Can't Transfer Files Over Network
Aug 15, 2011
about to do a major hardware upgrade on one of the win7 PCs in the house (will call it PC A), pretty much building a new computer so expecting to have to do a reinstall of the os like i did when upgrading my gaming pc (which will be PC B ). trying to backup important files on PC A by copying them over the network to PC B but am so far unsuccessful.
both computers are running 64bit win7 ultimate. both can see each other and access each others shares fine. just can't copy files over.
trying to copy the files from PC A to one of the slave drives on PC B on both PCs: the drives are shared, network discovery is on, password protected sharing is off, file and printer sharing is on. also tried going directly to the folder on PC B and setting the permissions so that 'everyone' had 'full control'
i don't see anything that would cause an issue. yet when i am on PC A trying to copy files to PC B it says that i need permission to copy the files.
i could send them from PC A to PC B instead of having to copy everything to the public documents folder in PC A and using PC B to grab them.

For some reason I am not able to transfer large files to my Windows Home Server (home build). The file will start to transfer then just stop and error out.
The error message says Network Error: There is a problem accessing serverfolder.
This is on a wired connection so I dont know why it would just be dropping the connection. I can still surf the internet fine during this time.
Realtek RTL8169/8100 network cart, cat5e cable, 10/100 netgear 24 port unmanaged switch, WRT54GL router(tomato firmware). NICs are set to auto negotiate.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
I attached a screen shot of the error message and network monitor.

I used XP Transfer Wizard to store my files (over 200GB) on external hard drive. Now I have Windows 7 machine and can't use them directly.I tried to use Virtual PC XP mode to import files but Virtual PC can only handle something around 136 GB virtual hard disk, so after 6 hours of transfer it stopped... I don't have the XP machine anymore - I'm stuck with Windows 7 and can't figure out how to move these files over..Is there a way to actually open all these Wizard IMGXXXXX.dat files and read them?

This sounds really noobie of me but is it possible to improve local network transfer speed by adding a 2nd network card. I was planning to connect one exclusively for lan transfers and another one hooked to a separate wireless router.
Right now only a maximum of 3 users can stream SD videos off the PC before it gets a little choppy.
The pc in question runs on windows 7 and it's board has built in gigabit, I happen to have a spare gigabit card.

I saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:
Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings.
The message pops up only a few seconds after the transfer begins. Why is this?! I need those files and windows has screwed me.Everything is basically the same as before I reinstalled. Same computer, same windows 7 installation just recovered to factory settings.Same system language as before.BTW I'm on a Toshiba L505 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have tried all the usual suspects such as a clean boot and uninstalling my antivirus to rule out third party interference. I have more than enough space on both my computer and on the external hard drive. I have tried only transferring a user account a few MBs large. I have reinstalled the OS twice just in case something went wrong there. I have clicked on the .MIG file directly. All lead to the same error message. The transfer file seems to be intact and not currupt
Is there another software other than WET that can use the same transfer file that WET created to restore my files? Please help me solve this if you can or at least point me in the right direction because right now I'm clueless. I can't emphasize how important those files are to me. I've searched for solutions on several forums and it seems that this is a problem people have been having for years now and windows hasn't provided an answer yet.
An interesting note, When I reboot the laptop after trying to do the transfer, a new user account appears at startup alongside the one I normally use. This new user account has the same unique name of the user account I am trying to restore but that's where the similarity ends. All the settings for this account are default settings and empty folders.

I can't transfer any files that are bigger than 1mb to any of my flash drives. I've tried many different sizes and types of files using different USBs and different ports and even formatted the USBs. I can transfer files in between my two internal HDDs without any problems. Also it seems if the file system is FAT32 it transfers files normally. When the file system is NTFS it has a speed of 600-1000 MB/s which shouldn't be possible since they are usb 2 flash drives. I wouldn't really mind but i need to transfer 4+ gb files.

Ok I'm totally new to networks & everything so bear with me.
My computer is the main machine.
I have Win 7 64 & the other computer, which is my buddies is XP Pro 32.
I currently have an N wireless Netgear router that both computers are hooked up via ethernet & my machine also has the N wireless dongle from Netgear, but they dont have drivers for 64 yet.
Now I want to send a couple of files to my other computer which is my buddies. I want him to also be able to send me files, but he tends to surf the net a little less carelessly than I would and I want to make sure when hes sending or receiving info from my particular computer that I dont get a virus or anything.
So how do I set up a network between a Win 7 64 computer & an XP Pro 32 computer, making sure to extra safeguard my main machine?

