Feb 12, 2011I want to reinstall Windows 7 on my machine but I can't have Windows 7 messing with my MBR. If Windows 7 wipes out my MBR I'm going to be reinstalling Fedora 14 also and that is going to ruin my day.

Nov 12, 2009My main consideration in choosing the appearance of my desktop and windows thereon is clarity, ease of reading any text, and distinguishing between windows at a glance, and also keeping performance to a maximum. To this end, having tried various Aero themes, although I did like the rounded corners of windows, for the sake of clarity I abandoned Aero for my own customized Windows Classic appearance. Not flashy but at least clearer for me than any of the other themes.When I installed Windows 7 I quickly reverted to Windows Classic, and chose for the active window title bar colours dark green as Color 1 and a lightish blue for Color 2 (with yellow text), so there was a gradient from green to blue along the title bar. I'm not bothered about whether anyone else likes that - it's served me well for the best combination of clarity and agreeableness through various Windows versions.
Yesterday I followed a tip from a magazine and ran the Windows 7 screen colour calibration facility. After I'd run that I noticed that all my active windows had just the dark green and no gradient. When I went into the Personalize facility to change that back, I found that Color 2 was greyed out, so that I could not set it again.I know this is a silly little point, but actually the gradient did make the active windows look less severe and 'blocky', and I'd like to restore my ability to set the second colour.Reverting to Aero is no option as far as I'm concerned, for to me multiple windows look to me extremely confusing in Aero, and some taskbar text is difficult to read, no matter what colour / lightness settings one uses.Somehow I doubt whether my calibrating the screen colours had anything to do with the little problem I've run into; I assume it must be just coincidence. I did, however, recently switch to manual a few supposedly non-essential services, and just possibly the change occurred then but I didn't notice it till after I'd done that screen colours calibration.
Windows Media Player Has Incorrect Song Title
Dec 17, 2011I've converted a MP3 to a WAV using "Roxio-Copy and Convert". When I did the conversion , there was an old song title ( from a previous conversion ) in the name slot. After the conversion I simply renamed the song to the correct name.If I play that song with any other software , it will have the correct name , if I use windows media player - it defaults back to the old name in the "Now Playing" screen.If I look at the song properties , there is no trace of the old name anywhere - how is media player finding this old ( incorrect ) name , and how do I stop it ? Problem is I have converted many songs with the wrong name - so its not just happening with one song.

Although not the end of the world, it is annoying since when I put the files on my external HDD to play through my PS3 and that shows the title and as they all have the same title I can't tell what I am watching.

It displays correctly in XP, when I have Aero turned off and when I have clicked "Disable Desktop Composition" in compatibility, but not when Aero is running.
I'd like to disable aero (or just the titlebar transparency) for only this program but keep Aero running for everything else, is that possible?

Jan 1, 2013Just reinstalled Windows 7 x64 (no SP1) and I noticed a weird problem. It happens everywhere, but I can best explain it with Task Manager. If you have Task Manager open and you try to resize the window with your mouse, the top tabs (Applications, Processes, Services etc.) flicker.
I have "show windows contents while dragging" enabled. I have Windows classic theme, but I asked a friend with the default Windows 7 theme and he has the same problem.
I don't remember having this problem before re-installing Windows 7 and I have the same chipset/video drivers.
Numbers Included In Song Title
May 6, 2011I have numbers in front of some my music files. Not tracknumbers. The numbers are included in the file name. (03 Sunflower or 01 - Beyond The Sea) etc. My question is, is there anyway to remove the numbers. I can do by renaming each file. Is there any to do this other than renaming one file at a time.

