Motherboard/CPU Upgrade With Retail Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Sep 6, 2011

Having read some threads I am under the impression I won't have to purchase another copy of windows but I was wondering what I will have to do in order to continue using the same copy of windows.

Some people have indicated that I will need to contact Microsoft but I couldn't determine if they meant the automated phone number used to activate Windows or if was another number?

Install Win 7 RC As Home Premium And Upgrade To Retail

Jul 17, 2009

is it in any way possible to:

1) install windows 7 RC as the home premium version (not ultimate). i heard you can edit some file to allow this.

2) when the retail version of windows 7 home premium upgrade comes out, use that to upgrade my RC installation AND KEEP MY INSTALLED PROGRAMS?

i heard you can do a custom install which makes a windows.old folder. i am looking to NOT do that.

Re-installing A Retail Copy Of Win 7 Home Premium On New Hardware

Feb 26, 2010

I am currently planning on upgrading one of my PC's that has a genuine retail version of 64-bit Win7 Home Premium installed.

I am planning on replacing my ageing (E5200/P35/DDR2/HDD) hardware with fresh stuff (Core i3 530/H55/DDR3/SSD).

The way I understand it is that if I were to just replace my MOBO and CPU I could just plug my old hard drive into the new mobo and use the windows disc to repair any problems it may have. However, I am planning on upgrading to an SSD as well.

My question is this, if I make a bare metal backup of Win7 off my current hard drive onto the SSD using something like Clonezilla, and then boot off the SSD once my new system is built, will there be any issues that the Win7 disc won't solve? I don't want to get all this new kit just to find I need a new OS as well.

Anyway, I hope that makes sense.

EDIT: I should add that I currently have 3 hard drives but I only have my OS on my primary hard drive so backing up my music etc isn't an issue. The SSD I'm getting is 64GB so should be fine for Win7 Install.

Cant Upgrade From Vista Home Premium To 7 Home Premium

Oct 22, 2009

I successfully bought the upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium N, downloaded and extracted it and now I want to install it.

When I choose UPDATE in the intallation dialog it tells me that I cannot upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium ???

Every website from Windows and other people tells me that it IS possible and even the Windows 7 Update Advisor told me that I should not encounter any problems upgrading.

Has anyone of you yet encountered upgrading problems of compatible Vista/7 versions?

Or any other idea what I can do to solve the problem?!

I know that I can make a clean intall of 7, but this would be a pain..

How To Get Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit To Always Show Same HDD

Sep 15, 2011

I have an issue with HDD letters being changed by the operating system. It is highly bothersome that I cant keep each volume letter unchanged so I can identify each one of my 6 hard drives + the Usb drives. I always keep 2 HDD inside the PC tower plus another 4 inside an external enclosure. Additionally I have an external Sabrent USB-DSC5 Hard Drive adapter with one HDD or Optical drive connected to it and the PC.

Is it possible from Windows 7 to set it in such a way that the drives lettering e.g. C E F G H J K etc etc remain linked to each individual HDD? If Windows does not offer that capability how do I solve this need? Is there any known software I could install that deals with this issue and solves it efficiently?

A few days ago,my laptop was working fine..when suddenly it started to hang up..i tried to logoff but it dosent...i waited for 15 min but it didnt respond...then i force shutdown it..when i restarted it,it showed up with BSOD saying "unmountable_boot-volume"
and then restarts itself again...it came up with "windows has failed to logon" i selected "Startup Repair" it took 2 days continuously repairing it up...but it goes on for "attempting repairs''...finally.i lost my patience and press cancel..it hanged up again..i restarted my PC it again came up with BSOD again mentioned above. When i tried to run startup repair, this time it wont start...Then i tried to load windows in safe mode,no luck,in safe mood with command prompt to run chkdsk, but i wont load..it stuck up at driver.sys... i got an answer to run tools for checking up my hard drive,i downloaded DFT from Hitachi and run it ...but it wont..it stuck up with a cursor blinking and saying "Loading DFT"...i waited for 2 hrs but nothing happens...Then i ran seagate tools..it runs..check for errors ...it came up with answer : Bad Sectors Found..then i ran up advance test to repair bad sectors..it repaired 2 sectors and then : "Repair Failed Bad Sectors Found.."i was just googling up to see if Bad sectors Can be repaired...i found HDD Regenerator..but i dont know if it can really repair Bad Sectors on my hard drive..

