Audio :: Cannot Set Default Audio Device Windows 8
Sep 28, 2013
Last night I restarted my computer and for some reason when I booted it back up I was not able to use my headsets sound. I went through the settings disabling audio drivers and nothing worked, I also tried to change the default audio device but that wouldn't work either. For some reason I can't change any audio settings when i press OK and open back up the windows the settings are the same.
The thing that puzzles me that everything was working fine until I restarted my computer. I am also confused why windows won't let me change my default audio device under the playback devices menu.

Recently upgraded my Dell Latitude E6420 to Windows 8.
When I attempt to use my Sony TV as a second monitor via HDMI cable, I no longer get audio. Cable is fine and worked previous to upgrade.
Video comes up fine. In "Playback Devices" (with both "Show Disabled" and "Show Disconnected" devices checked), Digital Audio is greyed out and unable to be selected as a default device - simply says "Not plugged in".
I've tried updating various drivers, but to no avail.

why my audio goes every time I plug in my mouse or external hard drive into one of the usb ports. The only way I can get audio back is by restarting the computer.
I'm running Windows 8 on ASUS UX32VD.
I've gone into Sound settings, Communications tab, and selected Do Nothing.

I'v been trying to get my new USB sound card (Roland Duo Capture EX) working with Pro-Tools 10, but when I choose the Roland as the playback engine on starting up ProTools, I get an error stating that it is in use by aother application.
Also, when I change the sample rate in the "Sound" window for that sound card, I get the following: "The Device is being used by another application"...
Is there some way in Windows 8 to check what applications are hogging the card?

I have been having sound problems with the speakers on an HP Ultrabook. There are times when the laptop speakers stop working. When this occurs, I go to Control Panel>Sound, select the speakers(only one set to select), select Configure and Test. After selecting Test, I receive the message Device In Use. The device is being used by another application. Please close any devices that are playing audio to this device and then try again. I've gone to Properties for the speakers, Advanced tab and unchecked option "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device". I've also used Run sndvol to try to determine the application, but it only shows Device:Speakers/HP and Applications:System Sounds.
The only way I've been able to get the speakers to work is to reboot or disable and enable the driver for the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.

When I was setting up my microphone I set it up so that the mic comes on when the computer starts. I want to reset it so that it doesn't do that and put it in the Quick Launch toolbar / system tray instead where it would be more convenient a la windows XP style.

I use my laptop and i plug it via hdmi into a monitor when I am at home, but i unplug it to take it with me to class. Whenever I plug the monitor in it defaults audio settings to the monitor and not to the laptop speakers, even though the default setting is laptop speakers. I have to change the default every time. I have Intel audio drivers installed (6.16.0.3131). It didn't do this until I installed the Intel drivers.

I been having issues with my Ativ Tab 3 so I shipped it back to Samsung to fix it. Before I shipped it, It always played the sound that indicated that a bluetooth device was connected. After receiving it, I noticed it had fresh copy of Windows 8 pro on it with drivers, etc. So I updated it to 8.1 and reinstall everything and noticed the bluetooth devices no longer play the sounds when they connect.Tried refreshing, sfc /scannow, and redoing audio drivers.

while going through my device manager, a yellow triangle sign caught my attention. It is under the "Sound, video and game controllers' labeled as 'Bluetooth Audio Device". When opening the properties, it says that "This device annot start. (Code 10) Object Path Component was not a directory object.
I went to the MSI website (The laptop is a 4 days old MSI GS70-229) and could not find the corresponding driver for this so called "Bluetooth Audio Device". Windows update was unable to find anything, and the "Roll Back Driver" button was disabled. Driver provider is Qualcomm Atheros Communication.

