View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Intel 320 120GB SSD that I just installed last Tuesday. Everything went well with loading a image on it from my spinning HDD. Offset is correct and thdrive is running well.I got up the other morning to find that somehow Windows Auto Update had been turned on and the system had restarted after Win Update had downloaded & installed 18 updates without my permission. So today I re-loaded that original image I had used on Tuesday to get rid of the 18 updates (Whether I do them in the further is u to me not MS).This started me thinking about loading a image on a SSD drive.
1) Should I first run the Clean All command to wipe the drive before loading a image on it?
2) What effect does re-imaging a SSD have on the data, partitions and files that are already on the drive?
The program I use is Acronis TI 2011 that they say has full SSD support. But what does that really mean. During the re-image TI deletes all partitions and then recreates them as to what is contained in the image, even if they are the same.Reading some reports about SSDs deleting partitions & formatting the speed of the SSD was reduced by just deleting a partition and then recreating it and wasn't reduced by just formatting it. In fact formatting it seemed to improve the performance. So now I'm wondering Should I go back and format or run the Clean All command and then re-image the drive with that original image.
I have a first generation envy 14 running windows 7 HP. Ports (COM and lpt) were showing up and working fine up until I reformatted the computer. I then noticed that they were gone. I installed all the drivers for my machine, most notably the chipset drivers, from the HP website. I enabled "show hidden devices" in device manager. I reformatted again, including trying windows 8 beta, and then back to 7.
I went through the bios to look for an option to turn ports on or off, and couldn't find it. So I updated to the latest bios and checked again, including finding a way into the advanced menu. I'm at a loss now... its like the ports don't exist?
I was trying to install Widows 7RC on Sony VAIO CS-14G laptop. I inserted the disc, clicked on Install and got the following error:
[code]....
So I have this problem that it would appear heaps of others have:
I have a Kogan Agora pro: Kogan Agora Netbook PRO - Kogan Technologies Pty Ltd
It does have a sata hdd. I looked through the BIOS but couldn't find any places to change the sata settings to AHCI or raid.
I am trying to install from a usb key (using an ISO I created from an install dvd) but had the same problem with a downloaded iso. Also tried to install using the default language settings (As identified by David76 in another thread) but no luck.
I think it relates to the SATA HDD. I put the drivers for the netbook onto a seperate usb drive which it finds and lists in the box but none of the drivers do anything (hit next it thinks about things for a while then says no new drivers found).
I am really starting to get a bit ticked and regretting my move away from linux. If it wasn't for a few particular programs I use that don't work on linux i would have given up ages ago.
What's going on? The install says a driver is missing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just ordered an SSD for one of the laptops, meaning I'll have a nice 7200 RPM hard drive sitting unused.
My main desktop is a wonderful mini-ITX system with a single M4 SSD. It is currently backed up, along with all the laptops, to an Asus Windows Home Server machine, so I'm fairly confident about my data integrity in case of failure. But realizing that one can never be too safe with the primary desktop, and as the little Antec case has room for a second 2.5 inch drive, it occurs to me that the now-superfluous hard drive could be installed into the desktop and used for periodic (daily?) imaging.
The SSD has the usual mysterious 100 MB recovery partition and a single C: partition for the Windows 7 x64 Ultimate machine.
There's a lot of talk about moving from hard drive to SSD, but going the opposite direction just isn't discussed. Guess this is an odd situation.
So: would I have any alignment issues or other potential snags in imaging my SSD to a hard drive? Would the usual ideally-free software solutions such as Macrium or EaseUs be appropriate for this task?
This tutorial shows the complete imaging and recovery cycle using free Macrium as the example.

View 5 Replies View Relatedabout a month ago, my Windows 7 Starter went dead on my Toshiba NB250 netbook. At first I thought it was a HDD issue. I tried using downloaded 7 recovery tools to no avail, and for some reason, whatever took out the OS, took the factory installed recovery partition with it..After a few days, I was sick of waiting for the recovery media to arrive, so I tried Installing Ubuntu Netbook 10.10. It worked, so I assume the HDD is fine. The recovery media is on dvds, so it's useless to me (for some reason my BIOS doesn't support a boot from an external dvd drive). I got an iso of windows 7 starter. I've seen a ton of threads and responses where people say that the iso may be corrupted due to a bad download. Mine's fine, because it installs and runs in VirtualBox no problem.
I used the microsoft USB startup creation tool through my virtualbox installation. Thing is, whenever I try an install, I get a message saying there is a missing cd/dvd device driver. The thing has no cd/dvd drive, so I don't know what that's about. I tried copying the iso contents onto another piece of media, and did not make that bootable. I tried an install from my bootable usb, and then plugged in the usb of files. Nothing.I found this download on cnet, because I read about some guy who was messing around with his drivers to get an install to work. The cnet download was apparently only for vista, and when I put on my non-bootable media, and tried to install it when Windows asked for it, the installation told me that something was up with the drivers. Something to the tune of "contact the manufacturer for the newest software".
i have the same problem with "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step."i have a dell mini 10 (1012) & it doesn't have a dvd drive. i have Windows 7 home premium (upgraded from starter). i made a bootable usb stick (downloaded iso file from mintywhite & then made the bootable stick). that process worked fine.when i try to do the re-install, however, get the message noted above. i read on another post to 'disable the raid function in bios'. i also tried downloading ALL my dell drivers & tried the re-install with them on another flash drive stuck in the machine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt was working fine, I didn't install or change nothing (mostly is used as MediaCenter). It was working perfectly without any change for months. Then I shutdown one day as always, and when I reboot the next day no network is present. The PC is an Acer Aspire X3900 desktop with an integrated intel NIC. This is what I have seen: In the Windows 7 network configuration panel there isn't any NIC present. IPCONFIG shows nothing, no adapter is listed (is not like when you unplug the network cable and the adapter is listed buy without the IPs; now the command shows nothing at all). But, and that is the weird thing, in device manager all seems fine. The Intel NIC is listed without any warning mark. Looking the properties, all looks ok. This is what I had already try: I reinstalled the NIC drivers. No changes. Reinstalled the chipset drivers. No changes. Uninstalled NIC drivers with an Intel utility. Then I rebooted and reinstalled the drivers when windows detected the new hw. No changes. Disabled the NIC adapter in device manager, reboot and re-enable. No changes. Uninstalled the NIC adapter in device manager. Reboot and re-install the drivers when windows detect the new hw.No changes. Disabled the NIC adapter in BIOS. Boot windows, shutdown, re-enable the adapter in BIOS, and reboot. einstall the drivers. No change. Recover the system from an old recover point, but no change.
