Clean Install With A Upgrade Win 7 Version
Just to let you all know that I have confirmed that you can do either a clean install, custom install, or upgrade install with a retail Upgrade version of Windows 7 and activate it on a clean unallocated (blank) drive or partition without any other OS installed or with one installed. It does not matter.

WARNING

Remember that you need a valid qualifying previous version of Windows to use a Upgrade Windows 7 copy legally. Microsoft only made doing a clean install from a upgrade Windows 7 possible to make it more convenient so you do not have to reinstall both the old Windows version (ex: Vista) and upgrade to Windows 7 everytime you needed or wanted to reinstall.

If you do not have a valid qualifying previous version of Windows, then you are violating the terms of Microsoft's Windows 7 End User License Agreement and could get your product key number invalidated by Microsoft. Plus, it is considered illegal.

For more about this, please see: Microsoft SMB Community Blog : Regardless of what any hack says, a Windows 7 Upgrade is an Upgrade. What you need to know.

Upgrade Or Full Version To Install Win 7 64-bit From Vista 32-bit
I have Windows Vista 32-bit. Would I be able to install Windows 7 64-bit with an UPGRADE disk or would I have to use a "FULL VERSION" disk? The question answered on the Windows 7 page doesn't seem to answer this, or at least clearly. Yes, I know I have to do a custom install.

Use Win 7 Ultimate Upgrade Version DVD To Upgrade WinXP Professional X64 Computer
Can I use Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade version DVDs to upgrade my Windows XP Professional x64 computers?WindowsMarketplace.com says:Microsoft designed Windows 7 Upgrade media for Windows Vista. Customers with Windows XP can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions but must back up their files, clean install, and then reinstall their applications.

So if I have to back up my files, clean install, and then reinstall my applications, then what's different from a full install? And what are the differences between Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade versions and Windows 7 Ultimate Full versions then?

Reinstalling An Upgrade Version Of Win 7
I'm quite keen on purchasing an Upgrade version of Windows 7. I understand that the installation process first verifies whether I have a legit version of Vista/XP before it commits to installing Windows 7. Therefore, I have 2 questions relating to this:

1) Will my copy of Vista be deactivated after the upgrade to Windows 7?

2) Is it possible to perform a re-installation of Windows 7 in the future?

I'm particularly concerned about Question 2 because the re-installation means I won't have a copy of Vista/XP installed -- and my Vista serial key may be deactivated so I won't be able to install Vista as a prerequisite to Windows 7.

I've searched online for answers already but most of the results were written during the Windows 7 beta phase and may now be outdated. Some of the answers were also contradictory or very vague so I thought it best to ask the questions afresh.

Install / Run XP Version Of QUICKBOOKS IN WIN 7
I am afraid to upgrade my XP Home self-built PC to Win7 Pro 64 because I need XP to run XP software/programs- especially Intuit's QuickBooks, because I don't want to pay for an S/W upgrade. My questions are-1. Will Win7 running in XP Mode install/run QuickBooks that was built/tested for XP?2. Does XP Mode have the same screen resolution restrictions that Vista does with Virtual Machine?3. What's the difference between System-builder(SB) & OEM? 4. Where can I purchase this through MS Store?

Putting Win 7 Upgrade Version On New System Build
I just got my computer up and running today. My next step is to install win 7 on it. So i got win 7 pro 64 bit through digital river with a sweet student discount and also a back up disc that came in the mail. I have noticed that it says upgrade on it though. I have been hearing and being told so many different things that i can not tell what is true.

Please only post an answer if you are certain it is correct

Thank you and with that being said here are my questions

Questions:

Could someone please explain to me what i am exactly supposed to do with the backup disc?
Can i use this on a new computer, ie one without any os on it already?

A friend referred me to this site. It sounds very confusing and i am not very tech savvy when it comes to things like this. Will i need to install it onto a different computer in order to do this boot-able upgrade? does the back up disc come into play? Could someone please explain the instructions in a very simplistic way.

http://www.notebooks.com/2009/10/22/how-to-make-the-student-discounted-windows-7-upgrade-bootable/

Any other ideas or solutions to getting win7 upgrade version onto a new system build?

Installing Win 7 64bit Pro Upgrade Version From 7100
which was upgraded from legal OEM Vista 64bit ultimate. I want to do a clean install but I don't want to format then re-install Vista64..again..just to get to my final destination. is this possible? or would it just be better to take the extra time and put a clean copy of Vista 64 on then run the upgrade?also , will either way net me a VERY clean install of Win 7 upgrade? or is one way better then the other? I am fully prepared (with backups of data waiting) to do as clean and fresh of an install as I can get.

Vaio With Win 7 RC Build 7100 Upgrade To Release Version
I bought a Sony Vaio laptop with Vista and a promised upgrade to Windows 7 when officially released. To jump start, I installed Windows 7 RC Build 7100 from Microsoft over the shipped Vista OS.

I just received the promised Windows 7 upgrade fulfillment from Sony but when I try to install it it tells me that Windows 7 is already installed (duh.)

