Download Vista Updates Before Installing Windows 7?

Oct 15, 2011

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit OEM (with free Windows 7 upgrade). I want to reformat the computer. After installing Vista, do I need to download Vista updates, before installing Windows 7? Or just immediately install Windows 7 after Vista? Also, how often do you do a fresh install (reformat)?

Upgrading Vista To Windows 7 Without Installing Vista First?

Mar 23, 2012

I have a legitimate copy of Windows Vista with key codes etc and I have a legitimate upgrade disk for Windows 7. I had Windows 7 installed on a previous system build which had a HD crash and now I am starting again from scratch (wiyh backed up data).

Like a dolt, I installed Wondows 7 before I remembered it was an upgrade edition. I've looked all over the MS site and don't see a method I can use to Activate Windows 7 from this point. way to use my legitimate Windows disks and keys without having to wipe the drive, install Vista and then install Windows 7 yet again.

It's aggravating to have legitimate software and not be able to use it without needing to trick the system - surely there is a way to not have to start all over?

Windows notifies me that there are updates available. When I select to install the updates it takes a long time and I get a message stating that windows has detected that my computer is running on battery power and to plug my computer into an outlet.I get this message even when my computer is plugged into an AC outlet at the beginnig of the update dowload attept. What could be the problem? I had to have Windows 7 reinstalled on my computer by someone at a local charitable company but I've noticed little weird things that didn't happen when I had my original version.Internet sessions closing suddenly and cursor skipping around the page eventhough I updated my touchpad drivers.

Installing All Windows Updates At The Same Time On A New PC?

Sep 14, 2012

I'm rebuilding my desktop PC with a fresh installation of Windows 7 x64.Upon first boot after installation, 3 updates automatically installed. After a reboot, I was informed that over 100 additional recommended updates (and quite a few optional updates) were ready to be installed.I chose to install all of the recommended and optional updates (except for the 39 international updates).During the Windows Update installation process, a Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center installation window appeared. When the progress bar got to about 75%, however, the following error dialog appeared underneath: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime LibraryThis application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way Presumably, the installation of the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center (and perhaps other items) failed to install; upon pressing the OK button, I was informed that 51 updates succeeded and 75 failed. Codes 800706BE 800706BA were mentioned.Upon reboot, another batch of updates (75?) installed; then the PC rebooted twice. At this point, Windows 7 appears to be completely installed and up to date. There are no new items in Windows Updates. However, the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center is nowhere to be found; I was able to download the installer and successfully install the product.

Windows 7 Update Keeps Installing The Same Updates Over And Over?

Windows 7 Hangs While Installing Updates?

Dec 15, 2011

Last night I received a message that Windows needed to download updates. There were seven of them, so I clicked on install. After downloading it said it had to restart to complete the installation. I then got the screen saying "Configuring Windows. Do Not Turn Off Your Computer." The little circle kept spinning for about a half hour. I saw that the HD light didn't come on at all, so I assumed it had locked up. I had to press and hold the power button to get it to reboot, and after telling me Windows did not shut down normally, it started up and appeared to complete the update installation.I checked the Update History and most of the updates said "Successful" but a few said "Pending". I have had this lockup happen before, but usually it installs with no problem. What can I do? What does Pending mean? I have Win 7 - 64 bt - Service Pack 1.

Sound Not Working After Installing Windows Updates?

Jan 26, 2012

So first I get this message when I mouse over the speaker icon(notice the red "x" on the icon). When I click the icon, Windows does a diagnostic and then this shows up.This is whats listed in my playback devices and this is with "Show disabled devices" enabled. Everything is enabled,Here is a picture of what my device manager looks like.

I've tried installing drivers for my sound card and my chipset, I tried restarting my computer, updated from my device manager, uninstalled drivers, reinstalled, etc. I've been searching online for a bit and nothing I found worked so I figured I'd give this a shot. I tried uninstalling the service pack update but that didn't work.

