Windows 7 Professional Changing Desktops Whenever?

Sep 22, 2012

This is one of the weirdest problems I have seen. When I boot the HP Pavillion g series it may go to my usual everything works Desktop but more likely it will go to a Desktop similar to when the laptop was new with added icons. If i open any of those they are like new program installs. I have rebooted at least 10 times until it finally goes to the desktop it should. When it boots to the useless one it displays the message"You have been logged in with a temporary file"You cannot access your files and the files created in this profile will be deleted when you log off.

I have scanned with 2 anti-virus programs and 2 mal-ware programs with 0 results. I tried restoring to a previous time with no luck. Tried ccleaner, wise disk cleaner, registry cleaner with no luck. Safe mode works fine. What is causing this thing to boot to a different desktop? It is driving me crazy having to reboot until it finally gets in the mood to work properly. I hope I have explained all of this properly.

Making Windows 7 Desktops Hibernate Like Laptops

Feb 8, 2012

Just got my new Windows 7 64-Bit Pro desktop last month, but I noticed that its hibernation feature doesn't function like my laptop!

tech support tells me that given my hardware (apparently, it's a motherboard issue), it's actually impossible to configure my desktop's hibernation to behave like it does on my laptop!

1. How can I get my desktop to hibernate like my laptop? That is, have it save my session to disk and shut off completely, resuming only when I power it on again (IOW, I do not want "hybrid sleep")??

2. Why did Microsoft think to do things this way?? Why take away such behavior for desktops -- it's obviously something programmed into Windows 7 already; why have hibernate disabled for desktops, replaced with hybrid sleep??

note that I am not interested in turning off my mouse and keyboard -- I do like using "sleep" when I'm on the computer all day! It's just that when I expect to not use my machine for another whole day I'd like to save my session but have the desktop off, drawing absolutely no power (and, more to the point, not have vibrations wake up the computer)...

Windows 7 Laptop Cannot Access Files Or Printers On Windows 7 Desktops

Dec 25, 2011

I have an HP Pavilion dm4t-2100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, the OS with which it was installed. I am connected to a Homegroup which also contains a laptop and two desktops.I am able to connect through the network to the other laptop and remotely view files and devices on that laptop. However, I cannot see past the names of the two desktops. This means I cannot read or write files on or install devices connected to either desktop computer. The desktops can see each other and both laptops (R/W).The laptops can see each other (R/W), but neither one can see either desktop ("Cannot find the network path"; ping command fails). Is there a setting I can change either on the laptops or on the desktops to enable connectivity? All computers on the network are running genuine copies of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit as their original OS.

User Customized Desktops That Don't Influence Each Other?

Sep 29, 2010

I have set up a windows 7 home premium box and I have put 2 users on it. The problem is that these users appear to be sharing a desktop in that if I delete an icon off one, it deletes it off the other. If I install a program for one, it installs it for the other without asking me. If I delete a start menu item for one, it deletes it for the other. I want the 2 users to be able to completely customize their desktop, icons, and start menu. Is this possible? On another of my Windows 7 home machines it would ask if I want to install it for just me or all users, but this new box never asks me. Is this a particular setting somewhere?

How To Control Desktops From One Master Computer & Screen

Nov 3, 2012

We have 8 machines that we need to control and image at our ghost station. The problem we have is the fact that our kvm switch has to be pressed every time we are configuring the next machine to join the multicast sessions of Norton Ghost. Is there any software that allows one master computer to have at least a 4-network desktop view of computers on a local network on one screen? For example, the program would be a big window that would house the other connected slave computers and display their desktop screen on the master computer within the window. It would do the same for the other three computers and you can navigate between them all by moving the mouse over it to gain it's focus and move to the next and gain its focus.

Font Size Changing Whenever Changing Settings In Personalization?

Jul 8, 2012

This all started whenever I wanted to change my text size different by changing my DPI settings. What I did was right click, go to screen resolution, and clicked on "Make text and other items larger or smaller". From this I changed it to 100% from 125%. I noticed it had changed my font size to the 100%. It then made everything SUPER small when I changed my theme settings.Whenever I right click and go into personalization settings, I do the usual customizing to my likings. Since I want to save the theme, I do so by naming it, blah. Now I want to use the blah theme by click on it, and I do so. Everything is fine and dandy until I right click my desktop to refresh(out of habit). This is the before and after of the font sizes.

Before
After

My workaround was to set a custom DPI setting, log off like it prompts me to, then changing it back to 100%, again prompting to do so. It is so annoying to do so.

How To Move From Windows XP Professional To Windows 7 Professional?

