Windows Hangs Up / Won't Start Due To Constant HDD Thrashing

Sep 21, 2012

A few days ago I awoke my Toshiba laptop in the morning, only to find it hanging up with continuous HDD activity. After a while I did a hard shutdown and tried to restart, but the HDD activity continued, and after an hour of trying, it was barely past the start screen - zero chance of any useful activity.

It performs normally in command prompt, and I can barely get it booted in safe mode (HDD thrash eventually stops until I ask it to do anything). Task manager doesn't show any unusual processes or services, but the resource monitor does show the HDD activity. Chkdsk (thru command prompt) on the X and D partitions came out fine, but on the C drive it doesn't even get to 1% and slows to about 1 file/minute. I attempted a Start Repair, but it said nothing was wrong. Tried a System Restore, but for some reason no restore points could be found.

The HDD seems to be performing OK (I'm using robocopy/cmd prompt to copy all I can to an external HDD), with only the occasional I/O error. It's possible I caught a virus, although I'm generally cautious (Ad-Aware antivirus, all updates ASAP, regular scans with this and Malwarebytes).

I'd really, really like to find a way out of this without a complete reformat. I've tried stopping everything I could in Safe Mode, but to no avail. Also tried to uninstall my AV software (and anything else that seemed to be running at startup), but was denied there as well.

Constant Soft Hangs, Freezes, No BSOD?

Jun 8, 2012

I just did some upgrades to my pc. Here are the current specs:

Motherboard: Crosshair V
CPU: AMD FX 6100
GPU: eVGA GTX 680 HC
RAM: 4x4GB Ballistix Tactical Tracer
PSU: Corsair 750Watt
OS: Windows 7 x64 Clean Install
HD: WDC-WD2500KS-00MJB0

Like it says above, this is a clean install. I have tested the RAM with Memtest86+ for 8 hours and found no errors. I have tested the HD with Seatools and found no errors. I have run Prime95 for hours without errors. I water cool my CPU and GPU and temps max at 37C.The OS constantly hangs, freezes, or whatever its called NONSTOP. Most of the time I'm able to move the mouse but can't DO anything with it. Eventually (within minutes) it comes back to life and does everything I'd been trying to do while it was frozen. I don't get much time inbetween freezes (a minute max between freezes). I've reinstalled the OS several times and no joy. At first I thought it was a bad motherboard, so I RMA'd it and it is still having the same issue. These freezes began happening well before video drivers were even installed (or any other drivers for that matter). It even does the same thing in SAFE MODE.from the EVENT VIEWER:

In the last hour: 19 Service Control Manager Error 7001
In the last hour: 44 amd_sata Warning 129 (this one always comes in pairs and always 30 seconds apart)
In the last hour: 169 Service Control Manager Information 7036

Thrashing External HDD After Delay?

May 19, 2011

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on a new Asus laptop. I have multiple external USB 2.0 HDDs connected to this laptop via a powered USB hub, one a 2TB Fantom Greendrive and a second a 1TB archive drive. The 2TB drive is my multimedia drive, and contains most of my MP3 files, graphics files and other non-application and backup stuff. I use the 1TB drive as a secondary backup. Both are left connected to the hub at all times. This PC is hooked to a keyboard/monitor which is shared with a second computer (a Macbook) via a KVM switch.

What's happening is that after about 28 minutes of inactivity, the Fantom HDD begins to rapidly click as something begins thrashing the drive. This usually happens while I'm working on the Macbook, so the Asus is receiving no input form my keyboard/mouse (the KVM switch has switched to the Macbook). If I click back to the Asus laptop via KVM switch, the clicking immediately stops.

I've checked the system monitor and I don't see any corresponding spikes in memory usage for the time immediately preceding the switch back to the Asus laptop via the KVM switch, nor has any of my multiple antivirus or malware scans (AVG, Avira and MalwareByte's Anti-Malware) detected any infection. I also checked to make sure that the thrashing is not the result of any automated antivirus scans (all are set to on-demand scanning) or automated backups (disabled - I back all files up manually).

