Jun 10, 2011I have a Gateway T-6836, updated to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit a few months ago from Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I've had it for about 2 years, After 1 year a virus killed it, and I reformatted it. Now, a few months ago, unknowingly, my flash drive contracted a virus from my school's pc and infected my laptop. I think I most likely deleted the malware or whatever it was, but it left some side effects, such as some services being unable to start. It was also at the same time I installed a windows update, so I'm not sure if it's both a malware problem and/or a Microsoft problem. It deleted all my system restore points after I restarted the computer.
My laptop is completely isolated from the world. No internet, fails to detect anything in the usb slots, and the CD-rom is brokenWhen I'm not connected to a network, there's a yellow asterisk sign, when I'm connected there's a big red X button and I get 'limited connectivity.' When I try to troubleshoot the problem, it gives me "The Diagnostics Policy Service is not running" Tried to repair it and failed. I tried starting it manually in Services but that gives me "Windows could not start the Diagnostic Policy Service service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied."Tried perfmon /repair failed. It gave me an error:"Error:An error occured whiled attempting to generate the report.
Internet Connection Works But Web Applications Are Not?
Sep 11, 2012Let me start by saying that I have a background in computer programming and so I understand most jargon, however I don't have much experience with computer hardware problems and networking, so I may not have tried some very simple things. I believe I've tried everything and I have thus far found no solution to ym problem nor have I even identified what the problem is.So, yesterday morning I was browsing the web as usual, when a power cut happened, obviously stopping me from browsing. When the power came back on, I tried to use my PC again. My network adapter was able to connect to my router once it came back on and very simple programs on my computer were working (for example, little Windows 7 gadgets on my desktop, such as news feeds and even my anti-virus updater) but when I tried to log on to Windows Live Messenger or any of my web browsers (I've tried IE, Firefox and Chrome), nothing works and I can't connect to the internet.
Each browser has the same problem. I can connect to my default homepage (google) each time, but it takes longer than usual, but then it doesn't let me connect to another website.This problem appears to be localized, although I'm having the same problem on both my laptop and my desktop PC, whereas my brother's desktop (which I'm writing from now) and our family's laptop both work fine and are free from this issue. In order to fix it, I have tried resetting my computers, my network adapter AND my router several times, but there is no change. I have tried a full system restore to a restore point 7 days prior to the problem occurring, but no change. I have tried troubleshooting the connection but nothing happens. I have also run a full virus scan with AVG Free and a spyware scan with Windows Defender, both came up clean.
Choosing Internet Access Point For Certain Applications
Sep 15, 2012I am currently using internet on DSL on Local Area Connection. It is not a dial up connection. I also have a WiFi access point. Now, I want my all the applicatons like browsers, Yahoo, Live Messenger etc. to use internet through LAN as usual but there is this application for which I want to use internet for through WiFi, not LAN. Just like Proxy Firewall, you choose for different applications the different proxies. Like this, I want different connections for different applications.

Feb 3, 2012I'm trying to sort out issues with my Windows 7 machine and want to disable/set to manual services that I know are not needed, but every time I have done this in the past (a while ago now) I invariably run into an issue where I've inadvertently disabled a service that was needed by something, and I end up scratching my head (as all of my hair falls out around this point) and enabling everything just to sort it..
Is there any utility that anyone is aware of that lets you toggle service status, with the option to reset to default or reset to last status, while showing a list of services that I've changed?
I can't seem to word it properly for a search engine to find relevant results, and find usually specific services and not something I'm hoping exists.
I wish the Services.msc mmc had a checkbox or some sort of flag to show altered services so you could sort them by that, which would help a lot, but it doesn't.
Can't Download Anything From Email Or Internet
Sep 7, 2011I am using Windows 7 and IE9 and I can't download anything. I also use Norton Antivirus.When I try and download an email attachment for example. Norton tells me the file is safe.When I press download, I get a pop up. I try and run or save as per the pop up and the file begins to download. When it is at the end of the download, I am informed, via the pop, that it is running a security scan. I am then told the file couldn't be downloaded.

When I used the trouble shooter it tell s that I have a broken connection and I should try to reboot my router. I have tried sharing with only "specific people" but it tells "windows was unable to find (name)". I have tried typing in the name of the computer to share with as well as account names.I have run the Homegroup troubleshooter on all computers and I still cannot share specific folders with specific computers.What would be the best way to share how I desire? Is there a better way than with the Homegroup or am I just doing something wrong?
The Manage Add-ons Folder Is Empty
Jul 1, 2010The manage add-ons folder is empty. There are a variety of ways to get to that folder and I have tried them all. There is nothing in it. No toolbars, no search providers, and no Accelerators. It doesn't even contain the InPrivate filtering link. What's more the navigation Pane is also empty.
