Can Win 7 Home Premium Full Version Be Used To Do An In-place Upgrade?

Oct 10, 2009

Can Windows 7 Home Premium full version be used to do an in-place upgrade?

I have a new PC with Vista Home Premium that gives me a free upgrade to Windows 7 (but it will still cost 20 euros for p&p). Vista is pre-loaded and the recovery files are on a separate partition on one drive. Worse case scenario is the hard drive dies. I will need the full version of Windows 7 to do a clean install on a new hard drive, but at the moment I would just like to upgrade.

All things considered, I'm thinking of buying the full version while it's half price but need to know if I can use that to just do an upgrade. Is that possible?

Upgrade Version Vs Clean Install Version?

Sep 1, 2010

I need to know if I can use a clean install disk for Windows 7 Ultimate to upgrade from Vista or if I have to use an Upgrade version?

I'm leaning towards buying the clean install disk so that if I should loose the hard drive at some future point I could just clean install Win 7 Ultimate from the disk without having to first install Vista and then upgrade.

Regardless of which type I purchase, am I better off to buy the OEM disk from the machine manufacturer (Toshiba) or just purchase any OEM disk? Of course, if I want Microsoft support then I need to purchase retail disks.

Clean Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit From Vista Home Premium 64bit?

Feb 28, 2010

I got windows 7 ultimate 32bit free from my school, and decided that I wanted to clean install, and not upgrade it. I transferred all my files off, booted the laptop up with the windows 7 disk, and proceeded to clean install. I didn't have the drivers cd for my laptop, but I just wiped my drive and installed 7 anyway. Now I have windows 7 ultimate 32bit, and can only use 3 of my 4 gigabytes of memory.. The thing I don't really understand is the whole upgrading option, and like, I know that it's a windows 7 32bit dvd, but it doesn't seem right to go from 64bit to 32bit. So is there anyway I can make it 64bit without having to buy a new dvd? And if not, how much am I missing out on, with not having 64bit, especially with having 4 gigabytes of ram?

Home Premium X64 OEM Upgrade To Ultimate X64 Full?

I made the mistake of getting an OEM copy of windows 7, meaning I can only install it to one motherboard, however I plan on building a new system and I was wondering whether or not I should get the full version, just so I can transfer the license to another computer in the future. Also, is it possible to upgrade an OEM version to a full version? like windows 7 x64 home premium OEM --> windows 7 x64 Ultimate full version.

UPGRADE Version: Can You A Do A 'clean' Install

Jul 24, 2009

With VISTA, you could not install a fresh copy, you needed to upgrade your existing OS. (unlike XP, 2000, etc.)

Clean Install With A Upgrade Win 7 Version

Oct 22, 2009

Just to let you all know that I have confirmed that you can do either a clean install, custom install, or upgrade install with a retail Upgrade version of Windows 7 and activate it on a clean unallocated (blank) drive or partition without any other OS installed or with one installed. It does not matter.

WARNING

Remember that you need a valid qualifying previous version of Windows to use a Upgrade Windows 7 copy legally. Microsoft only made doing a clean install from a upgrade Windows 7 possible to make it more convenient so you do not have to reinstall both the old Windows version (ex: Vista) and upgrade to Windows 7 everytime you needed or wanted to reinstall.

If you do not have a valid qualifying previous version of Windows, then you are violating the terms of Microsoft's Windows 7 End User License Agreement and could get your product key number invalidated by Microsoft. Plus, it is considered illegal.

For more about this, please see: Microsoft SMB Community Blog : Regardless of what any hack says, a Windows 7 Upgrade is an Upgrade. What you need to know.

Can You Do A Clean Install Using A Upgrade Version Of 7 ?

Dec 9, 2009

My question is Can You Do A Custom Clean Install Using A Upgrade Version of Windows 7? I already have a valid OS installed on the hard drive. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium right now. I am wondering if I can do a custom clean install of Windows 7 from an upgrade disk of Windows 7 Home Premium? I don't want to upgrade because I am afraid I won't get the best performance and I want to have a 'fresh new OS'. It is cheaper to buy the upgrade then the full.

Install Upgrade Version On Clean, New Drive

Feb 5, 2010

I have a dead computer, it was a p4 winXP box 6+ years old. I will be assembling a new computer with 64 bit processor and SSD boot drive. I have a full XP license. I would prefer to buy an 'upgrade' version of Windows 7, but will I be able to install an upgrade version of windows 7 on a clean, blank drive? I would strongly prefer not to have to install XP and activate it just to reinstall windows 7. The additional factor is that some people have posted in forums that an 'upgrade' from a 32 bit os to 64 bit windows 7 does not work.

I would prefer to hear from someone who has actually done it and succeeded or failed, not 'it should work' or 'it should not work', because I can find people posting both ways theorizing that it should or should not.

Windows 7 Home Premium - Cannot Install Full Version Of SQL 2008?

Feb 11, 2011

What the limitation of using Windows 7 Home Premium as a test home web server might be?

- Can I host RDP and remote into the machine?
- Host IIS sites?
- SQL 2008 Express?

Any limits to these products as well? I'm reading sql 2008 Express has a limitation of 1 processor and 4gb per DB. Does this mean I can install it on a quad core, but it will only use one processor? Any reason I can't install the full version of SQL 2008 on Windows 7 home premium?

Possible To Install A 32 Bit Windows 7 Pro Upgrade On Home Premium 64 Bit

Jun 11, 2011

can we install the 32 bit version from the Professional upgrade in place of the 64 bit Home Premium with comes preinstalled? I would do this from the very beginning, so we wouldn't have installed any of our software yet, I don't think there is any bloatware form Dell that we will want. I will make the recovery copies of the 64 bit OS first, and then hopefully upgrade to the 32 bit Professional. Things are "tight", and hopefully will not have to purchase a full version of Professional.

2) when the retail version of windows 7 home premium upgrade comes out, use that to upgrade my RC installation AND KEEP MY INSTALLED PROGRAMS?

i heard you can do a custom install which makes a windows.old folder. i am looking to NOT do that.
