View 1 RepliesI just bought captioned lappy off ebay without OS. I want to install Win XP. It has no dvd drive and I don't have an external drive. I have Win XP pro on a cd, and 7 ultimate on a dvd and as well as it's image in my toshiba laptop. I actually intend to follow the instructions to dual boot but my question is how do i install the first OS on a netbook with no optical drive? Also I don't know if it has a restore from partition, I will check when I get home tonight, but I don't think so.

im off to my first computer build and i've got basically everything except for an optical drive, i saw this video about using a flash drive to boot win 7, im a little cautious in doing this cuz the vid is already 2 years old, im wondering if its still possible? I dunno if i can post the link of the vid here so you guys can put some input if that way of booting win 7 still works or if theres another way to do it, i do have the windows7 os but am still waiting for my optical drive wich would arrive next week, and im really excited to boot my pc that ive already installed everything else and am just waiting for that optical drive

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm doing a new OS install, using my the same Windows 7 64 install disk as before. I do have new drives, but they are just newer versions of my old drives (which died) - and they are pretty standard HP slim drives.
For some reason, the OS install will not complete. It's saying that an optical drive driver is missing, and wants me to install it manually.
these drives did NOT come with any driver cd, nor is there a driver available on the HP support site. They must be plug&play.
My mother wants to buy a small laptop (13.3'' toshiba t130D). When I went to the store to buy it, the salesman told me that I need to pay 85$ to get windows 7 installed on it since it has NO OPTICAL DRIVE. It seems like a rip-off... I was wondering... because I have no exterior dvd drive, is there ANY way else that I could use to install Windows 7 on that laptop since it is brand new. Can I use a USB key? Or that is only possible when a computer already has an OS installed on it? Is having an exterior drive the only possible way to install this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a DIY computer package from Tigerdirect. I put all the parts together, making sure to handle the parts correctly. Once everything was hooked-up, hardware-wise, I tried to install Windows 7 off of a friend's USB drive. It almost worked, but it requested that I insert a disk into the drive, which I couldn't do.I bought a brand new Windows 7 OEM version. Computer still won't boot-up, even though BIOS screen shows that the optical drive is connected. After checking the boot order sequence several times, I figured that the driver must have something wrong with it, so I bought a cheap DVDROM. Both optical drives are made by LG (not sure if relevant) but neither work. In fact, neither one would even spin-up the disk. Message on screen reads: 'Reboot and Select proper boot device, or insert boot media into boot device and press any key.'

1. I have NO INTERNET CONNECTION (everyone keeps telling me to install drivers...how can I do this without internet connection??)
2. Windows is not recognizing my second hard drive in the optical drive even though it did when I was installing and showed it at the section where you can add new partitions etc
3. My display adpater is not working as I have a 1600x900 screen and I can only go up to 1024x768...

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy friend has an HP Pavilion DV6 Entertainment Notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installed. It's only about 3 months old. I rebuilt the unit with a fresh copy of Win 7 HP 64bit as I did not want all the bloat-ware that came with the machine. The issue is that the unit is unable to see the optical drive (no optical drive icon). In the device manager, there is an exclamation mark next to the optical drive. It was working originally. Windows 7 normall takes care of the drivers for this drive doesn't it? Is the optical drive faulty. I've tried un-installing and re-installing but still hasn't corrected itself.

After installing three or four updates yesterday my laptop now clicks the optical drive a couple of times as I start any video or music file on the hard drive. Not a fatal flaw, but, very irritating just the same. Did a system restore to the morning before the updates- same behavior remains. Installed updates again, removed them one at a time, same thing. Restored to over a week ago, same behavior! What is up with this clicking. The files start and play immediately, no problem there, I'd just like the optical drive to mind it's own business. Movie discs play fine, burns stuff fine, just go to your corner and SHUT UP!
I currently do not have any internal optical drive, but I do have a USB optical drive instead. Would it be possible to boot up Windows 7 from the external drive in the UEFI Bios? This is for a new computer without a formatted hard drive, if it helps.

BIOS F.2C
AMD Turion 64x2 TL-60 2.00 GHz

Windows 7 Home Premium, 32-bit OS, all updates installed
Somewhere, after a Windows 7 update many months ago, the problem started. I had no problems before. It started with the OS not recognizing the optical disk drive that came installed with the laptop. The computer's set-up BIOS recognizes the drive as being there. The optical drive does not show in Device Manager. I tried changing out the disk drive, it did not work. Soon, Windows 7 would occasionally lock up at the boot screen, but work fine on a cold reboot following a lock-up.
But then the lock-ups became permanent and cyclical. No amount of reboots would facilitate. I went to do a clean install using an external USB optical drive and accidentally discovered it cured the problem! The laptop will not lock up if the external USB optical drive is hooked up and turned on when starting the computer. I tried a clean install of the operating system. I tried updating the drivers. Windows 7 always recognizes I had problems booting and sends the error messages to Microsoft.
I have an Acer Aspire 5720. It is not listed on Acer's website as compatible with Win 7, however many other models with the same specs are. I have been able to find drivers for most of the hardware. The only ones I cannot locate are a Windows 7 x64 driver for both the Alps Touchpad and the Bison Crystal Eye webcam. I am an adventurous one, and have a solid backup, so I am going to try it anyway. I was just looking for any assistance in locating those two drivers.

Things I have tried (with no success):
- Disabling and uninstalling the drive from the control panel
- checking boot priority (SSD is my boot drive), optical drive is now completely removed from boot sequence in BIOS (it was 3rd)
