Windows Update Won't Update, Stuck At 0%?
Oct 25, 2012
My windows update does not like to load! It takes a very long time and sometimes causes explorer to crash! When I checked, I had 92 updates to install. When I click download and install, it would freeze and stay there for a long time. I tried to use the Fix it application, however that gets stuck on "Checking Online for Updates" as well! What should I do? I also tried to update in safe mode, but it wouldn't let me.

I noticed the little windows update avatar on the bottm right on my Windows 7, so decided to check out what the updates are and selected the 1 important update, and 1 optional. Then, it appeared that the update initiated, but only stated 0% complete and 0 data downloading. I waited for about 15 minutes, still nothing and then shut the program down and rebooted. After I rebooted, it took almost 3 times as long to boot up to my desktop. It starts up as normal with the cmos info etc., then the standard blue windows default opening screen with the little circle (like the old hour-glass) showing that something is happening, then the screen goes black for a few minutes, then finally boots up to the desktop. Next, I tried to manually go to the control panel and scroll down to windows updates, when I click on it, all it does is get stuck and I am unable to close the windows update window either manually or through task manager. I eventually have to restart in order to get rid of the windows and control panel windows.

i just installed a clean copy of genuine windows 7 home premium. I let it update and what not but after coming back to look at the computer from awhile of being out, I realized it had been stuck on installing one of the updates (at least 20 had already been successfully installed). I figured i'd stop it and restart the comp and let it continue. Now it won't download any updates it just gets stuck at 0% everytime no matter what updates i pick. I'm using wireless internet but I even tried while it was connected straight up with the ethernet cable for optimum internet speed and still stuck at 0%. I've tried rebooting multiple times but still nothing. I am really trying to avoid having to reinstall the OS again.

Shut down my computer as usual and windows update started, but this time, it gets stuck at 4/40 o.o it's been well over 3 hours now and I have stuff to do, what should I do? The first response I got elsewhere was that the update will just restart if I unplugged, but then I did more research and it seems that I might likely get a corrupted windows... What should I do now?

It got stuck at 15%. So I rebooted into Safe Mode, tried System Restore. It failed, so I tried System Recovery Options, that failed too. Then I rebooted it regularly and it tells me that, in fact, System Restore worked. Now what do I do? (Besides backup my stuff.) Try to update Windows manually or do I need to do something before that?

My laptop is a 1 year old Toshiba Satellite. I've had this problem long enough to forget when it started. I haven't been able to complete a full Windows update because of this problem. I searched for KB2251489 and it said that someone had called and was told this problem was going to be fixed, but the last post in that thread had been in June. Has there been a fix to this yet?

Ok over the past week or so windows has been installing the same 3 updates every night! Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit
So I checked to see if they failed and they were installed successfully!
I have ran 3 different MS Fixit things to no avail. I have tried to update the PC manually however it does not go past 0% on installing the updates it just says preparing updates.
I tried adding 2 optional updates to make it 5 and manually clicking update however it sticks on 0% downloading updates.
I am usually pretty good at troubleshooting and fixing PC problems however this one I am defeated! I do not want to restore if possible, will this take away ANY of my files e.g work I have done I have never had to do it before!

I updated my computer last night with this update [KB2744842]. This morning I tried to open windows 7, but it gets stuck in the opening animation. I went into safe mode and try to do system restore, but all the restore points disappeared.... Finally, I tried "Advanced startup options" and chose Last Known Good Configuration (advanced). With this I was finally be able to boot into Windows 7 64-bit, but now my internet would not work either Ethernet or wifi.
I have tried:
netsh winsock rest catalog
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Nothing works...

I ran into a problem on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my MSI CR700x notebook a few weeks ago. For some reason, when logging in, after entering my password, I was stuck at the Welcome screen, that blue "waiting cursor" was still circulating, but nothing happened even after 10 minutes.Sometimes I didn't even get to the login screen, because after the "Starting Windows" screen, I was stuck at a black screen, where only the mouse cursor was shown. In both cases, the only way to quit was to shut down the computer using the power button. (in safe mode I could log in without problems)To workaround, I booted up from the recovery CD, and chose System Restore. I could only choose restore points related to Updates, after this, I could boot up and log in one time (!), however, after a second restart the same problem occured, and to even use the PC I needed to do a system restore from the recovery CD before each start. Automatic updates were turned on. After a few days I've had enough of it, so I decided to reinstall Windows, but after 3-4 days the same problem occured again. (updates were still turned on). So for a few weeks I even went back to XP. Now I have Windows 7 installed again, but with Automatic Updates turned off, and the system is working properly for a week now.But I don't want to keep Automatic Updates turned off. Which update causes these problems, and how to uninstall/disable it? Or is there a fix for that since then if it's a known/popular problem?

I'm out of ideas. I've been running Win 7 on this machine for more than a year without issues in updating etc. Now it will not search or update/install critical items. I'm running Symantec (even tried turning the firewall off without any success). I get an error code 80072F7C. When I run hijackthis, I get an error message that my system denied write access to the Hosts file. I proceed with the scan but am unable to produce a log file. I've included a screenshot from the windows update error as well as the error I get when trying to run hijack this.

The update is called:
nvidia - Graphics adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M.
After installing it, whenever my laptop tries to use the Nvidia card, I get a blue screen and the system restarts. I looked in installed updates to uninstall it, and it is not there. I did a system restore to four days before I installed it, and I still get the same effect. Lastly, I installed some older nvidia drivers that used to work using the clean install option, and I still have this problem.