Last, thinking this might be caused by something lurking in my screensaver, I disabled all screensavers and the behavior continued. It seems to happen a few minutes after the when the "Turn Off Display" from power management is invoked - I have power management set to turn off my display at 20 minutes and the thrashing seems to begin about 8 minutes after that (??). This seems like something that would be the hallmark of malware ("start activities only when the monitor is switched off so the user can't see what's happening"), but all my scans come up clean.

I'm not so much worried that some piece of malware is scanning me (although I still think that's possible), as I don't hear the main C: drive being thrashed, nor is the other 1TB drive being thrashed - I'm more concerned about the drive getting trashed/worn out over time due to all the activity.

Ive noticed that MSE seems to do a hidden scan after you boot up and get to the desktop. Doesnt always do it but sometimes. Is there a way to prevent it from doing this?

There is no option in the MSE interface and I cant see any option in task scheduler.

Windows 7 Hangs On Restart But Not Shut Down Or Start

Nov 29, 2012

I'm at my whit's end with this. My PC shuts down fine but hangs on restart. It does this is both safe and normal mode. It appears to hang right before the HD would get turned off. The SHUTTING DOWN screen proceeds fine and the HD stops it's activity, the screen goes black (the HD light stays) and it just hangs there. Pressing the RESET button on the PC starts it up fine. If I am restarting from some utility (for example when installing Windows) it can hang with the RESTARTING WINDOWS screen.

Computer Hangs At Start-up AND Setup?

Sep 30, 2011

I have a teensy problem in the form of a computer hang up.After running a disk check when my primary drive (C) did not appear in the computer's defrag list, my computer began to lag badly. After a crash, it then hung at the Starting Windows screen. Assuming repair or reinstall of the OS was needed, I popped in my installation disk. It get so far as the "Setup is Starting" screen before it hung (further emphasized by the sound of the in-use CD/DVD drive ceasing activity noise).I'm completely stumped at this point and have no funds to get myself a replacement laptop, and it's an item in my possession that is sorely needed

- Install from USB flash (not even working)
- Fix boot system (from command prompt using windows repair cd)
- Re-install windows 32 bits (same problem)
- boot in Safe mode (same problem it reboots again and again)

Constant Refresh Windows / Menus

Nov 17, 2011

I have 7, 64 bit, running on an HP and have been keeping pretty up to date on my drivers.amd a4 3300 processor with graphics card, and 4 g ram. When trying to use menus, the window or entire screen will seem as though it refreshes, closing the menu, i can watch the bar across the top of windows flash as if it had just disappeared for a split second and the menu is gone, leaving me to reopen it, but at a second or less between these refreshes I have to be quick on the pointer to get to what I want. It seems to happen on any menu item, including all drop downs, wether im right clicking a start menu pined item, a choice dropdown on a webpage, a setting dropdown, etc. it doesnt alwasys do this but more often than not. It seems like I can sometimes restart the pc and it will work, but it often will do it right at startup. I hadnt noticed it til I connected the VGA out AND the HDMI out to the same tv (dont know why I did it at the same time, I think to compare the cropping). Also, I used system restore to go back to before a bunch of updates and it seemed to fix it, but that might just be because the pc restarted in the process.

Windows 7 Constant Freezes & Not Responding?

May 22, 2012

I recently upgraded my existing PC with a new hard drive (WD 1TB Caviar Black), Windows 7 Ult x64, & upped my mobo to its max of 16 GB DDR3 RAM.I originally had problems after install with some of my partitions & hard drives not showing but everything worked itself out alright. However, now a new problem has cropped up, and I'm not entirely sure if its related to the original issue or if it is a whole new problem.Almost any program that I run will work for a time, but eventually stop responding. When I try to close the program, I will get a message from windows asking if I would like to end the process tree. This happens with everything, from Chrome to the League of Legends installer to Windows Explorer. If I hit yes, nothing will happen except for the "wait" cursor will appear, and my taskbar will completely disappear. It will usually catch up eventually, but I actually had to reset my computer during the LoL install, and Windows would not start up afterwards. I had to reinsert my Windows 7 disk and repair the installation.

