XP Does Not See New Physical HDD?
Jul 20, 2011
Have Win 7 pro and virtual XP. Just installed a new, second, physical HDD in Win 7, drive D:. Everything is normal in Win 7. But why does this drive not show up in the XP My Computer under Hard Disk Drives? Can I do something to get it in there? If not, how can I access it from XP? I have tried sharing, integration enabled, etc. and just about everything else and while I can map the drive in XP, I always get access denied if I try to open it. And it is shared with everyone and all permissions are enabled.
Best case would be for XP just to see a second Local Drive. Otherwise is there a tutorial for sharing/mapping a Win 7 drive into XP.

So I just custom purchased a new computer with 12 GB of Corsair Dominator RAM. My "System Information" shows 12 GB of installed physical memory, but only 10 Gb of available physical memory. And just an hour ago it was only 9.97 GB of available physical memory. Just wondering if anyone knows why it would not be the full 12 GB. As I typed this post, it went back down to 9.97. It was my understanding that the system information is not dynamic, and my available memory should not change anyway.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
I actually work in the IT industry, and have A+, Net+, Sec+, MCSA, CCNA. I am kind of embarassed to be here asking this, but it's odd.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with a Core i7 extreme (not OC yet I just got the PC today lol) and Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 along with a single GTX-285. I found a great deal and would only have saved about $200 building it myself with the exact same specs, so I just went ahead and bought this one. I have been building a lot of systems for friends lately and needed a break.

I am having problems with physical memory when I am playing games on Facebook. It has always gone a bit high, but now it shoots up and throws me out of the internet completely.I have tried looking for answers on this site and other places, but most of it confuses me!When I tried to download TSG SysInfo, my pc blocked it as unknown and potentially dangerous so I stopped.I have an Advent pc, 2.67 GB, 32 bit operating system, using IE9.

My system is a Asus L1N84 WS SLI FX74 This system has two physical processors on it. So its two dual cores making it 4 cores.(this is the main focus of this thread being started)
I have had this system since vista was new.
When I biult this system I ordered a copy of Vista Home Premium
When I got it up and running I noticed that when I went to system info it said I had 2 processors. Well I called Asus and AMD and Microsoft. And all of them said that the reason I was seeing two processors is because I have two processors. Me not wanting to hear it did alot of research until I found one thing that told me I was just being told what they thought would get me off the phone with them. And I am having the same issue with Windows7 RC1
What I told them is that is not a good answer because my previous system said I had 2 processors and that system was an AMD 4200 X2
So it said 2 processors and it was just ONE dual core.
Not to mention that this board got a horrible write up against Intel which caused AMD to trash the whole 4x4 idea. Bad for them because this is one hell of a system with all four cores running. Which were not running during those benchmarks against the Intel quad 6700 at the time. Remember I said I installed Vista Home premium.
Well it turned out while I was searching Microsofts web site I looked at the differences between Vista Home premium and ULTIMATE. There was my answer staring me right in the face.... Ultimate was the only version that had MULTI PHYSICAL CPU SUPPORT! So I then purchased Vista Ultimate and checked the amount of processors in the system window and also In CPUZ . And there they were......4 processors... Needless to say that I quickly benchmarked it again on pcpitstop and 3dmark 06 and on pcpitstop my numbers doubled!!!
Literally DOUBLED. Because now the other processor was being utilized.
I add in here about the issue with the Intel benchmark just to say that this system is and was totally comparable to any intel system at that time and AMD scrapped it because of a faulty test!!! The sites that did their reviews were only running one of the dual cores which is why it was only slightly better then one FX 60 in there reports!! THIS is over DOUBLE and FX 60 with all 4 cores running!
Anyway... Now to the issue about Windows7 ULTIMATE........
THEY didnt put that support in Windows7 Ultimate making it no good to use with a server board!! And now I have this OS in here and am only running on 2 cores AGAIN!!! What will microsoft do to fix this issue for all the people that want to run Windows7 in their servers boards INSTEAD of the new WINDOWS SERVER 2008?
How do I get my processors to show up?? Anyone have any answers?
The Microsoft technical support told me that they cannot answer that and I would have to call technical support after I purchase Windows7 and have the issues!! WHY WOULD I WANT TO PURCHASE IT WITH THIS ISSUE !!! ANYONE?? Help please? Microsoft?
Just to clarify the post above for anyone that says it.... I have ULTIMATE . that IS the RC1. And it says 2 processors and cpuz which said 4 before I installed this NOW says 2!

On occasion my physical memory usage will quickly rise form between 1 to 2 gigs of memory usage to over four until it reaches 98-99% percent of memory usage. I am running on 5 gigs of ram. This problem has even occurred while the computer was essentially idle. When this happens the computer loses almost all functionality. I've tried ending all non-essential processes to alleviate this problem but it makes no difference.

Has anyone been able to get the VirtualXP environment to see a physical DVD burner as a burner, rather than just a DVD drive?
I've configured the setting to use my physical F: drive which is a LG DVD burner. However any software I have loaded into VirtualXP does not recognize this drive as a burner.
I can put a DVD in the physical drive and access it via the virtual environment. That part works just fine. But no burning capability.
I guess this would be moot if I could get Nero to install on Windows 7/64.

