Bought a new HP Windows 8 machine w/1tb hd. Finally broke secure boot. Partitioned drive so C drive would fit in my SSD, eventually cloned C partition to SSD. I can get it to boot the SSD if I (esc) at boot to specify 1-time boot to sata0 (SSD). If I boot non-stop, boots to sata1 spinning hd (where I got the SSD image from).
Talked to HP, they won't suppot, as original hd is fine. They eventually told me I need to look into BCDEDIT. Here is a screen shot with both drives connected:
Looking for best bcdedit command to boot from sata0, as default drive, (instead of sata1) which is my SSD.
I just bought a lenovo laptop, which came with preinstalled Windows 8.
When I turn it on the first thing I see is: EFI network 0 for IPv4 (20-89-84-23-c3-45) boot failed Checking media (Fail) EFI network 0 for IPv6 (20-89-84-23-c3-45) boot failed
And then a blue screen: Default Boot Device Missing or boot failed Insert recovery media and hit any key Then select boot manager to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media
I have a dual boot system Windows 7 & Windows 8.1. When I start my PC I get the DOS black and white 'Choose An Operating System'. But when I am in Windows 8.1 and restart, I get the Windows 8.1 (blue flag etc) 'Choose An Operating System'. What I want is to get the Windows 8.1 version all the time.Is this possible?
I have a PC that I have been running Win 8 Consumer Preview since it was available. I have two HD's partitioned to dual boot Windows XP SP3 and Win 8, with Win 8 set as default. I have been running Win 8 over 95% of the time. Everything has been working fine until this morning.
When I came out of screensaver in Win 8 and attempted to get to my login page nothing happened. So i shut down using the power button, after that Win 8 would not start, nor could I get to the dual boot screen. After a number of tries i finally got the dual boot screen and attempted to start in XP. XP nearly completely started (I had desktop, task bar, desktop icons, etc), but then it shut down as well and displayed a blue screen and error message "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.".
I have tried starting from my XP install disk with the same error message ("A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." ). I have tried starting from USB flash drive that has my Win 8 Install. It is the same USB flash drive that i originally used to install Win 8. It hangs at the 'fish' screen. I have tried just starting the machine several times, but it hangs at 'Preparing Automatic Repair'.
I have everything disconnected (printers. ethernet, USB Wifi adaptor). The only things connected are my keyboard/mouse, speakers, and (1) 17" monitor. I normally run a 23" widescreen and the 17" monitor.
I have disconnected the slave HD and tried booting with XP install disk and USB Win 8 with no success.
Currently, both HD's are connected. I tried a normal start up and the machine is stuck at 'Preparing Automatic Repair'
This has never happened before such that I could not boot into either XP or the XP Install CD or the Win 8 USB Install flash drive, in order to attempt repairs to MBR or Win 8 troubleshooting diagnostics.
Complete error message on Blue screen:
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSk /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Running windows 8.1 and i use 3 browsers, my main (default) is Opera, the issues i have are opera is set as default browser in opera settings, but for instance when checking emails say overclockers uk i see something catches my eye, i click it and link opens in opera, not in win 8.1, it pops a box up asking how do you want to open this type of link, firefox, google chrome or look for app in dam app store [URL] ....

I went to go set photoshop as the default for opening a jpeg, and I noticed this weird option on the list that says %1. I don't know how to get rid of it it is very annoying. I tried cleaning the registry with CCleaner and removing "%1;" from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileAssociation. Nothing has worked so far, What is %1 anyway?
Simply for the home desktop and want to share with other kit on the home network.
When I boot up it appears I have to always tweak the settings :
1) Control Panel > System > Change settings > Network ID and select under "Select the option that best describes your network" so I opt for I tick "this is a home computer; it's not part of a business network." 2 )The reboot.
All works fine and all devices can be seen and read/write in accordance with the appropriate share settings.
Now the issue is when I next reboot the
Control Panel > System > Change settings > Network ID and select under "Select the option that best describes your network" will default to "This computer is part of a business network; I use it to connect to other computers at work".
So I have to got through steps 1 and 2 again.
How to I get Windows 8.1 Pro x64 to default to the "this is a home computer; it's not part of a business network." on each boot without having to manual configure.
I have a few Programs that have Databases. When the program is setup, the Database gets setup in My Documents. If I change the location to another folder, the Program still shows the Folder in My Documents. Is there a way to stop this?
