External CD / DVD ROM Not Working In Windows 7 Environment?
Mar 20, 2011I own an MSI netbook with win7 op/sys and have recently purchased a Liteon external cd/dvd rom, but cannot get a dvd to play. Do i need specific drivers?

It shows in My Computer as a drive letter J but it doesn't show the usual capacity and free space. Disk management detects it though. Then opening the drive gives me the message that the drive needs to be reformatted before it can be used. I don't want to loose the 900GB files I have in it so I tried some recovery programs like Wondershare but it only recovered 10GB of my files.

When the desktop displays on the laptop it also comes up on the external monitor for just a second and then the monitor goes black. They have also tried connecting the monitor while the laptop was already up and running with the same results. The monitor had been working fine with their old Windows XP desktop system.

I then proceeded to install a PCI type network adapter card in one of the available slots and it was recognized by the OS with drivers installed. I connect the cable which I tested to be working fine on my laptop and it shows the led's working on the card but I still have no network capability. Is it possible to have both the onboard LAN and external NIC not work because of a chip issue, etc.? This is the first I have ever seen both not work. If I need a new board...fine...but I just don't want to waste my money if it can be fixed. BTW, I did check my BIOS and everything is enabled properly.

Jul 1, 2012I installed 2 hard drives using a caddy in my laptop, 1 SSD for the OS and 1 HDD for data. Every once in a while (once a year id say) I still need the DVD drive so I bought an external DVD enclosure (Generic). The problem right now is that windows doesn't recognize it or rather doesn't recognize it correctly.On windows 7 pro x64.here is a pic of the device manager so windows recognizes it a a disk drive automatically (changed it manually to optical drive) and adds a portable device (? WPD FileSystem Volume Driver). The drive appears in My computer but empty.
What Iv tried:
- chose manually all available drivers from windows in update driver.
- disabled power management on usb
- other usb port/computer (on Windows 7 32bits)
- using a power cable instead of the usb power cable
- google search for drivers using the device id ( USBSTORDISK&VEN_GENERIC&PROD_EXTERNAL&REV_1.12303030303030303030303030&0)
Working External Drive - Win7 Wants To Format It
Oct 29, 2009Today I upgraded my 64 bit Vista Ultimate to 32 bit Seven Ultimate (retail). I did it by using the DVD to boot up and do a custom install as it wouldn't do a standard upgrade cos of the 32 bit/64 bit clash.
Anyway, it worked smoothly up until I go to my external hard drive to look at some old photos. I plug it in and it gets recognised, but then I get told that it needs formatting before it can be used. No way am I doing that!
I check the hard drive on another machine running XP and the drive is fine.
Any idea what's going on?
Perhaps I should just format the C drive and do a completely clean re-install of Seven?
External Display NOT WORKING - Need To Reset Flicker Rate?
Jun 20, 2011I have a Dell Inspiron 1012 running Windows 7 Starter SP1 and I've got it hooked up to my Protron 42" LCD screen with HDMI cable. I changed the flicker rate to 70 Hertz without checking the Proton's maximum flicker rate - yeah, that's really SMART - so now I've got an issue with my external display.It worked okay for second but then my laptop screen turned black and the external display reads "Signal Out of Range" (duh, the Protron works only up to a 69.8 Hertz flicker rate, which I SHOULD have checked BEFORE changing it, but what's done is done -_-).Now, when I plug in the HDMI cable, my laptop screen goes to black and the external display still reads that same message. I can't change the flicker rate without seeing the menu on my laptop screen.