A while back, after successfully downloading and installing some updates in the Windows Update, it prompted me to restart the computer to finish the update installation process. However, I continued to use the computer for quite some time before restarting it, and then when it tried to configure the updates on the start-up screen, it showed that it was not successful in doing so. In the past, I noticed that this would typically happen when I did not restart the computer immediately (or within a short time) after the updates finished and I got the prompt to restart. I would have to go to Windows Update and do it over again, and then upon immediate restart, it would always work properly. But this time, it did not, and I keep getting the 8000FFFF error message instead.
Also, now, every time I start the computer, it shows that it's "Preparing to configure Windows... Do not shut off computer" (presumably the updates that never got completely and correctly configured) in the start-up screen... gets to 35%..fails... shuts down (screen goes black)... restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, shuts down and restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, and finally it apparently gives up and says "reverting changes" and finally goes to the desktop.I've looked at the answers in several threads at the answers.microsoft.com forum that were started by people with similar problems, and also tried several of the Microsoft "FixIt" files on the Microsoft site, but none of them worked. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.

I just received a brand new laptop less than 24 hours ago. It's an HP, 4 gig RAM, Windows 7 pre-installed, etc.I was using it all night on the internet, putting my music collection on iTunes, etc. I had a lot of fun and was very impressed with this laptop. The second time I turned on the computer (the first being the initial install), Windows Updates was configuring and installing all of these automatic updates that it downloaded the first time I turned off the computer. I couldn't believe my eyes, it actually said it was configuring over 22,000 updates after I booted it up. Yes, THOUSAND. This went on for less than half an hour. Then it went to "installing" the updates, which had a progress bar that reached 100% in maybe 5 minutes. Then it was "starting Windows".Then it got hung up on a blue "bird" desktop background that said Windows 7 Premium at the bottom. The mouse was completely moveable but there was absolutely no action I could take. I left it like this for 30 minutes thinking, "well, it's just installing, but it really should give me a progress bar so I know what the hell is happening."At the 45 minute mark, I couldn't take it anymore. I called HP (the manufacturer of the laptop) for support. The guy asks me for the serial number, and I regretfully wasn't pleasant. I think I said "serial number? I haven't even owned this computer for 12 hours yet!"Anyway, he had me force a shutdown. And then upon booting the computer, I got the "this computer wasn't shut down properly". This is complete BS for a computer that even as I write this, hasn't been in my possession 24 hours yet. I am returning this piece of crap, but I want to know how can I prevent this from happening to the next computer I purchase. Is it necessary to not use Windows Updates, because whoever made these has their head up their ***? I mean "configuring 22,687 updates" on a brand new, 64-bit Windows 7 machine?

OK, first I have to say I am a complete piker with this stuff. If I have to do anything that requires changing the BIOS or registry or anything like that, I am gonna have to pay someone to fix this.OK, here is my problem. Windows update fails with a code 8007370B. I have Windows 7 Pro, a Dell XPS 9100 with 16GB RAM, which I added, as well as a Asus ENGTX460 Top video card. The system has worked great with this configuration for well over a year. I use MSE as security, and Zone Alarm for the firewall.I have been getting this code since October. I tried doing the windows troubleshoot and fix links, I tried Fixit, I tried System Restore, nothing worksThe system also says under last time updated "Never" and it displays no record

My Samsung series 3 laptop has been sending out popup messages telling me I need a bios update, I go to the Samsung software update site and this bios update has been failing, I have made several calls and chats to techs at Samsung who tell me to do what I have already done, they tell to ask for tier 2 tech, who can go in my computer and fix it , When I finally got a tier 2 tech, they told me the same thing, I told him what I had been told about him and what he could do, He said, is it working , I said yes, but settings on computer change on their own, like wifi turns itself on and that concerns me. Anyway, He said that it didn't need a bios update, even the Samsung website said this computer needed a bios update. I posted this on hardware, firmware concerns, and they told me to post here, I was going to go to a site ,that had a download that checked drivers,

Win 7 x64 update KB2656351 seems to download and install smoothly, but within a few minutes it wants to update again and again. It doesn't matter how many times I update. It doesn't ask for rebooting, but if I do it doesn't make a difference either.

I did an update of Windows last week, which included two critical fixes (I think both were related to .NET) and two "optional" security updates. I updated, rebooted, and now Windows Update no longer works: the icon is missing from the menu item, and when I click it nothing happens. The Windows Update service is running; tried restarting that as well. Tried a .NET cleanup utility, but all that seemed to do was remove or break one of the .NET version installations (a game that uses .NET complained after running the utility, and stopped complaining after I manually re-installed .NET 3.5 and updates).

I recently went from Windows XP to Windows 7. I followed all instructions and completed the change. Now my display is so huge it does not fit on the screen. From readiing post on here, it seems that this is aproblem with the graphics driver? I have followed all suggestions and cannot change anything by right clicking on the desktop. The setting is on 100% and I have 800x600 256 color which will not allow me to change it. I have a Gateway E52 300X, serial # 0031758993 desktop with a Brookdale GGreaphics Chip Acceleration VGA BIO, 8 Bit, 0.0, 832 KB, I have tried to update via intel website but cannot even get the site to check my computer for updates because the internet explorere stops working when I try. And, I have tried many times, I have an Itel Celeran CPU 2.40 GHZ with 2 GB of ram. I would like to increase the speed on this computer but don't even know what to do or if this is all related. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Oh, also, my on screen text as I am typing now is purple and green???