I was messing around with the metro UI and was trying to organise it. Turns out i liked it the way it was when you first install windows 8. How do i get JUST the metro UI back to defult?
how can i set windows 8 to run all programs as administrator by default so i dont have to select "run as administrator" each time ? I have a program that auto launch on startup and it needs administrator right.
I only have one account on my PC and it is the administrator account..
I changed KMS server in my Windows 8.1 PC using this command:
[CODE][slmgr /skms testingkms.com:1688/CODE]
I was doing some experiment. Then I realize it is not MAK. It's just Pro Retail. Now I don't know how to set back to default KMS. And I'm getting this error all the time: check attached screenshot.
I have Win 8.1 running in my PC; I don't know how and when, but the default location of screenshots (as taken by pressing Win key and PrntScr together) has changed to a random folder somewhere in drive E. I know that location, and if this is possible, how can I change that default location to wherever I want?
Windows 8.1 upgrade. The "universal" search sucks. Control panel -disabled BING. But when I return to the search screen, and start typing, the default remains EVERYTHING. This excludes a lot of the paths FILES looks under.
Is there any way for Win 8.1 to default your search to FILES (not Everything, which excludes a lot of your index locations)?
I just got a refurbished ASUS K75DE laptop, and it came with Windows 8 on it. I am wanting to run a dual boot with Win7, so I disabled fast-boot just fine, and went into the UEFI BIOS and disabled the secure boot.
While I was there, I did like I have always done and set a BIOS boot-up password. I then proceed to boot to my Win7 installer USB Flash drive, but I was running low on battery power so I aborted the install and shut the computer down to try again later.
Now however when I get into BIOS to select boot priority, all options are grayed out except for system time and a few other non-essentials. At the bottom of the first BIOS screen it says "User Level : User" and I can't seem to find a way to reverse this issue. So now I'm stuck, can't boot to anything but the HDD because it is first by default.
First, some context: I have a Dell Inspiron 15R SE that came with Windows 8.
I've managed to get a working dual-boot system with Ubuntu 12.10. I can't remember exactly how I done that, but I remember that I had to disable secure boot. I think that the boot configuration those days was:
Secure boot: DisabledLoad legacy option rom: EnabledBoot list option: Legacy
This "configuration" worked perfectly for 6-7 months.
Then, one day (last week, can't remember the exact day), when I was using Windows 8 the computer crashed. I hard-rebooted and got this screen:
After executed boot-repair from a Ubuntu LiveCD dozens of times I've decided to eliminate Ubuntu temporarily and focus to get a system with Windows 8 working nice.
Then I used my recovery DVDs to recover the system. Yup, Windows has booted. But when I restarted first time I got the same error. Then I, digging a solution, pressed F12 after a reboot and got here:
The highlighted option allows me to boot into Windows 8. So I went to boot options (F2) and changed the following configuration:
Load legacy option rom: DisabledBoot list option: UEFI
Now I can boot directly to Windows without need to press F12.
But my objective isn't complete. I want to erase all Ubuntu entries from the seconds image and restore the legacy boot from the first imagem (because they worked before).
I did two things:
I erased all partitions related to Ubuntu (root partition and home partition).I created a Windows recovery disk (not a system recovery disk).
I used the recovery disk to run the automatic recovery procedure (I forgot the exactly name). I've runned it at least 10 times with no success. Then I went to command prompt to try the famous triad: bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot and bootrec /rebuildbcd. Still, no solution.
After creating a UEFI bootable USB thumb drive with Rufus (using Windows 8.1 Enterprise ISO x64), for a Dell Optiplex 3010 (configured as UEFI only, no CSM, latest firmware version, Windows 8 installed), I didn't see a USB boot option, so I tried to add one manually. Unfortunately I erased the existing boot option (boot manager) by mistake. Although there were two boot options for PXE booting, the machine will not start anymore, even when there is an active WDS server on the network.
I also see Led's 2 and 3 lighting up, meaning according to the manual 'hardware ok but bios possibly damaged/corrupt'.
I understand I cannot start the machine from a bios boot disk because of GPT partitioning, and the UEFI USB boot disk I made might be corrupt (as it didn't show up as a boot option), however I don't understand why it won't boot from the PXE network card, as these boot options are still there.
