does change to English (US) it wouldn't be a problem anyway?
Have my account and my wife's at home computer. Home build, excellent hardware, all updated and tuned in (as far as I can tell). Lately, when switching between accounts have been experiencing a 20 to 30 second lag before any response from any program. Example, I log in to my account, I click on email......it is a wait before response. In fact, if I click again before I get a response two instances of mail, or two browsers or any program comes up. It has not always been like this and, occasionally, it syncs in all programs as soon I log on.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn Windows 8 Explorer ( have they changed the name of it ) you know, the file manager. In the left side, the top of the "tree" you have Desktop, Downloads, etc ....
I created a folder when the pc was new called Jack's Stuff. Later, much later, I decided I didn't like the name with "stuff" ... so I changed it to Jack's Place. Instead of the typical My(fill in the blank). So it changed there. But following through the tree to it's origin down finding it through USERS>Jack ... etc. It's still in all cases called Jack's Stuff. Now this is not typical for XP and before that. I jumped right from XP to Windows 8.
Why didn't the name change everywhere and not just at the top of the tree? Is there a way to insure the name changes everywhere if you rename a folder. Oh, I tried going through USERS>Jack and changing it but I forget right now but it didn't work out completely kosher.
how to alter the time period before a computer running Windows 8 switches into "Sleep" or "Hibernate" mode. I find the default time period to be too short in practice - it is very frustrating to answer a brief phone call and then return to the computer only to find it has dropped into one or other of these states!

And it is defaulted to *Shut Down.I want to get rid of all the options except: *Shut Down and *Restart. And I want to keep *Shut Down as the default option to show up. -Is this possible?
I would also like to move the *Restart option so that it appears above the *Shut Down option (it is currently below.)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Win 8 (shoulda done more homework, but too late now!). Now when my speakers are plugged into my headphone jack, my volume control gets set back to 42ish. When I try to set it higher, I get a nanny warning about high volume causing hearing damage, and have to select "allow", which lets me change the setting, but sets it right back when I go to sleep mode or shut down. Most annoying as I use my laptop with speakers all the time as an entertainment center. Samsung, Windows 8.1 64bit, just updated audio driver, too.

Win 8 users. I am having a strange problem where I move files (user files, documents, etc) to subfolders and a little while later they are back in their prior location. I rebooted the computer and it is still doing this.
Sometimes the file will appear in the parent and child directory. If I delete it from the parent directory, it vanishes from the child directory as well. I have to rescue it from the trash. I drag it from the trash to the desired child directory and shortly after that, it is visible in the parent directory and child.
I can't manage files this way. I simply want to organize files but their location changes on its own.

Network Location - Set to Private or Public in Windows 8
I have a home network, several PCs connected to a modem/router (all with Ethernet cables), with ADSL access.
One PC has got Windows 8.1, with network settings as "private network", with sharing ("find devices and content") turned on. I am thinking about turning it off, to increase security, since I don't need to share files an printers.
My questions:
1) There is no risk to damage Windows by turning sharing on or off, with that "find devices and content" option in Windows 8.1?
2) After changing the sharing settings, I do not need to change any settings in Windows Firewall, such as resetting it to default?
I have a DELL Inspiron 15R touchscreen with WIN 8. First exposure to WIN 8 but I am learning to adjust. I have Administrator and one User Account set up.