Basically I have an ASus ux301la (zenbook infinity) and i noticed that after installing Displaylinks software (port replicator software) my default sound device was called (USB AUDIO) and that my Realtek sound device kind of went missing (no sound devices on the playback tab in the sound settings). I had no backups at teh time as its a new laptop and i really dont want to re-install 8.1 from scratch as it took me over a day to configure this thing to my personal config.
So I uninstalled the diplaylink software and uninstalled/reinstalled the sound drivers from the asus site and each time i did so it would create a new sound entry, hence all teh duplicates. Now i still have a problem because although sound works, i have to manually select the correct playback device in VLC player and I cannot see any sound devices in the playback tab on SOUND settings.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L875-S7110 with Windows 8 that is a few months old now, and had been working fantastic until last night. Windows did an update, and now I have a red X over my sound icon that states "No Audio Output Device is installed."
Things I have tried so far to try to fix this:
I went to the Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers. I have "Intel(R) Display Audio" and "Realtek High Definition Audio" both listed with the little yellow caution icons on them. I have tried to disable, then enable each of them seperately and both together, which had no effect. I have tried to unistall both of them, restart the laptop, and let the drivers reinstall themselves, to no effect. I have tried downloading the latest drivers from both the Intel and Realtek product sites. The one from Intel seemed to install correctly and asked to restart the computer. There was no positive change to the audio though, stil the same message. The Realtek driver won't finish installing and throws the error: "Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure!! [Error Code: 0x000000FF]"
If I go to Control Panel > Sound, under both the Playback and Recording tabs, it says "No audio devices are installed."
If I go to Recovery, to try to roll back my updates with System Restore, I get errors on ALL of my restore points with the following message, "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: The specified restore point is missing or corrupt. Try again using another restore point. (0x81000201)"

My audio disappeared and stopped working. my audio icon has a red x on it and when i click it it wants to detect problems (it doesn't work).
what should i do? how should I diagnose the audio? I feel like this is hardware problem as it just happened out of the blue. The audio board has a USB connection (which is working) so the connection from it to the mother board is fine.
Installing and updating the driver did nothing. I can't get the device manager to detect the hardware (scanning does nothing).

I have 1 pair of Razer Megalodon USB headphones, on the start up of Windows 8.1 these headphones are not detected correctly. The only proof I have of this is in the device manager displays:
Universal Serial Bus Controllers -
Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed).
(Please see attached screenshots)
Once the device is disconnected and reconnected device manager then displays:
Universal Serial Bus Controllers - USB Composite Device
The device then shows in "Audio inputs and outputs".

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
Processor: AMD FX-1400 Quad Core
RAM: 8.00 GB
Storage: 1.73 TB of 1.81 TB available
System Type: 64-bit Operating System, x64 based processor
A while ago, my PC was having some lag issues that made the computer practically unusable. I found out in msconfig that I had almost all services running. I disabled many of the services, and I made sure not disable the necessary ones (i.e, Windows Audio.) I restarted my computer and there was a red circle with a white "X" over the audio icon. I clicked on the icon. A window named "Playing Audio" opened. On the window was a bar similar to the one shown while loading/downloading something. Above the bar said "Detecting Problems" and then "Scanning for hardware changes...". This went on for about 10 seconds. After this, the window changed. At the top in blue was "Troubleshooting has completed". Under that was "The troubleshooter made some changes to your system. Try attempting the task you were trying to do before." In the center of the window was "Problems found-Hardware changes might not have been detected".
In the search bar, I typed "Manage audio devices". When I opened it up, the window told me that there were no audio devices installed. I have checked in Device management under "sound, video and game controllers" That I have sound drivers installed (AMD High Definition Audio Device & High Definition Audio Device.) I have tried multiple times to uninstall/reinstall the drivers to no avail.

I've been trying to configure my brand new hp PC with Windows 8.1 pro to auto-sleep but I have been unable to do so. If it hit the power button or select sleep from the menu it will sleep, however.
I ran powercfg/energy and it appears from the report that this is the issue:
System Availability Requests:System Required Request
The device or driver has made a request to prevent the system from automatically entering sleep.
Requesting Driver Instance HDAUDIOFUNC_01&VEN_111D&DEV_76E0&SUBSYS_103C2B04&REV_10014&3288eeae&0&0001 Requesting Driver Device IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Why audio codec would prevent sleep? Is there anything I can do?

