Get The Prompt "do You Want To Import Your Files"

Jan 3, 2012

When I boot up into windows, I get the prompt "do you want to import your files, view your files, etc for all my hard drives. Why is windows looking at all my hard drives when it should only be looking to see if I have a dvd or cd in my floppy or attached usb to a drive, or card reader if it has a card in it? This shouldn't come up at all. I get 7 prompts when I go into windows for all my drives?

Way To Import Old Address Book And Message Files

Jul 16, 2011

A friend has a new computer with Windows 7 Home premium. There is a complete backup (the old hard drive, actually ) from his old Win XP system; We cannot seem to find a way to import his old address book and message files. I had hoper we could implement a successful import to Mozilla Thunderbird, but have no luck so far.Since the mobo of his old computer failed, the data on his hard drive is the only source of this information. I had encouraged him to use Thunderbird, If he had this problem would have been easily solved since Tbird is very transportable, but he chose to continue using OE.I tried a search for dbx and wab files. I know OE had been working on his old computer and he had an address book and message folders.

I'm getting a new PC with W/7 pro and want to import blocked senders, WAB, & iaf files into Windows Mail from my current XP pro OE.I have searched many areas for this info to no avail. I am not interested in any form of web mail, just plain pop3/smtp email that will allow me to easily import above files and allow me to send email links from browsers and email files at the folder level with a file mgr. This is the best I can do as to sys specs as I will be picking up my new PC fri 8-3-2012:

Command Prompt To Register Ocx Files?

Jun 23, 2009

I have worked out that I can drag and drop the location to a command window opened with admin rights. Very useful.

However, this my cmd prompt window and pathname which looks correct: [URL] but I still get this error [URL]

Would add that I am registering a program from Win98 here. However is worked perfectly in XP and so I thought it might also do so in Win 7.

All Exe Files Open With Command Prompt?

Dec 16, 2011

I was trying to fix an issue where .exe files would not open at all. The person who answered my question gave a link to a Kioskea tutorial, which I followed and while it did fix the issue, it brought up a new one: All .exe files open with Command Prompt, so I have to type the filename itself before it will open.

Showing Hidden Files Using Command Prompt?

Aug 3, 2012

I can show hidden files using the 'Tools, Folder Options, View' path, but I was just wondering if anyone knows of a way to do this with a single action e.g. with the command prompt. My web searches only turn up ways to change the attributes of individual files/folders. It's not really a problem, I'm just looking for a shortcut :)

Extracting Files From An Executable With The Command Prompt?

Sep 23, 2010

I have what I thought should be a relatively straightforward question: What do I type in the command prompt in Windows 7 to extract all the files from inside an .exe? I remember doing it once a long while back, but I forgot how and Google is being especially unhelpful. One result instructed me to navigate to the file's location and type:

filename.exe /A /P C:destinationfolder

but that didn't work. I assumed it was for an older Windows version. Google got its hit from a comment saying it didn't work on Windows 7...

Picture Import

Sep 17, 2009

I absolute dont like the way Win 7 behaves, when connecting a camera.

In XP, I could choose which pictures to import, and give them names, and XP would number them for me, for instance import into C:Pictures2009, and the pictures would be named 2009 001.jpg and so on.

Now I dont understand how to do it, and if I have imported some pictures, I'm not allowed to do it again. WHAT???

Why should Windows 7 decide if I can import my pictures again, what if I delete a picture by mistake?

Is there a way to make it work like in "the good old days"?

Run Administrative Command Prompt From Command Prompt

Jul 22, 2011

Ok So I got myself into a unique bind here. I was trying to install some custom system files (for a theme) and I did it wrong and now I cant open explorer.exe . I dont want to goto a backup because this is a easy fix. (in my view). So I need to know how to run command prompt with administrative privleges from command prompt.

I am trying to do this command: copy explorer.exe C:Windows

So if there is also another command I can just tack onto that that gives me admin rights to do it. I would be happy.

Can't Import/open Pst - Says No Premissions

Oct 25, 2009

I backed up all files to an external hard drive. Had Windows 7 installed, and have tried a number of ways to import or open the data file/ pst back into Outlook 2003. I was getting a lot of 'it can't find the file' to now 'that I don't have the permissions to open it'.

I have no passord on my pc - took it off to see if that would work. Didn't help. I moved it under my user name to see if that would help. It hasn't. Please...any suggestions as my downloads etc for Security software, other downloads, are stored in my email folders.

No Video Or Sound Import From WM6.1

Apr 26, 2009

I tried the other night to import some holiday movies and soundclips into Windows 7. The device I used to capture the data was a samsung omnia running windows 6.1, and the sound clips were recorded as MP3 and .wav files.

The Video is a wmp (wave) file.

When I double click, the WMP booted up for the video and then nothing.

I restarted, and tried again. this time, the blue progress circle spun but nothing else happened.

At some point there was a codec error message.

I still find it difficult to think that at least they would have tried to make their own systems work with each other, even at beta! (hotmail is rubbish on WM, yu'd hav thought that there'd be a mobile version). Can anyone shed some light on this?

I am not sure if this is why I am unable to import my mail.

Can Only Import New Pictures Be Overridden?

Aug 29, 2011

I have a couple of different (make) cameras and on my old computer with XP I imported them to the computer using the software that came with each camera. Since getting the new computer with Windows 7 I haven't bothered to load the various software and chose to use the Windows importer. However, I just realized that when I do it this way the Windows importer default setting is to (rename) renumber them starting at 1 with each new import and put them into a new folder by date. Having realized this, I changed the import settings to keep the original camera file number. I then removed those imported pictures to the recycle bin.

Next I attempted to import the pictures once again from my camera using the new setting. However, the computer won't allow it, saying there are no pictures detected in the device. The default setting is to only import new pictures. How/where to override the 'only import new pictures' setting in the computer so I can import my pictures a second time? There are a lot and retrieving them from the recycle bin and renaming them all is going to be a lot of time-consuming work that I don't want to tackle unless it is the only option.

Import Pictures Wizard

Aug 31, 2009

I'm having trouble with the importing pictures wizard which I tend to use for simplicity and ease of use.

In XP, I used to be able to select which pictures I wanted to import from my camera card but now I cannot find how to do so and so I need to download all of them together meaning that I may need to run the wizard several times if I have different subjects on the one card and then go back to delete the photos wrongly named.

Second issue is that it will not close without forcing a closure from Taks Manager.

Is it me or is it a prolem with 7?

I'm currently running build 7100.

Import XP Sound Scheme

Nov 24, 2009

For many years now I've had a custom sound scheme where every event caused a different carefully chosen .wav from "2001: A Space Odyssey" to play. For example, Critical Stop would cause Hal to say "Just a moment", a new IM would have Hal say "there is a message for you" , when the system is shutting down Hal will say " I know that you and Frank have been planning to disconnect me and that's something I just can't allow to happen" , etc. (BTW, anyone who wants the set of .wav files please let me know).

Now, I could, of course, tediously compare all the settings from XP and duplicate them in Windows 7. But, that would not be elegant. I'm trying to figure out if the registry settings for sound schemes in XP are compatible with Windows 7, and if so, where are they in Windows 7?