Why I say this now, is because ever since I updated windows 7, so the "downloading" has started and it never used to do this before.I have told windows to not start up apps like iTunes and Skype etc. But this hasnt had a effect. Is there anything else I can do to stop this?

Computer Freezing / Not Responding In Windows 7 After Installing Updates

Apr 27, 2012

My computer was working fine until I downloaded the windows service pack 1. First it was every now & then but soon my computer was freezing up ( not responding ) and it was impossible to even complete a document. This happens in all applications. I noticed with each new window update the worse my computer got. Still under warranty I spent hours on the phone with DELL twice, finally I did a fresh re-install of windows 7 professional. After the fresh install everything was fine. UNTIL I downloaded the windows updates, it started to 'not respond' again. I uninstalled the updates. The not responding issue is gone but I am concerned about windows security updates. Do I need them? I have contacted windows about this issue many times over the past several months with no response.

BSOD After Installing Nvidia Drivers And Windows Updates

Jan 30, 2012

I installed 285.62 P08 Nvidia Driver from the Dell webpage two days ago and it was fine and everything was good after the restart from the installation. After finishing up my session, I noticed that there is a window update so I shut down and left the computer to do the updating on it's own. Today, I switched on my computer to look at my timetable for today and after that put it to sleep mode.

After "waking" it up, I was met with a BSOD after like 5 minutes of use. I then decided to system restore to before i did the updates. It still BSOD albeit it took a longer time before that happened. Right now im using Safe mode + Networking to type this message out. (The computer does not seem to BSOD in safe mode so far). I did the steps listed but I could not get the perfmon step working. "An error occurred while attempting to generate the report".

Specs:
Windows 7 64bit
OEM
About 7 months old both hardware and the OS

I triggered a BSOD in normal mode:
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
STOP: 0x0000007A (0x0000000000000020, 0xFFFFFFFFC000009D, 0xFFFFFA800798E078, 0x0000000000000000)

Windows Updates Not Installing Properly (800B0100 + 80070643 + Others)

Jul 16, 2012

Just purchased a new MOBO and some other new hardware a couple of weeks ago. I am using the same Windows 7 Pro copy I had on my previous mobo and HD. After I installed Windows 7 Pro onto my SDD (with a HD as my secondary storage), I was getting BSOD and SP1 would not install (but other updates would prefectly fine). I re-installed (cleanly) Pro a couple of days ago. Now, barely any of the updates work. There are various failure codes, such as the ones in the title--and no distinct problem.

I was able to download some updates by only selecting 1-3 at a time. However, with 118 updates...I eventually lost my patience (plus, sometimes a few would still fail even at only 1-3 at a time).

The failure process at first was at the download stage - the progress would freeze randomly at 7% or whichever. After several more attempts it got through to the installation phase. Now installations randomly stop at a random file. Upon restart, Windows fails to configure updates and nothing is accomplished.

Now a weird thing is, that with some of my larger files (2+mb), I will sometimes see like 5.1mb - 10mb for the listed file size. Also, on my main Windows Update screen (the one which lists how many important and optional updates you can download), it says "79 important updates selected, 236.2 MB - 1,059.8 MB."

I have tried:
-FixIt
-Deleting all temp files
-Deleting DataStore

Random Specs:
Windows 7 Pro
ASUS P8Z77-V Pro
Samsung 830 64GB SSD

Installing 64bit Windows 7 On 32bit Vista

Dec 30, 2010

I am trying to install a 64bit Windows 7 on my 32bit Vista computer.. I have run the upgrade advisor thing and it said that it should all work... I bought a Family Pack with 3 upgrades and it has both a disc marked "32-bit software" and one marked "64-bit software". I want to get the 64bit windows 7 home premium so I inserted the disk and tried to run the Setup.exe but I get an error saying "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

I then tried to run the file as administrator and then get a different error saying E:setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

I have already installed 1 of my licences on another computer but then I installed a 32-bit Windows 7... I know I have to do a clean install to go from 32bit to 64bit but shouldn't the disc work on my 32bit system? :S
