Having Many Idle Applications Cause System To Be Sluggish?

Aug 17, 2012

I have many applications on it which I rarely use but I still need them on occasionI moved my default profile to an external drive leaving my C: drive with nothing but the operating system yet there are still times when my computer is running at 100% CPU. How can these non-operating applications affect my system performance? I notice from the task manager that some of them are running. How can I find out which processes to remove when I don't recognize them by name? There are many which claim to be associated with Microsoft and Intel. Can I disable everything from starting with MSCONFIG

System Idle Process Using All CPU - Two OS Installed On Machine

Sep 22, 2011

For the past week the System idle process has been hogging all my CPU. Have done the usual investigative routes, scans, safe mode scans etc. I have used my residential products: Malwarebytes, Superanti-spyware, Eset SS5 and have tried a couple of others being Hitman pro and Kaspersky on-line virus scanner. Since the problem started I have been trying to think of any odd installations but nothing springs to mind, to that end I have already put two different OS's on the machine and the problem still exists even in safe mode! I'm Running Win 7 x64.

BSOD While System Idle, 0x0000009F Driver_Power_State_Failure

Apr 4, 2012

I've been getting random BSODs over the past several months. The latest is the one listed in the thread title, but I've also had the following:

- Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error, 0x0000007A

- Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_Area, 0x00000050

- A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited, 0x000000F4

Whenever I get one of these, it also gives the additional error "Physical memory dump Failed with status 0xC0000010"I've seen about a dozen BSODs in the past 12 months with these four errors, and I think all of them have been while I had left the computer idle for various amounts of time (never more than a few hours).I built this computer from the ground up with all new components a year ago and have been running Win 7 Ultimate x64, no re-installs.

Process Called System Idle Overloads CPU

Jun 18, 2012

Today I've turned computer on, and when Windows loaded, I saw that CPU load of my computer is 25-35 % and is caused by "System Idle process". Ok, I know that this process works when computer does nothing, but I've noticed one important thing - until this process wasn't working on my laptop, PC was working on batteries up to 5 hours, now, when this in normal process is working, time on batteries is 2h 50 min (max)... How I can turn off that process? I've already reinstalled Windows, only because of that problem, and I was happy only 3 days, today, this process returned. I use Russian version of Windows. I also uploaded two screenshots, where you can see that "system idle process", I've marked it (Screenshot nr.2) [URL].

System:
Acer 5750G
I5-2430M 2.4Ghz

System Idle Process Running Before Windows 7 Starts?

Aug 17, 2012

In the last 2 days when I start my Win 7 Pro x64 PC I have a problem. After the Welcome screen goes I get a blue screen (Not BSOD) with my cursor in the centre and my Windows 7 title in the bottom right-hand corner. This lasts for about 90 seconds then Windows starts up. I pressed Control, Alt and Delete whilst the blue screen was up and selected Task Manager. The only Process running was System Idle Process. I thgought it was only supposed to run when the system was idle not starting up. I know Windows will not allow you to stop the process but what is causing it to run. My computer is normally a fast start-up - about 32 seconds, but suddenly this. What have I done to my dream machine (12 gb of Ram, 5 hard-drives)?

System Idle Process Taking Up 75 Percent Of CPU Usage

Dec 6, 2011

I recently installed some new hardware into my computer.

Specs:
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD4
i5 2500k @ 4.5GHz
HyperX DDR3 1600
2x HD5870s
PC P&C 750W PSU
Crucial M4 64GB SSD (for my OS)

Everything went fine, computer performs top notch. But I'm having several issues (note, these issues happened BEFORE the CPU overclock also, so that isn't the problem).

1. Randomly (doesn't happen often), my computer will seem to lose internet connection. I'm hard wired right to my Linksys E3000, and it says that I'm connected, but no internet sites will load. Also, I cannot open the "network and sharing center". It just won't let me click on the icon in the task bar. And my CPU usage hovers around 25-30% when this happens. I downloaded and installed Process Explorer to see what the culprit was, and I noticed that of the 30% CPU usage, "System Idle Process" was taking up 75% of said CPU usage. It doesn't happen often at all, and restarting clears the problem up. But even though this SSD is lightning fast.