What can I do to lower the Physical Memory Usage in my Laptop?
For information, I am using Windows Seven Ultimate (build 7600) with RAM 1 GB, Intel Core i3 M350 @ 2.27 GHz.
When I hit task manager, the Physical Memory:
Total : 941
Cached : 85
Available : 81
Free : 0
Physical Memory average 92% all the time (currently I am using Windows Classic for it is known as the simplest and lowest taking memory of windows setting). If I am using it in normal Windows Seven Aero Themes, my laptop has a big chance to go Blue Screen.
Yes, I gotta tell you that my laptop got Blue Screen suddenly after previous days I set administrator and user password in BIOS. I thought at that time it is just because of it, then after I reset it to default way (no password at all) the system is still has a big chance to go Blue Screen.
I have tried to clean up with Ccleaner, defrag all my disks, using spyware malware removal, and it give me no positive result at all. It is still always goes above 800MB Memory usage with Physical Memory average above 80% all the time.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.Ok, so heres my problem. Maybe 3 or 4 days ago my physical memory started running at around 30%-40% (around 1.5gb), and this is at idle and starts happening right at start-up. Normally in past it runs at around 10% (600mb or so). I have noticed it mainly when plaing SW: Force Unleashed and Dawn of War 2. Gameplay runs fine for maybe 3 or 4 seconds then freezes for 10 seconds then is fine again for 3 or 4 seconds and so on. I have tried disabling services, clean boots, virus scans, searched every forum maybe in existance and have found no soloution. I have 4gd DDR3 Ram (2x2gb sticks) and a 3.2ghz Quad Core AMD processor. Also i have noticed that my CPU usage is around 1 or 2% which is rather small isnt it? In my event log, i have been getting multiple errors relating to a bad block in my hard disk. This error repeats about every minute or so.

I finally got Virtual PC installed and checked out XP Mode. I also have recovered the harddrive from my old laptop (dual boot XP and Ubuntu), and am wondering if it is possible to load one of these systems into Virtual PC via USB, instead of creating a virtual drive with a completely new system and re-instaling all applications.

I've got problems with my work laptop and impending hardware failure. Nothing too serious, just a dodgy fan - but the machine has to get sent away for repair (company policy, not a fat lot I can do about it). What would be great is if I can take a complete image of this machine and then run it in a VM on my desktop machine. Importantly the machine name needs to present itself as the same for me to be able to connect it to the domain over vpn. Both machines are win7x64, enterprise on the laptop and professional on the desktop. The laptop is an intel quad core with 8gb, the desktop a quad core amd with 16gb.Can anyone tell me if this is doable, or by any chances point me to an idiots guide on how to achieve it? This has come a really inopportune time, if ever there were a good time for a hw failure

About 6 months ago I bought an HP laptop that came with 7HP 64 bit. I dual booted it with Linux and everything worked great until... Last week Windows crashed. Linux still worked fine and I was able to pull all of my documents off of the Windows partition and save them on the Linux partition. I tried everything I could to recover Windows. The HP discs that I purchased with the laptop, the Macrium disc I made, the HP recovery partition, anti-virus rescue discs, Hiren's BCD and a Windows 7 HP disc I borrowed from a friend. Nothing would repair it. Now I'm at a crossroads. I primarily use Linux on this machine and would like to simply run 7 as a VM. When I try this it will only run as 32 bit and the activation code will not work. Since this is on the same physical machine that 7 originally came on is there any way to activate my copy of Windows on the VM? I'm hoping to not have to buy a $100 license when I just bought a new laptop that came with 7HP.

I am running a pretty good PC, with Windows Home Premium x64. All of a sudden I have noticed a sudden drop in my computers responsiveness and so I tried to figure out what was wrong. So I looked at task manager and noticed a high phyiscal memory usage, and then preceded to do all the regular stuff of scan with MalwareBytes, turn off unwanted services and start up programs. Nothing seems to be working. Here is a screenshot of task manager and resource manager.
I just don't understand what is using up all the memory.

Why does my laptop use around 2-3GB of physical memory for NOTHING.
I know my skype, Msn, and TS3 lauch on laptop start, but that should be just about it.
Atleast form anything that takes much memory. Even those 3 dont take much.
i just turn it on and it instantly uses that MUCH OF IT.
How do i reduce it!

This has been going on for about a week now, where my physical memory spikes from a solid 20-30% to 90-96% and just makes my laptop completely unusuable. I currently have 4GB of RAM, so I KNOW it's not an issue with lack of memory. I've investigated this to the point where's it's really starting to drive me mad. I've been using VLC for a good 6 months and this happens all of a sudden, now I can't even use VLC in fear of slowing my laptop to a crawl. I've tried Malwarebytes, scanning for viruses (In safe mode and clean boot), re-installed VLC TWICE, updated everything I could think could be causing the issue, checked the resource monitor each time the spike occurs to see what service could be causing the issue, only to find nothing.

My computer will randomly decide to put up this Blue Screen and tell me it is dumping the physical memory. It says that I should make sure I did not download any new software and to make sure everything is updated. So, Ihad not put anything new on my computer recently so kind of ignored that part. I went through and updated the programs I was using while it crashed (mozilla firefox, internet explorer, itunes) and yet it still keeps crashing. It just crashed a few minutes ago while loading up a game.
I was trying to isolate what program is doing this but it seems any of them pretty much bring it on. Also, it seems Mozilla now freezes randomly when opening a new tab or trying to load a page for about 10-15 seconds and show a white screen saying (Not responding) on top. It usually fixes itself but this will sometimes lead to the blue screen. There is a mention of the BIOS memory and I should take off caching and shadowing. Not sure what to do and how would I access the BIOS memory if this is the next step?

I have a problem in booting my computer. It is Windows 7 64 bit laptop, from Dell. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my computer separately. When I try to boot my computer, it runs into a blue screen. The blue screen disappears very quickly and then the computer will restart again. I guess the last line of the blue screen is something like physical memory dump.
I tried to boot my computer in safe mode, but it stops at CLASSPNS.SYS. I have also tried to use the startup repair, but in vain. I can't do system recovery because it doesn't have a recovery point. I used the Dell diagnosis tool and ran some tests. It seems that the diagnosis tool can't detect my hard drive. But it is a little bit strange to me because I can access files in my Windows 7 using Ubuntu.
