UPGRADE Version: Can You A Do A 'clean' Install
With VISTA, you could not install a fresh copy, you needed to upgrade your existing OS. (unlike XP, 2000, etc.)
Did this change with 7? Can you do a clean install from an upgrade 7 DVD?

Clean Install Using Upgrade Version
Having followed the numerous threads carefully, confusion occurs with CLEAN install. There is a subtle, but important difference between a CLEAN install that is done as part of an upgrade to XP and one that is RETAIL clean  install. An UPGRADE, run from within XP (whether that is OEM or Full retail) has to be checked that it is validated XP before the Win 7 installation will run. The Win 7 will then install by reformatting the disc/partition containing XP, ie.. it's a CLEAN install onto a re-formatted drive/partition. If you purchase a RETAIL version of Win 7, then that will do a CLEAN install by BOOTING from the CD/DVD, it will install on a PC that doesn't have ANY previous OS, so it clearly can't be run from within one. That's also a CLEAN install, but the 2 are very different.I was searching this issue because at our Computer Club we have 16 machines with all sorts of variations in OS's. We want to create Dual Boot with existing retail XP one one partition and retail Win 7 on another. My understanding is that procedure is perfectly possible.

Can You Do A Clean Install Using A Upgrade Version Of 7 ?
My question is Can You Do A Custom Clean Install Using A Upgrade Version of Windows 7? I already have a valid OS installed on the hard drive. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium right now. I am wondering if I can do a custom clean install of Windows 7 from an upgrade disk of Windows 7 Home Premium? I don't want to upgrade because I am afraid I won't get the best performance and I want to have a 'fresh new OS'. It is cheaper to buy the upgrade then the full.

Install Upgrade Version On Clean, New Drive
I have a dead computer, it was a p4 winXP box 6+ years old. I will be assembling a new computer with 64 bit processor and SSD boot drive. I have a full XP license. I would prefer to buy an 'upgrade' version of Windows 7, but will I be able to install an upgrade version of windows 7 on a clean, blank drive? I would strongly prefer not to have to install XP and activate it just to reinstall windows 7. The additional factor is that some people have posted in forums that an 'upgrade' from a 32 bit os to 64 bit windows 7 does not work. I would prefer to hear from someone who has actually done it and succeeded or failed, not 'it should work' or 'it should not work', because I can find people posting both ways theorizing that it should or should not.

Clean Install With A Upgrade Win 7 Version
Just to let you all know that I have confirmed that you can do either a clean install, custom install, or upgrade install with a retail Upgrade version of Windows 7 and activate it on a clean unallocated (blank) drive or partition without any other OS installed or with one installed. It does not matter. WARNING Â Remember that you need a valid qualifying previous version of Windows to use a Upgrade Windows 7 copy legally. Microsoft only made doing a clean install from a upgrade Windows 7 possible to make it more convenient so you do not have to reinstall both the old Windows version (ex: Vista) and upgrade to Windows 7 everytime you needed or wanted to reinstall. If you do not have a valid qualifying previous version of Windows, then you are violating the terms of Microsoft's Windows 7 End User License Agreement and could get your product key number invalidated by Microsoft. Plus, it is considered illegal. For more about this, please see: Microsoft SMB Community Blog : Regardless of what any hack says, a Windows 7 Upgrade is an Upgrade. What you need to know.

Win 7 Clean Install Won't Detect SATA Drive
I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my desktop that is currently running Vista and XP on a dual boot. I want to eliminate the dual boot and do a clean install with Windows 7. I have a Western Digital SATA drive WD2500KS. If I try to install "custom" it will not detect the drive and wants to load drivers. If I try to upgrade it shows the drive and both partitions and want's to know which partition. I ran the Windows 7 compatibility program and it shows the drive and no issues pertaining to installation. How do I get a clean install to recognize the hard drive? Processor is Intel Core2 Quad CPU 2.4 Ghz.

Vista's Version Of Movie Maker Is Deleted When You Upgrade To The Win 7 RC
I cannot find Vista's version of Windows Movie Maker now that I upgraded from Vista to the Windows 7 RC, so I assume it was deleted in the process even though it is compatible from what I understand. Windows Live Movie Maker Beta remained, but this is a very basic editor right now as it currently doesn't allow splicing, doesn't allow editing of audio tracks, and has very limited output choices (two).

