Windows 7 Re-activation After Motherboard Upgrade

Mar 27, 2012

I recently had to upgrade motherboards in one of my computers, resulting in Windows 7 asking to re-validate. I still have the disk, but all of the licenses on it are used up. Is there any way to get another license key without paying the $100 for a new copy of Windows?

Install is Home Premium from an OEM machine. I read that this doesn't give you access to Microsoft tech support, so is the option of calling and requesting a new one not possible?

FREE UpGrade Needs Activation

Sep 5, 2009

I fired up the old Pent-III 600mhz x86 box earlier to update the AVG antivirus, since it had not been turned on in about 30 days.

I got so involved downloading Captain Zero's HD WallPapers & browsing the threads today, that I had forgot it was running in the other room. When I went over to it, the screen says need to be activated. Wait a minute, this was RC 7229 x86. That should still be good until 2010 ? So I got out the trusty RC Key code, & typed it in. Clicked on activate. A few minutes go by, then not a valid key! What

So then I went to Start & typed in Winver 7600

Did Microsoft just update this RC Build 7229 ??

Not to be outdone by Microsoft, I just got out my legit list of TechNet keys & typed one in. Click on activate. Whoah this sure was slow, about 5 minutes

Shaaaazaaammmmmm Activated

I guess The Future came Back to The Present !

Hardware Upgrade - Win 7 Activation

Dec 6, 2009

Am about to upgrade my computer with new motherboard and CPU. I am already running Windows 7 on my current system. Is there a way to preserve my license key or am I going to have a problem upon reactivation? Obviously I need to do a fresh install to get all the new drivers and such. Just wondering what pain I am in for with Windows 7 activation. I know there was a tool out there for Vista to backup license key, but could not find one for W7. Does one exist?

Student Upgrade On Virtual Machine - Activation

Nov 3, 2009

I have Windows XP Pro on a Boot Camp partition of my Mac Book Pro. I have gone through the arduous process of creating an .iso file and have installed Windows 7 into a new virtual machine. It is a clean install since there was nothing else there. Now I cannot get past the activation screen, where I re-enter the Product Key, whether the activation check box is filled in or not, I get an error.

Any ideas about 1 - what is the source of the problem?

2 - how to deal with it?

New Motherboard, Can't Upgrade To Windows 7?

Jan 3, 2013

I recently built my new computer with a friend, and I used the Hard drive and Graphics card from my old one, which had windows Vista. When we finally finished, I popped in my Windows 7 disc and selected upgrade. It tells me that I need to restart my computer normally and run it from there, but the problem is that I can't! I also don't have a Vista disc, so I can't repair my vista install, and I don't even know where to find Vista disc anymore. My only other option would be to install windows 7 but that would wipe my hard drive, and I haven't backed anything up.

Installing Upgrade Version Of Windows 7 On New Motherboard?

Aug 12, 2012

Just to be sure I am understanding the sticky above correctly, I wanted to ask a question.  My current PC has an OEM copy of windows XP. So I can go ahead and buy an upgrade version of Windows 7 for 119 instead of 200 for the full retail version and install it on my computer right? Then, when I buy a new motherboard soon, I can upgrade my computer and use the same windows upgrade version CD's to reinstall Windows on the upgraded computer right?

Some people have indicated that I will need to contact Microsoft but I couldn't determine if they meant the automated phone number used to activate Windows or if was another number?

Motherboard & CPU Upgrade Without Re-install?

Oct 8, 2011

I would like to upgrade my very old Conroe 1333-D667 motherboard currently fitted with a Pentium 4 3gig processor & Win 7 Ultimate. Could I have some suggestions as to what would be a reasonable new mobo upgrade with maybe something like an Intel (what type) dual core processor or suggested alternatives - I need the whole system to be a bit quicker. Most importantly though without having to re-install Win 7 in the process. I would probably have to stay with 32bit as this is what everything is now.The new board must have at least 1 IDE for my Plextor PX-870A DVD and at least 4 sata connections. There is so much stuff out there which makes the choice confusing.

Upgrade Motherboard Boot Failure?

