Switch From Raid 0 To Single Drive With New Operating System?

Feb 13, 2012

We have two disks in raid 0. We want to get rid of them, as they are failing and install a single hard drive with Windows 7. We currently have Vista installed. There are no files I need to copy, just want to start with a fresh operating system. How do I go about this? Can I just remove the old hard drives and replace with the single hard drive and install Windows 7 on it, or is it more complicated than that?

How To Remove Single OS From Dual Boot - Windows 7 And Win Server 2008

Nov 11, 2012

Tried tackling this one single-handedly to begin with and failed.

I have Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 installed as a dual boot, different partitions single HDD.

I want to remove the Windows 7 partition and keep the Win 2008. I do NOT want to lose anything from the Win 2008 partition. Taken from Disk Management.

Disk 3 with 5 partitions
1st - Healthy, Primary partition 73MB. (I thought this was system reserve but its not, leftover space from a previous partition change). It's currently mounted and completely empty.
2nd - Unallocated space 500mb
3rd - Windows 7 OS (Healthy - system, active, primary partition)
4th - Windows 2008 Server OS (Healthy - boot, page file, crash dump, primary partition)
5th - Unallocated space 8mb'ish

I haven't been using Windows 7 for years and want to clean this drives partitions up because it's messy and wasting space. I just need windows server 2008 as it's been used as a server for years and that's all I need it for now.

I want to safely remove the windows 7 installation and merge that partition along with the 1st and unallocated spaces back into a single partition where windows 2008 server resides.

Now I've tried tackling this myself and failed. I stupidly made the windows server 2008 partition as active which killed my boot and took me forever to repair with zero loss fortunately. Sadly it was as simple as using diskpart in a command prompt from win 2008 boot disk to make win 7 partition active again.

So, how do I do this? The boot manager must be on the win 7 partition as removing active killed it. The windows 7 boot (during startup) is long removed, system boots directly to windows 2008.

Dual Screen, Dual DVI GPU Versus 2 Single DVI GPUs

Nov 20, 2012

I am building a new computer and I want to go with a dual screen setup. I was wondering if I should go with a GTX 670 2GB GPU or two Sapphire Radeon 7870s. If not specifically these cards, let me know what you think. Is it better to have a single GPU with dual DVI output or two slightly cheaper GPUs using crossfire?

Remove Vista From Dual Boot System

Jul 6, 2009

I am dual booting Vista and Windows7 RC 7100. They are both on the same Hard Drive on different partitions. I have made the decision to stick with the new OS (Windows7) and give Vista the boot. So I want to get rid of the extra partition and revert to a single OS (Windows7).

I don't want to reformat the whole hard drive and completely re-install the windows7 operating system. I want to remove Vista from the dual boot menu and keep windows7. Then I want to format the Vista Partition. How can I do this and keep my present installation of Windows7 without having to reinstall Windows7?

Dual Boot For XP SP3 X32 And Windows 7 X64 On A Single Pc?

Mar 16, 2011

Can I make a dual boot for XP SP3 x32 and Win7 x64 on a single pc. Both will have their own hdd(primary master probably XP and primary slave Win7 x64 or other way around)...possible?

I'll have that project with an Asus K8V SE Deluxe mobo which is 64bit capable. Haven't tried it on that yet.(Using Win7 x64 on a newer pc).

I saw an old Compaq desktop with only 1.5gb ram with Win7 x32 and it was quite zippy(yeah surprised me really! ). It even had Adobe CS3, Cyberlink video editors(Power Director/Producer, Autocad 2005 in it in addition to Avast IS ver6(no firewall/behavioral shield, Comodo firewall(D+ max settings --sandbox disabled), standard Office 2007, PDFXchange Viewer suite etc..

Owner friend just did an experiment with that old Compaq and when it was finished invited us for a couple of beers and showed what he had done.

So me thinking....I might be able to try making that project but with an x64 capable mobo. Although I have not used x64 on it(even after I ditched it) it was zippy in XP x32 ram maxed out with Norton IS 2009 --with Malwarebytes, Superantispyware Pro/ ACAD 2008 / SAS Jump Statistical software / MathCAD / forgot the rest.

Changing From Multiboot To Single Boot Can't Remove Old HD?

Oct 20, 2011

A while ago I bought some new big 1TB HD's and decided to install windows 7 Ultimate onto one of them. To make the transition from XP to 7 easier for me I decided to do a multiboot so i could switch back to XP if i needed something.Once i had everything the way i wanted it and i was no longer using XP i decided to remove the old HD. Also it was an IDE and it was cluttering up the inside of my computer. Now whenever I unplug the original HD i get a boot disk failure.my guess is that my computer is looking to the C drive for where to boot windows 7 but I dont know how to change it so that it looks to that HD instead.

BSOD With Dual GFX Cards, Fine With Single

Nov 26, 2009

This is a strange one and i'm hoping someone can help me solve this!

