i am trying to backup files and programs to an external hard drive. and a messages comes up saying "one of the USB devices attached to this pc has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it.

my computer is Toshiba satellite L300. It has a problem of not recognizing any devices. At first my usb ports were having power cause the mouse was lighting when i put it on the port, but now nothing is happening.

When my computer booted up with windows 7, everything worked perfectly and had no problems. I turned off my computer for the night and the next morning when i went to turn on my computer, none of my usb 2.0 devices (mouse, wireless adapter, etc.) worked. The only thing that does work is my keyboard and its a PS/2 keyboard.

When I first got the laptop the USB ports didn't recognise devices when they were plugged in, and the laptop would just hang when shutting down (on the Windows Shutting Down screen), so I decided to reinstall the OS as there was a lot of unnecessary applications installed.
I've been using the laptop since the rebuild and all has been good, until the past week or so when the same two problems have materialised again - when I attach a PSP, or a printer via USB, they are not recognised. And when I shut the laptop down, it hangs on the Shutting Down screen.
What checks can I run to see what the cause of this might be? I've not really installed a load of software on here, and I can't think of anything specific that I may have done that would cause this...

View 1 Replies View RelatedThere are several problems with HP Mini netbook. First among them is that programs keep freezing. It seems to start up normally, but shortly after you launch any program (even explorer or the control panel), it hangs. This means among other things that I can't get into Device Manager to look at things like drivers because I can't get there before the freeze sets in. When it happens I can still get to the toolbar and use the start menu and so on, but if I try to launch any other programs, nothing happens. Also I can't force the shutdown of the "hung" programs.
I figured this sounded like a Class A virus situation, so I tried to download some tools like AVG. The Freeze got me, using both IE and Chrome. I tried loading up my USB Thumbdrive (full of troubleshooting tools). The HP won't admit that it even exists, and the access light on the stick never blinks. An external USB HDD available, so I hooked it up. Again, not even rejected, just ignored. The HP will recognize an external DVD drive, but refuses to let me write anything to a black disc. In fact when I try the drive disappears altogether.
dell xps gen 4 running windows 7 (32 Bit)after downloading the latest windows updates, front and back USB ports no longer recognize the USB devices that were plugged in before. The usb device drivers no longer automatically load. usb ports recognize unknown device but device does not function (USB wireless Keyboard/ mouse or external hard drive) I deleted last few updates, re-booted computer and still get same result.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSynopsis: PSU died, replaced PSU with different model, system boots to bios successfully but does not recognize any devices in SATA ports, nor do those devices appear to be getting power. Now can't even get to BIOS, entire PC flicks on and off repeatedly as soon as I turn the PSU on regardless of whether I hit the power button on the front of the computer.

Detailed explanation:About a week ago my PSU (Seasonic 750w) died randomly while the computer was left running in sleep . I RMA'd the dead seasonic. In the mean time I happened to come accross an extremely good deal on a new PSU, so I bought it (Thermaltake smart m850w PSU) to have a backup and to get my machine working again. I hooked up the new PSU to GPUs, CPU, fans, ATX power connector, and to all of the SATA devices, (the SSD, the HDD, and the Optical drive). I made sure to connect the data cables to the SATA devices in the same configuration they were in when working properly. The computer boots successfully to the ASROCK BIOS, all fans spinning. However, I get the error code "A6" on "dr debug" (the led display on the mobo). The manual says this means "SCSI detect". I have no idea what that means.
I was able to load the UEFI, and bios recognized all components except for any of the SATA devices--(SSD, the HDD, and optical drive not recognized). The RAM, GPUs, processor, and fans were detected. At this point I was stuck in BIOS because I couldn't boot off anything.I did not have the HDD connected when the PSU failed, but now the BIOS won't read that either. I don't think any of the SATA devices are actually receiving power. Again, the UEFI showed that there were no SATA devices connected to any port, when in reality they clearly were connected both by power and data cable. Then things get really strange. I unhooked all of the SATA devices except the HDD (the one that wasn't hooked up when the original PSU died). I plug the AC into the PSU, then turn on PSU (not the power switch for the computer, the switch on the PSU). The computer starts flicking on and off in this weird rhythmic pulsating pattern "click...click...click...click..." with about a 1/2 second between each click. Each time the power flicks on, the LEDs come on and the fans spin briefly. The strangest part is that I don't need to hit the power button on the front of the case for this to happen, it just starts as soon as the PSU is turned on. In fact, I can't get the computer to turn on at all--the switch on the front of the computer appears to be dead.
1. Unplug the power cables from everything and re-seated them.
2. Reseated the data cables to the optical drive and the SSD on the drive end, not on the MOBO side as they are covered by my GPUs and I would have to take them out in order to do that.
3. Tried hooking up a SATA power cable from my old modular PSU and using that in the new PSU in an attempt to power the optical drive (didn't work, I know, bad idea--I learned you aren't supposed to do this shortly after I tried it)
4. Setting all preferences to default in the UEFI.
5. Disconnecting the power cables from one or both of the GPUs.
I think that this is either a problem with (1) the motherboard, (2) the new PSU, (3) all 3 SATA devices (unlikely). The fact that I can't even get into Bios anymore tells me that this may be a MOBO or PSU issue.My main question is how to procede from here? I suppose I can wait for my Seasonic to come back from RMA--perhaps that will clear up the issue. I just can't shake the feeling that this is a MOBO issue though. I am worried that if I keep screwing around with it I may end up frying my CPU and GPUs. I can eat the cost of a MOBO or PSU if necessary, but I can't afford to buy a new processor and two new 670s.
I get this error when I try to connect my nokia c3 using an USB cable:
"USB device Not Recognized. One of the Usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows doesn't recognize it".
It works fine for other devices, only for this one gives me this error. I tried to reinstall the drivers again but in vain. I even reinstalled my system and it gives me the same error when I try to connect my nokia c3.

