Artifacts - Screen Flicker
Apr 17, 2009Sometimes fingernail-sized parts of my screen flicker. Are these called artifacts?
They smooth out when I drag the mouse pointer over them.
My drivers are as new as can be.

When booting, the Windows boot.ini screen does not appear. It goes from my Bios directly to the windows install screen. I want to run in safe mode to check on artifacting (green dots) that started to appear, but I never get the choice. Is there something in 'msconfig/boot' that I need to highlite?
edit: I managed to get into Safe Mode by turning off the computer with Windows 7 running and then restarting. I did not see any artifacts. I rolled back to the previous driver and the artifacts are still there. It might be my video card.
I was playing EVE online yesterday morning, and decided I wanted to see how far my machine could go with forced settings in the Nvidia Control Panel. It crashed after a few minutes and I thought 'Well, thats the limit. I'll turn them down to where they were.' I did, everything worked fine, and I shut the computer off.
Last night, however, I went to boot up the machine and During the initial dell loading screen (the BIOS load screen), There were wierd color glitches all over the place. After this, During the Nvidia RAID controller load screen, there were DOS charecters occuring at random intervals on the screen, interrupting the actual text (and these charecters werent normal charecters, one looked like the Delta symbol).
After Windows began to load (again, with bizarre color glitches), I would get a BSOD attributing the error to nvlddmkm.sys and it was conducting a physical memory dump. It would restart, go into system repair, wouldn't repair, and the loop would continue.
I COULD get into safe mode, however. After doing so, I tried uninstalling nvidia drivers, (and again with driver sweeper), and reinstalling. I would get a dialogue saying that Server Stereo wasn't installed properly.
Going into DXdiag told me that the machine no longer recognized the graphics card (all the fields were blank or listed as N/A under the display tab).
I decided to just go balls out and reformat using the XP disc that came with the computer. Again with the DOS charecters, which made navigating the windows setup screens a real pain (I did them by memory, mostly). As I went to bed, the reformat went, and even THAT screen was plagued by these mysterious charecters. It looked like a 1980s computer virus on my machine!
This morning, I awoke, led the windows installer process through what it needed (all the while enduring the color glitches that plagued safe mode). I left for work this morning while the Horribly designed Dell Installing Applications window was flashing. I'm currently still at work, so I can't provide super detailed explanations, but I hope someone can get me a prognosis.
Things on my list to do are:
Reinstall graphics drivers.
Reseat the Graphics Cards.
Reset CMOS.
Test cards on other machine.
If anyone's encountered this problem and a solution, please please PLEASE tell me. It would save me a great deal of stress and chain-smoking.
My Asus G73-JH laptop is currently freezing at the Windows Starting screen. I've read a lot of other forum posts that feature the same problem, BUT there is artifacting (bunch of colored dots) on the top of this screen that goes across the "Starting Windows" screen in a sort of horizontal line. Sometimes it just goes straight to the "Windows has failed to startup" screen. None of the System Recovery Options from the Startup Tool seem to help fix the problem, they've all been tried. Trying to boot in safe mode doesn't work either, as after it starts to load the files, the artifacting appears on the top again after about the third file and it freezes.
I have not made ANY major changes to anything on the system for over two months prior. Because of the artifacting seen, I imagine the video card is fried or malfunctioning. I called Asus and all they suggested to me so far was to reformat, because apparently they think its a driver issue, but I'd like to consider myself fairly tech savvy and believe that there has got to be a better solution that does not involve reformatting the hard drive, as I had a lot of important data that had been stored and not backed up the previous night before the unexpected freezing. The only things I seem to have access to is BIOS and the Startup Tool. I have a System Recovery Disc too, and am curious if there is a solution to this problem (I am not well versed in BIOS), and (assuming the video card is shot) if there would be a way I can access by data and possibly back it up before reformatting so I can persuade Asus support that my card is in fact shot so I can send it in for a replacement!

this is the 5th time i've got a pink screen with artifacts, randomly happens over the course of 4 months. this time i got a blue screen following it. last time the display driver corrected itself. i've ran furmark until the temp maxed out with no artifacts or anything. 86 c. times that the pink screen have occurred, once during mw3, once during vlc media player, twice during Internet just at the homepage, and once during windows media player.

