System Idle Process Taking Up 75 Percent Of CPU Usage
Dec 6, 2011
I recently installed some new hardware into my computer.
Specs:
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD4
i5 2500k @ 4.5GHz
HyperX DDR3 1600
2x HD5870s
PC P&C 750W PSU
Crucial M4 64GB SSD (for my OS)
Everything went fine, computer performs top notch. But I'm having several issues (note, these issues happened BEFORE the CPU overclock also, so that isn't the problem).
1. Randomly (doesn't happen often), my computer will seem to lose internet connection. I'm hard wired right to my Linksys E3000, and it says that I'm connected, but no internet sites will load. Also, I cannot open the "network and sharing center". It just won't let me click on the icon in the task bar. And my CPU usage hovers around 25-30% when this happens. I downloaded and installed Process Explorer to see what the culprit was, and I noticed that of the 30% CPU usage, "System Idle Process" was taking up 75% of said CPU usage. It doesn't happen often at all, and restarting clears the problem up. But even though this SSD is lightning fast.
2. Smaller problem, but sometimes when I want to shutdown or restart, my computer just wont. It will sit at the "shutting down" screen forever and will basically do nothing, like there is a process in the background preventing it from doing its thing.

Some days ago I noticed after a couple of minutes I start mi PC, my CPU usage goes to a constant 100% , so I checked for viruses and such but MSE gave me nothing and neither Malwarebytes. Here's the weird thing, I checked the Task Manager to see witch process was causing this and it's always a different process (Sometimes MsMpEng.exe, sometimes dwm.exe and even taskmgr.exe itself) so I started killing processes like a maniac leaving just the few essential ones but nothing changed. I also stopped all the services with a delayed start, since the problem starts after a couple of minutes but the problem was still there. My system restore is disabled.

I have win 7 64 bit and have noticed that once my PC is active for more than a few days, the idle memory usage goes up dramatically. See pic, even with only idle processes, i am using 49% of 4gb ram. When i resart my PC, idle memory usage goes down to around 25%, which is a much more sane number. I've tried using a memory cleaning program called "CleanMem", but it doesn't seem to do anything.....

For the past week the System idle process has been hogging all my CPU. Have done the usual investigative routes, scans, safe mode scans etc. I have used my residential products: Malwarebytes, Superanti-spyware, Eset SS5 and have tried a couple of others being Hitman pro and Kaspersky on-line virus scanner. Since the problem started I have been trying to think of any odd installations but nothing springs to mind, to that end I have already put two different OS's on the machine and the problem still exists even in safe mode! I'm Running Win 7 x64.

Today I've turned computer on, and when Windows loaded, I saw that CPU load of my computer is 25-35 % and is caused by "System Idle process". Ok, I know that this process works when computer does nothing, but I've noticed one important thing - until this process wasn't working on my laptop, PC was working on batteries up to 5 hours, now, when this in normal process is working, time on batteries is 2h 50 min (max)... How I can turn off that process? I've already reinstalled Windows, only because of that problem, and I was happy only 3 days, today, this process returned. I use Russian version of Windows. I also uploaded two screenshots, where you can see that "system idle process", I've marked it (Screenshot nr.2) [URL].
System:
Acer 5750G
I5-2430M 2.4Ghz
8Gb DDR3 1333Mhz
NVidia GT540M 2GB
750GB HDD
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1.

In the last 2 days when I start my Win 7 Pro x64 PC I have a problem. After the Welcome screen goes I get a blue screen (Not BSOD) with my cursor in the centre and my Windows 7 title in the bottom right-hand corner. This lasts for about 90 seconds then Windows starts up. I pressed Control, Alt and Delete whilst the blue screen was up and selected Task Manager. The only Process running was System Idle Process. I thgought it was only supposed to run when the system was idle not starting up. I know Windows will not allow you to stop the process but what is causing it to run. My computer is normally a fast start-up - about 32 seconds, but suddenly this. What have I done to my dream machine (12 gb of Ram, 5 hard-drives)?

