Windows 7 Has Wrong IP Address On Ping - XP Laptop Not Accessible By Name
Apr 30, 2012
Have read and tried everything here to get my Windows 7 PC to access my XP laptop using its name. Have 3 machines. 1 PC ( ip 192.168.0.102) and 2 XP Laptops (say LXP1 and LXP2), one is ...104 the other, the troublesome one, is ...101. If I ping the machine name: ping LXP2. I get the ping returning with the ip address of the PC (...102). If I try to access LXP2 from Windows 7 PC, in Network in explorer - I am asked for the Password for the share. If I use the ip address 192.168.0.101 in the address bar at the top of explorer ( //192.168.0.101), the shares open and I can access the machine correctly.
Why does ping on the Windows 7 PC return the address of the LXP2 laptop as 102 (the PC's address) but the LXP2 laptop IS correctly configured to have an address of 101 and it open on the PC with this address. This looks to me to be the reason that when trying to open the machine name (LXP2) on the PC in Network in explorer, it fails and askes for a password. The other laptop works perfectly every time. And the 2 laptops can 'see' the shares and access them on the PC. Both laptops can see each others shares and can be accessed. Its 'just' the Windows 7 PC to LXP2 access that appears faulty. I tried disabling 'Network Discovery' and that did briefly work. But this morning - its back to its old self again, will only work when using the ip address...

Last Friday my main desktop crashed (lost power to the machine) and on restarting the PC was unable to "identify" the network. By identify, I mean, when using "Network and Sharing Centre" on the basic network information page, the PC shows "Identifying" under "active networks" - no matter how long I leave the PC.
PC details
Model: Packard Bell Power x-30
Processor i7 870 @2.93GHz
RAM: 8GB
O/S: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Modem Router details
Netgear N300 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router
The main desktop is connected to the modem router (via Ethernet). The modem router is showing no sign of any problems itself, all the dashboard lights look ok (i.e. power is on, port 1 shows the Ethernet connection in place, both wireless bands are lit, the DSL is lit and so is the internet). The household contains a number of laptops which continue to work ok wirelessly and/or wired through Ethernet. Even mobile phones are accessing the wi-fi ok.
The DNS Server address looks ok, as that is the address of the web page to the router. I cannot access that web page (address) via the main desktop, but I can from other devices ok. Having gone through Device Manager the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is showing as "working properly". I have tried pinging the DNS Server address, and that fail. I have gone through a system restore to a previous point (before the day of the crash) but that seems to have made no difference either.
I have attempted to set the IP addresses (for TCP/IPv4) directly
IP address 192.168.0.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
And therefore forced to set the DNS Server address too
Preferred DNS server: 192.68.0.1
But I don't know what to set for the alternate DNS Server, so left blank. This seems to step me forward, in that the device/network is now identified. However the internet access is still not work, as the "DNS Server is not responding".

Today when I turned on my laptop, suddenly, there was a message that my battery has problems so the computer might shut down suddenly. I tried different strategies, like uninstalling the battery driver, or letting the computer completely die. When it turned off itself at 6%, I turned it back on, and it was at 2 minutes battery life. Then in a few minutes, it said 4 minutes battery life for 6%. Now, it's passed an hour, and it says 3 minutes, but changes sometimes to 1-4 minutes. The battery meter is completely wrong, and I don't know what to do since it is closing the computer way too early. I'm still not sure what the problem is.

I recently purchased a refurbished Sony Vaio PCG-6R3L with Windows 7.Everything was working fine, then I plugged in the USB plug for my wireless keyboard/mouse (Microsoft wireless optical desktop receiver 3.0A)I did not install anything for the keyboard, however windows automatically did something to get the keyboard to work (I think it downloaded the drivers automatically). From the wireless keyboard all the keys type exactly what they are supposed to, that's what I'm using to type this. I've used this keyboard on multiple computers, both with installing the software that came with it, and also just plugging it in, never caused this problem before. When I press and hold the FN key, all the keys type their regular symbol, however once I let go of the FN key they start printing the wrong symbol again.I did all kinds of searching online and went through all of the regional settings and such that I could find, and all the settings I could find were set to "united states english", which is also the only language/keyboard that I saw installed on the computer.

My internet connection shows 'no internet access' even though my ISP shows the connection is coming into the house just fine. I usually use a router (NetGear-WNR3500U) but I right now I have the Ethernet connection plugged directly into my PC. I tried directly plugging into my laptop and the internet works just fine. So I know the problem resides in the PC.
Some troubleshooting things I have tried.
-Power cycled my modem, router and PC.
-Repinged my connection from my ISP(Comcast Xfinity)
-Used the reset option on the router and the modem
-I was walked through the internet options needed with the tech support from my ISP to make sure DHCP was enabled and every other setting was correct, and he cleared me that all settings were correct.
-Tried ipconfig commands to /renew and /release my IP When I tried ipconfig /renew I get the error 'An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server'
-Restored my PC to a restore point where the Internet was working
All of these options did not work.
What I think the problem is and I am not sure how to fix it, when I run the ipconfig /all command my Auto configuration IPv4 Address shows 169.254.112.76 which I was told is a router IP address even though I am plugged directly from the modem to my PC with an Ethernet cord. So I think that's my problem? But I am not sure.

