Changing Network Name
Dec 1, 2009
I have 2 copies of Win 7 installed, one on my lappy, the other on my main pc.
My lappy can see all my files on the main pc and share the printer no probs.
However my main pc cannot influence my lappy, although it sees it on the network.
The only difference I can see in the settings is that my laapy network is named 'home' on the work network, and my main pc is part of a network called 'network' on work network.
I guess I need to change the name of the network to 'home' on the main pc but can't find the route to do it. Funny the lappy can see the main pc but not vice versa.
Any ideas folks?

Home network with Wifi and ethernet. Using 3x Notebooks and 3x workstations. One of the workstations (W7 ultimate) keeps changing between Public and Home. When this happens, the internet connection dies. I cannot see other workstations either when on public network. Workstation using wifi. Does the same on cable. When it changes to Public, it disconnects from the internet and I cannot get to the router even though it has the workstation has an IP(DHCP or static). Default gateway and subnet is correct. TCP v4 is being used and nothing else is enabled.
Why is this happening?
- I have tried DHCP as well as Static addresses
- Reconfigured NIC(Netgear WG311T), uninstalled and reinstalled it.
- Removed Wifi connection and re-added it.
- Changed auth type, encryption type and keys to connection
Have I covered everything? The only thing different is that I installed a new router - Duo Plus 300wr. It cannot be the router because all the other notebooks connect to it wireless and so does my iPad, Android device and tablet...so it rules that out?

One of the computer is windows 7 and the other XP SP3. Both computers have the same 4 user accounts. Win7 pc is set to share file/printer and public files with password. On the XP machine, I went to My Network Places, to the specific Workgroup, to the win7 computer, and folders. A windows dialog came up asking for user id and password. I put in an admin id and password on the win7 pc. Here is my problem. I realized I shouldn't be using that id. But, I can't find a way to change the id on the XP pc. I went to the user account, then manage my network passwords. But, there is no ID and PW

I recently leased out one of the offices in the building and I am providing the tenant Internet via my network. Is there any way that I can split the network such that my tenant cannot access my computers while my computers can talk to each other?I would like to do it with software if possible.

We have 30 computers all running XP, we are now due to replace them as they are 10 years old. Would I need to update my Server OS from SBS 2003 before installing Windows 7 on the clients ?
I know the proper procedure is to upgrade all tech together, back end through to front end, but would SBS 2003 handle and function at 100% ? If I go for an upgrade on the Server OS I would need to upgrade the server hardware to 64bit.

So, I have several different printers set up for different wireless networks that I connect to; the only problem is that Windows never refreshes or updates my default printer when I connect to a different wireless network.
If I go into the "Manage default printers" and click the network and printer combination (stored in the saved list below) and then click "Update" it will successfully update my default printer to the one it should be. However, that's kind of a pain to have to go through several menus just to update my default printer--it would be faster to do it the old-fashioned way (right click the printer and click "set as default printer").
Any ideas on why this isn't updating correctly--I haven't yet seen it update since setting up my default printers. Or, should this go in a different topic than Networking & Sharing?

I click on Devices and Printers. I right-click my Printer, then click Printing Preferences (it's a network printer). I change the Original Size to A4, then click apply. When I try to print, the Original Size is wrong! When I go back to my printer's preferences, my change is not there anymore.

I am on a network that contains both XP and Windows 7 computers. The problem at hand is on a Windows 7 computer (Computer 9). The XP computer is Computer 4. I succeeded in accessing Computer 4 from Computer 9 by typing my Computer 4 credentials into a window that popped up on Computer 9 the first time that I attempted to access Computer 4 from Computer 9. After that, the password on Computer 4 was changed. Now, when I try to access Computer 4 from Computer 9, I receive the following message: "Windows cannot access \COMPUTER 4..You do not have permission to access \COMPUTER-4. Contact your network administrator to request access." Can anyone please tell me how to access the pop-up window on Computer 9 that will let me type in the new Computer 4 password?

I have three different wireless networks I can connect to, but the one Windows connects to first by default is not my first choice. I'd like to reorder the connection priority. Problem is, as you can see, no networks show up in my manage networks control panel! It clear as day shows that there are five choices, but, does not list them for me to prioritize! Is there a setting somewhere I'm missing that will make the networks visible?

I accidentally took my laptop off the domain while installing a printer from a workgroup network, and placed the laptop on the workgroup, once restarted I cannot log in anymore, I am trying the password recovery tools to log into the administrator account. Is there a way for me to roll back the settings and have it back on the domain the way it was without being connected to the domain? And to get the user account back the way it was (basically just the network settings) so that I do not have to setup a new profile and migrate all the settings and programs?

