I just did a reformat and reinstall of Windows 7. During the installation process I noticed that there are two partitions other than the primary one: a recovery and an OEM partition. I already have a general idea of what both of these are used for. My question is: are these partitions vulnerable to infection?

I am using Windows 7 Pro and I've had it for a year and my computer is starting to run slow. I would like to reformat the HD and do a new install so it's will run fast again. Can I reformat the HD and reinstall Windows 7 using the same activation key? Or would I have to buy a new key?

I have a Lenovo ideaCenter K300 I bought in May. I want to reformat and reinstall in order to get a "factory-fresh" install of Windows 7. So far I have tried building a system repair disc. Other tutorials [here] said it would take 7 CDs, this only took one so I'm not sure I did the right thing. I restarted and ran the disc, it only looks to be a bunch of repair utilities.

I'm currently have 1 SSD for OS and 2 HDD in RAID1 for data, all connected to the same Intel controller on my EVGA X58 3x SLI motherboard. I'm planning to re-install Windows 7 x64 Pro on the SSD. While doing this, I would also like to reformat the 2 RAIDed HDD's. What are the steps that I need in order to reformat the RAID1?
My SATA mode is set to AHCI at the moment. If I set the SATA mode to RAID and I boot to Windows, I'll get BSOD after the Windows logo screen. I'm not having Intel Matrix Storage Manager installed. The last time I did so on my current OS (also Win 7 x64 Pro), I got some weird chkdsk error, in which I was given thousands of "Replacing invalid security id with default id ..." for files on the RAIDed drive.
I'm planning to reuse the same 2 HDD's for RAID1 after the reinstallation. I've already copied the current data on the RAIDed disks to some external USB source.

My laptop didn't come with an OS disk. I have 56GB out of 250, and honestly I don't know where it all went. Is there any way to reinstall without a disk? I'm not too big into torrenting things like this, but if its the only way I guess I would have to.

I recently bought a samsung NP-300V5A laptop for compsci at school, and picked it due to the fact that out of all the laptops at microcenter, this one was at a reasonable price with an i7 2670qm, however, coming from building 3 of my own very high end desktops (3930k w/ gtx 690 & ssd's) the 5400 rpm drive just was unbearable, so I went out and picked up a crucial M4, and replaced it. I also bought a copy of windows 7 home premium OEM and tried booting from that dvd, and it would not work, I just got a backlight loop, so I inserted the Samsung recovery install disc, and used it to install windows, worked just the same as any other win7 install, however, my internet is not working now, and my laptop's monitor/display is recognized as a generic nonPnP and won't go to its max resolution.

I have a laptop with a windows vista 32 bit OS and I want to change it to windows 7. But the dumb part was, I bought a window 7 premium upgrade version without knowing that it was a 64 bit. When I tried to run it, or even made it as an initial boot sequence, my OS did not recognized the cd. Is there something i can do to format my laptop, using only the cd I bought? The only cd's I could use were my xp home premium (which was the original OS of my laptop, because some IT formatted it before and changed it to vista 32 bit and made some full clean on my drives, deleting even my recovery files) and the window 7 premium 64 bit...

I am trying to install on an HP DV6-1063TX laptop computer.
I have runs upgrade adviser it reports 1 issue although I am not sure what it is,
In the System report I get two notices one about MS Mail & Web filtering and one suggesting a visit to HP website, everything else is green ticked so I don't think there are any serious problems here.
In the Devices section there is a ? againnst the HP DVB-T/Analog TV-Tuner but again all else is green ticked.
In the Software section I get a 'Yellow Triangle !' against Adobe Shockwave Player version 10.2.0.023, everything else has green ticks. The problem is that as far as I can see there should not be Adobe Shockwave version 10 as I have uninstalled not only this program but all the other Adobe software as well. I have tried updating to version 11.5, I have used Adobe's standalone uninstall tool for Shockwave but Windows 7 UGA insists it is still on the computer. I have run CCLeaner but all to no avail. Is this the problem?
On the first attempt I had a problem with HPs Keyboard Filter which I understand is related to the HP Quick Launch Button software, I have uninstalled the software and have upgraded to the latest version.
I have tried the installation 3 or 4 times now with the HP software upgraded or fully installed. Each time the installation goes through all the on-line checks, system checks, file expansion etc... only to find that it fails during the final stage. During the last attempt I had the upgraded Keyboard Filters installed and this again caused a problem so I am going to uninstall the upgraded software and try another install although I hold little hope for success.
The fact that the Windows 7 UGA reports a phantom Adobe Installation leads me to think the problem may be there but I have no idea how to solve this as it is not on the machine.
I would prefer to do the upgrade installation if possible as it will save many hours of software installation (after hours of time already wasted on Windows 7 installation), and I am worried that being a laptop Windows 7 may fail with some of the drivers it does not help that I cannot find this laptop on HPs website even though it was bought just over 12 months ago.
I really want to get rid of this Vista installation and hope that someone here can be of assistance, in the meantime I will be trying one more attempt to upgrade after uninstalling the HP Quick Launch Bitton software.

So my brother got a new vista laptop recently and it came with a paper saying he can upgrade to Windows 7 for free.
So i go on HP's site (he got a pavilion), and i come across the page where i place my order. But then i find this:
It says it costs 30 euros! I thought it was meant to be free!? 30 euros isn't much anyway but thats not the problem, my problem is also that i cant pay online because i don't have paypal or a credit card!
Isnt it meant to be free? Or is that the shipping cost?

