I have a 1TB drive I want to install windows on. There is no existing windows installation on the drive, only music, movies, and other files and documents. Is it OK to install windows without formatting this drive? I don't have anything to back up all they data.
View 4 RepliesI have a system with three hard disks on them. The Primary one has the OS and some programs. Secondary one has programs and data (like pictures and such). Third one has data and backup data.I recently formatted the Primary drive which had Windows Vista on it, and did a full install of Windows 7 Pro.After the install, the Secondary and Tertiary disks showed up in disk management; I just had to assign drive letters to them.The issue: I can see the existing Secondary and Tertiary disks in windows explorer. I can go into properties on each hard disk and see that there is used disk space on them (so the data is still there). But Windows Explorer shows both hard disks as empty. I can't actually see any of the data. What can I do to fix this...obviously without formatting the disks and losing the existing data on there? Is this perhaps a driver issue?

I already have a partition in my hard disk ( K: ) where existing User profiles/data are stored. Luckily there is only my profile and one for a guest user. I've read through some of the Tutorials on this site on how to create new users on a different drive/partition at the point of installing Win 7, and I've read how to change the User Folder Name of a profile.The fear I have is that the newname user in the 64bit will obliterate the oldname at the point of being used for the first time.

2X80gb Western Digital SATA Drives
2x2TB Samsung Spintpoint SATA Drives
I have already been using the machine with another 80Gb Western Digital SATA Drive with Windows 7 Pro 64Bit installed and now want to convert to RAID 5 for redunancy in case of Drive failure (We all say we will back up but we are all lazy when it comes to it LOL).I have taken out the original OS drive and plugged it into the E-SATA connector on the MOBO, gone into the BIOS, turned on RAID for the SATA Ports on the MOBO, and connected the 2 X 80Gb Boot drives. Entered the Hardware RAID Controller POST, and created the RAID 5 Volume from the 2 X 80Gb Discs.Now boot with Acronis Wester Digital edition.Clone the Original 80Gb Disc to the new Raid Array.Shut machine off, remove original OS 80gb Disc from E-SATA port.Boot machine.It starts to boot, and gets as far as the Windwos 7 Microsoft 4 Colour logo and then I get an error and then have to boot into Windows 7 from DVD and go through the repair process.When the Repair has run it reports the following:

I have seen the great tutorial for doing a clean install. In this case I am looking for another tip. My computer is already Windows 7 with lots of software. Performance has come to a point I want to do a clean install and start all over.The question? The Windows 7 install should be a piece of cake, but I think keeping track of all the software and reinstalling it can be a pain.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed a recent (2012) game yesterday on windows 7 64-bit and when it finished it had a checkbox "Install DirectX". I clicked it and it showed progress installing but some of the files had the directx9_ description. That seemed bizarre because windows 7 already have the latest directx 11 version. Opening dxdiag it showed version directx 11. Is there any way i can re-install the latest version or that installer didn't change anything? Should i do a system restore prior to that installation or am i ok and have the latest version of directx? I want to have directx11 support in most of my games.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Windows 7 on an HP DV6-1253cl notebook from a USB flash drive and running into problems that are preventing the install. (Note: It's not the rig that is in my system specs.)
When I try and clean install Windows 7 64-bit over the existing Vista system partition (C), I get the following error.
"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."
Thing is, setup shows that partition as well as the HP recovery partition and an external USB drive that is also connected to this notebook and offers all of those as choices for installing Windows 7 onto.
Can anyone help me figure out why Windows 7 won't install on the existing Vista C partition and tell me how to get it to install?
My driver are combined into one drive. I install my os too. I need a tool to partition that drive.