I have files backed up on a WD My Book external hard drive from my XP computer. When I plug in the USB in my new HP Touchsmart, it opens the jump drive, but says the folder is empty. I also have files on my PNY jump drive from the XP and another Vista computer. It opens the jump drive and sees the Vista files but not the XP files. The Vista computer sees all files on the WD My Book and the PNY jump drive. Any suggestion to get Windows 7 to see the files. My old computer died, so I can't use Windows Easy Transfer.

I was using XP Pro and am getting new Windows 7 Dell 8300 XPS i7 Home Premium 64 bit.
Last time I got a new one, I just installed the old drive as a 2nd drive in new computer and all my files were there as well as all my software I accumulated. Most of the programs worked but some did not, but no big deal.
I am thinking of doing the same thing when I get new computer again; probably will get it tomorrow. Since I am going from XP to Windows 7, will this be a problem?

I want to transfer files from xp to Windows 7 via LAN. however, i want the files to go to a specific partition that i just created for these files. Im unsure how to select the proper partition. there is nothing on the new partition, no OS, i just want to use it as storage.I have a 1tb hdd in the computer the files are to be transfered to. when i did a clean install of Windows 7, i created a 100gb partition to use as my primary, (with my OS and basically everything), leaving the other 900gb unallocated space. i just created a 24gb partition to use to back up files from another computer.in command prompt as administrator, in diskpart, i selected the new volume, but im not seeing a new drive designation for the new partition in which this volume is supposed to be located.i also did not choose a label for the new partition, such as C; D; E;....

I'm trying to transfer between my Desktop computer (XP) and laptop (Windows 7). When I do it wifi it only transfers at speeds between 1MBs to 3MBs. When I physically connect to my router I get better speeds at 10-11Mbs. However in both cases on large files it loses connection. It says that connection lost/failed and gives me option of retry/skip. When I hit retry it still doesn't work. When I disconnect and retry that method it starts up again from scratch however rarely does it fully transfer a file. These files are anywhere from 2GIGs to 4GIGS.I don't have anti-security on either computer. I'm using new Netgear router.

Here is my problem. In this case, I am trying to transfer pictures from one of my XP systems to my Windows 7 Home Premium system over my wired network. Between the XP systems, things run fairly quick. But not with 7 involved. When I go to transfer the 47 pictures that I want, it tells me that it will take 18 minutes. And this is for only 66.7MB of data. Tell me this can get better. Being new to 7, I have no idea where to look for the problem. I tried searching Microsoft's site and the help files on my system. I just can't find a solution.
Here is some more info, and maybe some you don't need. On the Windows 7 system, I can access all the shared folders on my other systems (all XP SP3). If I go to the network map, my other systems are marked as "The following discovered devices can not be placed in the map.". I don't know if that is a problem or not. The reason I did that is because I was reading through the Microsoft site on file sharing and that was mentioned. It also mentions a program called LLTD, which may be needed on 32-bit XP systems. I tried installing that on my XP system, but it said I didn't need it.
As far as the file transfer, while sitting at my XP system, access is denied when I try to access the shared folder (for my pictures) on Windows 7. Now if I transfer them to the Users/Public/Pictures folder, it will transfer them in just over 5 minutes. Still a little slow, in my opinion, and not where I want them. Why can I transfer there and not into the folder I want them? And why is quicker to transfer while sitting at my XP system?
I have made sure that all the systems have the same workgroup name. I have also tried disconnecting the power from my modem, router, and all systems then powering each one up one at a time. That was suggested to me before. It didn't change anything.
One last thing. While starting my Windows 7 system, as soon as it was at the desktop, I tried to transfer the pictures again and the transfer took off. Almost immediately, it said that there was 20 seconds left. It was flying like I thought it should. Less then a minute into the transfer, it hit a wall and changed to about 20 minutes. Go figure. I checked my settings for the folders I want to transfer to and they are set as shared. Maybe at that point, a security program started up. I don't know. I do have a trial version of Norton's Internet Security installed. It came preloaded with the system. I was thinking of removing that and going with Avast free. I have checked any firewalls and did disable them. No difference.
I tried to list everything I've tried. Hopefully, some helpful info in there. I find it strange that I can access the shared folders but not transfer from them. Any thoughts on what to do? Is there a setting in Windows 7 that needs to be changed?

From the Desktop I get message, You need permission to perform this action
In contrast, from the Desktop, I can copy from the Laptop to the Desktop. I have full permission and administration control.

If I were to do a cable transfer using my usb transfer cable and two pc's both loaded with Win7 Home Premium. One brand new. Should I load the "other programs" (Windows Office etc.) on the new machine before I hook up and try the transfer? With this last transfer that wasn't made clear. I went from XP Pro to Win 7 HP using an external HDD. I had to reconnect and run the xfer wizard twice to get all my email items transferred. Again after updating the Office package to SP3.
