How To Find C:Users<user Name>AppDataLocal MicrosoftWindows

Aug 14, 2011

I am experiencing a problem with Micrsoft Word and Googled a solution which is to change the location of the Temporary Internet Files folder however, I can only get to a certain point. Here are the instructions:

This problem occurs because the Temporary Internet Files location for Internet Explorer is set to be an unexpected location. Specifically, the Temporary Internet Files location for Internet Explorer is set to be a location in which the user does not have permissions to create new temporary files.

ResolutionTo resolve this problem, change the Temporary Internet Files location for Intern...To resolve this problem, change the Temporary Internet Files location for Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:

On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options to display the Internet Options dialog box.

In the Internet Options dialog box, click the General tab.

In the Browsing history section, click Settings to open the Temporary Internet Files and History Settings dialog box.

In the Temporary Internet Files and History Settings dialog box, click Move Folder to open the Browse for Folder dialog box.

In the Browse for Folder dialog box, select the following location:

For Windows Vista, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008:
C:Users<user name>AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows

For Windows XP and for earlier versions of Windows:
C:Documents and Settings<user name>Local Setting

Note Whichever location you select, a folder that is called Temporary Interenet Files is created. And if it is necessary, content is migrated to the new location.

Click OK to close the Browse for Folder dialog box.

Click OK to close the Temporary Internet Files and History Settings dialog box.

Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.

Restart the computer when you are prompted.
When I get to the Browse for Folder dialog box, I cannot find the "C:Users<user name>ApplDataLocalMicrosoftWindows" file that is referenced in order to proceed. Here is what I see:
Gateway (C)
When I double click on that, the following folders appear:
Perf Log
Program Files
Program Files (X86)
Users
Windows
When I click on "Users" then a folder with my name appears (which would be "user name". When I click on my name then it shows:
Contacts
Desktop
My Documents
Downloads
Favorites etc; so how do I get to C:Users<user name>ApplDataLocalMicrosoftWindows? I have opened all of the folders such as program files, Windows etc; but cannot find a the files that I am instructed to scroll to. Any help is much appreciated.

Windows 7 Single User, Merging Users-all Users, Default User, Public, Etc?

Jan 24, 2012

My father replaced his Windows 98 machine with a new computer running Windows 7.He's currently on 32-bit ultimate, but we could change versions if needed. He's really hoping there's some way to force Windows 7 into a single user mode, primarily so C:usersAll Users, Default User, Public, and his own user are merged into one. It's absolutely driving him nuts the way it is.

[ACCOUNTS] Move C:users To D:users?

Jan 30, 2011

I just installed a new 64 gig SSD in my computer. I also have a 2T secondary hard drive. The SSD is not big enough to contain all the stuff that will eventually be in "My documents",i.e. under "users" so I need to move the users directory to my secondary hard drive but havewindows behave as it were in its original location.I did some research and found the following technique which seemed plausible (and several people said it worked for them)

1. Install windows normally.
2. After install, boot from installation disk.
3. Get into the command prompt by clicking "repair".
4. Use robocopy to copy c:users to d:users. The command line should be: robocopy c:users d:users /mir /xj /copyall
5. Verify all files copied successfully.
6. Delete c:users. Command line should be: rmdir /s /q c:users
7. Delete c:documents and settings. Command line should be: rmdir "c:documents and settings"
8. Create junction to new users directory. Command line should be: mklink /j c:users d:users
9. Create junction for the old "documents and settings". Command line should be: mkdir /j "c:documents and settings" d:users
10. Restart computer.

Note:When in recovery mode the disk drives end up with different drive letters than what the normally have.Consequently my SSD drive which is "C" became "E" and my hard drive which is "D" became "C". Confusing, but I adjusted the above commands to reflect this. All seemed to go well until I rebooted. The computer booted up fine, but when I entered my password to log in windows complained that it could not find my profile. Since I could not log in at all I was forced to re-install windows. Supposedly, this is doable and I NEED to do it asap as my SSD will not hold all the stuff that will eventually be in "users".

Show Processes From All Users, With No Other Users

May 4, 2011

I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.

So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.

Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?

XP VM For Multiple Windows 7 Users?