I just got Windows 7 Home Premium today and installed 64bit edition. I must say, I'm over the moon. Great OS. Have a very small annoyance issue I was hoping someone could tell me is a result of a feature that I can turn off that isn't a major.
So here's what's happening
In Windows Explorer / My Computer when it's maximized "full screen", when I double click a folder and navigate around the directories, the screen changes brightness to bright then back very quickly to the original level (it basically flashes). If a folder only has a few other files inside of it, it even changes brightness when I hover over the icons.
It's not a major and doesn't do it when it's not fully maximized. Even if I make it the size of the screen by dragging the corners when it's restored down it doesn't do it. Very weird, and kind of hurts my eyes, especially when it's getting late at night and I should be in bed already.
When I disable visual themes, the problem goes away, but then it looks like rank, and I want to have all the flashy things that are unique to this version of windows, so...
guys im experiencing a very frustating problem...everytime i open games or apps it is not in full screen mode and it flickers when i click...i already updated the drivers for my video card...i experienced this after uninstalling RegistryEasy

I'll keep it short and sweet here. Just did the Windows 7 - 64 Home Premium install and did all the Windows and HP updates (yes, video driver is up to date - Nvidia 9300GSm). My screen is flickering for a 1/10th of a second every 20-30 seconds or so. It is incredibly irritating lol. Any ideas?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had this problem when I was just neutrally browsing through the internet when my screen just immediately flickered black, not for very long only about 1 second at the most, and my theme changed. I didn't really know what happened, so just kept browsing. I was browsing for about 20 more minutes and the same thing happened again, but this time it changed back. Recently just installed a new video card in my system, and have all the updated drivers, however, I wen't to CPUID to check the temps. of my system and my video card was pulling some numbers I haven't seen it do at this kind of browsing. My graphics card was about 67C and during regular web browsing it is usually around 30-35C. Is this a problem with Windows? Or is it a problem with my Graphics Card?
View 2 Replies View Relatedthis extremely annoying problem started the other day after i ran an energy report, which btw was the first thing i had done on the computer that day. so the energy report may or may not have something to do with it.
the problem could be referred to as several things really, jittering,
flickering, flashing, even kind of a bounce maybe....its just real quick, a split second at a time. depending on what im doing, it can be as often as every 3 to 5 seconds, or just intermittently.
heres a list of when the problem occurs.
1. watching vidoes online. hulu.com so far is the worst. picture flickers every 3 to 5 seconds. Internet much better, just every so often. watched one full show on nbs.com. didn't flicker once....!!?
2. flickers in game loading screens but not in game. thank god!
3. also when i launch an app or maybe a video offline it'll flicker once as it launches.
here's when it dosent occur.
1. in games. (outside of the loading screen of course)
2. outside of watching video online there is no problem as far as browsing etc.
3. no flickering on the desktop, or when navigating though windows.
to fix the problem ive tried windows restore, and reinstalling my video card drivers. neither fixed my problem. outside of doing a reformat i dont know what else to do.
well when i let my pc sit for 10 min it goes into the screen saver mode which is nothing just black and then i get artifacts and the screen goes of and then turns on black with artifacts and it just does that. so i have to restart it next is when i use windows media center i play a movie and boom i get artifacts and the pc freezes and got to restart, and i kno its not my graphic card because it works with windows xp and everything was good.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am seeing small artifacts on the upper edge of the taskbar (using classic view, I could use Aero if I wanted to). I'm not convinced that this is actually browser related, it is just that since I have a browser up full time, that is what is leaving artifacts behind. If I resize the bar, IE drag it up a notch and back to normal again, the artifacts go away (basically a refresh..).

