Using Windows 7 In A Server Environment

Mar 18, 2011

run Windows 7 Enterprise in a Server environment. Windows Server 2008 costs more than double, and both OS'es have their own IIS manager for deploying websites.

All the server roles available in Windows Server 2008 will probably not be used. So is there any downside in using Windows 7. Please be thorough in why or why not Windows 7 should be used.

How To Set Up Such A Dual Boot Environment Using Same Windows 7 License

I've read the great tutorials for many dual boot options.Though I am missing one (at least I have not found it).I am seeking advice about installing 2 versions of Windows 7 possibly on one disk to boot from with the bootmanager. One version for productive use and the other version sort of as a sandbox to play and try apps and things. Is there a tutorial or advice how to set up such a dual boot environment using the same Windows 7 license?

Windows 7 Startup Error Failure To Initial Environment (MFC)?

May 18, 2012

When I start Windows 7 about 30 seconds after the login, I see an error message popping up that says: "Failed to initial environment". In the task bar I see the an icon that writes MFC, which is the program that gives the error message. I looked in my task manager under processes if I see MFC, but there is nothing like this. I am using Windows 7 64 bit.Does anyone have an idea what that would be?Here are 3 screen shots, which show the error and all processes running in my task manager.

Computer Is Not In A Domain Environment

Apr 25, 2012

The computer is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit edition version 6.1 Build 7601 service pack 1. The computer is not in a domain environment. I believe this may be a security issue however I completed an in-place windows 7 upgrade to try and fix the problem but after all of the windows updates, etc the error remains and appears every time the computer is rebooted..[code] The relevant status code says that the "Object already exists" which I think is far more relevant then some memory issue. Do I have to delete some file or registry entry? Or is it a security issue?

Running A 4/6 Screen Environment

Dec 13, 2009

Basically my question is, what's the best way of running a 4/6 screen windows 7 environment?

The detailed question is:-

I've just got a Dell XPS 8000 with a Nvidia GT 220 in it.

I'd like to run at least 4 19 inch screens. On my previous system (XP Pro 64 bit) I added a second PCI graphics card, which allowed me to run the 4 screens.

It's not for gaming, it's for developing, so I just need a lot of desktop real estate, more than 3D rendering power.

(Btw, I went for win 7 pro, due to the XP Pro Virtual machine, allowing me to run the 32bit cisco VPN client I need, in a 64 bit environment).

I installed the old PCI card I had a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200, but this seems to cause an issue with the GT220 card and the device manager reports it's stopped working (error code 43. I've googled it, seems a pretty generic error code, from what I can tell I think it's installing xddm drivers, which is the problem with wddm driver needed). I remove the card it BSOD's windows is unable to repair it, and I have to go back to a system restore point.

I see I have 2 spare PCIe x1 slots and a PCI slot on my motherboard.

Any suggestions?

Ideas I've toyed with are

1. Buy a PCIe x1 graphics card, possibly a quad card(but which one, nvidia or non nvidia)

2. Buy another PCI Graphics card, possibly a quad card( again which one? )

3. Can I spilt the HDMI and DVI outputs to give me 4 screens of 1280x1024. (or even 3 screens)

4. Scrap the GT 220, buy a PCI x16 card, then get another dual PCIe x1 card.(going to be very expensive I think).

Created Folder Only Showing Up In DOS Environment?

Sep 29, 2011

I am attempting to write a batch file and I have run into several issues with the Windows 7 command interpreter. But this one has me completely baffled. In testing my batch file, I typed the command at the cmd line. This is my command:

Start /wait /b Robocopy "%USERPROFILE%My Documents" C:\% COMPUTERNAME% /S /E /M /COPYALL /ZB

When I run this command from the prompt it appears that it worked. But the created folder does not appear in the Windows 7 explorer environment. If I try to manually create this folder again, it tells me the folder already exists. If I do a dir of the root of C:, it shows the folder.... but ony in the DOS environment. Yes, I have changed the folder/file views and allowed system and hidden files to be shown.I have searched the other forums and I have seen nothing posted regarding this type of problem.

