a friend was burning movies to DVD that I downloaded from bit torrent and ever since I am unable to open any compressed files-zip, avi, ect. My laptop was re-furbished by Gateway so it did not come w/ OS disc to re-install anything. I have Windows7 home premium 64bit & am not very knowledgeable about computers.
View 2 RepliesI can no longer "Open With" (Program X) multiple files, as in the option doesn't even exist when you right-click a file. I noticed when I was clicking several jpgs to open in Photoshop, where my default viewer is Google's Picasa (for ease of viewing and convenience). The strange thing is that I can still "Open With" individual files. I thought maybe it was just a Photoshop goof but it applies to Mp3s/Winamp and AVIs as well. This is very inconvenient!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been hosting servers on various videogames over the year to play with my friends online, recently I tried a game which worked about a month or so ago (mount and blade: warband, I also tried a few others afterwards) but nobody could connect, I checked everything and it should have been working fine but then I looked at various port checking websites and for some reason none of the ports are open anymore.
I've tried changing the port settings, resetting the router and disabling my firewall and none of them seem to work.
I am using Windows 7 on my desktop and laptop.At the end of each week I run Malwarebytes and Superantispyware.I can no longer open Windows Defender unless it has an icon with a castle and blue flag? Microsoft security essentials is running and it says Real time protection on Virus and spyware definitions up to date.Is that enough protection or should I be running another anti virus program?

Internet TV Program Guide now lists some new Classic shows and I thought it would be cool to watch some old I Love Lucy... but nothing. And no other show opened either. Not one. Click on it and it makes that sound... but then nothing happens. Its not crucial, I can live without old reruns of I Love Lucy, but it bugs me that the program is not working as it should.I already re- ran set-up again 3 times. I read in some other thread about TunerFree MCE and I downloaded that, and it works fine. (Now I have access to hundreds of shows from all over the world I'll probably never watch!) But it obviously does not fix my problem. Most of the shows that are supposed to be available in the Program Guide I'm not even interested, but all of them used to open easily, no problem. So I'd like to be able to watch the ones I want.I have not tried to re-install Windows 7. Wasn't the hassle if I screwed something up. But I did update Silverlight, and that didn't do anything either.
Also, I no longer even have an icon for Internet TV, and I swear I did! Now there's just Recorded TV and Program Guide. I download anything I want to watch, either hours or days after it airs, so I don't have cable or any TV service, nor a TV tuner in my laptop. But downloading is time consuming, and takes up room on my hard drive, if I don't watch things right away, so I would love to be able to access Internet TV.There also used to be an whole section of documentaries that aren't there any more. I did already watch most of them, and I loved them. But that entire section is gone now. I think it might have been in Extras Gallery, but I'm not sure. All new weird stuff that also won't open is in there now.
I usually send clients large images around 4Mb via the email. I also upload to various sites, files up to 15Mb. They are all usually jpeg or .psd format.
For some reason it just doesn't work anymore - they get so far and seem to just hang. I contacted my ISP provider and they went through all their trouble shooter but told me that the problem is my end.
I am using Windows 7 64 bit. I have tried IE9 and Google Chrome but neither helps. I use Microsoft Security Essential. I have tried turning off the firewall but this doesn't work either.
Smaller versions of the jpegs seem to upload OK. I haven't done anything to change what I am using recently other than to run the automatic updates.
I have internet satellite using an ipstar modem. No router.
My email store was about 4Gb, quite stable (I have run the 2011 version since its arrival). Because of recent troubles, ably resolved on this site, I had to temporarily shift many files out, and eventually back in. With lots of backup copies during this, the ending volume was about 8Gb.Then I deleted all the unneeded files.Previously the compacting variable was untouched, at the default of every 100 program exits, no problem. Now I set it to every 1. It refused to run. So I set it to every 2. It exited normally on the "off" times, but on the "on" time it produced the error messageThe folder is currently in use by WLM or another application"It does this even when I close everything, reboot and immediately run WLM and exit. And the message store is now up to 9Gb.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had a bunch of zipped font folders on my computer the other day and was installing them without issue, but I clicked something, and they all instantly turned to PDFs. I deleted them all. But now, when I download fonts, my PC no longer recognizes the folders as zipped files containing fonts for me to extract. It gives me the option of opening it with Acrobat or Irfanview or it tells me to choose a default program. I lost my computer in a tornado storm and got a new one and need to have certain fonts installed for a book I'm working on.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI noticed my laptop being slow and so I checked the active processes. Found an unknown process dllhost.exe using a massive portion of CPU. A friend of mine managed to locate file and alter it so that it was restricted to only the admin of the machine (me), along with another file below it (dllhst3g) � was worried that this was some sort of infection that went unnoticed by my antivirus software which at the time was Stop Sign. Since locking files computer worked faster but have been unable to scan computer for infections as Stop Sign couldn�t be update for unknown reason. Since then have been infected with virus which stopped me getting to cmd tool, task manager and changed desktop background. Started laptop in Safe Mode with networking, got a copy of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware which managed to find the problem and delete it. Then was advised to use Avast anti-virus and had no problems since. My main problem is that the 2 files are still locked off and I am wondering how important those processes are? Also, my primary concern is the sudden inability to perform administrator tasks. I am the only user on my laptop and am an administrator according to profile on Control Panel, but when trying to perform Microsoft Windows Update receive pop-up message saying: You need to provide administrator permission To complete this task, you need to log in as an administrator or ask an administrator to complete the task for you. One of the updates to be downloaded is Windows 7 Service Pack. gain admin privileges again and let me know how important the dllhost and dllhst3g files are and/or how to unlock them?

