I have a new PC with Vista Home Premium that gives me a free upgrade to Windows 7 (but it will still cost 20 euros for p&p). Vista is pre-loaded and the recovery files are on a separate partition on one drive. Worse case scenario is the hard drive dies. I will need the full version of Windows 7 to do a clean install on a new hard drive, but at the moment I would just like to upgrade.
All things considered, I'm thinking of buying the full version while it's half price but need to know if I can use that to just do an upgrade. Is that possible?
I running Vista home basic 32 bit.
My question is can I do a clean install of Windows 7 home premium using the upgrade version?

View 9 Replies View RelatedIn case anyone is running into issues trying to upgrade Windows 7 Home Premium to Ultimate, I did the following things and got it to work. I ran into the "Can't upgrade. Need clean install" issue, and the "you have a later version" issue.
1. Changed the two registry keys in Hkey Local MachineSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersion Changed Edition ID to "Enterprise".Product Name to "Windows 7 Enterprise"
2. Browsed the Windows 7 Ultimate CD directory, found the Setup.exe file, right mouse clicked it, selected "properties", and told 7 that I wanted to run this file in Vista Version 2.
Then ran setup from Windows 7 Home Premium. You obviously need an upgrade license for this to work, but I had just purchased one.
Home Premium vs Professional or Ultimate. Are the motherboards the same?

View 1 Replies View RelatedBasically what happens is there's a sudden slowdown in computer performance. For example if I'm listening to a live stream, watching a video, or playing a game it will suddenly all go into slow motion for a few seconds and then return to normal speed. I know it's more of a global problem because I can see it happening with other programs, too. When a web page is loading the load speed may suddenly go very slowly for a few seconds, or even if I'm typing in Microsoft Word I'll keep hitting keys, and the keystrokes will be logged, but no words will appear for a few seconds and then it will suddenly have to catch up.
What I've tried to do: A friend suggested my CPU was overloaded, but I checked my CPU usage and it's always quite low, as in below 50% as far as I've ever seen. Someone else suggested defragmenting my hard drive, which I did using TuneUp Utilities, but if anything that made the problem worse, because now in addition to slowing down sometimes things will just stop for a few seconds, or web pages will time out but when I reload them they work fine. My machine: I'm using a Lenovo Ideapad, intel Core i7, 4 GB RAM.
My computer's HDD had died and all data was lost. I gave for fix but windows ultimate was installed instead of home premium and I want to downgrade because its not genuine and I don't have windows installation CD. Is there any possible way of downgrading without clean install and CD?

View 9 Replies View RelatedIf you have installed a preview version of Windows 7 Ultimate (e.g. beta, release candidate build 7100 or RTM build 7600) and want to install a cheaper version of Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional the installation is normally refused.
But with change of a registry key whilst installation you can fake a minor version - so you can install Home Premium or Professional over existing Windows 7 Ultimate.
Why Windows 7 Home Premium ( on my laptop ) is taking up more space than the Ultimate version on my desktop? Both systems are installed, along with the application software, in the C partition of 30 GB with W7HP taking up nearly 4GB more then Ultimate. I have more applications, taking up more space, under Ultimate. Both systems have 2GB RAM, all System Restore points have been deleted, Hibernate is on and I have run both Disk Cleanup (as Administrator) and CCleaner to clear out any junk.
