Can you put 1 copy of windows 7 on 2 computers? I currently have vista and my hard driving is giving a warning that it may fail. I can't find my vista disk, but my hubby does have windows 7 and was wondering if we can just put his on my computer? Or does it only let you do on one computer??

Jan 15, 2012

I have one internal drive with 1 TB. The data there is very important to me , so I bought External removable drive for backup. Now, I want to copy the data from one drive to the second drive but I have to be sure I have a perfect copy of the data. The data is mostly songs movies and documents. I'm using windows 7.

My question is this:

1.If I'll transfer the data through windows 7 by copy and paste, I could be sure i have a perfect copy? 2.There are tools for comparison Between the original data to the data that was copied?

Have Copied Files Named 'Copy Of' Instead Of '- Copy'

Mar 17, 2012

How can I get Windows 7 to name copied files using the scheme "Copy of" (used in Windows XP and earlier) instead of the default scheme "- Copy", whenever a file is copied to the same directory as the original file?In other words, if you copy a file named "Foo.txt" in a directory to the same directory, Windows XP would have named that file "Copy of Foo.txt", but Windows 7 names the file "Foo - Copy.txt". I want the copy to be named "Copy of Foo.txt".There are several reasons why I prefer the XP style file name:

1. It is familiar :-)

2. I have existing files that use the XP style file names, and I want all my file copies to use the same naming scheme. I guess I can do a massive file rename across all my backups, but that would solve only one of my problems.

3. Most of my folders are sorted by name, and using XP style would sort all copies together. On other forums it has been suggested that one can simply sort by date (to get the copies sorted together), but that advice assumes that all copies are created after all other files are created, which is actually not often the case.

4. I often work with long file names, which means that the end of the file name is often obscured, unless I have wide windows (not always possible) and use lots of horizontal scrolling every time I want to select a file. Hovering over a file to get its full name is a cumbersome solution.

5. On other forums some have given the advice to always make copies in subfolders, but I often make copies or copies of copies while I work (it allows me to roll back or to check earlier versions of a file quickly, during my work), and using subfolders would slow me down tremendously (not to mention confuse me).

I know that when TeraCopy is made the copy handler, it renames files in a different way than Windows 7 does, though unfortunately not the way Windows XP did it. Also, if one installs a third-party directory program such as Opus, it asks for a file name every time a copy is made, but I need something that simply names the file correctly immediately.

Networked Computers - Can't Save Files On Networked Computers

Mar 8, 2012

Three Computers on a home network. Desktop in Office (Windows 7) . Wife's Laptop (Windows 7). My laptop ( Vista unfortunately). Norton Security Suite and all three. I have a network setup and a Homegroup established.

Everything was setup and working so that I could share files between all three. My wife was able to open a desktop file make changes and save it back to the desktop computer.

All of that changed. Now we get a message when trying to save the file. "You do not have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission".

I have given the entire "MY Documents" sharing permission to everyone. I have checked everything. I have looked over all kinds of forums and nothing has worked.

I am to the point of doing a complete reinstall of Windows 7 on my Desktop.

Windows 7 Can't See All Domain Computers

Jul 21, 2011

I have a windows 7 pro that is connected to the domain, but it has a lot of issues, it can discover only about 5 machines from about 50.Also no one in the network can access in through LAN although it can join the domain with no problem. I tried lot of things like:

- Rejoin it to the domain.

- Rename PC name before rejoin it to the domain.

- Remove all profiles and create new ones.

- Remove DNS entry and AD computer entry regarding this machine.

I think it is a system problem not a network problem, but i don't wanna reinstall the system as i have a lot of licenses for it and it is hard to reset these licenses again.

Installing Windows 7 To Many Computers?

May 10, 2011

I'm learning about how to install Windows 7 to many computers. But after I read the tutorial, it has to use Windows AIK to do the process, which has a huge installer size (1,7 GB), not suitable for my slow Internet connection to download it.

Is there another way / alternative to install Windows to many computers (let's say 10-15 computers) at once, instead of using WAIK?

Windows 7 Freezes On Three Different Brand New Computers

Aug 18, 2011

Over the past couple of weeks, I have purchased three different computers. Two from HP and one from Dell. All three computers have the same freezing issue, even if there are no programs running. The only programs that have been installed are Quicken 2010, Turbotax 2010, and Microsoft Office 2007. The only other change made was uninstalling Norton AV and installing eset. The computer freezes up and the only way to get it working again is to hit ctrl alt delete to bring up the task manager. If I bring it up, everything starts working again for a short time. All three computers freeze often even when they have just booted up. All of the computers have been plugged into a power strip which is shared by a bunch of devices, so it's possbile that it could be a power issue, or maybe it's a compatibility issue between Windows 7 and one of the aforementioned programs.

Computers (Windows 7 64-bit) Has Been Randomly Freezing Up

Jun 24, 2012

As of late, one of my computers (Windows 7, 64-bit) has been randomly freezing up. When this happens, I hear a crackle from my speakers, and my USB mouse and keyboard get disconnected (their lights get turned off, so I'm assuming that's the case), and the screen just freezes so it isn't just the mouse/keyboard getting disconnected. This happens on different times - two shortly after startup, one while on a page that uses Flash (I use Chrome, if that's helpful), and one while using a format converter.Going through the event logs, the only event that seems to be related to this is one saying that the computer had been improperly turned off at the time this happened. No other errors that could've caused this could be found. I have a suspicion that it may be an issue with the GPU, since I recently saw a notification saying that my video card's driver recovered from an error, and Photoshop has been crashing as of late due to GPU-related problems.

Installation Of Windows 7 On Dell Computers?

