Is Windows 7 Retail Copy Really For Up To 3 Computers
Oct 18, 2011
I was thinking, maybe it's up to 3 installs no matter what computer, however, I have done more than 3 installs on my same computer with no problems with the product key. I have read that it's good for up to 3 computers, not 3 installs.

I am wondering what the process is to switch computers with a retail version of Windows.
Say you have Windows 7 installed on one computer and need to do a clean install on a different one. How do you "de-activate" one to make the new install activate? I don't understand how this works. I will have to do it in the next few days with Vista and will need to do it with Windows 7 this winter.
I assume you would just install on the new computer and have to call MS but I'm hoping it's easier than this.

I am currently planning on upgrading one of my PC's that has a genuine retail version of 64-bit Win7 Home Premium installed.
I am planning on replacing my ageing (E5200/P35/DDR2/HDD) hardware with fresh stuff (Core i3 530/H55/DDR3/SSD).
The way I understand it is that if I were to just replace my MOBO and CPU I could just plug my old hard drive into the new mobo and use the windows disc to repair any problems it may have. However, I am planning on upgrading to an SSD as well.
My question is this, if I make a bare metal backup of Win7 off my current hard drive onto the SSD using something like Clonezilla, and then boot off the SSD once my new system is built, will there be any issues that the Win7 disc won't solve? I don't want to get all this new kit just to find I need a new OS as well.
Anyway, I hope that makes sense.
EDIT: I should add that I currently have 3 hard drives but I only have my OS on my primary hard drive so backing up my music etc isn't an issue. The SSD I'm getting is 64GB so should be fine for Win7 Install.

can i somehow use my vista disc at some point to allow the Windows 7 retail install to upgrade the Windows 7 RC AND NOT HAVE TO REINSTALL MY PROGRAMS?
i currently have vista 32 bit home premium. i have the install discs for it too.
i want to create another partition and put Windows 7 RC 64 bit on it (dual boot).
i have Windows 7 home premium pre ordered.
i want to upgrade Windows 7 RC to the retail when it comes out, WITHOUT REINSTALLING MY PROGRAMS.
i read the Windows 7 retail discs will allow you to upgrade the Windows 7 RC, but you will have to reinstall programs.
i am wondering if using the vista disc will allow me to upgrade and keep my programs.

I was looking at getting windows 7 and hoping to do clean installs on a couple of machines and don't know which version to choose. I was looking at the w7 professional upgrade because I read that you can do a clean install with the upgrade disc and it's cheaper but I was not sure because I have an xp pro upgrade disc which says in the manual you can do a clean install but I could not (tried to put it on my laptop and do a clean install over vista but wouldn't let me.)
If you can do that, what is the difference between an upgrade clean install and the regular install disc? My other question is, if I buy the full retail version how many machines can I install it on and will they go into non genuine mode after the product key is used once?

I have one internal drive with 1 TB. The data there is very important to me , so I bought External removable drive for backup. Now, I want to copy the data from one drive to the second drive but I have to be sure I have a perfect copy of the data. The data is mostly songs movies and documents. I'm using windows 7.
My question is this:
1.If I'll transfer the data through windows 7 by copy and paste, I could be sure i have a perfect copy? 2.There are tools for comparison Between the original data to the data that was copied?

Today I have replaced an AM3 motherboard with an AM3+ and I got the usual message 3 days to activate.
I've tried to activate today using the automated phone line and it says my software is not genuine and then automated phone lady says bye bye. There was no "How many Computers is your software installed on, and no waiting to speak to an agent. JUST BYE BYE.
I've tried customer support typed in Product ID, It tells me my licence has expired. Windows 7 home premium I purchased Full version from PC World back in 2009 then a few months later I purchased the anytime upgrade to Professional.
If I retype in product key for Professional it takes me back to the activation screens 4 options. Ive also tried typing my home premium key that does not work, it says I need a Professional licence which I have but expired.
I dont really want to repair or reinstall it when it is working and no conflicts. I do have Vista and linux on another hard drive which is not connected because graphics card is blocking SATA ports, and right angled connectors are to high as well.