I'm experiencing very annoying issue. CPU loaded with System Idle Process always. Because of that there is serious lag in iterfase. Problem appeared almost sumultaniusly on there different PCs. Using "Process Explorer" and going to System Idle Process - Threads I've found processes with names: ntoskrnl.exe!KiDespatch Interrupt+0x650 (on one PC) or ntoskrnl.exe!KiCpuId+0x6a0 (on two others)
I have three diffenent machines - one old acer laptop, one modern desktop and wmware virtual machine running on macbook. All have same OS - win 7 ultimate sp1. All of them are in the same network.
I've tried to localise issue by removing services and applications from startup - nothing, I've scanned machines with microsoft security essentials, Dr Web CureIT and Kaskpersky virus removal tool. Still nothing.
CPU get loaded as soon as system starts. Number of ntoskrnl.exe instances equals to number of CPU kernels. 1, 2 and 8 in my case on different PCs .

I have Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit with 6 GB of Ram and SSD. After restarting the comp, the memory use is around 23% (of 6 GB). After working on it for a while, running browsers, spreadsheets, playing a game the memory use just pretty high (with just a few browsers open and Football Manager around 80%).
However, the problem begins when I close all the programs, essentially going to fresh, post restart state. In this idle state, the memory use if just over 60%. This obviously seems wrong. This is over 60% use of physical memory. What is the issue here, memory leak or something else. Occasionally, when I have a bunch of things opened, the computer will hang because the memory use is at the peak.

My computer is running all the time over 50%. AMD 4x, W764, 2x hd 1 tb, ram 8 gb. MS Office, CS5, acrobat, pinnacle, etc. I have Avast and MS Defender. I have made twice online scanning with Fsecure and AVG. I have made weekly scanning with System Mechanic, CCleaner, Adware and Spybot. Nothing serious found ever. This problem came when I changed the system hd (C:) 40 Gb -> 1000 Gb and reinstalled W7. Now the Hd (C:) runs all the time, but what? I stopped all Adobe programs (Photoshop / Acrobat) and this decreased cpu usage to about 40-60%. When only 2 services was running (Avast and CatalystContrCentr) cpu runs still too much 10-30%. I made a repair W7 installation, but nothing better.

Computer has been running slow, so this is what I come across: the Memory is Pegged at almost 100% usage. I've got 4 gigs and this is what it looks like right after startup. I also went into Norton and checked it and apparently my Ram has been like this almost for a month. (I got an SSD and did a clean install and it appears to have run ok for a few days and then you can see its pegged out.

My Mom has an HP laptop. She recently purchased a new HP printer and I have been trying for the last 4 days to get it to install/connect. I've been in touch with HP but the links they provide aren't resolving the issues. First, using the CD that came with the printer: hangs up at around 85-90%. It doesn't not show up as installed. I copied the CD to the desktop, modified Setup.exe in CFFExplorer and Run as Administrator and it appears to completely install; however, when I go to Device Manager, it says no driver is found.
I sometimes have the option to update and sometimes that seems to work but I can't access it through Add a Printer (which has the green bar run across the top, then pulsate and freeze). Trying to install using the driver I download from HP results in no installing screen appearing but it does hang up in the background and the only way to stop it is to Restart. The same thing happens if I try to use HPs Wizard. I've installed several HP printers through the years and not had this much trouble. That doesn't even include the dozens of times I've had to reinstall my own HP printer because of its contrariness!
Additionally, attempts to uninstall the old printer results in it hanging up/freezing soon in to the process, whether I try to uninstall from the Start menu, file or Uninstall program. I'm not even being able to get the Windows Updates to install - that process also just hangs up/freezes. I've not checked her machine in a while so there are many updates; however, when I just choose 1 at a time, it still sits at 0% and never moves. The printer, when connected, is with the USB and I've tried all 4 USB ports on this just in case. Am still in touch with HP but they are sending me the usual links so I'm hoping perhaps someone here can think of something a little less ordinary!

When idle, my cpu usage is around 20%, which is allot more than it should be in my opinion. Whenever I start a game, Battlefield : Bad Company 2 which is the game I've been playing allot lately, my cpu usage doesnt come down from the 90's %. It just stays there and it often goes to 99% and stays there, once again. I've been running the game at a 20 fps average. When I could run games like far cry 2, cod mw , nfs shift and so on with settings on high with an average of 40 fps.

I've reinstall my Windows 7. But now i don't know the reason why my CPU always show that 100% CPU, even when starting! I've found that in window task manager there are three processes: cmd.exe, cmd.exe*32 and again, cmd.exe, (I don't run them) and if I end them CPU usage will be normal.