1) should i first go for HDD Regenerator to repair Bad Sectors...

2)Should i backup my data....?

if,i should backup my data first..

1)which software would be the best for backing up data...?

2) should i clone my hard disk or create an image of my hard disk?

3)or should i use ubuntu to back up my data...

Possible To Install A 32 Bit Windows 7 Pro Upgrade On Home Premium 64 Bit

Jun 11, 2011

can we install the 32 bit version from the Professional upgrade in place of the 64 bit Home Premium with comes preinstalled? I would do this from the very beginning, so we wouldn't have installed any of our software yet, I don't think there is any bloatware form Dell that we will want. I will make the recovery copies of the 64 bit OS first, and then hopefully upgrade to the 32 bit Professional. Things are "tight", and hopefully will not have to purchase a full version of Professional.

Vista Home Premium 32 Bit Upgrade To Windows 7 X64

Jul 22, 2009

I have a laptop with vista home premium 32 bit.. (OEM)..No install disk But can make one.I was going to install it on pc. I have ordered an upgrade disk for windows 7 x64 professional.. I was wanting to put it on my pc. It is running Windows 7600-16384 at the moment. From what I see it seems I won't be able to upgrade because:

1. Vista home premium to Windows professional won't work.

2. You can't upgrade with windows 7600-16384 to RTM

3. Not sure about going from 32 bit to 64 bit.

I am correct in my thinking??? If so I may have to cancel my upgrade buy from Newegg..Or change it somehow.

Would I be able to do clean install (RTM) on the pc with 7600-16384 on there????

Upgrade From Vista Home Premium To Windows 7 Pro

Dec 7, 2009

I've been researching online that there is ONLY one way of going to from version to version when upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7. For example, Vista Home Premium to 7 Home Premium. You technically (In Microsoft's eyes) can't go from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional. People bought the $30 Student 7 Professional from DR when it was available, and had Vista Home Premium on their laptop.

Mistake? I don't think so. We are also assuming that you have a legitimate copy of Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional Upgrade. We also assume no liability for any damages or data loss this may occur from doing my tutorial..

First off we need things done before we can do the upgrades. (Yes Upgrades).

1. Backup everything you need saved (Make an image with Acronis or any backup program)

2. Have a copy of Windows 7 (Any edition works, I'll tell you why later)

3. Have a quite some time to do this (Upgrades took a total of probably half a day)

Assuming you did the first 3 steps continue....

So you have a DVD copy or image of Windows 7. Extract the image or copy the disc to a folder on the HD of the computer you are upgrading. We are going to be going from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium as this is the only way we can do it (THANKS MICROSOFT).

View the extracted dvd/image on your HD. You will see a Sources folder, and you will see a ei.cfg. This can be edited with Wordpad or notepad, either one will do fine. Read more at the forum...

Windows 7 Upgrade Key Not Valid With Home Premium

Apr 14, 2012

I bought two licenses for Windows 7 Professional Upgrade when the Pre-Release special offer was in place. One I used on my laptop and the other has never been opened. My laptop died and I bought a new one with Windows 7 Home Premium installed. I want to use my upgrade disk but MS Canada Support told me that the upgrade key on my disk is NOT able to upgrade from Home Premium - only Vista. She told me I had to buy ANOTHER upgrade to be able to use it with Home Premium. This is even though the disk and the box say they include Anytime Upgrade It is the key that is wrong.

Upgrade New PC From Windows 7 Home Premium To Professional?

Dec 21, 2011

I bought Windows 7 Professional and installed it on my computer. Recently, that computer died unexpectedly and I bought a new one that came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. Since getting a new computer was unexpected, there were things I needed to get installed right away, so I just started installing it on the version of the OS that was already installed on the new PC. Now that I have a moment to go back and upgrade it to 7 Pro to take advantage of the features I want/need, this is appearing to not be an option, or at least not an easy one. The only options I'm seeing are to do a full reinstall or to do a Windows Anytime Upgrade which requires a separate license key. I have enough software installed now I really don't want to have to reinstall the entire machine again. Plus there were some applications that came for "free" on the new PC that I'd like to keep, but reinstalling would mean that keeping those apps also was not an option. And it seems stupid that I'd have to buy an upgrade when key when I have a full version of what I want to go to. Is my full version DVD of 7 Pro a paper weight now?