I have a work PC with XP on with 2 x Nvidia 7300 GS graphics cards in. The system doesn't have an onboard graphics card and i've only got 2 so i can have dual monitors.

I tried to install Windows 7 Pro (32) on a seperate partition and it kept BSOD (hardware error 000124) on the 2nd reboot before finialising installation. The only way i've found of not making it BSOD (or just go to a black screen then restart) is to pull out one of the graphics cards and run it solo. With this done everything seems to work.

It will also happily boot into Safe Mode with both. I've got the latest NVidia driver from the site and it's been installed but that makes no difference to the issue.

Any ideas or should i just get 2 new gfx cards?

Switching From 'dual Boot' To A Single Partition Windows 7

Jul 28, 2011

I'm trying to install a new hard drive and retire my current one to backup and data storage purposes.

The problem is that I've installed Windows 7 on a hard drive with 2 partitions, an old XP partition (D:) and the new W7 partition (C:). At the moment the disk management screen looks like this:

What I am trying to do is delete the D: partition, and then copy/resize the C: partition including Windows 7 installation to my new hard drive (F:)

If I ignore the new hard drive and just try to migrate to a single partition, I can never get it to boot. I tried using Partition Wizard to set the C: as a primary, active partition, copied over the bootmgr and boot directory, then used bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot to try to make Windows 7 bootable from just the C:, but it didn't work. All I got was "disk read error" whilst the PC was trying to boot off the C: (this is with all other drives disconnected...).

I could try to migrate to a single bootable partition from a 'dual boot' configuration?? I tried this video's advice and did everything as instructed but got the disk read error problem.

Windows 7 Won't Boot - No Operating System Listed / System Partition Not Valid

Oct 19, 2011

Suddenly my Win 7 Home Premium x64 will not boot. The system starts, POSTs then loads the DVD driver, then the screen goes black (not blank but "lit up" black if that makes sense). Then nothing. If I use Hiren's boot cd I can boot up using the "boot from HDD" option fine and Windows operates normally. System restore to a previous configuration made no difference to the original problem. I cannot boot into Safe Mode. F8 just offers me boot order options.

- Running the Windows 7 DVD I find: "No operating system is listed on the Repair Windows option."
- Running Startup Repair finds the following error: "the partition table does not have a valid system partition" which it claims to have repaired, but the error remains and Windows will still not boot.

I followed this advice:
Boot 7 dvd to system recovery options command prompt. Type: Diskpart
list vol (find the vol letter e.g C or partition number e.g. 1 for the system partition )
Sel vol C ( or sel vol 1, obviously use the correct letter or number)
act exi

My system partition was easily identified and listed as healthy so I selected it and made it active. The problem still remains exactly the same. My system is self built just over a year ago, to my knowledge has been running fine, without any hardware issues. I'm prepared to do a clean install if that's what it takes but if there is a way to fix the partition problem without that I'd like to explore it first.

Dual Operating Systems File Corruption?

Sep 13, 2012

I have Win7 on NTFS, Ubuntu 10.04 on EXT4 and a third partition for general data with both operating systems can access. The third, shared partition is in FAT32.I have had this set up for years with no problems. Recently, I have found that files that I use, move, etc on my Ubuntu sometimes become corrupted. It is very occasional but is occurring more regularly. I use many files (obviously) but only a fraction of those appear to suffer with the problems. The files are generally left irrecoverably corrupted. It is only files that are stored on the shared FAT partition that become corrupted. All partitions are on the same drive.

To solve the problem, I reboot into Windows and sometimes CHKDSK does it's thing and sorts it all out. However, when CHKDSK does not run, the files are irrecoverably gone. CHKDSK says there are orphaned files, removes and recovers them. Sometimes, a file which has been deleted on on Ubuntu may then cause CHKDSK to scan, find and remove the file (or more particularly, sets all affected sectors to null). I can't quite place the error. Possibly in a ageing and failing Hard Drive? The Laptop is circa 3 years old-ish. I would say that combining file systems is an invitation for trouble - but genuinely I have never had any problems with it before. Sometimes I access Ubuntu when Windows is suspended which I feel may cause Read/Write collisions at OS level but if that is the case, surely it should prevent me accessing the file, rather than permit it and then treat the sectors as bad?

Migrate Partitions / Data To A Single Disk System

Nov 16, 2012

A little background on my system's configuration. My system was/is configured is a two disk RAID0 with a system partition and two other partition for Windows and programs. I'm wanting to migrate the partitions/data to a single disk system. I created a system image using both the Windows backup software and Novabackup. The problem I'm having is restoring either of those images to a single disk. Is it possible to restore an image from a RAID configuration to a single disk? If so, what am I missing? No matter which image I try to restore from, I either get a fail from Windows or can't be done in so many words from Novabackup. I just want the RAID image on a single disk.