Apr 6, 2012

I need to create a XP VM on a win764 box that has multiple users. I want all the users on the Windows 7 box to use the same VM. I also need it to automatically login to the VM without asking for credentials from Windows 7 or xp. I've turned off integration and done the "control userpasswords2" thing. When I log in as a new user and start the VM, Windows 7 pops up with a credentials box. Once I enter the username and password and check "remember credentials" it goes fine. I want to eliminate that initial credentials box though.

How Windows Work With Users Folder

Aug 26, 2011

I like my comp to have only one download location, only 1 temp folder, etc.Regarding users folder I don't know how windows works with these folders, because in every Windows OS I can recall, there have been always multiple folders, even if you set your computer to work with only one user that is you, the absolute and total administrator. Then you can see a default user, a "yourusername" folder, a public folder, an all user folder. Also when installing software sometimes they put their shortcuts into default, sometimes into all and sometimes just in yourusername user folder. Is it safe to delete all folders but the "yourusername" folder? if not, which are the folders you have to keep? Is there a way to make these folders to converge into one? A thing i hate is installing software and not knowing where did it put archives into my computer. I usually check the program files folder, but have seen many times left over folders, some empty some not. Then again the users folder is a mystery to me as if it will keep files from a never used again software forever or not. There is also a Program Data hidden folder.

Users Accounts In Windows 7 Or Run As Admin?

Apr 7, 2011

In Win Xp Media Center I always ran my computer as the 'admin' because for some reason certain programs wouldn't run or install as a regular user. In my Windows 7 machine I'm wondering if it's normal or advisable to create a normal user account for myself and always use that or run as admin all the time?

Does Windows 7 have the same problem I experienced in XP, or was I doing something wrong in Xp anyways and should've used a regular user account?

Multiple Simultaneous Users On One Windows 7 Computer?

Aug 3, 2011

I am thinking of upgrading our family's two computer systems, which are about 8 years old. To build/buy a decent computer will cost about $500. Could be done a bit cheaper, but then two computers will double the priceSo, I was thinking. Most modern computers have multiple output video cards. Most computers have multiple USB ports. Would it be possible to plug two keyboards, two mice, and two monitors into one computer and have two people using that computer simultaneously? This should work just fine from a hardware perspective. With USB hubs and multiple video cards, maybe 4 or more people could use the same computer simultaneously. I would like to do this on Windows 7.I come from a UNIX background and this sort of thing is done all the time on UNIX systems, either text mode or graphics mode. The available hardware is very ripe for this type of usage. Its easy to get multiple monitors and multiple keyboard/mouse connected to a computer. Even multiple sound cards. CPUs are powerful and multi-core. Memory is cheap and plentiful. I think this would be a very good use of multi-core CPU

Re-installing Of Windows 7 While Using Existing Users Folder?

Feb 19, 2012

I have a system with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed on the C: drive and the Users folders moved to the D: drive (per the directions in this tutorial User Profiles - Create and Move During Windows 7 Installation. I have a new motherboard (Asus ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3), CPU (Intel I5-2500k), memory (Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 ), SSD (Corsair Force Series GT 120GB) and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on order that I want to swap into this system. Well, actually, I guess that it is mostly a new system with my old D: data drive, power supply and case.I have a few questions about the best way to go about getting up and running with the least amount of headaches: The new MB has a UEFI BIOS, so does that mean that it will automatically create a GPT style disk on the SSD for the new Windows 7 installation, or is there the option to create a MBR style disk? The reason that I ask, is that I use Macrium Reflect Free to make drive image backups of the C: drive periodically and it doesnot work with GPT disks apparently. My thoughts are to leave all of the data on the D: drive as it is, and do a clean install of Windows 7 on the new SSD after all of the components are swapped out. Would it be better to rename the Users folder on my D: drive, install Windows 7 and use the same tutorial as above to move the Users at this time, thus creating a second version of the Users folder and then delete the new and rename the old, or would it be better to install everything to the new SSD, and then after installation, then move the individual folders and point them to the existing folders on the D: drive? Is there a difference in moving Users folders during installation and moving after installation? It looks to me like the move during installation moves the ProgramData folder as well. For those that do clean re-installs, is there a good generic way to preserve application preferences/configurations/settings for installed applications and then be able to use them after everything is installed back? If I can use the existing Users folder that is on my D: drive after the install of Windows 7, will this do what I am looking for? In the past, I have used various techniques like screen prints, some apps have a preferences file that can be saved and moved back,