I replaced the motherboard, CPU and Video card on a fully updated Win7 system. It is a dual boot with UBUNTU 11.10. Ubuntu works fine! windows wont boot. Startup repair finds no errors. I am thinking it is the hardware abstraction layer (HAL).I don't want to lose every thing, although I could use UBUNTU to copy files to another disk.

BSOD When PC Booting After Recent Upgrade Of Motherboard And CPU

Apr 24, 2012

I upgraded my pc components and now it will not start at all. As far as I can see all the bios settings are correct. On first start up a message come up first saying no disks found, then when I click onto the bios menu i have AHCI mode enabled and it detects SSD and CD drive absolutely fine. First I tried booting from original SSD with windows 7 already installed. Kept getting BSOD every time I get to windows loading screen.

Then after reading on forums people were re-installing windows back on to the SSD, but when trying to boot from the cd drive(yes its a bootable disc) nothing happens and it just goes to the windows repair screen then does nothing after attempting to repair. i have tried removing the SSD so only the cd drive is visible but then it comes up with the message "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key"

I have removed graphics card and tried on board graphics.
I have tried barebones.
I have tried new cables.
I have cleared Cmos + update

My Components:
Mobo: AsRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 (NEW)
CPU: intel core i3 processor LGA1155 (NEW)
Memory: Corsair Dominator 4GB 133mhz (TW3X4G1333C9D) (OLD)
PSU: Hyper 630w (OLD)
SSD: ocz sata 2.0 120gb (OLD) 1month old
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 460 (OLD) 1month old
Cooler: Corsair H80 (NEW)

All the old components were working previously.

Deactivating Windows 7 On One Computer And Activation On Another

Feb 26, 2012

What is the best course of action to transfer my retail lic. for Windows 7 home from one computer to another?

Here is the situation. I had Windows 7 on my Mac as a dual boot, and it was a upgrade from XP on the same partition on my Mac. I have since formatted and sold that Mac so Win. XP or 7 is no longer on it or anything.

I am building a new Windows machine I want to install XP on and then use my Win 7 home upgrade to install Win 7 on that machine. What is the best way to get XP and 7 deactivated from the old (nonexistent) Mac and reactivate on the new machine?

What a pain MS makes a simple situation. P.S. if I need to call MS what is the number?

Windows 7 Hacked For Keyless Activation

Nov 17, 2009

Windows 7 Hacked (Again) for Keyless Activation

Lo! Yet another Windows 7 activation hack appears. This one's a little more creative in that it doesn't require an OEM key at all, and instead bypasses the verification DLL completely.

The new hack nullifies sppcompai.dll, and even deactivates all the reminder popups that would otherwise ask you to activate indefinitely. But don't expect the party to last long. This crack closely mirrors an old Vista key workaround, and if Microsoft patched it easily then, they'll patch it easily now.

The crack is possible probably due to leniency allowed on the part of Microsoft on [the] activation mechanism to avoid getting too many false-positive or complaint on activation error

It just sucks that this game will continue. Microsoft obviously wants to make activation as painless as possible, but will probably beef up the security next time to fix these sort of exploits. Like most of you, I'm sick of DRM causing headaches for the ones who legally purchased the software, and developments like this certainly won't help.

Windows 7 OEM Re-activation Due To Hardware Crash/replacement?

May 26, 2012

1. I have 2 computers - one running Windows 7 Pro x64 (main computer for work and gaming) and the other running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (second computer)

2. Both Windows 7 installations are OEM.

3. The second computer has been sitting dead for close to a year because the motherboard died and I have not really wanted to spend money getting it running until now.

4. The route I am taking is to upgrade the main computer (motherboard, CPU, and RAM) and put the current "main" motherboard, CPU, RAM into the 2nd computer.

Logic would dictate that I ONLY upgrade the 2nd computer and make it the main computer. However, the Main computer has an SSD Hard Drive in it and the 2nd one does not. So, I'd prefer to keep the SSD HD for it's speed. That's why I've chosen this convoluted replacement process. There are other reasons for the convoluted process if you need elaboration let me know.I did see a person ask about upgrading and keeping their license. I'm not sure if Microsoft views reasons for hardware changes due to failure differently. I suppose it's a matter of luck?
