Winows 7 Ultimate 64-bit?
Sep 8, 2011
I have 2 500 gb HDDs on raid 0 for a total of 1Tb with winows 7 ultimate 64 bit and I added a 30 Gb SSD and planning to install Ubuntu on the ssd , I have 2 issues, the major one is that everytime I install Ubuntu on the SSD using "install Ubuntu alndside windows 7" option the system will only boot to the ssd Ubuntu verytime with no luck to get windows running again, I know that windows is there on the HDD but I cannot get to it. the second problem is that before installing ubuntu , windows does not list the ssd or cannot find it. it only shows up on the start up list of drives as a non raid drive but windows 7 cannotfind it or format it or anything

Windows 7 freezing completely randomly
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Laptop: Model: Asus n61jq
CPU: Core i7 mobility Q720 1.60GHz
RAM: 4Gb
Video: ATI Mobility HD 5730
Western Digital 500GB HDD Scorio Blue series
Mobo: Can't get the model currently, can get it later if needed.
Dual Boot with Ubuntu Linux, using Grub2 as bootloader. Here's what I've tried:
-I've tried wiping and reinstalling- several times(With 2 separate known working discs).
-Updating Windows completely.
-Using the driver disc that came with the laptop.
-Using the latest drivers downloaded from Asus support.
-Flashing the bios with the latest version off Asus support website.
-Disabled all power saver management
-Wiped entire drive and recreated all partitions
-Ran Memtest86+ tests, no errors detected
-Running just bare minimum Windows stock software
-Ran with no peripherals plugged in at all.
-Uninstalled installed drivers, one by one
-Installed Windows XP SP3 32 bit with "hacked" drivers for my model and while it was slower, it never froze randomly for no reason.
-Thats all I can recall at the moment.
As a note: Linux does not freeze, nor do I have any issues with it at all. Laptop is on a cooling pad as well. Booting into Safe mode: works indefinitely without freezing. I also just realized I do not think I have run Windows without drivers installed, to test that- though they were working prior, but then again so was the OS in general.

I have a Compaq Presario C700 laptop running windows 7 and one day when turning on my pc I have encountered my wireless icon on my taskbar began showing grey with an orange looking cloud over it. I have dove into the system checking everything that I could think of to change it back to displaying properly. i am connected to the interent through a Netgear router and I can access the internet through either 2 ghz or 5ghz band but the icon will not display properly. No matter where I connect to the internet the icon still displays the same way. I thought it may have been my norton internet security that caused the issue I removed Norton and rebooted the icon remained the same I then Installed my Mcafee virus shield. When the problem began I had changed nothing nor had I installed anything to cause the issue. It just began one day.

I bought the full retail Win 7 Ultimate and trying to upgrade Windows Vista Ultimate to Win 7 Ultimate, both 32bit. I get to the Expanding Windows files to 21% and nothing. The program is still running and stuck at 21% but after waiting 3 hours I shut power off and Vista was reinstated. Why can't I get past 21% Expanding Windows files? I want to use the upgrade because I have a ton of programs on my Vista and don't want to spend days reinstalling them.

I've tried to upgrade from Vista Ultimate 32 bit to 7 Ultimate 32 bit numerous times now, all with the same result: a BSOD during the install process, which I get during (what I think is) the final step called "Transferring files, settings and programs."
The installation compatibility test warns me about my Nvidia drivers, which I've attempted to both remove and upgrade to the latest version, but that doesn't seem to make a difference (I still get the warning during the compatibility check, and I still get the blue screen). I'm not sure that's even the problem, either. I can't (easily) remove/replace the video card, since my mobo doesn't have onboard video, so I'd hopefully be able to avoid having to do that.
The error in the blue screen is a nebulous "REFERENCE_BY_POINTER" message. The technical information is "STOP: 0x00000018 (0x00000000, 0x86478030, 0x00000002, 0xFFFFFFFF)."
As a zip file, I've attached the setup log, error log, compatibility report, and what I think is the setup dump file, all of which I found in C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanther (I believe that's the right place to look). The logs complain about BthMig problems, which I think has something to do with bluetooth, but I don't have any bluetooth peripherals. I've uninstalled things that I thought might have some bluetooth things in it, like MS Intellitype (maybe a stretch), but again, no difference.
System specs: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, on an Asus M2N SLI Deluxe, with 4 GB of ram, and an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT. The hard drive I'm installing (upgrading) on has about 100 GB free.

I'm trying to upgrade a computer from Vista Ultimate (32 bit) to 7 Ultimate (32 bit) and I keep receiving this error message:
"This installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. For more information, check your computer's system information. To install a new copy of Windows, restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc, and then select Custom (advanced)."
Now, I double-checked all the system requirements and the system is compatible with 7.