I'm currently running a Dell Dimension machine which was purchased with Windows XP (OEM) originally installed on it and has since been upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium. Even though the original installation of XP was obviously OEM, when I upgraded to Win 7 did it change to a retail licence key and therefore now allows me to install Win 7 on a new machine that I'm building? The new machine will have components out of the old machine and therefore the old one will not be able to be used, but it will be a different MB, CPU and RAM.

So I just bought Windows 7 Upgrade and there are 3 parts to the Windows 7 download. I downloaded Win7-HP-Retail-en-us-x64 which I think is an install file. But every time I try to run it I get the error message, "The application cannot find one of its required files, possibly because it was unable to create it in the folder. Please make sure that the folder in which this application was downloaded is accessible and not read-only". I threw it onto my desktop, unblocked it from properties, but still it doesn't work

My question is; are Windows 7 RTM retail product keys locked to a particular installation CD, or can they be used with any retail installation CD? (As long as they haven't been used before or are associated with a different edition of course).

After having installed my Windows 8 Pro Upgrade, and regret it, I installed a fresh Windows 7 Ultimate x64 from my retail dvd. When it came to activation, it wrote "unsuccesfull, please use phone activation".I then tried that, and as first I had to answer on how many PCs this key was used. I press 1, and the phone-activating was done normally.
But after a while I got to think, WHY MS had to ask me this? My retail DVD (and the key to it), has not been activated for over 2 years, so maybe another is using my key?

I have a Gateway P 7805U. It came with a single 320GB HD. It came with Vista but I upgraded to 7. I want to install two 1 TB HDs set up as RAID 1. I was told by MS that I would not be able to transfer my OEM Vista to the new HD and that I would have to buy a full version of 7 to install on the new HDs. What is the difference between the system builder and the retail version of 7? Will I be able to to a full install with the system builder?

Some people have indicated that I will need to contact Microsoft but I couldn't determine if they meant the automated phone number used to activate Windows or if was another number?

How can I get Windows 7 to name copied files using the scheme "Copy of" (used in Windows XP and earlier) instead of the default scheme "- Copy", whenever a file is copied to the same directory as the original file?In other words, if you copy a file named "Foo.txt" in a directory to the same directory, Windows XP would have named that file "Copy of Foo.txt", but Windows 7 names the file "Foo - Copy.txt". I want the copy to be named "Copy of Foo.txt".There are several reasons why I prefer the XP style file name:
1. It is familiar :-)
2. I have existing files that use the XP style file names, and I want all my file copies to use the same naming scheme. I guess I can do a massive file rename across all my backups, but that would solve only one of my problems.
3. Most of my folders are sorted by name, and using XP style would sort all copies together. On other forums it has been suggested that one can simply sort by date (to get the copies sorted together), but that advice assumes that all copies are created after all other files are created, which is actually not often the case.
4. I often work with long file names, which means that the end of the file name is often obscured, unless I have wide windows (not always possible) and use lots of horizontal scrolling every time I want to select a file. Hovering over a file to get its full name is a cumbersome solution.
5. On other forums some have given the advice to always make copies in subfolders, but I often make copies or copies of copies while I work (it allows me to roll back or to check earlier versions of a file quickly, during my work), and using subfolders would slow me down tremendously (not to mention confuse me).
I know that when TeraCopy is made the copy handler, it renames files in a different way than Windows 7 does, though unfortunately not the way Windows XP did it. Also, if one installs a third-party directory program such as Opus, it asks for a file name every time a copy is made, but I need something that simply names the file correctly immediately.

Objective: Upgrade to a new build with a new W7 activation while keeping all my user settings and installed files.
Issue: The old build has an OEM license, so I can not directly transfer it to the new motherboard. I need a way to transfer my data, but not the license.
Bonus Question: Can I do a fresh install of the OEM W7 license on the old computer so I can sell it?