Nothing I seem to do can fix this. All drivers are up to date, as are all Windows 7 updates. I upgraded from Windows XP, and tbh, at this point I'm regretting it.My system specs are as follows:[CODE]

Constant 30% CPU Usage In Windows 7 When Idle

Aug 31, 2012

I'm having a problem where windows utilizes 30% of CPU usage even when Idle. The problem starts when i open a program like games or any intensive application that requires alot of CPU load. But after closing the program, i noticed in my taskbar that windows generates and continues to use up to 30% of CPU load on other applications for example Dwm.exe (desktop windows management) but if i stop DWN.exe from taskbar, another program or service will replace it and generates the same CPU load, if i stop that another will take its place like svchost or the taskbar.exe itself getting a 25 to 27 cpu load. Its like an ongoing cycle or Loop of CPU usage, its supposed to stop after closing programs.I already have done steps i thought would clear this problem and these are:

Registry fix
ran Avast Anti-virus
reset BIOS
ran anti malware programs
ran Msconfig and disabled unwanted programs running on the background
ran windows 7 update
updated all my drivers

Summary:The problem still persist. This problem doesnt occur after boot, everything is fine with my system idle getting 97%. it only starts after i ran a program that utilizes high CPU load but after closing it, the heavy CPU load continues by replacing the closed program with another either dwm.exe,taskmanager.exe,svchost.exe..etc

constant boot problems about 70% of the time, and Win 7 launches are dicey. Sometimes the computer freezes while showing the Desktop. Constant BSODs On Sony Vaio, Windows 7 Ultimate 3- Bit?

Jun 1, 2011

I've been having troubles for a month or two now and decided to finally take my woes to the internet in the hopes someone could help me, before I consider giving up and buying a new laptop.I had troubles first running Windows 7 Home x64, now I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I have a Sony VAIO laptop, 500 GB hard drive.I first had problems after running a Malwarebytes scan - I ran it overnight and when I woke up my screen was black and said "Operating system not found" or something to that effect. From then on, my computer would only boot about once in every 4 times I tried. I ran startup repair many times, and when I did get in things ran very slowly and inevitably I would get an abrupt BSOD. This persisted for a month or so. Some days it worked great, but always went back to the usual.A few days ago I bought a hard drive enclosure, got all the files off my hard drive, and totally formatted my hard drive. Then, after some difficulties in the installation, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit, because a family member had the disc for it.The computer worked a lot better at first but now again it's running slowly and I'm starting to get the BSOD! Sometimes I can use it 5 minutes before I get the BSOD, sometimes I have 2 hours. It's been hard to write this because it keeps BSODing while I was typing.I set it to not restart when it crashes, so I could write down the error messages I got on the BSOD. The second to last series of numbers is the only thing that changes BSOD-to-BSOD. Here are the codes (I skipped the middle part, which is text and all the same) for the last 4

Regular BSOD During Busy Tasks And Constant WoW Crashes Since Windows 7

Jan 20, 2013

I built my own computer last January and installed Windows Vista first and everything worked fine but then I upgraded to Windows 7.In the beginning it worked great, I did get the common problem of every kind of browser crashed every couple of hours and sometimes refused to load up again but i persist and put up with it.Then over the past 3-4 months, I have been getting regular BSOD - They used to be very similar screens and i am not fast enough to jott down the error codes sadly.I maybe receive 2-3 BSoD everyday and the most common issue i am experiencing is when i play World of Warcraft - since these BSoD began, this has been crashing a hell of a lot as well. I cant get an hours play on it without it crashing with the same issue.I put it to the forums with this error log Wow Crash 2/1/13 - Pastebin.com and was told to carry out some actions to see if this could resolve the matter which it did for a very short period of time (ie a day) and then came back with its constant WoWcrashes and BSoD

The BSoD happen when im on and off the game - a lot of the time its when a lot of processes are running, ie several tabs open in my browsers, spotify playing and maybe a couple of folders open - its as if it cant handle it running.I have tried to search for my dumplogs, i was told it was in %systemroot%minidump but its empty and there are no .dmp files on my computer except warcraft ones.
