Destination Folder Becomes A Hidden System Folder
Jun 9, 2012I've created a batch file containing the xcopy command to copy the entire partitioned drive to a folder on an external hard drive.However, when it is executed it works fine but the destination folder, called Backup, becomes a hidden system folder. Does any one know why this is the happening.I'm performing the xcopy on my parents computer, which is on Windows 7.

Jul 4, 2011Earlier today I was trying to find some files in my Users folder which contained both the folders "Public" and "Home." I couldn't find the files I was looking for in either of those two folders. I right-clicked on the Home folder, and then clicked on Properties, thinking that the files I was looking for were hidden. I didn't realize that once I clicked on the "hidden" option that my home folder would be hidden; I brain farted and thought that function allowing me to view hidden files. I realized my mistake a few minutes later.

Jul 18, 2009I had a virus, which I deleted with Spybot S&D and Eset Nod32 antivirus (it may not have been removed completely). For now the infected PC is not connected to the internet.
I found the virus and started scan by looking into msconfig. I saw two objects:

The program files folder is hidden by the virus, you go to C: and it is not there. What can I do about it?? Its not hidden through the standard windows hidden files (I have showing of hidden files enabled, and I still cannot see it).
I tried combofix but it doesn't work for OS higher then XP, how can I restore my Program Files folder??
The Program Files is still there (programs that are installed there are working, and you can find things there through search in start menu, but you cannot see the folder itself).

Apr 8, 2012A folder has disappeared from an external hard drive, as confirmed by plugging it into another computer and checking, searching for several filenames it should contain on all possible drives (with hidden files shown), and searches with Recuva and testdisk of deleted files. There is no discrepancy between the size of the remaining folders and the reported size of the folder that contained it along with the remaining folders.
The drive in question is a 2TB WD Mybook external that may be showing its age- another folder had a cyclic redundancy check error, and the folder in question developed one several weeks later. I'm making plans to move my data off and have already duplicated the most important files on it.When the folder developed the CRC error mentioned in the previous paragraph, I ran scandisk. It was after running that utility that I found it had disappeared, so that is the most likely reason. However, the other folder remained (with error unfixed, eventually resolved by using testdisk to copy the folder to another drive.)
Accidentally Applied Hidden Folder Attribute, Subsequent Errors
Aug 23, 2010I was clicking around in my C drive because I was trying to find a folder that was hidden. I right clicked, click properties, selected the "hidden" folder attribute to the administrator folder, and clicked apply to all folders, subfolders, etc. I realized this was not the right thing because it just hid all the folders inside, so I undid it.Afterwards, it kicked me off of skype and when I tried to log on again, it said my disk was full when it is obviously not and gave me the "disk i/o error"In addition, I clicked firefox and it gave me a dialog box that said "Could not initialize the browser security component, etc etc and gave me another warning about my disk being full.What did I do? Obviously my disk is not full but these two programs think it is full and is giving me error messages.

(it's to fix an issue with the game Dead Space 2) Anyway, I opened My Computer, then C drive, then Users. In here, I right clicked on empty space and opened properties. I checked 'Hidden' and apply. Said it needed administrator rights, I accepted. Then most desktop items disappeared, most files from my documents disappeared and after reboot, The ATI catalyst control centre is popping up an error message saying 'failed to start'.I realised I chose to hide all the files within that folder instead of showing hidden files/folders..I went to folder options and chose Show Hidden file and I can see them again but they have that see through look to them. ATI catalyst still won't start on reboot. I tried system restore to yesterday but still exact same.When I go to User Properties on the C drive again, it shows the files as Read Only and Hidden is unchecked.

Sep 11, 2011Some of my important system files are no longer hidden and I can't hide them even with the Command Prompt "attrib" command. Files such as bootmgr and ntldr are shown and I can't hide them. Also, show Protected System files is unchecked and show hidden files is also unchecked so they shouldn't be showing. I tried to re-add their system file attribute but I keep getting an "Access Denied" error in CMD and I do not have user account control on and I'm on a Default Administrator Account.

Sep 24, 2012I was using my desktop like normal then an error came up saying that there was a hdd failure, and that i needed to scan for errors. all my files disappeared and only this error would come up. There would be hundreds of the same msg spamed on my screen. I scaned my hdd for errors using my Bios/Advanced options and no errors came up. I decided to take out the hdd and put it into my External Hdd bay to hook up to my laptop to extract the data off it.When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.
Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.so then when i click on my second internal drive after the reinstall of the new OS it shows empty i have to go in and show hidden files and folders.. now they show again transparent. also i plug in my external to get the recent back up and all those files are still transparent when i move them to my desktop that is freshly OS installed they are still grey/transparent and i have to keep the show hidden files and folders to view them.. so its all my music, pics, documents etc they are all greyed out..i tried to copy my backup IE favs into my new IE browser and they wont show up because they are hiden it shows it copied to the favs folder but in ie i cannot view them if that makes any sense.

It gave me a message that changes will come to effect after restart the machine, which I did. Jun 13, 2011Running TSG SysInfo would be useless, because I am having to make the inquiry from an entirely different computer.The computer in question, however, is a Dell Inspiron desktop, running Windows 7. Five or six months ago, in setting my then-new Dell computer I evidently responded to a prompt by creating a bootup password, with an accompanying Hint. But through those months the computer never asked for the password, <b>until two days ago</b>. It prompted me with "wherehus", (the "hus" being "husband", referring to me) which I believe to be a truncated version of the hint I set up originally. It now suddenly wants the password. and why that change and why the hint is truncated, I have no idea. I apparently never wrote down what the password should be, like a natural-born fool.That hint had to continue with something like BORN, EDUCATED, SERVED IN ARMY, MARRIED, and the like. "BORN" could be Rochester, or Rochester Minnesota, or St. Mary's or St.Mary's Hospital or something like that. If it was "ARMY", the password would surely be Germany. And so on with names of grade and high school, university, or private business school, many of them having several possible "answers", as above. And maybe some other "wheres" that I can't think of. Of course any of those would be subject to capitalization, spacing, and/or punctuation. A password wilderness.I've worked over those possibilities exhaustively, and haven't struck the real password. I've more or less run dry with variations.That's not a technical problem that anyone could help with remotely, so I have to assume I am not going to come up with the password. And therein lies my present dilemma. I'm not asking for instructions in hacking the password back, as I know you won't do that. The computer came with Windows 7 installed, and I do have a brand-new, never-used, Windows 7 installation set, which I bought for a different computer but haven't installed because that computer doesn't have enough memory or hard drive space. Which leads me to a number of puzzlements:
1. Older versions of Windows, when installed, wiped out EVERYTHING on the hard drive, or at least left them irretrievable. I think I have heard that Windows 7 does not do that. Does anyone know?
If forced to it, I could live with a wiped-clean hard drive if that's what the new installation would do. I have or can get installation disks for the software, and recreating or retrieving the data from backups would be possible, though a pain in the neck.
2. But is it even going to be possible to install the new Windows 7, with or without the hard drive contents? Since I can't boot up, how can I run the Windows 7 installation CD(s)?
3. Where, if anyone knows, is the password stored? If it's in some semipermanent memory in the computer rather than on the hard disk, might I be stuck with that unknown password even after a new Windows 7 install?
4. Or even if I installed a different new hard drive and managed to install Windows 7, would I still be stuck?