I would like to try out the Windows 8 developer trials, it seems logical given my situation to dual boot, allowing me to keep my current install and test Windows 8 simultaneously. I have a spare 80gb hard drive I could use, or I could create a partition on one of my existing hard drives, but a partition is much less ideal. I have tried dual booting linux on the hard drive before, but the linux drive over rode my dual boot set up (I obviously did something wrong), and I could only boot to linux.
How can I safely dual boot Windows 8 on this hard drive (or a partition if necessary), while keeping my Windows 7 install and data in-tact? Just to let you know I have over a TB of data spread over 2 drives but only 2 TB of hard drive space, so I can't back up a lot of my data, just a heads up.
Can you delete your existing webcam and install a better one on acer?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought a Toshiba Satellite L500-20Z, and it does not tell me which version I am running, ( 32or64 ) though I know it IS x64. The in-store shpeil said it was equipped with Win 7 Home premium 64bit, with 32bit recovery partition.
Question 1 - is there any way to tell between 32 or 64 (apart from a "Program Files (x64)" folder on my C: drive), and
Question 2 - how do I tell what build I have? (the above link says nothing)
Question 3 - how to tell if the recovery is 64 and not just 32 without wiping my existing install?
(I suppose I could take an image of my current C: drive and use that instead of the recovery partition if disaster strikes.... only trouble is with OEM theres so much bloat and crap that's incluided...)
basically, I'm currently using 2 hard drives. A 160gb ide drive and a 1 TB Spinpoint F3. I'm going to be doing an upgrade tomorrow, and when I do, I want to switch to just using the one TB hard drive as my only drive. The issue is that I've got about 400GB in stuff I'd rather not lose. Primarily Steam games that would take me months to download again without pushing my monthly download limit too much.Basically, I want to know if there's a way to install windows 7 onto this drive without losing the data currently on it. I know that when I originally upgraded my current drive from XP to windows 7, I got a windows.old folder that seemed to have a lot of my data in it. Is it possible to do something similar when doing a fresh OS install without one already being present? If not, my only real alternative would be a TB drive my dad recently purchased, but it's for a laptop. I'm not entirely sure how to connect it to my computer, but I could figure that out, but I'd like to find a way to do this without an external if it's possible.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy desktop pc crashed, and after some investigation it turns out that the main hard drive is probably dead... So I thought I would install Windows 7 onto my portable terabyte. Anyway when I tried to install Windows 7 onto my hard drive, I realised 2 things:
- Windows will clear my TB HD when it installs.
and
- Windows cannot install onto a USB device.
I need to install windows 7 on my portable hard drive without removing any data on it. I have tried to partition my hard drive with easyus as a friend recomended, but it says I need to convert it to a logical, and I cant do that because it says something about clearing the HD.
I installed two new 120GB SSD drives into my system. Previously, I had two 1TB drives in a RAID 0. After doing a performance test to see if there was a speed increase, I also bound the two new 120Gb SSDs into a NEW RAID 0.The idea was to use the new, faster array for windows, and whatever programs I am currently using, and then use the old array for storage. I could install windows on the new drives with So, I proceeded to install Windows 7 on the new array, leaving the old array alone. Installation went without a hitch. I looked at my new drive under My Computer- 1.98 TB. NOT the 240GB partition I just made, and NOT the 1.74 TB partition I used before the new drives.It, for some reason I cant fathom, combined all 4 drives, encompassing BOTH arrays, new and old HDD and SSD into one partition, and had installed windows OVER TOP OF ALL MY DATA.I dont know WHY this happened, but what do I do now to get my data back? I tried starting the computer without the new array, but it wont boot. I need my data back, and I need to get windows installed on the new array, the way I wanted.

I can no longer install programs or modify existing programs.According to the security permissions, I have none. Nor can I change my permissions because in order to change them I need access to the C drive, which I don't have.I have tried creating other users and putting them in the admin group, etc. but nothing is working.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHis system have 3 partitions, 2 of which (drive D and E) are dedicated to data. About 2 months ago, he did a full reinstall of his XP system and upgrade to 7. After sometime, for whatever reason, he downgraded his system back to XP. On that system, he did some work and added 50gb+ data to the data partition.Today, he reformatted the C drive and install 7 again. The funny thing is, the 50gb+ data he added when on XP now missing. All other data is intact. In fact, the state of the 2 data partition is like when he last use 7 before downgrading to XP.just to be clear, all his data partition is intact after today's 7 install, only those data (contained on several folders) he added when on XP is missing.

After recently trying out windows 8 i was stupid enough not to data my data and thought win8 would install onto a partition i made for it. View 2 Replies View RelatedI build, and then support many computers for my friends and family. I have recently started making them feel a bit more "manufactured" by using a factory-style recovery option (press F9 at boot to enter recovery / uses a hidden recovery partition etc...).
The issue I have though, is I often get asked to "wipe" someone's computer following a virus/malware infestation (and yes, I do supply AV, but that isn't always enough).
So, I use Sysprep to install all additional software, drivers etc... but the one problem I have is that I like to have, and usually always configure PC's to store items like Documents/Pictures/Music/Videos etc... on a seperate partition.
The problem is, when I configure this in Sysprep - the settings are lost when the user completes OOBE.
Ideally, I do not want to move the entire "Users" directory, I just want the libraries to never look at any folders on the C: drive, only the ones on D: (D:\%USERNAME%Documents etc...).
I want it so that when files "detect" where to save, it locates the appropriate directory on the D: drive, so they dont have to always manually locate the folders.
The reason I dont want the entire "Users" folder on D: is that following a restore or 2, it will get messy...
I would like to either automate this during setup, or would happily take a manual approach during Sysprep - as long as it applied these settings to all users as and when they are created.
I would like the cleanest way to do this, ideally without junctions/symlinks.