Feb 3, 2013

I have checked my DELL Latitude 6500 laptop running WinXP Pro using the Windows 7 upgrade advisor tool, and everythihng is a go. I also know that I need to do a good backup of my critical files and the pictures I want to keep.I have had many people tell me that before I make such a change in operating systems, do a backup first, because Windows 7 requires a clean startup, because there is no upgrade from XP to Win7.Is there an easy way to keep these work related files, and .jpg pictures using a simpler backup process than the software backup program called Acronis?I have also read that there is a program that will run at the same time as Windows 7, like a separate operating system called XP Mode. As I understand it, XP mode runs in a separate window on the Windows 7 desktop, much like a program, except it's a fully functional version of Windows XP. In Windows XP Mode, I think you can also access your computer's CD/DVD drive, install programs, save files, and perform other tasks as if you were using a computer running Windows XP.I am not sure Acronis can be installed on this DELL Out-of-Warranty Win XP laptop, if I am currently using it for my desktop with Win 7 Ultimate. Once the critical files and .jpg photos are saved on an external hard drive, can I bring them back onto the laptop on the same harddrive with the new operating system Win 7 files, or do I need to partition the laptop harddrive, or does it matter if I use them with Win XP Mode?

Windows 7 Professional Cannot Be Upgraded To Windows 7 Professional

Aug 28, 2011

I tried to do a Repair Install following this tutorial, but the Compatibility Report says:"Windows 7 Professional cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 Professional. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 7 Professional instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You'll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 7 Professional, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select "Custom (advanced)"." I have Win 7 SP1, but only a Win 7 disc without SP1.

Working With Multiple Monitors Does Not Allow Multiple Desktops

Sep 7, 2012

I have attached a second monitor to my laptop which runs Windows 7, however, I need to set different resolutions for different monitors, because the display does not fit to fill the screen on both monitors.

It is also noted that the display is replicated, and I would like to have the effect of having different desktops e.g. being able to use different applications such as debugging code on one monitor on an IDE such as Visual Studio, and, viewing the browser on the other monitor.

Currently it does not seem possible since the behavior seems to be that the same resolution is replicated on both monitors.

Dual Monitor Desktops In One Monitor?

Feb 3, 2011

I'm using a television (32p) as a second monitor in extended mode so that I can watch a movie in the TV and play a game in the monitor (this was my main goal). Monitor and TV lays in two different ambients, both connected to the same pc, one by normal VGA cable and the other by HDMI. I managed to differentiate the audio output so that VLC player sends it's audio to the HDMI (so that only the TV plays it) and the rest of system sounds, media players and games outputs to the speakers (basically only the VLC audio is directed to another output device). I reached my goal so that I can watch a movie fullscreen in the TV and play a game in the monitor fullscreen too without any interference from one another (nor audio or video).

The thing is, because I have the TV in another ambient I can't actually see what's going on in it, as I just "throw" the VLC window to the TV from my main monitor. And here's the question: There's a way to see the TV's desktop in my monitor? Without having to set it as main monitor so to not really switch between desktops.. The perfect thing would be if I could see the TV's desktop in a window like in remote desktops applications.

Upgrade This To Windows 7 Professional?

Oct 18, 2011

I have a self built PC running XP Pro SP3, and I'm planning to upgrade this to Windows 7 Professional, initially dual booting until I've sorted out all hardware & driver problems. The hardware is an ASUS M3A78-CM motherboard which I know supports 64 bits architecture, 2 x 1Mb DDR2 800 MHz DIMMS and an AMD Athlon II x2 250 Processor @ 3GHz AM3 CPU which, I understand, also has 64-bit instructions.

To the nitty-gritty, given that I can easily buy more RAM as required - there are still 2 free slots on the motherboard),should I go for 32-bit or jump to 64-bit. Will my existing software (including Office 2010, Acronis Disk Director and True Image, Steganos Suite etc) install and reap the benefit, or will I need further expense to upgrade all these. And how much RAM should I buy if I stick with 32 bit or if I jump to 64 bit.

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Installer

Sep 8, 2012

I built this computer Dec 11, and have had consistant installer issues from day one. Installing or removing programs hangs/takes forever or doesn't work at all. I don't get any error messages. It just hangs forever. Sometimes, if I go to bed on it, it will be complete in the morning. On the first Windows OS install, once I got the install probs, I just did another clean install. It didn't change a thing.Sometimes, thru the past, I've just ignored the errors, and simply tried to get along without some of the programs I've wanted to install. But now, Windows Updates aren't installing either, and the persistant messages and restart prompts are driving me crazy.Where in the heck do I start? I've run Microsoft's fixit for install errors.

Re-Installing Windows 7 Professional?

Sep 14, 2012

I have an HP G71 laptop, and I want to re-install Windows 7 on it. However, I have a few issues with simply re-installing on it.1.) The product key. Like many people, I have an official license sticker on my computer. The problem is the product key is completely faded and unreadable. But unfortunately, that's only the least of my problems. The key on my laptop is for Windows 7 Home Premium OEM, and I need at least Windows 7 Professional for work. The upgrade key I have for Windows 7 Professional has already been used, so it's not genuine to use again.2.) OEM software. I've never had to re-install Windows 7 on this laptop, so it's still loaded with the 'wonderful' OEM software that was pre-installed on it (some of it I can't even uninstall). My laptop does have a recovery manager on it, but if I were to do that, I would still have all the unwanted OEM garbage on it. That's why I would rather do a clean installation with a key that is not OEM, rather than use the recovery manager.I'm not exactly in any boat to go out and buy a new key, but unfortunately that is seeming to be my only option as of now. Is there any way I can obtain a key for Windows 7 Professional for free