Can you change the default search engine in win 8.1 from bing to google. If i search something whilst in the metro ui it uses bing. can it use google instead.
I use snip a lot to use as post attachments and they are saved by default to Pictures.
When I am attaching any pics to posts when I go to Manage attachments it always defaults to Desktop. Is there a way to change this to default to Pictures?
So I created a brand new user in Windows 8 using my MSA. And I set it to set up as a new PC so that it wouldn't carry over themes or any settings from the previous computer. But as soon as I signed in, it had all of my old settings, themes, and configurations from my old computer.
So how do I set it so that it goes back to all the default settings like a brand new user logging into Windows for the first time?
Always when i install a new version of windows i change the default location of music, documents, downloads etc. Accidentally i change the documents folder to Documents without the after D: (don't know why windows let me choose this location in the first place). But I can't change the location, every time i right click on the documents folder to change the location, explorer crashes.
First I thought it wouldn't be a big problem by changing the default folder in different programs to D:Documents for example in Office. But for soms programs it's a problem, I can't change the default folder and it takes Documents which gives an error.
It's also creating random documents folders on my D partition.
How can I change the default folder for documents? I'm not talking about the library folders, but the folders underneath "This PC"
I'm running Windows 8.1 and think I have run into the same issue [URL] .....
My Anti-Virus has picked up a program which has removed the default page in question from my Chrome. However, when I open Internet Explorer, that page- "[URL] ...." opens and I have done everything I can to remove it. I've went into the Internet settings and removed it from default pages, etc and changed my homepage, but the page still persists. I believe I have also removed any relevant suspect programs from 'add or remove programs' but the problem page still persists.
Again, the antivirus seems to have removed all trace of 'iStartSurf' from my Google Chrome. I do not use Internet Explorer but these kinds of issues make me quite paranoid. Just whatever I do, Internet Explorer opens with that iStartSurf page.
I've put the iStartSurf page on the blocked site list for Internet Explorer which causes it to load no media on the page when IE opens up. However I'd still like to have it removed altogether.
I've recently begun encountering connectivity problems. Seemingly randomly, the wifi connection becomes limited and webpages/games time out. Whenever I repair the connection it is always at the "reset wi-fi adapter" step that it seems to resolve the issue.
Steps I've taken thus far are:
Uncheck the box under my network adapters settings that said "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"show hidden devices under the network adapter device manager and try to uninstall all but my ethernet and wifi connections. aside from these two connections I wanted to keep, there were two bluetooth devices that I don't use/need, two adapters hidden with odd names, and quite a few WAN miniports. I tried uninstalling all of these...some uninstalled, others uninstalled but came back with a restart, and some wouldn't uninstall at all.
Anyway, below is my ipconfig:

Is it possible to change the default sleep state to S3 ? So everytime i sleep command is sent to the computer, it would enter advanced S3 sleep instead of just the normal sleep state.
The reason i want to do that is because i bought a MCE remote (Rosewill RHRC-11002). It has a sleep button and i want to use it to make my HTPC enter S3 Sleep mode...
I have Two ethernet cards / Connections How can I tell windows to set Eth1 as default so web, steaming all the normal stuff uses this connection?I have set bittorrent up correctly to use the other connection but after a restart windows starts to use the bittorrent one. And if I change bittorrent to use the other one It just does the very same thing on the next reboot.
I am using IE11.x for my default browser but have a site that I go to often that requires Chrome. I am wondering if there is a way to set a desktop shortcut for the specific url and have that url opened in chrome while keeping IE as my default browser?
The last time I tried to organize the default libraries located at user/name/docs etc in my Tablet I messed up had multiple locations showing folders like music, documents etc .
This is what I would like to do:
I have created 2 extra partitions E : and F : I would like my Data( like .PST) and Document folders to be in E and my entertainment folders like music, videos etc to be located in F:
The last time I did this I created the folders in E and F drives then included them in the libraries, this truly messed up file explorer with "duplicate entries" .
a) Is the best way to just relocate the default library folders in User to other drives ie going to Properties /location etc b) Is it possible to delete the default folders in User , create folders in other drives then include them in the library ? in this case the folders wont be associated with user/name?
If I change the lockscreen to a different picture as the default ones, one of these default pictures goes away in the PC Settings Panel. Is there a way to restore them back so that only the default ones are there?