Can't Do An Upgrade Install - Different Language
I'd like to do an upgrade install of Windows 7 Beta. Unfortunately, my current OS (Vista Ultimate 64) is in Italian, thus I cannot upgrade. I even tried to install the English language pack and I made sure to set the language in English. The problem is I cannot uninstall the Italian language as Windows tells me that it's the system language. Is there any way to make Windows think that English is the default language of my computer? I really don't want to make a clean install.

Explorer: Changing Default Path From 'Libary' To 'Computer'
I even tried replacing the quick launch icon with the Windows Explorer Desktop icon. It still thinks I need to use the libary. When I use programs like Mp3tag when I return to the menu after editing an album, I have to change the path back to the drive where I am working. Is there a way to change the default folder view from 'Library' to 'Computer' ?

No 'explorer' After In-place Upgrade (to Win7) From Vista Ultimate (both 64-bit)
After installing Windows 7 on a well-working VISTA Ultimate 64-bit machine with Window 7's 64-bit upgrade, a couple of hours later all seemed well - UNTIL ...The Welcome screen (normal - and in high resolution) 2550 x 1600 - then a black screen with only "Windows 7<new line> Evaluation copy, Build 7100".Never any progress after this - explorer won't load (or exits right after it loads).Ctrl-Alt-Delete brings up Windows Task Manager, and you can run virtually anything by selecting "New Task" and browsing to the appropriate executable. Office 2007, Outlook, the Internet, etc. can all be run without problem using this method. There are NO icons anywhere - no task bar - no start button - NOTHING. Have tried countless times. I cannot get to Windows Update (because there is NO start button).I DO get explorer to run in "Safe Mode" - but can't get resolution high.I did dual boot VISTA Ultimate and Windows 7 for several months. It was only when I delete the previous beta and tried to install Windows 7 that all "H" broke loose. I tried upgrading the video drivers (from ATI for 4890) and those installed OK - but can't get to the control panel for those either.I've tried everything. Explorer (NOT INTERNET EXPLORER) will not run in 'normal mode.'I don't want to do a complete reinstall on a 'clean' HD unless I have to. I can access all my data now using the Task Manager - but I have so many programs installed it would take days and days to redo everything from scratch.Any suggestions?

After Nvidia Driver Install, Get 'windows Not Genuine'
i was trying to get drivers for my printer. After restart, screen went black. I restarted in safe mode with netwking to find out what to do. So I eventually found out my graphics card had no driver; it had a generic vga adapter. So I search for my graphics card to find it is an Nvidia GeForce fx 5200 and I get the drivers for it. I restart in normal mode: no success. restart in safe' with net' . starts and am notified that drivers have installed. Now on next restart in normal mode, application error 0xc150002...press ok. Then i get a message in the bottom right hand corner that says 'windows is not genuine build 7600'. I have seen how to change it with/without cmd, but either requires normal mode. So how do I re enter my product key?

Installation Restart Loop After ' Upgrade Unsuccessful '
Ok, went to install the beta. First time I chose, upgrade existing windows (vista SP1). It all seems to go fine, gets to the last stage of the install process, reboots one final time, then on the startup it gets past the windows logo, and says 'starting services' etc. etc., but then I get a message that the upgrade was unsuccessful and its restoring my previous version of windows. It says do not restart the computer during this time, but the green progress bar only gets about 3/5 done and the computer reboots itself. Then it does the same exact thing, over and over. I then booted from the install CD again, and this time chose to install a new version of windows on top of the old one (says it will put the old files in windows.old). so it goes through the install operation again, everything seems fine, but when it should finally boot into the new windows, i get a message that there was some problem on startup and that I should restart my system. Except it comes back to the same message no matter how many times I restart.I'm at the point where I'd be willing to just format the drive and try again with a clean install, but I'm wondering if anyone has insight as to what is causing the problem and how I might be able to fix it. Also, before trying the 'new installation' option, I tried the reapir computer option in the install program. That comes up with 2 installations of windows -- Windows 7, and a 'windows rollback setup' or something like that. I tried doing startup repair on both of them -- windows7 one says it repaired it, the rollback one says it couldn't repair it. None of that solves it (obviously). Also, I tried going to command prompt, but that comes up as under the X: drive (which I never had), with various windows looking directories (Program Files, Windows, etc.), but tying to do a 'cd C:' just brings me back to X:.So... any ideas?