I placed an order for this sytem;
Intel(R) CoreT i5-750 2.66 GHz 8M L2 Cache LGA1156
EVGA 9800 gt 512 mb
750gb HDD
4GB (2GBx2) DDR3/1600MHz RAM
EVGA P55 LE Intel P55 Chipset
700W PS
Now I have a choice;
Buy Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit from my school for 15$, or buy Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit for 105$
Would you say it's worth 90$ for 64 bit > 32 bit? I'll be using it for basic web browsing, MS Office, and the occasional game (Mainly just FPS, I'm sure I'll get Crysis soon). Oh, and I'm on a somewhat limited college budget.

I am a student and I recently purchased Windows 7 Professional through the $30 student program. However, I have been running the beta and have heard that there are some issues regarding upgrading from Beta which is the Ultimate edition to a lesser edition (ie Pro). I have access to a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate... but I don't have a genuine key for it, however I do have a genuine windows 7 Pro key. Will the windows 7 Professional key activate windows 7 Ultimate?

I have a Dell M1710 laptop, with 4GB of RAM. Currently I'm using Windows XP, which sees 3.2GB of RAM. I have a choice of installing either the x86 or x64 version of Windows 7 Ultimate.
I'm trying to decide which to install based on the 4GB RAM hardware ceiling that I have (motherboard can only accept two 2gb SIMMs max).
Would I get better performance (less hard drive paging) with the X86 version using 3.2GB of RAM, or the x64 version using 4.0GB RAM? How much overhead does the x64 version of Ultimate have, vs. the x86 version? Is that overhead more than 0.8GB of RAM?

if this has been asked before, but I was wondering how many GBs of storage Windows 7 takes up? I was recently given a 60GB SSD for my computer. The plan was to install Windows 7 and a few programs / games on the SSD and use my 3TB HDD for everything else. After I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and a few basic programs my SDD is practically full. Is this normal?
I installed practically all important and optional updates Windows offered. Looking back on it now I am thinking that this might have been a problem. Are there updates that take up a lot of memory that I don't need? Also is there a way to uninstall previous updates?

Unable to use rename. Command is normal for less than 1 second then reverts back to prior state. I have to use "properties" to rename files. Cannot use Favorites or Bookmarks. They drop down normally but disappear before you select anything. Cannot type addresses in Firefox or IE. I type 1 or 2 letters and they become high lighted in blue, as in rename, and are deleted for the next letter. Now I type the site I want in a search engines and enter the site that way. My system is built around a P5q3 Azus motherboard and runs 7 Ultimate, Norton360, Advanced System Care, and A-Squared free.

I have a pretty basic laptop (5-year-old Dell Vostro 1000). I use it only for web surfing, e-mail, and "tinkering." I recently upgraded RAM to 2GB (all it will hold), replaced the hard drive with an SSD, and upgraded from XP to Win 7 Home Premium (32 bit) just to see what would happen. There were obvious performance improvements, and I'd probably see more if I had faster internet service (only thing available here is 768K DSL). I know it's like putting lipstick on a pig, but now I'm curious to know if I could upgrade Win 7 to the Ultimate version (as I said, I like to tinker). Is there a 32-bit version of Ultimate? Windows Upgrade Advisor says this machine will not support 64- bit, though I'm awfully tempted to try it anyway. What would Ultimate get me that I don't already have? Is this a wacky idea I should just forget about?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit on desktop PC has been running fine for several months (legit dvd and serial number). It had a pretty old NVidia 6600 graphics card so I decided to replace it with a newer card as the latest 64 bit drivers didn't seem to work and so I reverted to the old drivers some weeks ago and all has been fine since.
On installation of the new graphics card the PC wouldn't boot. It goes to the black screen with the coloured widows logo and wouldn't go any further ( I know the card is OK it came from my sons PC). I tried a repair boot without the cd and that didn't do anything either. I reverted to the old graphics card. Still wouldn't boot past the black screen as above BUT if I leave it I can hear the chime as Skype starts so it would appear as though Windows is actually booting but not displaying the desktop.
I have tried a repair from the boot menu and from the original dvd and they just hang on the blue graphics screen with the birds and the white squiggle. I therefore decided that I would do a reinstall and a new install now hangs at the same screen. If I try a boot to safe mode the boot hangs at classpnp.sys.
Ideally I don't want to do a reinstall but I will if I have to and if I can get it to reinstall.

I unwittingly purchased a dodgy copy of Windows Ultimate a few months back - Microsoft just informed me a week ago. So I have now purchased a good copy of W7 Pro thinking I could just replace one with the other but on researching this, it doesn't appear to be the case. I have backed up all my files and programs onto an external hard drive and I have partitioned my C drive. If I install W7 Pro on the partition, will it work over and above the Ultimate? If not, can I just do a clean install with the W7 Pro from scratch and if so, will that work? I really don't want to mess my PC up as I use it daily for work.