I have been working with another tech in the spyware/malware forum to try and rid my computer of viruses and spyware/malware. We found that the main culprit was TDL 3 and have been able to successfully remove that, however the technician feels that my computer security has been comprimised and is recommending that I reformat the computer. I cannot find the Windows XP disc that I need to use to put Windows XP back on, but I have already purchased the Windows 7 upgrade. That was done before all the virus stuff and I was trying to fix all of that before I upgraded. I want to reformat my computer and Install Windows 7 but am worried it isn't going to work since I only have the upgrade purchase. I'm assuming from feedback from the other tech, the only way to completely rid the system of infections is to reformat.

I had upgraded my laptop from Vista to Windows 7. I want to do a destructive reformat but nothing I try works. I was supposed to press one of the F keys (can't recall right now but have tried them all) and none of those work. Everything I have tried has failed. I really REALLY need to get this thing reformatted. I tried using the upgrade disk and now when I reboot it tries to upgrade Windows...which is turning into an all night process.

But if I want to upgrade my Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit, Will I be able to do it with this upgrade disk? after all I will need a fresh install (because 32 to 64) and this is the upgrade version...

When I purchased my emachine last year it came with Vista. At the time of purchase they were offering a free upgrade to Win7. I received the upgrade disk a while back in the mail.I would rather use the win 7 upgrade on an HP machine that also has Vista. The disk I was sent 'seems' to be tied to only emachines. Is it possible to use this disk to upgrade my HP computer instead of my emachine computer?

I purchased a retail copy of Windows 7 Upgrade and installed it about a year ago. It detected my Vista installation but I reformatted and did a clean install. It activated no problem.I now want to wipe my Hard drive and start fresh...but I have an important question. Will my upgrade license key allow me to reinstall Windows 7 without putting Vista back on the computer first? I want to do a clean install. I understand that Upgrade keys need to "see" a previous Windows version in the setup program before you re-format the drive. But, this is the second install of Win7; wouldn't the setup detect that I have an installed copy of Windows 7 before I format?

1. My sister has a Dell Dimension 5100 desktop computer with Windows XP from the factory. Can I put the Windows 7 UPGRADE version on a second hard drive in her machine? Is this OK or do I need the 'FULL' version?
2. Is this automatically going to create two options when booting the machine, giving her the options to boot either into XP or W7?

7 put up a network wizard as soon as I started the machine and I answered questions as best I could. I had trouble renaming the work-group but think I've done that ok and was connected to the Internet immediately, but wouldn't argue if you told me I had created a problem somewhere along here.
Our setup is:
Desktop running XP, which is connected to the wireless router by cable
Laptop running Vista
Laptop running 7
The problem is mainly on the (new) 7 laptop. When I go to network, only the Vista laptop appears above the line (not even the 7 laptop itself!) and below the line are media devices with the name of the 7 laptop and the name of the XP desktop.
When viewing the network map I see the 7 laptop connected by solid lines to a large question mark named "Unknown", which is in turn connected by solid lines to the router, which is connected by solid lines to the Internet. The Vista laptop is connected by broken lines to the router.
The XP desktop has no trouble seeing both laptops and the Vista laptop has no trouble seeing the 7 laptop and the XP desktop. The problem is only with the 7 laptop not being able to see the XP desktop.

I am doing a clean install using the upgrade DVD but on a virtual machine (on a Mac using VMWare Mac Fusion). Everything goes smooth and as per the tutorial except that once I arrive to the "Windows product key", it does not recognize the product key. I skipped that step and completed all other steps as indicated. However, I was unable to activate my windows 7 (last step) as it mentioned that the product is only for upgrade from older version and not for a clean install.
I do have windows XP copy but I would rather do a clean install.

I installed Win 7 RC on a new build and purchased Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM with upgrade to Win 7 Home premium. The Win 7 upgrade disc has arrived. I understand that Vista must be installed and activated for the upgrade to work. Attempts to install Vista with Win 7 RC running or booting from the Vista disc lead to error code 0x80070103, insufficient free space. My HDD has > 450 Gb free space in 2 partitions. Do I need to reformat the HDD in order to install Vista over Win 7?

After a failed hard disk, I'm trying to reinstall W7 from my upgrade disk and I keep getting a "the product key is not valid" error. I read a MSFT support article saying you have to install Vista first, then upgrade to W7.However, how do I now boot from the Vista disk? I've put in the Vista disk, restarted my computer, but every time it just boots to the W7 install screen asking for the product key.

I bought a new computer with win 7 home basic and 2) I want to reinstall os of this computer which has been upgraded to win 7 ultimate from home basic. So I have a choice to reinstall the win 7 ultimate upgrade to this computer again or to the new computer which runs faster. But either way, how can I do it? I think (this is awhile ago) when I was doing upgrading to this computer I paid on line and got an email with an activation code and instructions. So my questions are 1) Can I find the code from this computer? 2) Can I use the code on the new computer? 3) should I format this computer first before I activate the upgrade copy on the new computer to avoid conflicts that both computers are using the same upgrade copy? The reason for the last question is I'd want to move every file to the new computer before I format this computer.
