my brother's friend installed Windows 7 Ultimate on our computer (illegaly against what I wanted) and 2 days later it keeps saying not genuine. So I went out and bought Home Premium and I am wondering if there is anyway to go from Ultimate to Home premium without losing our programs. If I try to upgrade it says you cannot upgrade form Ultimate to Home premium.

I was using a licensed version OS win7 ultimate on my old system. Now after upgrading the system (mobo, processor changed) it prompts me to purchase a new product key. I found that after a major up gradation using the the same product key violates the user end agreement and so I left it there and I purchased a Home premium .( Somebody suggested to convince MS about the up garadation but didn't try it)
Now in the new sys win 7 ultimate sp1 is running and i have to change the product key within 30 days. My query is- Can I downgrade to Home premuim without a clean install?

In case anyone is running into issues trying to upgrade Windows 7 Home Premium to Ultimate, I did the following things and got it to work. I ran into the "Can't upgrade. Need clean install" issue, and the "you have a later version" issue.
1. Changed the two registry keys in Hkey Local MachineSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersion Changed Edition ID to "Enterprise".Product Name to "Windows 7 Enterprise"
2. Browsed the Windows 7 Ultimate CD directory, found the Setup.exe file, right mouse clicked it, selected "properties", and told 7 that I wanted to run this file in Vista Version 2.
Then ran setup from Windows 7 Home Premium. You obviously need an upgrade license for this to work, but I had just purchased one.

I made the mistake of getting an OEM copy of windows 7, meaning I can only install it to one motherboard, however I plan on building a new system and I was wondering whether or not I should get the full version, just so I can transfer the license to another computer in the future. Also, is it possible to upgrade an OEM version to a full version? like windows 7 x64 home premium OEM --> windows 7 x64 Ultimate full version.

My mother has a relatively new Dell notebook, but she did some rather stupid things with it. Nothing that I can't fix with enough time and effort, but I figure that reinstalling from scratch would yield a better result and probably take less time too. Besides, it's never a bad thing to reinstall Windows every few years anyway in my experience. However, here's the problem: my parents never bothered to order/make recovery disks. I do have a Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade disk laying around though (upgrade disks contain the full OS, right?). However, the laptop itself came with Home Premium and as such, the activation key on it is also for HP.So, can I just pop in the Ultimate disk, yet enter the HP code and end up with a regular HP edition? I vaguely remember that entering an Ulltimate code while installing from a Home Premium disk results in a full fat Ultimate, but does it work the other way round?

So my desktop computer had a nasty virus or something on it, and it was originally a 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium (as it came with the computer). To get rid of it, I decided to wipe the whole HDD and install a clean Windows 7 Ultimate. But I noticed that the boot time for computer now is MUCH slower now. Before on the Home Premium it would only hang at the "Welcome" screen for only about 5 seconds, then go straight to the desktop and I would be able to use it within minutes. Total boot time: probably under a minute. Now on Ultimate, it hangs on the "Welcome" screen for about 30 seconds, then takes another 10 seconds before I can do anything. Total boot time: 1.5 or 2 minutes.I've tried disabling some of the startup programs and ran a clean boot, but nothign wouthe boot time as fast as it was before. I know that Ultimate has a lot more features, does that explain the extra boot time?

If you have installed a preview version of Windows 7 Ultimate (e.g. beta, release candidate build 7100 or RTM build 7600) and want to install a cheaper version of Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional the installation is normally refused.
But with change of a registry key whilst installation you can fake a minor version - so you can install Home Premium or Professional over existing Windows 7 Ultimate.

Why Windows 7 Home Premium ( on my laptop ) is taking up more space than the Ultimate version on my desktop? Both systems are installed, along with the application software, in the C partition of 30 GB with W7HP taking up nearly 4GB more then Ultimate. I have more applications, taking up more space, under Ultimate. Both systems have 2GB RAM, all System Restore points have been deleted, Hibernate is on and I have run both Disk Cleanup (as Administrator) and CCleaner to clear out any junk.

I got windows 7 ultimate 32bit free from my school, and decided that I wanted to clean install, and not upgrade it. I transferred all my files off, booted the laptop up with the windows 7 disk, and proceeded to clean install. I didn't have the drivers cd for my laptop, but I just wiped my drive and installed 7 anyway. Now I have windows 7 ultimate 32bit, and can only use 3 of my 4 gigabytes of memory.. The thing I don't really understand is the whole upgrading option, and like, I know that it's a windows 7 32bit dvd, but it doesn't seem right to go from 64bit to 32bit. So is there anyway I can make it 64bit without having to buy a new dvd? And if not, how much am I missing out on, with not having 64bit, especially with having 4 gigabytes of ram?