Can't Install Matrox Driver After Win 7 Upgrade
I have a Matrox M9120 PCIe x16 graphics card. It was running fine in Vista x64 with the 1.0.3.35 driver. I ran the Windows 7 x64 upgrade, and everything seemed to be OK until I discovered that I couldn't open Windows Media Center or view DVDs or other videos. I tried to upgrade to the latest Matrox driver, which supports Windows 7, but the old driver wouldn't uninstall. I contacted Matrox tech support and was advised that I should have uninstalled the old Matrox driver BEFORE upgrading to Windows 7. They said that Windows 7 has locked in the old driver but cannot recognize it so that it can be uninstalled because it is not a Windows 7 compatible driver. They added that the ONLY solution is to do a clean install of Windows 7. This is outrageous. No such information appears on the Matrox website, and Matrox did not notify me of the terrible consequences of upgrading to Windows 7 without uninstalling the Matrox driver even though I registered the M9120 with them last January and provided my email address. Matrox knows that every customer faces a potential disaster when upgrading to Windows 7 but covers up the mess rather than notifying registered owners of the simple step to take prior to upgrading. I'm not going to do a clean install but will use the Matrox card without the ability to play videos for the time being in the hope that some smart techie will figure out how to uninstall the old Matrox driver from Windows 7. If that doesn't happen, I'll buy some other fanless video card and replace the partially functional Matrox card.

Windows Upgrade Advisor Won't Install
Trying to install Win 7 Upgrade Advisor on a two-year old Vista machine (DELL XPS 420). Clicking the setup icon to install gets me nothing. No installation screens, no warnings, no errors, nothing. I tried installing on an older XP laptop and the software installs there just fine. I've checked the other related topics and they seem to be related to problems installing on XP, not Vista. Any ideas what I'm missing? I've never encountered an installation that fails before it even starts.

Upgrade From Vista, Won't Finish Install
I've tried four times to upgrade my vista 64 bit to windows 7, everytime it gets to about 62% complete it just stays there. I'll leave it running for two days and it just won't finish. I've have over five thousand my lastest build, and it all runs great on Vista 64. The compatibility wizard shows no issue before I start the upgrade. If I boot to the CDrom first with the windows 7, it starts coping the disc and then I get the Friggin BLUE Screen, everytime. I've been building sytems for over fifteen years, I've owned every kind of windows ever made. I've probably paid for Bill Gates car (one of them anyway).I could do a clean install, but I don't want to pay for all the software I've installed again.

Stuck At ' Completing Upgrades ' Of Install
I'm am trying to install Win 7 from a current system that has Vista, and it has been stuck at "Completing Upgrades" for 12+ hours, do I just have to wait for the computer to do its thing, or is there something wrong with my install? Am I basically stuck until it finishes? What is going on at this time of install? What would happen if I was to shut off my computer?

Upgrade Install Fails, Clean Install Is Fine - Same Hardware
When I try to do an upgrade install (from Vista Ultimate SP1 32-bit) it always fails toward the end of "migrating files, settings and programs" at about the 57% mark. The program says that it needs to reboot. The screen goes blank and it looks like it is rebooting, however the PC just sits there, the monitor goes to sleep (no video - either analog or DVI) so there is apparently not even a BIOS screen. There is no drive activity, yet the PC is still powered on. If I power off and on (or use the reset button), Windows 7 starts to load but eventually blue screens with the STOP error 0x0000007B, followed by (0x80598B68, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I know that the first error code usually refers to an inacessible boot disc. After several tries, it lets me boot, but just tells me that the install failed and is rolling back to Vista, which it does (rather well, I must say). However, if I do a "clean" install (whether or not choose to let Windows 7 wipe out the existing Vista partition), the install completes flawlessly.Apparently, Windows 7 is having problems migrating something (perhaps drivers?) from the existing Vista installation, but I don't know what. I've tried uninstalling a few various programs and hardware devices and their associated drives to no avail. Luckily, all of this testing is on a cloned drive, so no permanant damage. The hardware is exactly the same whether I do the upgrade or clean install. Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas.Â

Upgrade Media - Clean Install From Installed Win 7 Upgrade ?
I did an in place upgrade of Windows 7 home premium and I am thinking about trying to do a clean install since the start up time after the upgrade is brutal (about 10 minutes). My question: I know you can do a clean install using a custom install but do I have to re-install vista first or can I just boot up to my working Win 7 install, put the disk in and do a custom install?

Upgrade Allows Clean Install ?
Can you fresh install with an Upgrade version of Windows 7? I want to save some money by buying the Upgrade. However, if I have to install my old OS first then upgrade, that isn't really a clean install. I'm wondering if you simply have to prove you have an older Windows version so that you can upgrade, or if it literally has to be on the PC for it to work. Second, does anyone know if the Upgrade trick works with Win 7? As in, you install the Upgrade without entering a key, then "upgrade" your upgrade?