I am able to install programs (ex: Skype, etc), but when I reboot my machine or turn it off and back again, the program I just installed does not appear on my hard drive at all. Any files I save (Word Document, Excel, favorites from Internet Explorer) doesn't appear or retain when I reboot my machine. I suspected a virus attack so I ran a virus scan with AVG but it doesn't find any viruses or errors.

Read far enough and you'll see that I solved that problem using Networking issue - Win7 printer, XP remote machines.Fast forward 13 or so months. Since that time I have replaced the printer, I've had a motherboard and processor issue with my box (since fixed), and no interruption of things working as they should. My printer - Canon ip4800 series - is USB hardwired to my Windows 7 computer, and the other home computers - two Windows 7 laptops, an XP box, and an XP netbook - can print to the printer, and view files on my Windows 7 machine, over our wireless home network. And that's been constant through the changes described.
Then yesterday, for no known reason, my daughter's Windows 7 laptop stopped being able to print. She'd send jobs to the correct printer, but they'd just queue up, with the queue visible from her machine, but not when I looked at the printer from my machine (that is looking at the print queue from her machine shows the jobs, but looking at it from mine shows no jobs).Nothing I did would result in stuff from her machine, from any application, to go to the printer.I finally deleted the printer from her machine, figuring I'd just add it back.I try adding a printer to the laptop, it doesn't find the printer on the list of available printers. When I try adding it by typing the name - \mywin7canon ip4800 series - that fails.When I look at "network" from her laptop, my computer shows up, but if I click on it, Windows says it can't connect.
When I type ping her_computer from a DOS box, it can't find it - but when I type ping any_other_computer it finds those.Her laptop can get on the internet from our home wireless network. All the other computers in the house - Windows 7 and XP - can access shared files on my PC, and more importantly, print across the network to my USB printer.Please, patiently and precisely, guide me through stuff to check on my PC and her laptop, to get this working again. I've been through the network and sharing center on my PC and the settings are correct.Again, as it is right now, my printer is not defined on her laptop.Final, cro-magnon- level question here: If I did a system restore on her laptop, back to a point when it had been able to print, might that fix things?
My wife has Windows 7 home premium x64 on her laptop and is using Word 2007. The problem she is having is she will open a word file, change it up, save it, then re-open it later and its the old file not the new one. Where as I can open the edited file on my desktop running the same OS but with Word 2010 and the file that opens for me is the newest version.