2. Smaller problem, but sometimes when I want to shutdown or restart, my computer just wont. It will sit at the "shutting down" screen forever and will basically do nothing, like there is a process in the background preventing it from doing its thing.

Can Create A System Image Of Just Programs / Applications

Oct 9, 2012

I've been using computers ever since Windows 3.1 and '95 and I have been plagued with dozens upon dozens of hdd crashes and similar occurrences which forced me to reformat and reinstall all the programs I use (and have to search and find them again...). I have learned a lot since '95. One method of keeping my apps and media safer is by keeping them on a separate larger internal hdd and running my OS on a smaller ~400gb hard drive. I have just gotten into creating full system images with Acronis that fill up 3+ blu ray discs, which is ok if I'm only making one ever, but my documents and programs consist of more than half of that data. It would be nice to make one full system image right after I reformat my computer and install all device drivers I'll be using; my questions below are in regards to making images of the programs to allow very simple install later. Let me say this as well: I know of the extreme difficulty of taking a system image created on 'PC A' and using it on 'PC B'.Basically unless PC A and B the same brand and model something is bound to not work correctly due to driver issues and hardware incompatibility. Anyways, what I am interested in now is to get one of my computers installed with all the software and plugins I typically use and create a "system image" consisting of only my programs and the necessary files to have them run properly. I understand this may be unfeasible but I'd like to further my knowledge and hear from others their ideas to my problem. I say it may be unfeasible because, when installing a program, files are saved into many different directories, including various folders within "Users" and the hidden folder "ProgramData" (as well as possibly to the "Windows" folder and/or C: as well as the computer's registry).I feel this may work if I get every file that was created at installation time as well as run windows 7 on all of my computers that I'll be using this "software-only system image" on.Is there any software that will allow me to accomplish my goal or at least make my job easier? If this is possible and assuming I'll only be using 64-bit versions of Win7, will I run into problems between, say, Home Premium and Ultimate? Is the structure or layout of the OS different in the ways / directories it installs programs into?If the above fails or is impossible then.I was considering another idea but with more work for me.In school, both high school and college we had computer labs and every computer had the same programs installed and there were many programs (say 20 programs * 100 computers in the larger labs). Albeit the computers were the same make/model, lets forget that fact for the purpose of this question, as well as the fact that all the computers were networked together which may allow little tricks here and there... Forget those facts and here is my last question: Instead of just having an image of already installed programs would there be a way for me to somehow install, say, 50 programs without launching each one individually? I would be very surprised if a program like this didn't already exist for IT people yet. For example, in a law firm, if someone in the office gets a virus do they call in the IT guys and they 1) reformat the computer 2) install OS 3) reinstall all required software one after the next? Seems a bit time consuming, in my example 20 apps * 100 computers, I couldn't imagine installing the same programs 2000 times.

Ntoskrnl.exe Threads Hosted By System Idle Process Load 100%

Sep 23, 2012

I'm experiencing very annoying issue. CPU loaded with System Idle Process always. Because of that there is serious lag in iterfase. Problem appeared almost sumultaniusly on there different PCs. Using "Process Explorer" and going to System Idle Process - Threads I've found processes with names: ntoskrnl.exe!KiDespatch Interrupt+0x650 (on one PC) or ntoskrnl.exe!KiCpuId+0x6a0 (on two others)

I have three diffenent machines - one old acer laptop, one modern desktop and wmware virtual machine running on macbook. All have same OS - win 7 ultimate sp1. All of them are in the same network.

I've tried to localise issue by removing services and applications from startup - nothing, I've scanned machines with microsoft security essentials, Dr Web CureIT and Kaskpersky virus removal tool. Still nothing.

CPU get loaded as soon as system starts. Number of ntoskrnl.exe instances equals to number of CPU kernels. 1, 2 and 8 in my case on different PCs .

Sluggish Performance - Ran ComboFix Without Assistance?

