View 1 Replies View RelatedI have purchased a laptop computer, it was for a 64 bit copy of windows. I was having problems getting the computer to work in our office, so after much research I determined I needed the 32bit copy of windows 7. I popped a disk for windows 32bit in the computer and it automatically started to copy the needed files to install the windows 7 32bit edition. It stored my old settings in a windows.old folder. s
So I figured this was something really cool that Windows had coded to allow someone to quickly change over to a 32 bit OS. Last week I get a message that my copy of windows is not genuine. I tried entering the code on the underside of my laptop and it stated that it was for a different copy of windows. The problem I am having is I now have a working laptop with windows 7 that has been working fine for a long time. I don't want to have to buy a new OS license.
I have one internal drive with 1 TB. The data there is very important to me , so I bought External removable drive for backup. Now, I want to copy the data from one drive to the second drive but I have to be sure I have a perfect copy of the data. The data is mostly songs movies and documents. I'm using windows 7.
My question is this:
1.If I'll transfer the data through windows 7 by copy and paste, I could be sure i have a perfect copy? 2.There are tools for comparison Between the original data to the data that was copied?
What is the best free program that can copy discs to ISO files and also burn them, even if they are copy protected?
View 4 Replies View RelatedHow can I get Windows 7 to name copied files using the scheme "Copy of" (used in Windows XP and earlier) instead of the default scheme "- Copy", whenever a file is copied to the same directory as the original file?In other words, if you copy a file named "Foo.txt" in a directory to the same directory, Windows XP would have named that file "Copy of Foo.txt", but Windows 7 names the file "Foo - Copy.txt". I want the copy to be named "Copy of Foo.txt".There are several reasons why I prefer the XP style file name:
1. It is familiar :-)
2. I have existing files that use the XP style file names, and I want all my file copies to use the same naming scheme. I guess I can do a massive file rename across all my backups, but that would solve only one of my problems.
3. Most of my folders are sorted by name, and using XP style would sort all copies together. On other forums it has been suggested that one can simply sort by date (to get the copies sorted together), but that advice assumes that all copies are created after all other files are created, which is actually not often the case.
4. I often work with long file names, which means that the end of the file name is often obscured, unless I have wide windows (not always possible) and use lots of horizontal scrolling every time I want to select a file. Hovering over a file to get its full name is a cumbersome solution.
5. On other forums some have given the advice to always make copies in subfolders, but I often make copies or copies of copies while I work (it allows me to roll back or to check earlier versions of a file quickly, during my work), and using subfolders would slow me down tremendously (not to mention confuse me).
I know that when TeraCopy is made the copy handler, it renames files in a different way than Windows 7 does, though unfortunately not the way Windows XP did it. Also, if one installs a third-party directory program such as Opus, it asks for a file name every time a copy is made, but I need something that simply names the file correctly immediately.
I have installed windows 7 evaluation copy build 7201 and i want to find out if i will be able to upgrade it to the original copy and how? Any suggestions?

My computer got the BootMGR is missing problem, which I have had in the past which is not that big. I insert the Windows 7 64 Ultimate disk it starts up everything fine, press repair my computer and it finds the installation. But when I press on it and next it has an error pop up saying "This version of system recovery options is not conpattble with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that i compatible with this version of Windows." If I dont select anything but press next it allows me to look at the screen Im supposed to, but if I go to command prompt or click autmatically repair nothing will be saved or changed. This is the same disc I installed Windows with and repaired it several times. But I did have to reset BIOS earlier so this may have affected something.

I tried using FBackup and had the same problem. Also, I cannot transfer files across the wireless network from an XP laptop, although that used to work.

I'm thinking of building my own computer and I was wondering if it would be possible to buy an old unboxed Vista or XP OS and then buy the windows 7 upgrade so as to save some money. Windows 7 costs around 100$ retail but the upgrades are only around 30$. What stops people from doing what I'm proposing?

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust bought this net-book that came with Win 7 Premium. The first thing they recommend is to make a copy of their OS. Now this netbook did not come back with a burner, which i was aware of anyway. They do recommend a usb flash drive with the capacity of 12 gb's. I do not want to have to spend more money on another gadget just to make a copy of it. I do have a burner in my desktop which i have networked to the net-book, and am trying to see if i could at least copy or share it to my desktop and make copies there...but having a heck of a time so far.

I purchased a used HP Netbook 110 with Win7 on it, and the first time we turned it on it updated Win7 with the result that we now have an unauthenticated copy. The box the unit came in said it was sold with XP SP3, so I'm guessing the prevoius owner loaded an unauthenticated copy of Win7 on. There is a product code sticker on the bottom of the netbook but no product is actually specified -- I'm guessing it's XP. As the netbook did not come with any CDs (no drives to use them in) would a computer shop restore to XP without me having to purchase the OS? It seems I am "entitled" to one, but don't have the means to load it onto the machine. Or should I get a copy of Win7?
My machines are running XP but they are Dell desktops and I don't know if that would work -- most probably not. Any ideas anyone? This is my first experience with Win7, so I'm not sure if purchasing a copy is a good idea. I've stayed away from it until now -- I actually purchase a computer the week Win7 was released and fought with Dell to get it delivered with XP.
I purchased a Dell desktop a few months ago which came with DOS.The store installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit for RS 9000(about $170).But for the past few days it is displaying the above message with an error code 0x8004fe22.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to copy a series of files from my old XP machine to the new Win 7 machine. I've turned off User access control, I made myself the owner of the machine, etc., the files on the old machine have no permissions preventing the copying. I am the owner of both machines and there is no firewall blocking the files. About every third or fourth file says I need admin permission to copy it. But I can't figure out how to give myself this permission. Out of 400 in the folder, 296 copied over, the remainer did not. These are not executables, they are machine embroidery files with the file extension ".pes". This is just the first folder I need to copy. I have almost 100,000 of these files that have to be copied and can't afford to lose any.
I can't find anything online that relates to this kind of issue. How do I clear this out so I can get these files copied to the new machine? what criteria Win 7 uses to determine which files it will copy and which require admin permission. Is it the length of the file name? Characters in the filename? The name of the folder they are going into? I would sure hate to have to rename 100,000 files.
I own a WD Passport (320GB). I'm having problems in copying files from my PC to the HDD. It was working fine a few days ago but I can't seem to copy any file though I can easily read the files stored at a very high speed. But the problem is probably with my computer since I can copy files from my laptop without an itch.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy laptop decides to refuse to power on. Not just boot, the power button had no response. 3 months later, i finally find a cheap motherboard for it, and swap it out.In that 3 months, i had taken the hard drive out, and had used it as a slave drive in my family's desktop. I'd occasionally boot directly to the drive itself, and after the first boot, it automatically obtained all the drivers for the desktop. All was well.
Well, about a week before my motherboard arrived, Windows 7 freaked and reset the permissions for every one of the 401,541 files on the partition during a scheduled chkdsk (replacing invalid security ID with default security ID). Now, it'll boot, but after the "Windows Loading" animation, it'll give me a black screen and a cursor. Nothing more. no key combinations (so no replacing sethc.exe with cmd.exe), no nothing. I can move the cursor, and turn the computer off.
