Disable "hover To Select" Feature?
Jul 6, 2012
In various forums, including this one, I've seen users post questions about the same problem. But none of the solutions works on my Gateway laptop PC with Windows 7 and Elan pointing device. Here's the problem: My mousepad clicks without my clicking it.It has sent e-mails I wasn't ready to send, it has closed windows I didn't want closed, it selects text i didn't select and -- most infuriating -- it creates new insertion points in Microsoft Word documents wherever the cursor happens to be hovering (it does this when I pause typing momentarily. When I resume typing, the text is inserted in the different place in the document, usually in the middle of an already-completed paragraph.)

When I place the cursor over a Jpeg, a box appears with some data, i.e. format (jpeg), date modified and size. What I would like to do is be able to customize the data that is shown to say, date taken, size, dimensions and camera model. I can't find any way of changing this, even for pictures where full exif data is present. (I realise that if no exif data is present, only basic data can be shown). Also, when I click on a jpeg, a bar opens at the bottom of the window that gives loads of info, but only if you click in the bar and choose "large". Again, is there any way to be able to choose what data is shown, and hide data for other things. For instance, I have no use for star rating or tags, and would like to hide those attributes completely.

I've searched high and low for an answer on Google, but can't seem to find one. I don't think there's anything you can do about it, but here it goes.So on your XP desktop, when you hover over your desktop icons with your mouse, they don't light up. On 7, when you mouseover your desktop icons, a light blue box shows up around the icons indicating that you're over it.How on this huge planet of ours do you disable that hover effect?

I wanted to know if it was possible to remove the hoverpress highlight that appears on the icons on the desktop and in Windows Explorer. Here's a picture to show you what I mean. I did some searching and found there is no up front way to do this, as it requires modifying some (system) files. I am familiar with Resource Hacker and such;I just need to know which files to modify. And also, which resources (images and such) would need to be changed.

Mouse Hover Time - Change
I used the above tutorial to change the Mouse Hover Time in Windows 7. I changed it to 10000 ms via regedit, and restarted explorer. Soon after, it reverts to the normal Hover Time. It seems to revert randomly.
In regedit, the value is still the same.

what i could not find, though, was information on how to focus on windows by simply hovering over them with the mouse.
Back in XP, you could enable this with Tweak UI, which called it X-mouse.
It was great, i didn't have to click on a window to work in it.
but how to enable this in 7?
OPTION #1
As this article points out, you can switch windows by hovering if you enable it through:
Control Panel> Ease of Access> Change How Your Mouse Works
scroll down, check box "Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse"
this method raises windows to the front when you hover over them.
OPTION #2
For a true X-mouse experience, you could use this third party software TXMouse:
True X-Mouse Gizmo for Windows
if you are familiar with Linux x-mouse behaviour, you might appreciate its other functions.
OPTION #3
If you don't need those extra functions, you can make a couple swift changes in the registry and achieve the same effect:
Step #1:
Open regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop
Edit UserPreferenceMask value to be 9F 3E 07 80 12 00 00 00
[You should only have to modify the first pair]
Step #2:
Also in HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop
Edit ActiveWndTrkTimeout, change 'Base' to Decimal and put in 150 as the 'Value Data'
[this value is time in milliseconds that it takes for the focus to change.
to avoid some issues with the taskbar I recommended using a value like 150 or so,
but if you'd like to have a different delay before the window loses focus, set it to whatever you like.]
Step #3:
Log off and log back in
Information (Added by John Galt)
Here is the registry key to do that if you don't want to edit the registry yourself. Hover window select.reg
Here is the registry key to restore the default values. Default Windows hover.reg
this results in windows being active (but not being raised) when you hover over them.

I have just acquired a Toshiba netbook running Windows 7 Starter. When I allow the mouse pointer to hover on a clickable link, the link activates after a couple of seconds. This is really irritating if I am already where I want to be since I have to be careful where I park the pointer. How can I disable this function? Dannyboy42 asked the same question, and Frank4d suggested that he "go to Control Panel > Ease of Access Center > Make the mouse easer to use. Uncheck the box next to Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse". Unfortunately, that did not solve dannyboy42's problem, nor does it work for me - that box is already unchecked. Has anyone else figured this out, or is everyone OK with it, and I should just learn to live with this "enhancement"?

'The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available'. This is an error I get when I try to install the Games For Windows Live Marketplace onto my PC. From my understanding it may be because I am missing the Windows Installer Package .msi? Yet I cannot find a download that works with Windows 7... Is my assumption correct? Does anyone have a working link for Windows 7 64-bit? If not, what can I do about this irritating error that's stopping me from installing a fair few things. I also get messages whenever I install anything on steam, as, when it tries to mess with visual c+++ it tells me I am missing 'vc_red.msi' ...is this related?

HomeGroup is a new feature introduced by Windows 7 which aims to simplify the process of sharing content and devices on your home network. In older versions of Windows, sharing content was a tedious and sometimes painful process, especially for home users. By using HomeGroups, you can now access all shared content in your home network with just one click. I know it sounds to good to be true. That's why, in this article, I will show what a HomeGroup is, how it works, how to create one and join your home computers to it. Also, I'll show how to change the password of your HomeGroup and how to retrieve it in case you forgot it.

Libraries are one of the coolest features introduced by Windows 7. They can help people organize their files and folders very efficiently. By using libraries, you can easily build a system so that you can always find what you want in seconds. Not only that, but you can also sort, tag or edit files and folders with just a few clicks. In this article I will explain what libraries are, show how they work and how to create new ones. Also, I'll show how to add new folders to a library, how to modify its properties and how to delete a library.

I recall reading some time ago about a new feature in Windows 7 for user generated error reporting that would allow a user to record their desktop / take periodic screenshots while they replicated an error, which would then allow them to forward / email the report to someone who could offer help.
I can't seem to locate this feature in Windows 7 Ultimate, and i'm having trouble locating any articles talking about the feature.
Was it removed or am i not looking hard enough?

A week or two ago there was a considerable amount of confusion concerning the Anytime upgrade. The people on the phone at MS insist they must send you a DVD in the mail. Windows 7 replies all you need to do is pay and get a key. The book Windows 7 inside and out says the same thing, but when you try to do that, at least this is what happened last week, the web site fails.
I attribute this to the product being brand new and just one of the glitches that go along with a new roll out. Does anyone know if these issues have been clarified?
