I was wondering if i was the only one that had this problem. If a move or ad an icon or a file on my desktop and then later, maybe an hour or so, i reboot my computer, when it finishes to load, the icons i moved or added just go back to where they were. But if i log off and then on before rebooting it doesn't do this.
I move the icon to different location but it go back to old location when I refresh desktop. I have already turned off "Auto arrange icons" but the result is the same.
Recently my desktop icon placement has not been able to stay put if I do a desktop refresh or a computer reboot. I have looked at many internet hits on this same topic and no solution suggested has worked. I have done the IconCache.db thing where you can delete an existing file from the hidden. AppdataLocal directory and restart the explorer. There was no file there. Yes, I have show hidden files turned on. Restarting explorer doesn't work. Rebooting is supposed to re-create the file, but it doesn't.
Resetting the colors from 32 to 16 and back is supposed to rebuild the cache. It doesn't. Still no file there. After manually placing a few icons and refreshing the desktop, it is supposed to remember where they are, but it doesn't, they just fly back to where they were before manually moving them. This is getting to be very aggravating and frustrating. I don't know why this has started all of a sudden, and I cannot seem to find a solution from the many internet hits on the same topic.
Whenever I single left click on an icon, file, or folder a repetitive popup appears asking if I want to send whatever I clicked on to the recycle bin. The item is sent to the recycle bin regardless.
I used the tutorial to change what the default logon screen is, which is super awesome that it was so easy to change... but I was wondering if its easy to move the size/position of the user icon? Any info would be great!
Move Live Messenger Icon to the System Tray in Windows 7. If you've made the switch to Windows 7 and use Windows Live Messenger, you might have noticed the icon stays in the new Taskbar. If you are annoyed by this and would rather see it in the System Tray (notification area), just follow this simple process. Show Messenger Icon in Notification Area. When you close out or minimize Messenger it will reside in the new Taskbar. [URL]. To make it act like it did in previous versions of Windows, right-click on the Windows Live Messenger icon and go to Properties.
In the example above I created an icon on the desktop but you can also do the same thing with the icon in the start menu. Then go to the Compatibility tab and run it in Windows Vista compatibility mode. The icon might be hidden in the notification area though. You just need to customize the Notification Area Icons and have it Show icon and notifications. [URL]. Thats it! Now you have your Messenger icon back where it used to be. [URL].

I have a really annoying problem with desktop icons.I use 2 monitors. 1920x1200 is the main dislay and 1600x1200 is another one for extended desktop. The thing is that I don't need it all the time so I'd like to switch the extended desktop on and off when I need it. Problem is that entering the ex. desktop just somehow changes the grid (it seems that the grid becomes more compressed in vertical direction). That means that it always messes my icons up. I don't know why do the Windows change the grid when I do not change the resolution or just anything that could possibly affect the main screen.
I am able to copy and paste items onto my desktop. I can right click and create a new folder or text file on my desktop, I can move folders onto my desktop, but I can't move files from anywhere else on my hard drive to my desktop. Attempting to move a file to the desktop does not return any error, it just does not move from its location.
After that i found that i can't move any of my desktop icons. I don't know if there is a direct connection with the istallation of SP1.
Also i found that vlc doesn't properly. I have tried different version, but the problem is always the same: i can't move the video forward or back. I don't know if this problem too is connected with the istallation of the SP1..
Over the night I usually turn off my PSU, this morning, I turned it on, booted the pc normal, and the cursor wasn't moving on the desktop. The mouse itself, was lighten up, and ready to be used. I plugged the USB in and out, and everything were back normal.
I am having problems with moving the location of the desktop folder found in the users folder in my local drive where windows is stored to another partition. verytime I finish moving the location of the folder to another separate partition, it reverts back to the default location upon restart.I don't know what seems to be the problem, or if there is some registry fix to this
My desktop Icons are locked in place. I move them to desire position and when I REFRESH the desktop, they return to previous position. They also change size after a reboot.
1) I want to move Win 7 Home Premium from my desktop to my netbook.
2) I want to put Win 7 Professional on my desktop, hopefully without having to start from scratch.
I know if I buy Win 7 Pro, I can do an in-place upgrade on my desktop, but then my CD key for Home Premium may not work when I go to put it on my netbook? What do you think?
I don't recall any recent change before this issue, but everytime I start my computer, all my icons go to the left side of the screen. I temporarily downloaded a software to reset my icons when I start the computer, but I don't want to keep on having to go through this all the time. I tried the regedit...that didn't work. I tried right clicking the desktop and resetting them there...that doesn't work.
I create a folder on the desktop. I drag/drop all desktop icons/files into the folder. Reboot the machine. All icons are back on the desktop. The folder I created / filled is empty.

Like I said in the subject, the desktop icons rearrange themselves every other reboot. Not every time, but occasionally and quite often, often enough to annoy me.
I have a 30" screen 2560x1600 and I keep a lot of icons on the desktop. I have to keep arranging them.
All settings are configured correctly. In Personalize>Desktop Icons - auto arrange icons is unchecked. The OS restarts correctly so I'm not sure what is causing this problem, but it's getting on my nerves.