Aero Background And Title Bars Scrambled
Nov 23, 2009When I turn on Aero settings my desktop wallpaper is scrambled along with title bars of applications. Everything else will work fine for a bit, but after a while it 'crashes' and Aero is automatically turned off.
The card I'm using is the ASUS SILENT Radeon HD 3650.
I've searched the threads and solutions to no avail. One member has a similar issue and solved it by switching motherboards (started with a SIS 648 chipset). Unfortunately I only have a SIS 648 chipset motherboard available.
Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution? I've attached screenshots of the effects described.
Taskbar Toolbar Blank Title Entry
Sep 14, 2011I discovered the following entry in my taskbar toolbars: url...As you can see the blank entry does not appear when i right click on taskbar and select toolbars (taskbar1.png). However when i right click on taskbar and then click on properties, the last tab (toolbars) displays an unknown entry (not seen before) with blank title (taskbar2blank.png).I noticed that the same happens even when the system boots in safe mode.A google search didn't help much. I am very familiar with registry editing, but am unable to find the key where these toolbars are added. I also tried running hijackthis but it is very difficult to find something with no name.

Dec 25, 2011On various pictures, I've seen it read the XMP "Title" tag, the EXIF "Description" or "User Comment" tag, the IPTC "Caption" tag, even Keywords or Sub-categories.
So my question is, what's the limit to it all? I would think that "Title" would only display a metadata tag with a similar name, like XMP DublinCore Title, or, if it could only find its IPTC counterpart in a file, Fixture Identifier. I suppose that when you don't give yourselves all that much space to work with, as is the case with the bottom panel of a Windows 7 Explorer window, doubling- and tripling-up like this can be considered practical. Maybe I haven't looked far & wide enough. All the same, I think that a tooltip or some easily-gotten-at description of the fields in that bottom 3/5 of the window would be more than enough to satisfy one's curiosity.
I won't add mischief to misery and ask "Why was this done?" as I've already partly come up with a reasonable answer myself (available space within the bounds of the window). I'll just ask if anyone else has been curious about this, and if so, invite them to comment here on this thread.
Cards Don't Move When Try To Move Them
Aug 20, 2011Win 7 Freecell "sticks" The cards don't move when you try to move them. If you keep trying you get the message "freecell is not responding" or "problem with freecell executable". Could this have anything to do with a recent Norton upgrade? I have tried turning windows games on and off and it doesn't help. If so, where can I get a clean reinstall?

You cannot move appp around in windows as windows makes DLL files and registry entry and moving it will break it.Also Microsoft wants people to use shortcuts and moving apps will break the shortcuts of path of the files.
In OS X all files needed to to run the app are glued with the app and in windows you must run the installer to make the directory where it will copy all files to run the app ,make path ,make the shortcuts and DLL files and registry entry .
Moving files around break the DLL files and registry entry .Part of this is to stop illegal copying.In windows people use the installer to remove or install app we never move app around like in OS X .
Also most time apps have to run in system level in windows not like OS X It is not the scopes of Linux ,windows ,OS X security myths but the thread got little of topic of talking about moving appp around in windows and other OS.
Could Not Move Windows 7 Hdd To Dell Box.
Jun 12, 2012The power supply went out on my Win 7 box(custom built) and so I decided to put it into my granddaughter's Dell box which was running Win XP. I unplugged the XP hdd, plugged in the Win 7 hdd, but it will not complete opening Windows.I've tried using a Win 7 Recovery CD, but none of the 3 I have will boot! So, I used the Win 7 DVD and can get to the install screen, where I've tried the 'repair' option. But, that gives a message that it is unable to repair the computer.

Aug 25, 2012About a year ago, our Pentium D died and I was able to retain a few pieces from the machine, enough actually to rebuild it shortly.
My main question is this: I already tried moving Win 7 Home Premium 32bit from the Pentium D to the Pentium 4 and the hard drive crashed and with some heavy research, I discovered that this was not possible without a nuke and restart.
Please tell me there is some way to go from the P4 to the Pentium D when i rebuild it in a few weeks...? I've been reading that it may be possible if I uninstall all the drivers in safe mode and then move the hard drive to the Pentium D. I've also read that this is not possible with OEM versions, I just double-checked and our copy is retail upgrade from XP.
Vista To Windows 7 Now Need To Move To New PC
Jun 25, 2011A friend upgraded from Vista to Win 7 last month using MS Upgrade (download). He now has the chance to move to a new(and better) pc. Can he use the Lic Key he got with the upgrade and install win 7 on the new pc? His present pc is an HP Desktop and I assume the original vista was OEM.