Mar 16, 2012

ComboFix was recommended to me in the past, so I disabled avast! and I ran ComboFix as an administrator. Once it was finished, my laptop rebooted and I was presented with the "Preparing Log Report" screen, so I eventually closed ComboFix. Nothing would run until I rebooted and now everything seems to have gone back to the way it was (sluggish performance included.)After some quick research, I came to realize that running ComboFix without assistance is a bad idea. I'd like to make sure I haven't done any damage to my system and, if possible, improve its performance.

My specs are as follows:
Asus G50VT (BestBuy edition)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Intel Core2 Duo P7450 (2.13GHz, dual core)
4GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 9800M GS 512MB

Aftermarket Broadcom WiFi adapter (I needed this to run Mac OS X alongside Windows and Ubuntu, but only Windows is installed now.)
Also, due to reheating, I recently removed the heatsinks from the CPU & CPU, cleaned out dust and applied Arctic Silver 5 thermal grease.

Laptop Is Sluggish To The Point Of Being Unusable?

Sep 10, 2012

In short, my Dell Latitude E4310 laptop is sluggish to the point of being unusable. I am also unable to keep the Windows Defender service running.

Last week I had a blue screen error (code c000021a), presumably resulting from an improperly applied Windows update. I was able to return to an earlier instance of Windows and successfully apply the patches.

Here's what I've checked / done (not necessarily in this order). My BIOS is the most recent (A11), and BIOS diagnostics come up clean. Several safe mode virus & malware scans have come up clean. Windows Start-up Repair found no problem. I've run a clean boot to no avail -- Advanced Search The power plan seems normal, and I've (temporarily) uninsalled all anti-virus & malware programs. I've run disk clean-up and defragged the hard disk System properties, Advanced, Performance, Settings is set to 'Adjust for best performance' My Windows Experience Index scores range from 6.9 (processor) to 4.1 (graphics). Running a Windows System Health Report doesn't return anything. CHKDSK (right-click c:, properties, tools, error-checking) did find and repair some HDD errors. I'd attach the CHKDSK and WININIT logs, but neither is to be found in either my or the Admininstrator event logs. I've run SFC.EXE three times, and each time the verification only gets to 10% then fails, stating the following: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

The SFC log looks normal save for the following: 2012-09-07 22:30:28, Info CSI 00000023 [SR] Cannot verify component files for b10e9bd0c69db5027b503ea3749c28f3, Version = 6.1.7600.16820, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral, manifest is damaged (FALSE). More importantly, often when in sleep mode or hibernation, the computer crashes. I've run two spyware programs (spybot and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware) which removed a few issues, but the core problems persist. I've updated all microsoft programs (windows and office), run Norton virus scans, and CCleaner, but no change. Finally, I must say that at times the laptop runs really hot. Mouse Sluggish After Sleep And Screen Constantly Dims

Dec 28, 2009

I have a brand new dm3t series laptop. There are two issues that I'm having with the laptop that no one can seem to figure out. I literally had an HP tech remote access my laptop and spend an hour trying to figure out what was wrong.

I have tried system restore, recovery, re installation of drivers and really everything else they've asked me to do. I turn to the forum to see if anyone is can help, thanks much.

1) First issue is very annoying. When I awake my computer from sleep the mouse is very sluggish and doesn't hardly respond to the track pad. Furthermore, the mouse is a magnify glass and when I do try to move the mouse via track pad it just zooms in and out. Oddly enough, after a few minutes of sitting there the mouse starts to work again. It's almost like the mouse has to warm up. It is very frustrating.

2) Second issue is the display on battery power. When on battery power the screen CONSTANTLY is dimming and brightening itself. For instance as I'm typing this thread the screen is brightening and dimming for no apparant reason. I'm not sure why and i'm sure it is wasting my battery. I've tried all sorts of power management tips/ticks and still nothing.

Any help would be appreciated, should I just return it? What can I do?

Computer Sluggish After Installing ScriptLogic's Desktop Authority?

Aug 11, 2011

I recently installed ScriptLogic's Desktop Authority on my work computer (Windows 7 Professional 64-bit) thinking that it would help me with some stuff that I am doing here. Immediately after installing the product, my computer became super slow on the most simple tasks. Booting up and logging in now takes 10 minutes or more when it took only a couple minutes previously. Opening a program (mostly MS Office programs & IE, but not limited to) takes forever and appears to freeze at first. Installing a program takes minutes longer to simply show the initial install screen. Saving a file is also prolonged. Even opening a new tab in IE freezes the program up for a minute! It seems that most network related tasks are the ones effected. However Google Chrome and Firefox don't seem to be effected.