I have just recently upgraded my OS to Windows 7 Home Premium x64 from Vista Home Premium x64 using the Toshiba Windows 7 Laptop Upgrade. I've actually had the choice to upgrade ever since I got the disk around two months ago, but only now did I have enough time to spare to upgrade the system. Anyway, after upgrading to Windows 7, I noticed that my system was noticeably slower than usual. I could open several tabs on Chrome while running other programs on Vista and I would barely lag.
Now, I'm having problems only with a few programs running. I also noticed that my CPU usage was stuck at 100% and it's not going down or anything. My laptop isn't as slow as a rock right now, but something should be causing the processors to be at a constant 100%. My RAM usage is normal. 4 Gigs being used at around 50% right now. I'm just worried that maybe some programs that I had with Vista are slowing down the computer, but I was sure to uninstall or update any incompatible software too.
I'm running on a Core 2 Duo T6500 (2.1Ghz) Processor with 4.00 Gb of RAM. My laptop is around six months old right now.

When I don't touch my computer for a while, I get CPU 100% (or CPU 50% on this dual core). As soon as I touch the mouse, in one second the culprit escapes. I know it's something under svchost.exe and I know I could see which svchost with Process Explorer or Svchost Viewer. But since the whole process disappears as soon as I touch mouse, it's pretty difficult to pinpoint. Svchost Viewer doesn't list all the processes in one screen, scrolling is needed. So it's basically always hidden and I can't scroll to it as that kills the process. How do I find out what exact process inside svchost.exe is eating my CPU during idle? My goal is to prevent the offending process altogether from starting.By the way, which settings of Windows Defender can cause this CPU 100% on idle problem, I didn't yet try shutting down all the settings there.

I can be in MS Word, After Effects, Surfing or ANY OTHER PROGRAM, and not click out, but be just working away and all the sudden SOMETHING (your part) causes my active window/program to go like it was a background process. could be in the middle of typing an email, and in the middle of a word and I can get half of it typed and then... BOOM! I'm out. The program DOES NOT close, it just acts like I clicked away to the desktop or another program.
Then I have to click back on my email and can resume typing for a bit. This happens every 5 minutes or so (haven't timed it). When it clicks itself out, it doesn't really go anywhere that I can tell, but something is definitely making my active window/program become inactive. I'm assuming it's some background process, but I don't see anything pop-up or blink or give me ANY indication at all that it has taken the active position.
I'm not sure how to even phrase this question since I don't know what is really going on. But it's driving me crazy in my video editing program (Premiere) especially since I'm in it about 15 hours a day. So it's happening, as you can imagine, 5-10 times an hour during my playack.
In fact, just at this very moment it did it again while writing here. My Chrome page became inactive and I had to reclick right here to continue writing.
I've had probably 50 computers since Windows 98 and I've never seen this before. And of course this has to happen on my big edit monster that I'm on all day. The system is a dual Xeon x5680, overclocked to 4.5Gzh, with 48 GB ram. I'm running on a EVGA SR-2 motherboard running the latest bios (as of 2 months ago). Runs like a beast in everything, very stable, just this annoying problem that keeps surfacing all the time. I'm running Win 7 Ult 64.

I have the same problem on my HP laptop, suddenly all system freezes and I cannot do anything except hold shut down button. I have monitored my CPU performance on startup and it goes crazy when my avast anti-virus is updating almost about 70% of cpu usage.
Technical details: Celeron Dual-Core CPU T3100 @ 1.90 GHz, 3gb ram, Mobile intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family
I haven't done anything with programs, have run ccleaner few times, also Disk Clean up and defragmenter. Scanned with the same avast scanner and Trend Micro House call, everything was fine. But never done any cleaning in 'fan' region.

My Win 7 Acer RAM (3GB) is running at 46% idle? This seems to be alot?
Though it does not increase that much with windows open, even when I open WMP and play music it only goes up to 49-50%.
I use the gadget on screen and double check it with task manager, they are the same.
This is more than the previous Vista Basic machine, which I returned, it ran at 40%?
Is there a way to adjust or sort this?
Oh, this morning it went up 99% and I could not switch it off, I had to hold the button to switch off?

I want to run Folding at Home (FAH), but I don't want the FAH process to take up 100% of my CPU (6 core, 3.7Ghz) because it runs really loud and I don't want it to burn out the CPU and fan. Is there any programs I can schedule to run at login and silently limit it in the background? I found the program BES, but you have to re-configure which process to target every time you log in. I know I can change the Affinity of the process, but running BES at 50% runs a LOT quieter than running half the cores.
