Use Laptop To Backup Desktop?
Apr 4, 2012
I have a desktop where my main files are located and a laptop which I do not use a lot.
Is there any easy way I can backup/image my desktop to my laptop? I would like to have a copy on my laptop in case my desktop fails.
Could I use Macrium Reflect or a similar program to do this?

I just got two new harddrives for my birthday - one for my desktop, and one for my laptop. The desktop drive is 3 TB, which Windows won't let me use the entirety of...this is sort of a separate issue and not what brings me here, because I figure I can get around this by using another drive for the operating system and just use the 3 TB drive for storage. The drive I want to do this with is the 250 GB drive currently in my laptop, which will be replaced with the other new drive I got for it, 500 GB.
My plan is to make a backup of all the data on my 250 GB laptop drive to the 3 TB (backing up from my laptop to my desktop, connected by the homegroup). Then I'll put the 500 GB into my laptop, copy everything back to it, and use the 250 GB as the second drive in my desktop. *deep breath* it's tedious, but the best solution I came up with to make the migration possible.

I'm installing and configuring truecrypt on windows 7 home premium. Truecrypt as you know is use for maintain secure the data for the user so i implemented truecrypt in the partition D. I have installed windows 7 in the drive C. I moved the folder desktop, documents, pictures and downloads of windows 7 to this drive D that belongs now to truecrypt. My problem comes when i restart the system i can not keep the taskbar with my shortcuts of chrome, thunderbird and others programs. I found out ins this forum some tools to restore and backup the taskbar but it doesn't work well because at the end i see the shortcuts but it doesn't work any one of them.

first off let me say I am not 100% sure where to post this in the first place but I thought here is at least a start. My wife rendered her laptop without a working screen a little while ago which I replaced. But her HDD now will not boot or even read on a all in one HDD reading device. So i cannot access the info on it. I was dumb and did NOT make a image/backup of the drive. Warranty is out. I have a brand new HDD (same make and model) but do NOT have a legal copy of Windows 7 (business I think was on it). I am somewhat at a loss as what to do.My buddy suggested 'getting' a copy of Windows 7 and the using a CD key changer to make it match the one on the back of the laptop but I was hoping there was something to do more on the legal side of things and still not pay any more money. It is not a very expensive laptop and I have already almost doubled its cost replacing this stuff.

I created an image using the Microsoft Backup and Restore tool in Windows 7. I saved the image on a network shared folder.I then went to the Advanced Recovery Methods in Windows to restore my image...that I just created. It restarts the computer and goes into recovery mode, I point to where the image is located, I entered the network credentials and it give me an error. "The Specified network resource or device is no longer available. (0x80070037)"

Any simple backup program that is capable of backing up large files incrementally by splitting the file and backing up only changed parts of the file? The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.
Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs. I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

I have a HP laptop and a custom built desktop both running Windows 7. I have both devices networked together and both share files through the Windows 7 Home Group or through my NAS. There are many times when I am on my laptop and want to switch over to my desktop or vice versa. My desktop has multiple displays which got me thinking about extended desktops. Is there any possible way to set up a connection between both computers so that a program or software that is installed on both computers could be dragged from the laptop screen over to my desktop screen?

A failing laptop with Windows 7 installed on the internal HDD A computer with Ubuntu currently installed on the internal HDD (it's free!) An enclosure and USB cable for the laptop hard drive
What I'm trying/want to do:
Put the laptop HDD in the enclosure, connect via USB to the desktop, boot Windows 7 on the desktop from the enclosure and use all the currently installed programs on the laptop HDD with their current settings.
What happens:
With the HDD in the enclosure and connected to the desktop, I power up the desktop. Going straight to the boot menu, I select the new option which is labelled something like "USB-HDD0". "Starting Windows" appears as expected, followed after a bit by the logo, but then the desktop restarts before reaching anything the blue patterned default screen before login options.
Extra info:
When I replace the laptop HDD back into the laptop and boot, everything still works fine. Windows Startup Repair cannot find a problem (big surprise!) If possible I'd like to avoid the hassle of clean installs etc.

I currently have a laptop running Windows 7 Pro 64 and a Desktop running Windows 7 Pro 32. What I would like to do is do a fresh install on both PC's but install the 64bit onto the Desktop and the 32bit onto the Laptop. I know the process is easy enough, but once both are installed properly, would I run into any issue during activation or any other issues? Would there be anything I need to do before hand? (not including backing up files and such).

right, as some of you may know from reading my wall page my laptop was stolen. now prior to this i had made a system image, i've tried restoring that image to my new desktop system but then it wouldn't boot (apparently due to dissimilar hardware). so i've borrowed my parents laptop (same model as mine was) and restored the clone to that. now apparently there's a way to clone a system to new (different) hardware, can anybody offer me some help with this?

I have 3 computers connected via a router. A desktop running windows 7(lan cable), a desktop running XP (lan cable) and a laptop running XP (wireless).
Both XP machines can access the Windows 7 machine and edit/view files. The Windows 7 desktop can access the XP desktop. But the Windows 7 desktop CAN NOT access the XP laptop. I receive the following message.
"Documents is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions.
Not enough server storage is available to process this command"
I have tried a few things including the IRPStackSize regedit that msft goes on about, but I still can’t get it working.

Is it recommended to share a SSD between a laptop and a desktop? Assuming I went back and installed all the nessesary drivers for both, would this cause any problems? Ive heard Windows 7 is pretty stable and efficient when it came to drivers etc installed a long time ago and never having to use a registry fixer/driver cleaner when updating hardware.

I'm running Windows 7 64x Home Premium on a Toshiba Qosmio X505 laptop. I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected.

I have a desktop with W.7. Ultimate - connected to Internet by WIFI - and I have just bought a laptop, which has W.7 Home Premium, to use when away from home.I have just returned and would like to transfer data from the laptop to the desktop. I do not seem to be able to do so.I could obtain a memory stick and transfer via that, but I was wondering if I could obtain a cable (USB) that I could use.I have a second HD inside my tower from my last Computer .- which contains my music collection - and I can access that through the Start button/Computer. I do not have a cable with a USB connection at each end - only an extension USB cable for my reception of WIFI which is an ordinary USB for the computer and a larger size to connect the radio receiver.