I've since removed the program which didn't make a difference. I've even started Windows in the minimal configuration via msconfig and it's still slow!!! WTF? I don't get it. I don't see anything in the Event Viewer to denote a problem. I just don't understand it. I'm at the point where I'm thinking I'll have to wipe and re-install Windows!

Mouse Sluggish For Short While Whenever Document Or Website Loads?

Mar 22, 2012

Often when I open a web page in any of my browsers, or a document in e.g. MS Word or Excel, or any file in its associated program, or sometimes even simply a new Explorer window, the mouse becomes sluggish for a few seconds, and in many cases I can hear the hard drive starting up for a second or two as well.I get the impression that the sluggish mouse problem occurs when Windows has to load something or render something new or check something "in the background" while I wait. But wait... it gets weirder: whenever my mouse becomes sluggish like that, the mouse usually overlaps the program that is opening a file, and if I can get my mouse away from that program, the mouse suddenly gets more responsive. This sluggishness also occurs immediately after I've created a new file or folder, or after I've renamed a file or folder.

Computer Acting Choppy And Sluggish After Closing Games

Aug 28, 2012

As of maybe a month or two ago my computer has been acting rather strange. The first thing I noticed is that now whenever I need to restart my computer (for updates, ect.) the screen will flash for a few seconds, return to normal, flash for another second or two, and then properly restart. Then a few weeks after that, I noticed my computer having trouble when I play games on my comp (I built my comp originally as a gaming rig).

After exiting games like Minecraft, Red Orchestra 2, Total War, or any of the other games I play, my computer will act sluggish for a few minutes after they close. It generally takes a minute or two until my comp seems to be back up to speed. Another thing is that my computer seems to have a difficult time closing my games, especially Red Orchestra 2. When I exit RO2 my comp will sit there at the game screen as if its frozen (I can't move my mouse or anything) and then finally exit the game.

Then, after exiting the game my comp screen will be all distorted and it will take another 10 seconds or so for the screen to return to normal. RO2 is definitely the worst when it comes to closing, all of the other games for the most part close fine, but my comp will still perform slowly after I exit any game. Normally, after I exited a game I could jump right in to my browser, start menu, or any other app if I wanted to.

CPU Spiking When Idle?

Apr 17, 2011

It seems that when I leave my laptop alone to go into sleep mode, the CPU keeps spiking at rather random intervals. Sometimes it spikes to 30% on one core just for a second.I have it set to dim display at 5 minutes, turn monitor off at 15 minutes, and to sleep at 20 minutes. It seems that just before the screen turns off, at about 14 minutes the BFE service and svchost.exe (defragsvc) take up about 50% of my CPU!!I have also seen the ssdp discovery service running and taking up some CPU power aswell? So far I have run a full scan of Microsoft security essentials, Malwarebytes anti malware, and Spybot search and destroy, none have found anything at all. Before the reformat I haven't experienced anything like these spikes. I don't know if that's because I haven't been paying attention to it this much, or if something has infected me, or if something is wrong with my windows 7 installation...

BSOD Only When Idle

Mar 20, 2012

This has been with me for a long time (can't remember how long) must have been about 2 years now. Just decided to try to solve it. When I'm using the computer, everything is fine. My video card is pretty old. When playing some games, sometimes the game crashes (and I get a notification about how my graphics sucks), but no BSOD. I haven't really exhaustively tested, but I think I've used it for 10 hours straight without any problems. The problem comes when I leave it alone (10-30 minutes.. I haven't seen it alive beyond 30 minutes of idle), even if its downloading something or running an antivirus scan. I have been able to run a full scan at startup (before windows loads), which took about an hour, with no problems. I used windows update to install all the latest updates (from windows). I have hibernate disabled and no screensavers, no standby after x minutes/hours. I do sometimes put it to sleep from time to time and there are usually no problems.