The only printer in my network is on a computer running XP, and my 7 laptop needs to connect to it. How do I do this? I already used my XP computer to set up a workgroup, but I can't figure out how to connect to it on 7.

View 7 Replies View RelatedFrom a fresh start up of the computer, I can get my thumbnails to generate any where on my computer, the NAS, or the USB attached to the NAS. However, after a short period (not specific, can be 5 mins or 30 mins), the USB drive attached to the NAS will no longer generate thumbnails, however, everywhere else still does (ie local files or even NAS files).
I have multiple machines, and it happens on this machine only (brand new only 2 weeks old, fresh windows 7 installed only 2 weeks ago).
I am using Windows 7 64bit Ultimate, but so are the other 2 windows 7 machines, and they do not forget to show thumbnail previews after a little while.
- "Always show icons, never thumbnails" from folder options is UNTICKED. - tried all options from here Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Forums (with everything set to enable thumbnails)
What seems to happen is that it suddenly forgets that thumbnails are enabled, but only for that specific drive. Using the link above, it should always be the first example "EXAMPLE: Thumbnails Enabled in Windows Explorer" but when it decides to stop working it becomes "EXAMPLE: Thumbnails Disabled in Windows Explorer", however, it only effects that one specific USB device attached to my NAS.
It has to be a Windows 7 issue on this machine only, as all my other Windows 7 and XP machines always show thumbnails. As far as I know, all the Windows 7 machines have exactly the same software loaded (I re-formatted them all about 2 weeks ago when the new machine was built).
If I restart the computer all thumbnails are working again until it no longer likes me.
I receive e-mails with jpegs attached. When I click on the attachment, it will not open automatically, I have to open Photoshop first.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm have a "random" crash, that occurs at different times, sometimes when in IE, othertimes in Word, and other times when doing nothing! Or simply don't initialize. Sometimes the computer crashes but maintain the screen, only freezes all. Other times the BSOD comes. When system re-starts, try the "initialization recovery", but nothing. I have installed (formated) the Windows 2 times (last this week) , it's a fresh install, Windows 7 retail and updated to SP1, x64. Drivers are all updated and all devices have their drivers correctly installed. It's a clean system, with Avira (antivirus) and no overclock or something like. Normal use. I used memtest86 for 10 hours and all it's ok.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSwapped out a Belkin N Series router with a newer model (3 of the 4 ports were not working). After doing the install of new router, per there directions, My 2 Dell Laptops Can't connect to the Dell Tower (that has my printer attached to it).
Had no problem seeing the desktop when I clicked on "network" on either my work laptop (running win 7 pro x32 or the wifes running vista sp2 x32 home Premium). But Now neither can see the tower.
Nothing else was changed, all setting were set the same. Thought Dells could talk to each other via RF signals, no need for routers.
We just bought a WD 2TB My Book Elite external hard drive. When we boot the computer into Windows 7 and plug in the USB cable, the drive is recognized and assigned a drive letter. Everything looks normal--we can access the drive, read files on it, copy files to it, etc. However, next time we power up the computer, if this drive is attached, the computer won't boot. The Dell BIOS splash screen comes up and sits there for a while, then the screen goes black--and absolutely nothing else happens. If we then disconnect the drive and start the computer again, it boots normally. The external drive has the latest firmware and software installed, and we have the most current BIOS installed.

I thought it was the graphics card itself, so i exchanged it for a new one - the problem still persists. I also uninstalled all the drivers, and try'd new ones. I even try'd some of there BETA drivers - still nothing.Who crashed says it's a driver issue, so i'm guessing that's what it is. Considering I've run several diagnostic tools to see if my hardware was the issue.

An Ethernet cable runs from the PC in the other room to my router in my room.
Also, when I managed to get it working on Windows Vista previously, my god it was slow performance.
Shall I install the printer drivers on this machine, and if so, how do I set the compatibility mode?

This is a windows 7 x64 AMD CPU, Radeon HD5770, eyefinity triple monitor setup. About two years old system.
AMong 2 monitors, I have 2x Acer X193w connected via DVI, another one is a X2gen connected via display port.
The X2gen monitor usually won't turn on when I wake the computer up, it make the "tip tip tip" clicks for minutes before eventually turned on.
It was fine until about 2 weeks ago, crashed 6 times so far.
For about a week I've been experiencing random BSODs, after about 4 months of stable performance. There are no recent hardware or software changes that I'm aware of. The crashes are truly random, sometimes it will go 2 days without a crash, and then the next day I will get 2 or 3 crashes in an hour. It doesn't seem to correlate with a particular program or device attached. For some reason, my System Restore had been turned off so I have no way of restoring to an earlier point prior before the crashes. I do however backup the system regularly with Acronis Backup, and if I can't solve this I'll have to restore to a prior Acronis backup.Here is my OS info (for full system specs click on My System Specs at bottom left of post):

I am trying to troubleshoot regular BSOD's on my system. They seem to occur during HD video playback (XMBC) or under other system load like downloading large files (from newsgroups) where the speed is fairly high (apx. 2mbps).
I recently replaced my single core CPU for a dual-core thinking it may help, but it didn't. Now, I'm wondering if it could be the memory. I did the windows memory check, and it reported errors, but I don't where to find the log or what to do next.