Sep 29, 2012

when I do a clean install of Windows on a Dell computer and want to install drivers, I go to the Dell site and search for drivers using the Service Tag. It will generally come up with 80 or 100 drivers that I need to wade through. There are commonly 4 or 5 wireless drivers, the same # of wired network driver, 2 or 3 audio drivers, 2 or 3 graphics, etc.Is there a quick way to determine what drivers to install?I have gone to http:[url]... and looked up Vendor ID and Device ID but this is rather time consuming. I find that Dell computers are much worse than other vendors in not being able to tell me what hardware drivers are needed.

Keeping Two Windows 7 Computers Synced Up?

Sep 12, 2011

I make my entire living on a computer but am not an IT person and really don't know enough about PC's. I recently fought with a computer to clean it up then finally reinstalled Windows 7. I am wondering of keeping two computers for business make sense. I use the same laptop in two locations at home. I do most of my work at a desk with a docking station and two monitors, I use it like a desktop at my main desk. When I fill orders I carry the computer and use it alone in a room I call my clean room. I do sometimes take the computer other places to work. I am thinking about getting two more docking stations and two more identical computers.

Two for work and one for non-work related activities. If I had a second computer that was maybe a week behind on being synched up I would have had no problems. Is there a easy way to keep to identical laptops synched up maybe 1 week apart from each other? I think it would make life much easier for me as I would have less downtime even with things on an external hard drive. I guess what I want to do is have two computers set up identically but synched up weekly as well as an external hard drive also synched up weekly.

I could keep one computer at my main desk, one in my clean room to process orders and if anything goes wrong the second computer could move back and forth until I am up and running again. I am thinking my non-work computer could be the same so I can also use the docking stations. Is this a good strategy to avoid downtime? Is synching up laptops a fast and easy thing to do? Will the synch up go both directions? I am worried about the both direction things. Lets say I put something on one computer and then later put something on the other computer and synch them up?

Windows 7 Computer Can't See Other Networked Computers?

Jan 1, 2011

My Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine recently stopped being able to communicate with any other machines on the network. It can ping them by name, but can't browse to any shared folders or use any shared services.I do have one networked printer, but access was via http so it seems to work. The big problem is that I have some Windows XP machines that have shared folders and shared printers and I can not access them. Here are the details of my setup.

- Linksys WRT54G router drives the internet (updated to latest firmware)

- Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine plugged directly into WRT54G ethernet port

- Epson Workforce printer plugged into ethernet port

- 2 Windows XP machines connected via wireless

- 1 Windows 7 32-bit laptop connected via wireless

Since the Epson worked fine I thought may it is a wireless issue or maybe an issue connecting from Windows 7 to Windows XP.I went through hundreds of forum posts about people with issues connecting to XP with no luck (i.e. network discovery is on, file/print sharing is enabled, all machines on the same Workgroup, etc.).All of the various XP machines can see each other, ping each other, and browse each other's shared folders. In fact, all of said machines are capable of browsing the Windows 7 64-bit machine's shared folders, but it can't browse theirs.

From the Windows 7 machine I can ping all of the others by IP or even by hostname, but if I put "\hostname" in the run dialog, it can't make a connection. In the Network & Sharing Center I do see the other Windows 7 32-bit laptop in the network map, but I can't browse to it's shared folders.I can RDP this laptop by connecting to the IP address with remote desktop.I can ping the XP machines by IP or name, but they do not show up at all in the network map and I can't browse to them from the run dialog.A few months ago I could never access these machines by "\hostname" but if I put in "\IP_ADDRESS" it would pop up a username/password box and I could get in.This is now no longer working either.I've tried numerous things and from the firewall/network settings it seems like everything is set up to be able to discover other machines, but it still won't work. Something changed on my Windows 7 machine that has locked it from doing any outgoing connections.

Cannot Ping Windows 7 From Other Connected Computers

Apr 23, 2011

I have setup a test LAN with 4 computers, 3 running different versions of Ubuntu and one running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. Until three days ago I did not have a problem pinging between any of the computers. My project is build one of the Ubuntu boxes to be the gateway/router/firewall/VPN server for the LAN. On Thursday I suddenly could not ping the Win 7 box from any of the Ubuntu boxes. The Win 7 box can ping any of the Ubuntu boxes. But what is even worse, I no longer am able to connect via Putty from the Win 7 box to any of the Ubuntu boxes.

I have disconnected the LAN from internet access and turned off the firewall on each of the boxes. I have checked all network settings. I have searched the internet for an answer. All without success. The only clue I have to the cause of the problem is that on Wednesday night Windows 7 performed an automatic update. In my focus on building the gateway/router/firewall/VPN server I failed to do two critical things on the Win 7 box. Turn off automatic updates and create recovery points. How I can correct the ping and Putty problems short of reinstalling Win 7?

Transferring Files Between Two Windows 7 Computers.

Oct 2, 2011

In a nutshell what i am wanting to accomplish is to be able to log onto my desktop PC and access files that are on my laptop. Transferring large files takes a long time when you have to copy it to an external HDD and then back again onto another PC so i am hoping that if i get this working it will solve my problem.I have tried multiple things like Homegroups and setting the sharing permissions on files to allow me to access them but neither of these options work, i even followed the guide for the later attempt that is posted in a thread further down on this forum. When it comes to the homegroup i set up the homegroup on my laptop (by following a guide someone wrote on this forum) but when i go to access the hoemgroup on my desktop it does not say that there is a homegroup already on the network to access, and yes both computers are on the same wireless network. When it comes to the sharing permissions i follow the PDF also found on this forum to the letter but when it comes to going onto my desktop, opening the network screen my laptop is just not there.