Is the RC based Windows 7 installation that I've built up over the last few months now junk bits or is there a way to use the serial number on the proof of license sticker on the fulfillment install disk Sony sent me and associate it with my current RC installation to make it legal and avoid any future trouble?

I'd ask Sony but they haven't responded to anything else I've asked about so I'm not sure there are any actual people left in their "service" arm.

Can Win 7 Home Premium Full Version Be Used To Do An In-place Upgrade?
Can Windows 7 Home Premium full version be used to do an in-place upgrade?

I have a new PC with Vista Home Premium that gives me a free upgrade to Windows 7 (but it will still cost 20 euros for p&p). Vista is pre-loaded and the recovery files are on a separate partition on one drive. Worse case scenario is the hard drive dies. I will need the full version of Windows 7 to do a clean install on a new hard drive, but at the moment I would just like to upgrade.

All things considered, I'm thinking of buying the full version while it's half price but need to know if I can use that to just do an upgrade. Is that possible?

Upgrade From Win XP / Vista To Win7: Product Key Language Version
We currently run 3 PCs at home (all 32 bit):

PC 1: German Windows Vista Home Premium
PC 2 & 3: English Windows XP Home

I'd like to purchase the Windows 7 family pack (English) to upgrade all of the PCs (clean install preferred).

Questions:

1. Can all 3 PCs be upgraded to the English version of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with the family pack, despite the different language versions?

2. When performing a clean install, is it sufficient to enter the product key of the previously installed system when using the upgrade disk/key or is the old system required on the harddisk?

3. Just to confirm: The family pack comes with both, the 32 bit and 64 bit version for Windows 7 Home Premium?

Vista's Version Of Movie Maker Is Deleted When You Upgrade To The Win 7 RC
I cannot find Vista's version of Windows Movie Maker now that I upgraded from Vista to the Windows 7 RC, so I assume it was deleted in the process even though it is compatible from what I understand. Windows Live Movie Maker Beta remained, but this is a very basic editor right now as it currently doesn't allow splicing, doesn't allow editing of audio tracks, and has very limited output choices (two).

Upgrade Media - Clean Install From Installed Win 7 Upgrade ?
I did an in place upgrade of Windows 7 home premium and I am thinking about trying to do a clean install since the start up time after the upgrade is brutal (about 10 minutes). My question: I know you can do a clean install using a custom install but do I have to re-install vista first or can I just boot up to my working Win 7 install, put the disk in and do a custom install?

Clean Install Using Upgrade Version
Having followed the numerous threads carefully, confusion occurs with CLEAN install. There is a subtle, but important difference between a CLEAN install that is done as part of an upgrade to XP and one that is RETAIL clean  install. An UPGRADE, run from within XP (whether that is OEM or Full retail) has to be checked that it is validated XP before the Win 7 installation will run.

The Win 7 will then install by reformatting the disc/partition containing XP, ie.. it's a CLEAN install onto a re-formatted drive/partition. If you purchase a RETAIL version of Win 7, then that will do a CLEAN install by BOOTING from the CD/DVD, it will install on a PC that doesn't have ANY previous OS, so it clearly can't be run from within one.

That's also a CLEAN install, but the 2 are very different.I was searching this issue because at our Computer Club we have 16 machines with all sorts of variations in OS's. We want to create Dual Boot with existing retail XP one one partition and retail Win 7 on another. My understanding is that procedure is perfectly possible.

Can You Do A Clean Install Using A Upgrade Version Of 7 ?
My question is Can You Do A Custom Clean Install Using A Upgrade Version of Windows 7? I already have a valid OS installed on the hard drive. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium right now. I am wondering if I can do a custom clean install of Windows 7 from an upgrade disk of Windows 7 Home Premium? I don't want to upgrade because I am afraid I won't get the best performance and I want to have a 'fresh new OS'. It is cheaper to buy the upgrade then the full.

Install Upgrade Version On Clean, New Drive
I have a dead computer, it was a p4 winXP box 6+ years old. I will be assembling a new computer with 64 bit processor and SSD boot drive. I have a full XP license. I would prefer to buy an 'upgrade' version of Windows 7, but will I be able to install an upgrade version of windows 7 on a clean, blank drive? I would strongly prefer not to have to install XP and activate it just to reinstall windows 7. The additional factor is that some people have posted in forums that an 'upgrade' from a 32 bit os to 64 bit windows 7 does not work.

I would prefer to hear from someone who has actually done it and succeeded or failed, not 'it should work' or 'it should not work', because I can find people posting both ways theorizing that it should or should not.

Does The Win 7 Upgrade Install Over Xp Only After You Format ?
the half off upgrade sounds good but you need to clear up the wording of upgrading from xp. does the win 7 upgrade install over xp only after you format. then do a clean install of xp then install the  win 7 upgrade ? that sounds like a government job. real real lame.  the way it is made to sound is do a clean install of win 7 with the upgrade after  but thar would be a fresh install...

not a upgrade - Microsoft designed Windows 7 Upgrade media for Windows Vista. A customer with Windows XP can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade media but must back up their files, clean install, and then reinstall their applications.