Basically win 7 would let me select the program and it would show up on the list of programs to use. I would select always use and I'm done. But I moved the folders containing the files to a different folder and now my two programs I use will not show up in the open with list. I now have to go to the program itself and search for the files. Its a pain because I could click on the files and get right to them.

I lost the ability to see those files from my SONY Bravia. Files such as bootmgr and ntldr are shown and I can't hide them. Also, show Protected System files is unchecked and show hidden files is also unchecked so they shouldn't be showing. I tried to re-add their system file attribute but I keep getting an "Access Denied" error in CMD and I do not have user account control on and I'm on a Default Administrator Account.

Then it said that my flash player could not be run, or something like that. The main thing was that something has hijacked my computer, preventing me from running ANY exe file, including my Trend Micro Maximum Security; HijackThis; System Restore; etc. I called Trend Micro and they could not help me either. I think I had glimpsed something that looked like it said "worm32" which leads me to believe that it is a worm that is infecting my computer. I keep getting the same message whenever I open any exe file: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs panel." I went into the default programs panel and found about 108 extensions that the current default is "unknown application". Some of these extensions include .386, .asp, .bat, .chk, and .cmd to name a few.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm really at my wit's end with this current issue I'm having. I recently got some spyware "pw.exe" which posed as "Win 7 Internet Security". I do not recall what I did to get rid of this issue, but the rogue anti-virus software is no longer posting imaginary warning messages. Avast shows no threats + Malwarebytes removed all the remaining threats.As a workaround, I created a 2nd Administrator account and was able to connect and open up Firefox to browse for some fixes. This was before Malwarebytes removed the threats (LOG AT END OF POST)I previously used to not be able to open any .exe files on the 1st admin account due to some permission issue related to the spyware. After the spyware/trojan removal - I have messed up .exe file associations and cannot access "regedit.exe" either through "run" or "cmd". I keep getting a "Cannot find C:Windowsegedit.exe" despite the file still being there. The only way to get cmd is through task manager by CTRL + clicking "Open new Process". View 3 Replies View RelatedHere is a rundown of what happened. I was on the computer, not doing anything online and suddenly the computer shuts down and restarts. Upon restarting, windows (I'm running Windows 64 bit Home Premium) appears to not be able to open. It promptly displayed a new loading bar with "Loading Windows Files" or something like that. I attempted to reboot in safe mode, lastest working config, etc but nothing worked. I ran hardware checks including memory checks and nothing appeared to be wrong. When trying to run the repair utility, there was a startuprepairoffline error and the issue could not be fixed. I attempted a system restore but it said the restore failed. However, upon restarting my computer, it loaded to Windows and said restore was successful. Now that I somehow have Windows up, I am unable to use any programs of any kind besides cmd, regedit, etc. I have attempted to download the exe_fix_w7 file however it will not merge with the existing registry as it says that some are in use. I have tried both in safe mode as well as normal but to no use. I attempted to manually edit the lines which seems possible however I'm unsure if I did it correctly. So basically I'm stuck at not being able to open any files at the moment. I'm still not entirely sure there isn't something wrong with the hardware as on start up the computer now makes a sound on the Dell splash screen as if something is shutting down internally, however the BIOS diagnostic had everything passing so it may be nothing.

View 2 Replies View Relatedhave been setting up all the *.wma files on my music web site to stream as directed by *.wax files. everything was fine in XP Pro...but now I've gone over to Windows 7; & noticed that when I click on one of the *.wma's at my site...it doesn't stream...Windows 7 instead asks me if I want to open or save the file. no matter which option I choose...it treats it as a text file (opening the *.wax in 'Notepad').