Recently I decided to go ahead and update to the Windows 8.1 version of the Realtek HD Audio Driver. I procrastinated because it told me I'd have to uninstall the original audio driver and I knew it would take a while to do everything needed. It didn't work that after uninstalling the original audio driver, then restarting like Windows told me to do, I kept getting error messages that forced my computer to restart until eventually my computer let me log in and install the updated audio driver.
However, with the updated version of this driver I had the same issue I got with the original one only much much worse. The original Realtek HD Audio Driver that I had on my computer made music and videos sound absolutely awful when headphones were plugged in. I found out that this is because the driver automatically puts on so-called "enhancements" whenever headphones are plugged in. This was a very simple fix, simply go to "Sound", then under "Playback" you click on "Speakers", then go to "Enhancements" and check the box labeled "Disable all sound effects." Then sound through headphones would return to normal.
Well, with the Window 8.1 version of this audio driver, I can do the same thing, but it never stays that way. Every time I plug in my headphones, it resets back to having enhancements. The strange thing though is that it says the enhancements are disabled but when I reactivate the enhancements(No difference in sound quality) then deactivate it again, suddenly the sound through my headphones is back to normal.
Did the audio driver not install properly? Is there something I can do to permanently disable the audio enhancements?

I have Windows 8.1 x64 and the following:
Radeon HD5450
Samsung TV connected via HDMI to graphics card
AMD HDMI High Definition Audio Device
Realtek HD audio
I have a strange problem that has not always been there but just recently if I don't have any sounds for about 5 minutes the HDMI audio seems to go into some sort of suspended mode and when I click on (generate) a sound (either system or music etc) it takes about 30 seconds for the sound to actually appear (manifest itself) through the Samsung TV speakers.
At first I thought it might be some conflict with the Realtek HD audio so I have disabled this (mobo built-in sound) in the BIOS and uninstalled the realtek drivers. This did not work.
I then thought it was probably an update to the Sound drivers or the graphics drivers for the ATI / AMD Sound card. I have installed the latest catalyst drivers and this did not work. I then fully uninstalled the catalyst drivers including the HDMI Audio and installed an earlier version 9.2.00 from 2012. This did not work either.
The only Playback Audio Device I have in the Sound settings is Digital Audio (HDMI) and I have tried disbling all audio enhancements. This did not work.
Please note that this happens even if I am using the computer (i.e. the screen can be on all of the time and it still happens after a few minutes).
Other things I have tried:
Power Config - disabled Link State Power Management for the PCIe card
One think I have observed (and I am not sure if this is a symptom or a cause) - The "Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation" process uses about 3-4% CPU while the 30 seconds or so elapses between the sound being invoked and it playing through the speakers. the rest of the sstem is relatively in idle. I can reproduce this by clicking on the sound and adjusting the volume a tad. It is meant to make an immediate "bing" sound to show the sound level is clicked or changed.
If I wait the 30 seconds then the sound eventually comes and then if I click on it again (or do other sound related things) then the sounds are instantaneous. Its only of I leave it 5 minutes or so with no sound activity. If I wait, say, 2 minutes the sound is instant too so long as their has been a sound event in the prior 5 minutes or so.

I need removing the SmartAudio application from my Control Panel. Every time I click on it, it says "failed to initialize" - I no longer have it nor do I need it. I would just like to get rid of it from Control Panel, it's not slowing my system down or anything, it's the OCD in me that is killing me seeing a non working function there!

When I watch YouTube videos I get random stutters where the sound skips. The image doesn't seem to freeze though, just the sound
I also get issues with the sound streaming music online, where it pauses for a second and stutters even though it's not buffering.
When this happens, NT Kernel & System shoots up in task manager and uses more CPU than the browser. This by the way happens in every browser, IE, Chrome or Firefox.
It doesn't happen when playing music in iTunes or watching videos from my hard drive.
That being said I'm not posting about a buffering type stutter, I am aware of that and this is not it. This is like basically suddenly the computer has a big spike in memory or cpu usage and the video/sound clip stutters for a sec. But it happens often enough to be very annoying. In a 15 min YouTube clip it happened 10 times.
I have reinstalled my IDT High Definition Codec and my Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver, but still the problem persists.
