Why Is The Windows Firewall Blocking File Sharing

Jul 20, 2012

I used the standard trick of assigning permissions to the "Everyone" group to allow file sharing among all the Windows 7 and winXP computers on my home network. All was working fine until my son took his computer to school and they made him load their security software. When he came home for the summer, his computer could still see the network and file shares, but none of the other computers could see his shared files. This persisted even after I uninstalled the anti-virus software they made him install. I can fix the problem by disabling the windows firewall on his computer. That is probably safe here because of the firewall in my router, but I'm worried that might not be safe when he connects to other networks. Plus I can leave the windows firewall enabled on all my other computers, so I suspect there should be a better way around this problem. If I click "Diagnose" when my computer can't access my son's computer I get a message that says that windows can't find IPC$. So on my son's computer I opened a dos window and typed "net share ipc$" (a command I found from a google search about this problem). The response to this command was "System error 5 has occured; Access Denied".

3rd Party Firewall Blocking Network Connection And File Sharing

Mar 26, 2011

I've tried both Comodo and ZA firewalls. I prefer either over Windows 7 built-in firewall. The problem I have is after installing either of these I have control issues with Network Discovery and File Sharing. More exactly, even though the system shows these two items are off and/or disabled (manually), Start> Computer> Network will start showing available computers to connect to, whereas, Windows 7 firewall will inform me that both items are turned off. I use a public WiFi so this is obviously not a good thing. How to deal with this 3rd party firewall/File Sharing issue? Is the fact that the 3rd party firewalls are blocking any connection attempts a sign that everything is okay? Or should I just stay with Windows 7 firewall?

Turning Off Windows Firewall Turns On File Sharing & Network Discovery?

Sep 27, 2010

I am using kaspersky internet suite and disabled windows firewall. The problem is that turning the windows firewall off turns the pulic/home file/printer sharing and network discovery on.Turning on or off these settings starts the firewall.Disabling the firewall service permanently allows file sharing and network discovery for both public and home network, which cannot be turned off.I tried uninstalling kasperksky but nothing has changed.

Windows Firewall Blocking ICS

I'm currently sharing my internet connection with another computer (both run windows 7). The other computer can only access the internet if the computer holding the dial up connection has windows firewall turned off. I tried to add an exception in windows firewall for port 80 but did not have any effect. The local area connection adapter on the computer that's holding the internet connection has the following settings: [code] the other computer has obtain IP and DNS address automatically Using ADSL modem is a Sagem F@st 800 to connect to the internet no router used, just a simple cat-45 cable (i think that's the name of the cable!)

Windows 7 Firewall Blocking Internet.

Oct 19, 2009

I have a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on a new hard drive.

I have only installed 5 programs. CorelDraw, Adobe Creative Suite CS3, Jing (screen capture utility) Webroot Antivirus -Anti-Spyware for Windows 7 and WIDCOMM Bluetooth software for Win 7.

I installed Corel and Adobe...rebooted ...everything was fine.

I installed Webroot and WIDCOMM...rebooted...absolutely no internet connection.

I uninstall WIDCOMM then reboot. Still no internet.

I uninstall Webroot then reboot. Still no internet.

I reboot and then turn off Windows Firewall...reboot again. I have internet.

I turn Windows Firewall back on and reboot. No internet.

I turn Windows Firewall back off, reboot. I have internet.

So, I do a System Restore to the point before I installed the Webroot and WIDCOMM software and I have internet and it works fine.

Why would either of these software effect windows firewall in such a way as to disable internet access?

Is there some setting that I need to change / allow or something inside of Windows Firewall? I find it odd that with the firewall disabled I am able to get on the internet, but with it enabled, I can't at all.

If i disable firewall and kaspersky I can get an open port, but once I turn them on utorrent slows down indicating the port is not open. I have included utorrent as allowed in widows firewall but same problem. Has anyone had same prob or got some advice on what I should try?

I believe that I have setup up both PC for file sharing, but I am unable to see the other PC on either machine. On the PC with XP, I can see under 'M Network Places', the folder and file structure that would like to share.

Windows 7 File And Printer Sharing?

Jul 21, 2011

Okay I have two computers. They're both running win7 64bit home premium. The laptop seems fine and can file and printer share. So basically I'm trying to share my printer on my desktop pc connected through the usb as so I can print from my laptop. They seem to connect to each other and both are in the same homegroup. But I keep getting the can't connect to printer error. But it works if I do it the opposite way which is connect printer to laptop and network the printer through desktop. So it seems to be the settings or something on my desktop PC.The only folder I can access over the network on my desktop PC is the public folder. All the other folders say "access is denied". So there seems to be going on with my permissions, access, etc from my desktop PC. I already selected the folders I want to share and selected share with homegroup(read/write).

File-sharing From Windows To Linux?

Jan 6, 2012

i have a small web server running Fedora 15 and Apache, and I have a "pictures" folder on a windows machine that I have mounted from my /etc/fstab file, with "rw" access, however when I try to use a freeware PHP script in this particular folder, it doesn't display properly (won't show subfolders).I created a new folder directly on the linux machine, and the script works fine there.