I have been using my home internet in my new place for a couple of weeks fine, yesterday morning when I tried it it had the limited access yellow triangle and wouldnt connect.I reset the router and connected to the wifi on my iphone which worked fine, I checked the DNS numbers were the same as on my iphone which they were and I had not changed any settings. I spent the entire day yesterday online looking for solutions, Ive reset the adapter, disabled it etc, set the ip and dns to automatic and back again etc etc.
When my wifi tries to connect to my home internet it takes a LONG time to identify and then identifies it either as an unidentified network and/or public. Even when I change it to home it changes it back to public or just doesnt let me change it to home and says try again later.
Ps- I just tried disabling then re-enabling the protocol 6 on the wifi which isnt working and it just said in order to configure TCP/IP, you must install and enable a network adapter card. But then it just let me configure it and is still connected but with limited access and public network.

This all started whenever I wanted to change my text size different by changing my DPI settings. What I did was right click, go to screen resolution, and clicked on "Make text and other items larger or smaller". From this I changed it to 100% from 125%. I noticed it had changed my font size to the 100%. It then made everything SUPER small when I changed my theme settings.Whenever I right click and go into personalization settings, I do the usual customizing to my likings. Since I want to save the theme, I do so by naming it, blah. Now I want to use the blah theme by click on it, and I do so. Everything is fine and dandy until I right click my desktop to refresh(out of habit). This is the before and after of the font sizes.
Before
After
My workaround was to set a custom DPI setting, log off like it prompts me to, then changing it back to 100%, again prompting to do so. It is so annoying to do so.

Am I correct on thinking that no matter what version of software you are using if you want to go from 32 bit to 64 bit you have to do a clean install.

I just did a recent new build and have a SSD drive for my OS and some apps and a 1TB SATA drive for everything else. I installed windows and it installed it to C:, my SSD, but after thinking about it I believe it would be easier in the long run to have my OS/few apps on the SSD to be X: or something else since most apps/games default install to C:, which I want for my 1TB, so I won't have to edit it for every install. Will simply renaming the drive letter cause any problems (nothing installed now except ASUS MB drivers, EVGA drivers, and Firefox)?

I've decided to give my older laptop to a close family member. Since this computer was no longer used for business, no sensitive data is on the hard drive. The OS was upgraded to Win7 Home Premium from WinXP Pro SP3. My User Name was created and is still visible in CUsers, and I would like to change it to another entry. When this is attempted under User Accounts, Users"My User Name""New User Name" is the result. Is there any way of achieving Users"New User Name" without a clean install? I dread this option, since I would have to reinstall WinXP Pro then Win7 Premium Upgrade.

Ever since I changed to Win 7 my mp3 files will every once in a while will change to .TMP. I then have to change them back to mp3 by showing the extention and then editing the name to change it back. Why is it doing this? I have tried re-converting them to mp3 (dispite being mp3's) but it doesn't work.
Now, when I was volume leveling everything, 860 songs changed their extention to .TMP. Is there a way to get them back to mp3 without editing them one by one. And, again, why is it doing this.

I downloaded the IE9 update a couple of weeks ago, and since then I can't download anything from anywhere. I can't download files from the web, I can't download pictures that are attached in emails I receive in Hotmail or anything. If I click on anything that leads to a download, IE9 stops working and a pop-up message tells me the same. Then it shuts down all instances of IE, and restarts one browser.
I'm running Windows 7 (obviously) on a HP laptop.

So what i want to do is change my key functions on my keyboard (example: rather than ctrl-c i want to use command-c "aka windows-c")but i don't want to change the command key to be ctrl but make it so windows recognizes it as copy when i push command-c also want to change other stuff like ctrl-alt-del and paste and closing windows
the reason i don't want to change command to ctrl is if im in an application that i need to control i want to be able to hit the actual ctrl key.
i basically want to make my windows feel a little more like macintosh not in the way of looks but function of keys. hope it makes sense and hope someone knows how to do it.

Now I have a two and a half year old Toshiba L550 Satellite -i5 CPU (dual core x four threads) 8GB RAM and a Toshiba HDD that I have had no end of problems with and just lately blueys ad nauseum. Plus it is really quite slow.So I want to slip in an 80GB (and a 7OEM) as I don't use this laptop for much more than emails and here on SF and a couple of other forums. The only problem is I can only find an Intel 320 series SSD to fit the bill from my local (usual) supplier, and may have to go to a 120GB as an option.I have a Crucial M4 in my desky but am not totally happy with the speed when I read that folks are getting 10 - 15 second boots - mine is about 35 -40 seconds even though I keep as little as possible on it and use TRIM frequently. So am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on any other brands such as Sandisk, Samsung, Patriot, Kingston, Corsair, the Patriot though has Sandforce in its build and it seems to get some flak from some quarters.

I have a 64 gb ssd, which I use as the boot drive, and a 1tb hd I want use as a game/data drive. Most programs would ask where to install or you can choose a 'custom install.' However, there are a few which automatically start installing on the default/boot drive without making a user inquiry. This PC is my first build, but I'm thinking that boot problems are usually solved through bios, while program installations problems are solved through the OS. I've tried disk management, i.e. an unsuccessful attempt to change disk 0 to disk 1 and vice versa, but to no avail