I've been using my PC fine for the last 3 years. A month or so ago I updated to Windows 7 Ultimate x64. That too has been running fine, then today, after about 3-4 hours of use, in the middle of a game, my PC screen suddenly got weird wavy lines and colours all over it and crashed. Long story short this has now happened about 10 times. Interestingly, I thought it was a graphics card problem, so I tried it on my HD TV (both TV and monitor connected via HDMI) and it did it on the TV too. I then uninstalled the nvidia (8800gt) drivers and restarted my PC. It works fine in safe mode, and in normal mode, but I can't change my resolution to 1680x1050, (it's native resolution) without installing the nvidia drivers.
I don't know if the problem is the drivers, (but never had an issue before?) or with resolution, (monitor problem?) Every time I do install the nvidia drivers the PC restarts normally, screen looks fine, and the PC seems to run, until I click on anything with the mouse and then the wavy lines and weird colours appear again and I can't CTL-ALT-DEL, I have to hard reset it every time. Once I left it for 5 mins. and moved the mouse a little every min. or so and that was OK, but as soon as I click on anything, it freezes and artifacts again. Also, my antivirus flashed red a few times and so did the windows clock in the bottom right corner of the screen, (very odd!) when the PC first starts windows.
That made me think it could be a virus, (even though I'm very careful about what I DL), but I had Avast run through a deep clean check and it found nothing. I also tried to get Win 7 to repair itself, which did nothing either! I've tried reinstalling the drivers, using newer and older nvidia drivers and I've tried to install my HG216 monitor driver, but since it's a few years old there is no official Win 7 support and all I have is an inf. file I can't install on Win 7. I haven't included a dump file, I know a fair amount about computers but I haven't worked out how to do that yet. Also, since I have to hard reboot everytime, in my event view the only errors listed seem to be about 'power failure', so I don't know if the bug or whatever would show up in the dump file?
What would cause some of the games and printing flicker and freeze on me?
View 1 Replies View RelatedFirefox browses and navigates fine, not a problem. Only when scrolling either with arrow or mouse, the background and sometimes the taskbar/system tray flicker. It's like you can see what window is open behind the browser view.I have tried using IE (not a fan...) and it didn't work so I uninstalled Firefox and attempted a reinstall only to find the problem remains.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter doing upgrade desktop icons would flicker and after some time the screen resolution would change. Then computer would stop responding and would only respond after forcing reboot. I contacted Microsoft and they had me do a clean boot which stopped the problems.
I restarted non-Microsoft processes one at a time and the problem seems to be caused by NVIDIA Display Driver Service. As long as this is not running computer seems to be fine. Only question is this something that is needed to run? When on Vista Home Premium before upgrade to Windows 7 there was no problem with this running.
Running Windows Ultimate 7 x64.I have had the problem a few of you have had with the thumbnail previews on the Superbar flickering when you mouse over the icon. Its deeper than just the superbar screwing up. When this happens I cant highlight and play more than one song at a time with WMP Have to minimize windows just to return to browser and switch back and forth to windows explorer.I have to reboot my PC just to play a DVD folder or DVD disc. The problem started well into 6 months or more of using Windows 7 so I knew it was a problem with either some software I installed or a Component problem. I use Acronis for back-ups and have saved full back-ups of Windows 7 that I know are non-problematic , so after restoring a good image on a freshly formatted partition the problem remained.Tried all the obvious things like video drivers and all but still felt it was in the motherboard chipsets. Something had gotten corrupted or changed.
I have a Gigabyte MB and downloaded the drivers for Windows 7, installed.still there. Tried north bridge and south bridge. What I ended up doing was installing Windows XP x64 on a extra partition which allowed me to use my original installation disc for my motherboard and was able to individually install the drivers for both chips...and after the installation of the south bridge, the computer needed to reboot, at which time it went into a deep process (screen display with please wait or whatever) that took several minutes to complete.I dont remember it ever taking that long to complete .....talking ...like....6-8 minutes. I knew something good was happening.I know these drivers are for XP while in XP but I really wanted to do this just to see if it might get in there and root around deep in those chips since they are the original drivers.I never used XP x64 before with this AMD x2 5600+ I am currently using so I spent a couple hours installing a few programs I use a lot and testing them. Finally I rebooted back into my 7x64 (use EasyBCD) and have not had one problem with it yet. It has been 2 days since I did all this.
I've been having this problem for a while now, and I really want to get to the bottom of it. The flicker takes the form of narrow vertical shadows moving across the screen horizontally. It isn't particularly noticeable on lighter backgrounds, but on a darker screen, it's really distracting. I notice it most when play Minecraft (in dark areas) and at darker scenes during DVD playback. I thought it might be that the monitor isn't getting enough power - there's my PC, an external HDD, surround sound speaker system and two lamps running off the same power supply - but I plugged it into a different supply, and still had the same problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt mostly happens in Lightwave 9.6 and Photoshop CS2. So the problem is that when I open a drop down menu in those programs the program either flickers a lot or it goes in the background and I have to alt+tab to get it back every time. It is really annoying because I can't do almost all important things in Lightwave and I can't save images in other formats in Photoshop beacuse of the drop down menu, and in other programs it flickers a lot and is just annoying.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 7 on my computer (Upgraded from windows xp) and everything seems well. However, at random times it (sometimes it flickers black) goes into BSOD then restarts again to windows,,the DMP shows different kind of problems like:

I recently bought two 2gb ddr2RAM and I am now using it.
So I just recently upgraded to Windows 7. After installing all the necessary drivers provided by Windows Update, It was time to install the one provided for the Graphics Card. Ever since I've got the driver set, there seems to be this flicker on the screen that tends to show up every few seconds.

I changed the flicker rate to 70 Hertz without checking the Proton's maximum flicker rate - yeah, that's really SMART - so now I've got an issue with my external display. It worked okay for second but then my laptop screen turned black and the external display reads "Signal Out of Range" (duh, the Protron works only up to a 69.8 Hertz flicker rate, which I SHOULD have checked BEFORE changing it, but what's done is done -_-).Now, when I plug in the HDMI cable, my laptop screen goes to black and the external display still reads that same message. I can't change the flicker rate without seeing the menu on my laptop screen.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy wife did something on her PC (she doesn't know exactly for sure what & can't explain it completely me), and now she can't boot up her PC. She says it had something to do with changing the security settings for a program she uses a lot so it wouldn't keep asking her if she wanted to launch it, and that's when it told her to restart the PC, then it wouldn't boot up anymore. When you reboot, the screen eventually goes to a black screen saying "Windows failed to start. A software or hardware error may be the cause" or something to that effect. It offers me the option to "Launch Startup Repair" or "Start Windows Normally".If I Launch Startup Repair, nothing much happens --- it says it's adding files, then it looks like Windows is about to boot up, then it goes to a black screen for a long time & nothing happens.
If I choose Start Windows Normally, it simply reboots & eventually brings me back to the same screen again.I've tried using rebooting and selecting ESC to get to the boot menu, then installing the Win 7 installation disc & selecting the DVD drive, then I select thelanguage, then I click Repair, but it sits there forever with nothing happening.I also tried an outside boot disc I found on the web & it doesn't launch.
i have a Dell Vostro 1520 and im running Windows 7 with a 32bit. It is only 2 years only. It started about a month ago. I was on my laptop viewing and deleting some unwanted photos i had. A few minutes later i realized that i deleted a photo that i wanted. So i went to the recycling bin and restored that photo. When i went back to my photos and went into the album, it said something like i do no have permission to access this folder. Please press continue to get full permission. I clicked continue and i got the access i should have. Now i tried many more random folders and the same thing happened. Also when i came out of the folders, the folders had a big pad lock sign on the front of it. After that i shut down the laptop and went to turn it back on. The laptop will power on like normal. I can press f12 for the boot options. which i have already tried many times. I also tried it in safe mode and what-not, but still nothing. I can hear the fan and stuff spinning up like normal. I have also put and CD into the CD ROM and that spins up fine. So after the Dell logo on the screen, it goes black and stays that way with the cursor. You can move the cursor around no problem. I should also add that the battery light is and has been flashing for a good wile. Its flashing orange and blue. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the battery. Because my laptop will not charge with the AC adapter in it for many months now. It will only stay powered on with the AC adapter plugged in. One more thing. The LED lights over the buttons. None of the are flashing, besides one, on the far left. And i cant find out anywhere what this LED light stands for.