Here's the setup:D:SharedPics - windows ntfs folder, shared as \winserverpics, and this share is mounted as /var/www/html/pics with RW access (although the username/pw I supply in .smbcreds file has "full" access.) PHP script does not work here. All linux permissions show rwxr-xr-x for files and folders, and owner is "root:root"I copied all of the files/subfolders from the "pics" folder into another folder, directly located at /var/www/html/pics1. file/folder permissions are exactly the same as the pics folder. PHP script works fine here.File and share permissions on the windows machine are set for read/write/modify for "Everyone", but it seems that the samba "service" is receiving different permissions. I've checked the smb.conf file and not been able to find anything that would cause "read only" permissions.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit And XP SP3 File Sharing

Mar 13, 2011

I have two laptops, that are at the same DOMAIN (not workgroup) at work. One runs Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and the other Windows XP professional 32 bit (with SP3). There, a domain controller takes care of all authentication issues and I have no problems sharing files from the one to the other and vice-versa. Question is, what happens at home/other place where there is no domain controller available? I have a wireless modem/router and I can, indeed, "see" one computer from the other (in the network folder of course).

But I cannot access the one from the other and I get an error message when I try to, with the usual "so-and-so is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command." (when trying to access the XP PC from the Windows 7 one). I take the last line to mean that there is no domain controller (which is correct).

Windows 7 Vs Vista Network File Sharing

Jul 3, 2009

I just bought a new laptop and decided to get windows 7 on it.

So far everything is great, i love how it looks and all works fine. Seting up wlan and all was no problem.

THE problem is... well with both old pcs (one pc one laptop) we had home network (or whatever network) set up so i could copy the files from sisters pc to my lappy and the other way around.

So now i have windows 7 on the new laptop.

And Vista on my old laptop (Vista 32 bit SP1)

And 0 idea what or where and how to do so i can share the files and get em from my old laptop on the new one... Flash is all fine and dandy but 100+Gb is a bit too much to be transfering with a 2Gb flash card <_< (old lappy does not have Bluetooth either btw...)

Are there any tutorials perhaps on how to get this done or at least ideas?

File Sharing Windows 7 Xp Laptops No Internet

Nov 15, 2011

Is it possible to connect 2 laptops - one windows 7 the other xp to just share files. I've done this with 2 xp laptops easily with a cat5 cable.

We are downloading pictures from a camera to one pc and need to then transfer to the other. There's no internet involved.

What would be the best way to do this? I can't get it to work with the cat 5; crossover seems to involve the internet, usb uses transfer software and isn't what I need. I just need to copy over images from a shared folder from one laptop to another.

Netgear DGN2200, Windows 7, Win XP, No Printer Access Or File Sharing?

Mar 10, 2012

I bought a NETGEAR DGN2200 modem/router to connect my 2 laptops, printer, USB HDD for file storage and sharing, and at this stage I'm not sure if I will connect my desktop PC as it is a much older machine with Windows 2000 Pro which I don't want to access the internet, although I am thinking that it would be better to have the printer connected via the desktop as this is logically a more permanent setup. Hard wired ADSL will be connected in about 2 weeks.I was having a bit of a play with the router to familiarise myself with it all and I managed to set it up so that my main laptop (Windows 7) has the option to connect by hardwire or wireless, my second laptop (winXP) conects through wireless. Both laptops successfully connected

I connected the printer to my second laptop (winXP) to see if I could have access to the printer from my main laptop (Windows 7). It could see the printer but not access it and kept trying to search for the diver. As I hadn't installed the drivers onto this laptop I thought that if I download the driver and install it, then it won't look for it through windows update via the router. For this to happen, I had to disconnect from the LAN and connect to the internet via my USB modem (the two won't work simultaneously). So I connected the printer to my main laptop and allowed it to find the driver online itself.

I then connected the printer back into the second laptop (winXP) and tried to access it from my main laptop and the same thing happened, it wanted to search windows update again. After failing to find anything through the windows update, it gives the option of browsing for the .inf file on the computer, and although I spent a while trying to locate where the file was I was unsuccessful.I also am unable to share files between the two laptops, although I have turned file and print sharing on with both laptops. I have seen options to set up workgroups (winXP) and homegroups (Windows 7), but the two are not compatible.

Windows 7 Sharing 'breaks' When Move A File To Shared Location

Jan 15, 2013

Why does Windows 7's networking/sharing have to be infinitely more complicated than XP was? I have a computer running Windows 7 Home x64 that I call "file server". My main day-to-day machine is a laptop running Windows 7 Pro x64. There are several other computers throughout the house all running WinXP Pro (32 bit). I do a lot of video processing on my laptop, and whenever a file is done processing and ready to live on the file server, I move it over there. As soon as I do this, sharing for the computer called "file server" DIES. All shares on the machine become inaccessible, and all other machines lose access. My workaround for the time being is to simply reboot the file server, which magically restores sharing. However, this is a horrible workaround since files of all types are being accessed from that machine all day long.

Network File Sharing With Windows 7 Home Premium - Guest Access Allowed

Dec 24, 2011

Is it possible with the non-Windows 7 machine's shares set to something besides "guest access allowed"? I've tried a few tweaks on my Windows 7 desktop and my Kubuntu 11.04 Linux-running laptop. Nothing has worked. Unless access to a shared directory is set to guest on the laptop, the Windows box keeps asking for a legitimate password, whenever I attempt to 'open' them.

Both machines have the same log-in strings for both basic log-on and Samba. Or do they? I'm presuming there's no separate logon/password required for Windows 7 Home Premium when it comes to file sharing, but as a late Windows XP Professional user (both SP2 and SP3), I'm not taking anything wholly for granted. Any Windows build since the dawn of XP that installs without gpedit.msc is bound to be lacking in other ways, imco.

It says I don't have permission. My userID on this computer is "Katie" and that computer also has a user account called "Katie." The folders in question DO have sharing set (by right clicking on them) so that "Katie" has read/write permission. Why don't have have write permission, then?