System Could Not Find Entered Environment Option

May 8, 2011

I think I have some kind of malware. I am unable to use many functions on my computer, I always get the same error message "C:windowssystem32 strui.exe. The system could not find the environment option that was entered." I can't open system restore, because I get that same error message. I think its any .exe operations that I cannot use. My malware program won't open normally but when I tried it in safe mode, it didnt find any problems.

I also tried system restore in safe mode and from the boot screen, and it told me system protection was turned off, so I tried to turn it back on and the security tab that was needed to do this was missing. I don't have the windows 7 install disc because it was a factory install. I can't install any new programs and now I keep getting error messages saying I may have counterfeit software. In the bottom right corner of the desktop it says "Windows 7 Build 7600 This copy of Windows is not genuine".

64-bit Not Running Batch Files/Path Environment?

May 17, 2011

I recently got a new laptop running Win 7 Pro 64-bit and as part of my initial third-party software installations I inadvertently overwrote the 'Path' environment variable (instead of appending to it). I subsequently tried adding c:windowssystem32; to it but don't know if this is doing anything. I have not managed to find any definitive information on what the Path ev should be on a new Windows 7 64-bit install. The thing is I loaded a batch process which I had on another Win 7 (32-bit) system but when I key the bat filename in cmd.exe (without the extension or double-click it) I get this error:"The syntax of the command is incorrect."If I key the bat filename with the extension, it runs but then stops because it seems not to recognize another program which the bat file calls even though I have the Path ev set for that program.

Chage Environment Variables For Documents And Settings Directory?

Jan 4, 2013

I originally came to this idea after wondering "Could I install windows on a wireless external hard drive?"But quickly realized that a wireless hard drive probably would not be detected during bios, and needs windows to run.I'm wondering though, if the environment variables of windows could be modified, so that when you run software that uses these variables to store temp data etc, it would be sent to an identical network drive, instead of the directory windows is actually installed on.Can this be achieved with some changes to the registry? And would the changes cause any problems with windows itself?Basically I want to trick windows into thinking that the entire "documents and settings" folder, is on the wireless drive. Not C: (windows installed drive).

Could Not Create Work File Check Temp Environment Error Will NOT Go Away?

I am running Windows 7 64 bit and Office 2007 and one day I get the error "Outlook could not create the work file check the temp environment". The error itself was of no help but after searching and searching I found supposed "fixes". I have tried a number of them but then I shut down the computer for the day and the next day the error is back.I will email you a beer or something.I have tried:Deleting all files in the temporary folders since one "fix" noted a full folderChecking the HKEY in regedit.exe and all was well with %userprofile%local settingemporary internet files so the suggestion was to change to "temp" instead of temporary internet files.I went into Internet Explorer tools and moved the folder per another "fix"I went to regedit and changed CACHE value to c:wi

Disc ASUS Recovery Error 1029, Cannot Boot Into That Recovery Partition

Jun 23, 2012

I've gotten to the point where I need to just reinstall windows completely on my Asus G74SX (too many problems, I want to start fresh.). I encounter an error 1029 with Asus's recovery disks that I made when I had windows working: it says it is recovering all the way to 100% then doesnt work. I am in the process of trying it again so I'll see if it actually managed to wipe my hard drive like it said it was doing, and maybe if it did actually work and reinstall windows. However, I'd like to be able to get into the recovery partition because I would prefer restoring it with Asus as they recommend me to. However, when I hit F9, their target to get there, it doesn't do anything and just reloads the boot screen, with the Asus logo on it. I don't have an actual Wndows recovery CD so that's not an option, and at this point since my hard drive has likely been wiped by these recovery DVDs, I don't think going into Ubuntu and fixing the MBR will do me much good anymore. It may be worth noting that before I last restarted, I marked the Windows partition as active because of a tutorial here, making it so that recovery partition isn't active anymore.