I have a problem setting up one of my office users with an exchange account. I bought two new laptops with windows 7. Joined them to our domain ok which is one DC windows server2003. Setup two domain accounts for the users and a mailbox exchange account. One of the laptops had no problem setting up a Outlook 2010 account. But the other laptop cannot find my mailserver i get error message "the action cannot be completed.
The connection to Micro exchange is unavailiable etc etc. How can this be if ive just setup the other laptop with an Outlook 2010 account. Also when i ping the server by IP on the problem laptop i get a reply no loss packets. BUT when i ping the server by name(FQDN)
I get a timed out reply. Also if i ping by any FQDN on the laptop in question same time out. The laptop that i sucsessfully setup has no problem pinging FQDN
Tried with firewalls off still no sucsess
I really stumped here as the two laptops are the same setup.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to troubleshoot this issue, as the user is waiting to work with this laptop. Is there a windows 7 setting i need to change for it to work in my 2003 server domain.

Ever since I installed Windows 7 on my PC a few months ago I've been getting consistent ping spikes on basically every game I play, but mostly on this one I'm playing most of the time. My ping will be a solid 20-22 for few minutes (often less and more often) when all of a sudden my ping spikes in the hundreds (150-400). Along with this, sometimes my UDP goes red. This never happened with XP, I'll even have the same game server on beside me with XP and I'll never see ping spikes. I've talked to other people who play the game and they experience the same thing, many of them for this very reason have decided to stick with XP for these particular game(s).Another thing that I've noticed since installing 7 is a delay (no better way to describe it, can't say it's lag since it says my ping is 20?). While on my XP PC 20 ping will feel just like that, 20 ping. On the 7, it feels like 50-70 (while saying 20). The game I play is very dependent on fast reaction times so this is obviously very annoying to me.

I have setup a test LAN with 4 computers, 3 running different versions of Ubuntu and one running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. Until three days ago I did not have a problem pinging between any of the computers. My project is build one of the Ubuntu boxes to be the gateway/router/firewall/VPN server for the LAN. On Thursday I suddenly could not ping the Win 7 box from any of the Ubuntu boxes. The Win 7 box can ping any of the Ubuntu boxes. But what is even worse, I no longer am able to connect via Putty from the Win 7 box to any of the Ubuntu boxes.
I have disconnected the LAN from internet access and turned off the firewall on each of the boxes. I have checked all network settings. I have searched the internet for an answer. All without success. The only clue I have to the cause of the problem is that on Wednesday night Windows 7 performed an automatic update. In my focus on building the gateway/router/firewall/VPN server I failed to do two critical things on the Win 7 box. Turn off automatic updates and create recovery points. How I can correct the ping and Putty problems short of reinstalling Win 7?

so yesterday at a lan party we decided to upgrade my mates ancient PC to Windows 7 from XP and the computer should have the specs for it and Windows 7 itself was/is running smooth. The first time I put up Windows Home Premium and installed the normal programs. I installed steam and downloaded Counter-Strike, and told my m8 to go play on a local server. And his ping going crazy. My MS is about 10-20 on a local server, but his jumps from 50-200ms, which is unbearable. Well after that we decided to back XP and went off to play, and now it was working perfectly. And the day after we put up a new Windows 7 Ultimate 86x. And again the same problem persists.

So when I do speedtest and select nearest host, I usually get 3 ping and (average) 75mbps. After installing windows 7, I recently found out that ping result always is 50, and download speed capped to like 55mbps.Also, I pinged a game I play with command prompt, I get about 165ms averagely on XP, and after Windows 7, it went up to 189-192.

I have installed windows XP mode for windows 7 and it works fine. I have even installed few apps that were not possible to be installed on win 7. I played with win 7 virtual PC and have few questions:
1. I see that system chosen 120 GB for this virtual Win XP, I was not asked about this and wonder if this could be changed. The originally C: system partition in win 7 is 300 GB.
2. When I use cmd command in run and type ipconfig, I see that correct IP address is displayed (192.168.1.65) since it works in private network and internet is working OK. But when I try to ping router (192.168.1.1) I get message that "request timed out" occurred. Of course, ping works in windows 7, and I have internet access in both win7 and virtual win xp.

I can access my files throguh Ubuntu. Back at windows, my options are less limited. I can't view the hard disk at all in Explorer, although it shows in Disk Manager. I can't make any changes to it. Trying to assign letters to it through command prompt returns errors. EaseUS partition manager also doesn't allow me to do anything with the partition I need. Partition recoverer returns an error when targeting this hard drive. I need the highlighted partition to be accessible through windows as it had programs installed on it and it's gone ahead and messed everything up.
I think one of the culprits, if not the culprit is the partition type, linux swap 0x82. However, when I try and change it, I get

Every time Microsoft updates Windows 7 it causes new problems on what's been a relatively stable Dell XPS8000. The latest update causes my DVD / CD drive (HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GH50N ATA Device) to be inaccessible! By running System Restore I've brought it back from the 'bit-bucket', but I'd really like to update the OS without having the updates screw something up. Previous updates have caused printer problems; Mouse problems (both running on USB ports); etc.
