"show Characters" To Rediscover Wireless Password - Is It In XP Too
Nov 18, 2011
I need to rediscover a network ASCII key on my computer. In Windows 7 , you can go into the wireless settings and simply click a box that says "show characters". Then you can see the key in ascii format.
But I am on a WinXP laptop right now. Is there a similar feature in Win XP ?

About 1/3 of the time Japanese characters in filenames, itunes, etc do not show. They show the square boxes. The characters show in the internet browser all of the time. Restarting the computer makes them work again.I can turn off my computer, turn it on the next day, and they will work. Then I can turn it off, turn it on the day after that, and they won't work again. Also, in the volume mixer, applications have the same squares at the end of the word

My computer doesn't show asian characters...including languages like Hindi, Arabic, Chinese(all), Japanese, Korean, Gujarati etc....I have many files in these languages but because of problem it shows only boxes in file names....There is no problem in displaying characters in browsers and word processors...Sometimes it shows all characters correctly but sometimes it doesn't. After reboot it shows them correctly, but not every time.

I'm using Windows 7 64bit Professional. It's configured for English and the System Local for non-Unicode is English (RP Philippines).I've been able to copy and past Chinese characters from Word --> Notepad -->Chrome/Firefox/IE for work (I was localizing a website) with no problems until last night. Today, when I tried to copy-paste a few chinese characters from Word, I was suddenly only seeing square boxes. I know this means that the font or app can't recognize or render the characters. My questions is WHY? and how to Fix it? It frustrates me since it was fine yesterday. I haven't installed anything new or changed any setting that I know of. Other applications still render the characters just fine. In fact, if I copy-paste a Chinese character from word to notepad (making a square), then copy the square from Notepad to Chrome, I get the Chinese character back rendered perfectly.
The only change would be a windows update KB915597 that automatically installed last night. To add insult to injury, whenever I go to Windows Update to look at my optional updates and try to search for the Chinese (simplified) LIP, it's not displayed! Even when I click "restore hidden updates". I've even tried the Windows Update Reset regkey, which deleted my Windows Update history, but the LIP's are still not there.

Very strange issue on HP Elitebook 8440p running Windows 7 Pro - 32bit:
- Domain user logs in successfully after PC powers on
- Goes into Standby mode while still logged in
- Resumes from Standby by pressing the power button
- Gets to the login prompt by pressing Ctl-Alt-Del
- Begins entering password (which begins with an uppercase character), and is only able to enter *two* chars - after which all other keystrokes are ignored.
The only way to login is to force the machine to power cycle.

Windows 7, won't accept a password I set to it for my HP 620, though with a special character; which goes for Kar's1990 --that's the password. Password that used to work flawlessly in weeks I have had it in use though until today after coming back from my morning routine, to boot the system, to find out every time I try to write "'" to complete the password properly, it instead adds another black dot to the input field in which case the form ends like: Kar'as1990 instead.
The keyboard isn't Spanish though configured, to international English, so to give me the special character without a problem. To throw as well, I had some virus attack yesterday; but swept them immediately. Nevertheless, I don't know if that have something to do with the keyboard no properly writing the a with the accent I'm seeking it to input.

I noticed this a few times when I'm logging back onto my computer. If I screw up the password (usually because I push two keys at once sometimes), on the second try and all other tries after that, the computer won't show my password hint. On my dad's laptop, if I screw up the password, on the second try, it will show the password hint

I have searched the net for this problem, but could not find an answer. Here is the description of the issue:When I go to the "Network and Sharing Center", the "Manage Wireless Networks" link does not show up.(normally, it should show up under "Control Panel Home" at the left pane). When I type "Manage Wireless Networks" in the "Search Control Panel", I am able to find it.But, when I click on it, it says "Wireless is not currently enabled."When I click on "Add", it says "Windows cannot detect any wireless networks interfaces".But, the wireless adapter is working fine.As a matter of fact, I am currently connected to the internet via wireless connection. So, this could not be the adapter issue or the modem issue. The reason I am asking for help is that, I want the capability of selecting which wifi connection to use.
Right now, I cannot choose which wifi connection to use and this presents problems when windows pick a non-working wifi (just happened to me this afternoon). When I was running under Mac OS, I was able to pick a working wifi. The question is:How do I get Windows 7 to display the available wifi connections so that I can pick one from the list?I am using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on a Mac Air (via Parallel Destops).

Long time XP user and I just starting using Windows 7 beta. I really like it so far. Except there's a few things I can't figure out.
I'm trying to connect to my own Wifi Network and it has WEP encryption (I know I should use WPA but for now, let's say i'm stuck with WEP), Windows 7 keeps prompting me for a user name, password after I already entire my WEP key. WHY??? XP never asked me for that. I tried the admin password for my router, didn't work. What is with this new "User name, password" requirement?
Please help. It's really frustrating. The only way around it is to manually add network. There must be something I'm doing something wrong.

As the title states, each time I reboot my PC it will not automatically connect to my router unless I manually input the password. When I goto the connection propeties and view the password that`s saved it`s only saved the numeric portion of the wireless password. For example, if my wireless password is love123 upon reboot it only states 123 in the wireless connection properties. I tried going into the wireless and network sharing screen then manage wireless connections and completely removing and reentering the wireless connection/password but the same issue persists.

Every time I start up the computer or restart it, I have to select my connection and enter my security key. I set it up to automatically connect, but every time the computer starts or restarts, the saved wireless connection information is gone and I have to re-enter it every time.

The Slide Show function in Explorer works great if I can control the timing.

just completed a first-time new Windows 7 PC build. Successful installation of Windows 7 Pro on WD 600GB 10000 system drive. Went back and installed 4 additional HDD. (2) WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM and (2) WD Caviar 7200 500GB HDD from XP system that were used for storage.
BIOS sees all HDDs, but are not viewable in Disk Management.
System Specs:
Antec Nine Hundred
ASUS P6X58D-E MOBO
[Code].....
However, only three are visible in Disk Management. Missing (1) WD 500GB (previously used on WinXP system) and (1) new WD 1T.

I successfully installed Windows 7 RC 7100 as a second OS in addition to XP Pro. I never had Vista, so this system is totally new to me. My questions:
- I have a problem with a correct codepage for non-unicode characters in russian language. In XP there was a special setting that allowed to select the proper language to show non-unicode characters under Regional settings. Will russian LIP or MUI solve this ? BTW, whats the difference between them? If I prefer to have english menus, what do I need to get?
- I installed Windows 7 to the separate drive. During installation I had some known problems with my bad memory sticks and had a BSOD. I changed them and Windows 7 was installed successfully. Now I have to change boot sequence in BIOS to switch between XP and Windows 7. Is it a way to edit boot.ini on XP to include Windows 7?
